The quiet tune of I can't fight this feeling anymore played around them as they drifted around the dance floor in circles as the audience watched on. The jam jar lights hung up around them, creating a perfect ambiance in the darkness.
It was their official first dance and they were going to treasure every moment of it.
They'd had the song picked as soon as they'd seen it in the Rock of Ages movie. It was everything their own love story had, and they had jokingly danced around to it in the house long before they had shared the truth with anyone. It was perfect and neither of them were able to wipe the smiles off their faces when the opening tune had started.
They swayed to and fro as one.
The music behind them all but faded into the background as their eyes both locked onto one another's as if no one else in the room existed. It felt as if their hearts were beating in perfect unison as the music came to a close and Eddie, ever the perfect man, dipped Buck backwards for the picture-perfect pose, much to the applause of the audience.
Pulling Buck back up, Eddie smiled at him before they both heard the gleeful shout of Chris, "I want a dance with Buck now! It's my turn for a Dad dance!"
Buck laughed as Eddie made an outraged face and crouched down to face Chris. "What is this I hear? I'm being replaced! By Buck nevertheless!"
Buck let go of Eddie's hand, laughing, so Eddie could pick up Chris properly as he teased him.
"Come on, Eds. Give Chris over to me, he obviously knows who the better Dad is." Buck made grabby hands towards Eddie whilst Chris drowned out Eddie's remarks with his laughter.
Eddie finally gave in as he passed Chris over to Buck as the next song started up leaving him standing at the sidelines as he watched Buck spin around with him on the dancefloor with a small, contented smile on his face.
"You having a good time?" Bobby slid up beside him, holding out a beer for Eddie to take.
Eddie grabbed it gratefully and took a swig before answering. "Yeah, tonight has been perfect—more than perfect. Thank you so much for letting us use your house again."
"No worries, but really you don't need to thank me for that, all Athena's house really."
Speak of the devil and she will appear; Athena materialised beside Bobby. "What's this you saying about it not your house again?" she said to Bobby with a pointed look before moving onto Eddie as her face softened. "No problem, Eddie. You know that you and Buck are family. Now if you'll excuse us, I would like to get in a few more dances before the end of the night."
Eddie grinned at them as they drifted off to the dancefloor before he turned his attention back to Buck and Chris, who were still looking as if they were having the time of their lives doing the jitterbug to Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.
He left it a moment before gearing up to move in and intervene in case it put too much stress on Buck's leg when Maddie swooped in before him. He relaxed back again as he saw the quick discussion Buck had with Maddie before Maddie shot a smile at him and took Chris off to dance some more. Eddie made a mental note to thank her later.
Eddie watched as Buck, now free from dancing, sauntered his way back to him. And if Eddie took a more appreciative look at Buck's figure whilst Buck made a spectacle of himself, then that was nobody's business but theirs.
Eddie held out his half-full bottle to Buck, who smiled in thanks, before taking a long drink. Eddie couldn't help but appreciate Buck's strong neck as he tilted his head back to take a sip.
He was drawn out of his thoughts much too soon as the combined chaos of Chim and Hen greeted them.
"How are the happy couple?" Hen cooed.
"Doing just as well as the last month or so, thanks." Buck easily teased back.
Chim huffed. "Well, if you two hadn't been so rude as to keep it a secret then we would have all been happy."
Eddie openly laughed at Chim. "You're just sore because you missed collecting all the money in the pot from gambling on us. Not our fault you were so bad at guessing."
"You two just had to ruin my perfect plan! I did maths and everything for it!"
Hen nodded along at the side. "You two really messed up all the numbers. Hope you're sorry for that."
Buck put on his most commiserating face that was not at all fake.
Eddie did the same, but it looked a lot less authentic.
Their downfall was when they looked at one another and couldn't hold in the guffaws anymore.
"Yeah, yeah, you two. Laugh it all up. But anyway, that's not why we came over here. This is from all of us here. We all want you two, three, to be able to have a proper family getaway. So here."
With that, Chim withdrew an envelope from his inner pocket and passed it over to Eddie whilst Buck looked over Eddie's shoulder curiously.
Eddie opened it and Buck's mouth dropped open.
"You two—guys, this is too much, we can't possibly accept this—"
"You can." Hen cut Eddie off before he could continue. "This is all the money we all put into the gambling pot and, as no one won, we all felt like you should have it. It would only be fair and we all want you to go and have some fun."
Eddie remained in silence as thoughts ran through his head but Buck tried to say something again, "But—"
"No." This time, it was Chim interrupting. "You two deserve this and we won't take it back so better off just accepting it."
Buck and Eddie looked at one another, having a silent conversion with nothing but a glance. In one concise move, Eddie pocketed the money and both of them directed their glances back at Hen and Chim.
"Thank you, guys, seriously, this means so much to us."
They both smiled before Hen dragged Chim away, ignoring his protests.
"Eds, this is… so much."
"I know, Mi Amor. But let's just leave that for tomorrow. Today, let's just be here."
Buck nodded as he drew Eddie in against his chest.
Together, under the jam jar lamps with the song I Don't Want To Miss A Thing playing in the background and Chris' laughter ringing out above it all, they swayed in unison.
It was perfect.
