Even though Athena had been on back to back calls most of the day with little to no rest in between each, when Buck called asking if she could spare a little time for her to meet with him, she jumped at the chance. She hadn't had a proper conversation since he had got back from his boy's trip to Vegas and she wanted to know every bit of gossip on what had happened and if anything had happened.
So after she had walked up the stairs and turned the corner to Buck's apartment, the last thing she expected to see was banners and balloons decorating his front door as if there had been some big occasion she had missed. She quirked an eyebrow at it all but nonetheless knocked on the door, awaiting Buck's inevitable ramblinging explanation.
She was met with Buck's oversized puppy grin that she was very much expecting to see and pulled into a big bear hug. "Athena! So good to see you! How have you been? Less trouble with me not around?"
"I've been good, obviously less trouble when you're not around but definitely less fun. Don't take that as an excuse to terrify me though!" She laughed. "Anyway, what's with all these decorations? Are we having a party or something?"
Buck simply laughed along with no real answer. "Or something, 'Thena, or something. Come in and we can chat. You want a coffee? Or juice?"
"I'll take a coffee if you're offering, still got another eight hours before I clock off and if it's anything as hectic as this morning then I'm gonna need it."
Grabbed at seat at his table whilst he went about pouring her a coffee, looking around she took note of everything that had changed since she had last visited一a lot. It appeared that he had the bare minimum laid out on the counters and next to nothing in the way of decorations left around the room. Come to think of it ,she was sure there was a lot more furniture last time and she was certain she had spied some boxes in the spare room she had walked past earlier. Now she just had to figure out what exactly was going on with all the decluttering in his life.
She waited until he had set the coffee down in front of her and taken his seat across the table. "So Buck, what's with all the packing? You moving somewhere I've yet to see?"
She watched with a smile as he openly laughed at her question, "Of course, I should've known better than to try and sneak anything past you, you're too good at all of this. I'm moving to a new place一a better place. Closer to work and a much better company."
She raised her eyebrow at him. "You want to explain the better company comment? Because if I knew any better, I would think you were moving in with somebody."
She went silent as she waited for his answer, she could already see he was about to explode with his news; he was bursting to tell her.
"I'm moving in with Eddie!"
"Oh, Buck! That's great! I take it you've shared how you both feel then and are happy about taking the next step! Is this why there's the bunting? We need to celebrate properly, we should all do a barbeque, get everyone together and have a proper party. Oh, I'm so proud of you, Buckaroo."
Buck had long since abandoned his seat in favour of returning to her side and engulfing her in yet another hug. "Thanks so much, 'Thena. It took us a long time to get here, but honestly we're both so happy. Going back to Eddie and Chris everynight feels like home."
"Oh honey. I am so happy you've found this happiness in your life." She pulled him close, making him crouch down from his tall height to meet her eyes. "I am so proud and happy for you, Evan. You deserve this."
"Thanks, Ma."
She pulled him close and both of them pretended the tears in their eyes did not exist right then一they just enjoyed the moment together.
Pulling away, Buck finally went to speak only to be interrupted as Athena's radio crackled into life. "Any available units, please respond to Century City, RTA involving multiple vehicles."
Athena signed. "Guess I better get going then. But I still want to know how all of this happened and what the holiday was like! Don't think that this means you get out of it."
"I promise I'll tell you absolutely everything. Text me when you're next free and we'll meet up for a proper chat."
"I'm gonna hold you to that, Buckley."
"Promise, 'Thena. Anyway, you can at least take your coffee with you even if we couldn't sit down and enjoy it."
She grabbed all her things and made sure she had her keys with her whilst Buck put her coffee in one of his many to-go cups that hadn't been packed yet.
"I'll text you and we'll sort out everything properly for the barbeque, shout as well if you need any help with the packing and we'll be around."
"Will do, 'Thena! You go kick some ass and save some lives now. Stay safe and I'll see you soon. I'll save all the gossip for you to hear when we meet up and tell you absolutely everything."
She grinned at him, walking over to the door that he was holding open for her. She responded quickly on her radio that she would be attending and would be en-route momentarily before taking the coffee off Buck's hands.
"Thanks, Buck. Total lifesaver with this coffee! I'll see you soon."
"No problem at all for you 'Thena. Anyway, just one thing before you go-"
Athena paused in the hallway, turning around to face Buck properly where he was standing between the balloons with the banners hanging around him.
"I got married."
"Evan Buckley! You did what now!" She glanced around down the hallway to where she knew her car was parked before back to Buck. "I swear, Evan. I cannot let you go anywhere. You're lucky I'm needed elsewhere, you better be free later on as I want to know everything!"
Buck was full on laughing with no care in the world. "My evening is totally free for you, 'Thena! Ring me when you finish and I'll be around with a bottle of wine to talk about it all."
"You better, Evan!"
She couldn't be angry at her boy, but oh my, could she be annoyed with the delay in telling her. She couldn't wait to finish this shift and grill him about everything.
