He was afraid. Not because he didn't want this, or wasn't ready- he had always wanted a child. But the idea of one actually being his had never really struck him until it was happening. First came the shock, as they weren't sure it would ever be possible. Then came the light-headed exhilaration. Lastly, and unfortunately the most dominant emotion, sickening fear. He tried to hide it as she was clearly ecstatic, but she knew him too well. She didn't pry directly, but kept a steady hold on his hand or one of her own rested on his shoulder as they told their friends.

Later, when they lay together to sleep, she asked gently,

"What's wrong?" He was forced to face his fear and swallowed loudly. She rolled to face him, raising a soft hand and touching the back of it to his cheek.

"What if-" He had to cut off to swallow again, steadying himself. "What if it's... like me?"

It came out an ashamed croak and he sighed, pressing a large hand to his eyes. Her eyes drooped with sadness as she stared at her tormented husband. But she smiled.

"I can think of nothing better." He stiffened, but her arms went around him and she laid her head on his chest. After a second, she continued, "A child who is kind to everyone, even those who don't deserve it. One that is gentle, understanding and full of love. One who sees beyond the outer shell to the beauty inside," She smiled again, stretching to place her lips to his cheek. He gave a shaky breath behind his hand. She gently pulled it from his face, making him look at her. She held his blue eyes and said seriously,

"I pray our child is like you." Tears welled up in his beautiful eyes and he shook his head.

"You know that's not what I meant."

"I know." She said with a smile, " I just chose to focus on what matters."

His arms were around her then and his face in her hair. She held him tightly and he reached to rest a hand on her stomach.

"What did I do to deserve this?" He whispered in awe and voice full of loving devotion. She smiled again, meeting her lips to his, kissing him lovingly.

"Everything."
