Chapter 1: Prep for Hell

Hello! Welcome to the Sequel! It's time for the Raccoon City Incident. Enjoy! I don't own anything. Resident Evil belongs to Capcom and Tomb Raider belongs to Core Design, Crystal Dynamics, and I think Square Enix. The only thing I own is the changes made to the stories of the Tomb Raider games/comics and Resident Evil games/comics/CG movies, the person that has taken over Kathrine Warren's life, and Rose Warren. This story also will be bloody, violent, and have cursing. It's rated T for Teen.

Kat closed up her journal as the plane landed. On the 24th the American embassy and the Japanese government had interviewed them. In addition, at one in the morning that very day they were all cleared to leave Japan. Kat called her dad and told him that she had be on the next flight back home. It took three different planes to get to Pennsylvania. The first flight was from Okinawa to London, then from London to New York, and then New York to Pennsylvania. She looked at her hand. The doctors and nurses back in Japan told her that she might have scars on her stomach and temple, and have definite scars on her shin, calf, thigh, ankle, and hand. The white bandage on her hand just made her smile a little.

As dark as it sounded, she liked that she had permanent scars. If she got back to the dating scene, she might get many appreciative looks. Guys liked girls that looked like they told a story all without speaking. Not only that, but it made her smile and wonder what Iron's reaction would be. To know that the woman he had been obsessed with, who had been ruined once by having a baby was now ruined with some nasty looking scars. That dark joy faded quickly. She lowered her hand as the people that had a priority flight next got up and off. Her scars might scare Rose or worry her father more. She shook her head and got up from her seat. As she buckled in, she got out the book that she picked up in the Airports Duty Free shop. It caught her eye, One Shot One Kill by Charles W. Sasswe and Craig Roberts. It was about snippers in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and Beirut. She planned to make a trip to Kendo's gun shop and talk to him about a long-range rifle. She wanted to be able to hit the creatures she would be seeing in Raccoon from a distance. Not so, close up if she could help it. She would have Rose and Sherry to protect.

She didn't need to worry about it. Rose would just compare her to the heroes they read about in stories. Her father couldn't really get more worried, unless he decided she isn't allowed to leave the house. But hey, she was a grown ass adult. If she had to, she would move into an apartment with her daughter and get a job at the museum there until the 23rd. She got off the plane and headed for baggage claim. Once there she grabbed the two bags that she was provided with for her rifle, crossbow, and bow she was allowed to keep from Yamatai. She was not allowed to keep the ammo or the pry axe. But because her knife and handgun were hers legally, she could keep them on her belt. She was lucky she had a carry permit in the 90s because she'd have problems with having the revolver on the plane. As long as it was out of site and not open carry. The jacket she got covered it even if she raised up her arms. The knife she had in her carry-on. She did not want to scare anyone if they saw either of them on her belt.

She slung the bags over her shoulders and headed for the exit, looking down the escalator for her daughter and dad. Then she saw them. Mayor Warren in a brown suit with a black cotton jacket and an American flag pin on the lapel, graying blond hair combed and his face was set in a grim smile. The kind of smile that one has when they are putting on a front. And little Rose with her brown hair in pig tails, in a pink dress with a purple sweater. In her small hands, as she jumped up and down, was a big sign on blue construction paper with puffy green words covered in purple and red glitter. The words read 'WELCOME HOME, MOMMY!'. Kat beamed and waved at them. Just as she was at the bottom Rose was pulling her mom into a hug. Kat hugged her right back, squishing the welcome sign between them and getting them, both covered with glitter that might be around for days. But Kat didn't care as she felt tears start to well.

She was home. Her daughter was her home, heart, and here she was, warm and smelling of her kid shampoo. She didn't realize how much she missed the smell. Her sweet little Rose was in her arms again.

"…and then we were plucked from the PT boat." Kat finished explaining a heavily edited version of what happened.

Dr James hummed lightly as he looked to his notes. Kat felt uncomfortable here. His office said he tried to make people comfortable in there, but Kat knew she could not relax. It just seemed so artificial. He looked up to her and seemed to be trying to get in her head.

"So, you killed many people on that island, Kathrine. How did it feel the first time you took a life?" He asked her, jumping to that part.

Kat swallowed. 'That…I can deal with that.' She thought. "Not good. It is not supposed to. I wanted to drop my knife and just die."

"But you couldn't." He stated.

She shook her head. "No. I couldn't. I had to survive. What was left of the crew needed help. And I had to live for my daughter."

"And after that first kill, how did the other kills feel after that?" He asked. He was trying to see how mentally damaged Kathrine was.

"I sort of blocked it out, I think. I felt sad? They didn't have to die. But there was no reasoning with them. I know more than once I was sick and threw up. I'm probably still blocking a lot of it out to be honest." She told him. "I know it'll hit me at some point. I just don't know when it will."

"Who was the last person you killed?" He asked. "Do you remember them?"

