How does one explain to his sister that he got married?

Buck could not leave it any longer. It was already nearing two weeks since he had been back and he still hadn't shared the news. But today was the day—it was time to reveal the big news.

He had decided to invite her out to breakfast, already set on going to the little coffee shop on the corner that he knew she liked the little Danish pastries from. Which was where it had now led him to waiting at a table, surrounded by pastries and two steaming cups of coffee perched precariously in the centre. Each time the bell dinged, he twisted around in his seat to see if it was finally his sister, with each passing second going by the ball of nerves in his stomach growing bigger and bigger.

'Ding'

He twisted around once more, but this time instead of turning back around to glare at the table, a large grin took over his face. "Maddie! You made it!"

He watched as Maddie wove her way around the few tables between the door whilst he stumbled, half falling out of his chair as he stood up, ready to engulf her in a famous Buckley hug once she was there.

"I wouldn't miss this for the world, Buck." She grinned, pushing herself forward for the hug. After a slightly longer hug than usual to make up for the time away, they both pulled away and took their respective seats, both still grinning.

"Buck! You shouldn't have gone to all this effort just for me," she said, as she surveyed the offerings on the table in front of her, eyes wide at all the options.

"It's no problem, really," he brushed it off as he could feel the tips of his ears turning red, "Anyway, how have you been?"

"I've been fine, Buck, nothing new. Just work and planning for the wedding. But we both know I didn't come here to talk about me! Come on, share with me everything, I want to know how Vegas was!"

This was it. This was the time for the reveal. Buck swallowed back his nerves.

"Just, before I tell you everything, I just want you to open this for me first. It would mean a lot to me." He passed over a card that had been hidden underneath some of the pastries up until now.

She looked at him curiously but asked no further questions as she opened it.

He watched with hidden delight as the emotions crossed over her face; first confusion, then shock, then the outrage with even more confusion.

"Evan Buckley! So help me God, you better explain what this is!" she half screeched, still trying to keep the noise down out of respect for the others in the shop.

Buck grinned, no point in hiding now the secret was nearly out. "It's exactly what it says, Mads."

Maddie all but growled at him. "Evan, this says 'Congratulations on your new nephew.' Explain. Now."

"I think it's kind of self explanatory, Mads. Not sure what else I need to explain." He kept up with the teasing, wanting to drag it out just a little bit longer.

"You have the next ten seconds to explain what this is before I call Eddie and get the truth out of him."

He laughed as he pulled out yet another card from underneath the masses of pastries. "Read this one and I promise, if you have any other questions I will answer all of them."

She glared at him, but dutifully took the envelope and opened it to reveal the card within. He watched as her jaw dropped open as she read the words.

"You absolute ass! Buck! Without me! And oh my god, you did it before me!" She shrieked.

He rubbed the back of his neck, knowing there was no point trying to hide his blushing now. "It wasn't really a planned thing, it just kinda… happened. But we're both really happy and I'm really happy."

"Oh, Evan. I'm so happy for you. You and Eddie both deserve each other so much."

He saw the tears starting to gather in his eyes as he swiftly moved from his seat and around to her side of the table so he could draw her into a hug.

"Mads, I am so happy with this, they are my life and I can tell you that the first card was specially chosen by Chris. He is so, so excited to have you as his official Aunt Maddie now."

Maddie chuckled softly before pulling away from Buck and picking up both the cards. "Well, I guess that Chris and I had better plan a fun day out. Aunt and nephew only, no dads allowed."

It was Buck's turn to sniff at that; he had been so excited when Chris welcomed him into his family with open arms and was even more excited with the recent news. "Yeah, I think he'd like that."

Both of them took a moment of silence, both sipping their coffee quietly, gathering their thoughts. Happy to just be in one another's presence.

"So, have you told the others yet?"

Buck snickered. "Only Bobby so far, I wanted to tell you first but we needed to sort out all the paperwork before any of the higher ups could question it. You'll have to ask him about how it was, I think he almost had a heart attack."

"Oh, don't you worry about that. I definitely will be asking. I'm just wondering how you're gonna break it to the others."

"Eh, I'll figure it out, just could keep it quiet for a little bit longer, as we'd like to tell them all properly and not second-hand."

Maddie took a long slow sip of her coffee as if contemplating her answer. "Sure, but I want to know how you're going to explain to Athena without her killing you."

Buck laughed out loud, startling a few people who were sitting close. "You just leave that with me, Mads. I have it all covered. But now, I seriously do want to hear what you've been up to whilst I've been gone."

"Okay, fine, we can talk about me for a bit but I will be getting all those details out of you at some point, Evan."

"Ohhh, real name, now I know it's serious. But yes. I promise the full details as soon as I let everyone else know. Now come on. Catch me up with all the gossip I've missed."

They stayed for the next few hours, slowly making headway through the masses of pastries and ordering another few coffees to help them. Maddie caught him up with all the latest gossip he had missed whilst he was away. Buck, in return, let her know a few details of what had happened and how happy he truly was with Eddie.

When it finally came to leaving, both hugged one another close, not quite wanting to be the first to let go. They finally managed to pull themselves away; Maddie grabbed her bag whilst Buck took all the rubbish to the bins.

"You text me and we'll sort out what me and Chris are doing, yeah?"

"Sure. And thank you for today, I'll explain everything soon, just got to tell the others first."

"It's really no problem, you just let me know how it goes with Athena and we'll call it even!"

They both laughed before parting ways at the door of the shop—both of them happier for the coffee and the company.