Kat shook her head. "I was at a distance. I was covering Lara so she could get Sam away from the cult leader. I…I lost count of how many took a bullet to the head."

"So, you didn't kill the cult leader? This Mathias man?" He asked looking to his notes.

"No. That was Lara." Kat told as she looked to her hands in her lap.

He nodded. So far, he could not see any desire or joy when Kat talked about her time on the island. Moreover, he got no red flags when she talked about killing. "You mentioned monsters. Is that how you saw the men on this island?"

Kat closed her hands into fists, feeling a light sting on her newly pink scared hand. "Yes. They lost their humanity long before we got there. A part of me believes that maybe some could be rehabilitated, like other cult survivors, but…when you're in the moment of life and death, when they are shooting at you or have you by the throat. That thought kinda leaves your head. All I was thinking was I need to live to see my baby again." She could feel the tears welling up. "I had to come home to her. I couldn't leave her alone here." She knew she said it a little too fiercely, but she knew, if Rose was alone here, she would die or worse.

The archaeology research ship, The Endurance, has dropped off the map and lost all contact with the outside world.

This ship left the Japanese port on July 24 in search for the legendary lost Island of Yamatai, home of the mythical Sun Queen Himiko.

The notable crew aboard consists of the Renowned TV archaeologist Dr. James Whitmen, Retired Royal marine and captain of the ship Captain Conrad Roth, Documentary Filmmaker and Translator Samantha Nishimura, archaeologist Lady Lara Craft, And Raccoon's very own mythologist and daughter of the mayor Kathrine Warren.

All contact was lost on August 16, and rescue efforts have started.

Mayor Warren has not made comment on the situation and has kept his granddaughter from reporters.

RACCOON TIMES AUGUST 19, 1998

MISSING RESCUERS? DAY FOUR OF MISSING SHIP!

As reported before, the research vessel the Endurance went missing in the Philippine Sea on a voyage to find the lost Island of Yamatai. Since the 17th, three rescuers have been sent.

The first one reported to Reeve an SOS from the Endurance before it went missing and received word from crewmember, Lara Craft that they were alive and that the ship had wracked in a storm within the Dragon's Triangle. Then that plane flew out there and has since joined the missing.

Umbrella sent one of their own helicopters to try to find the two missing crews only for it to also go missing.

Finely a second helicopter voluntary was sent and has since dropped off the face of the earth. What does this mean? Where are these aircrafts and ships going?

DAILY RACCOON AUGUST 26, 1998

MAYOR'S DAUGHTER RETURNS!

Late in the evening on August 25, Kathrine Warren, daughter of Mayor Warren returned from Japan. Her daughter Rose Warren (7) and her father Mayor Warren met her at Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport. From what our source said, it was a tearful reunion with a bandaged Kathrine and a glitter covered Rose.

For the moment, we have not gotten an interview with Kathrine. What happened on that Island? Why were so many dead? Will the Mayor's daughter have trauma after these events?

Kat sighed looking over the newspapers her father let her look at that had come out in the time she was missing. She did not plan to give an interview. She did not want to and didn't feel the need to. It was not the reporter's business or the people of Raccoon's business to know what happened to her on the Island.

She put the papers down and closed her eyes a moment. Dr. James had cleared her for mental health. He did say she should try to meet with him once a week for check-ups. Kat guessed he suspected she had not told him everything. She couldn't tell anyone what really happened except her daughter. If her daughter talks about the magic and evil spirit of Himiko, they will believe Kat told her daughter a story she could understand and would tell her the truth of it when she was older.

She thought back on the men she had killed. She felt almost numb. She didn't regret killing them, what she regretted was that towards the middle, she started to enjoy it. There was a level of excitement in the fighting. Nothing like 'This is fun!'. It was like being out on a dark night and you hear something behind you, scares you to death, your heart is racing, and you are screaming in fear, but you also feel alive and glad that you made it your house and lock the door. It was at the end that she just felt numb to it. It was just a job to be done. Nevertheless, she smiled when Lara killed Mathias, and she was overjoyed to have killed Himiko. She shook as she opened her eyes. She noticed that for a few minutes her phone was ringing. She grabbed it up and put it to her ear.

"Hello?" She asked with a slit crack to her voice.

"Hey, Kat, how are you doing?" Jill asked sounding concerned.

Kat smiled and cleared her throat. "Yeah, my throats a bit dry."

"How was therapy?" Jill asked.

"It was okay…" Kat bit her lip. "Jill…I need to tell you something. And I need you to listen until the end…"

"Sure. What is it?" Jill asked worriedly.

Kat then went on to explain what she knew, what really happened on the island, and about Chris. Jill to her credit kept quiet and listened to Kat's words. When she learned of what really happened on Yamatai and not the simple version Kat had told her on the Sat phone when rescued, she felt ill. She had met Sam and Lara when the three came back to Raccoon for a spring break visit. To hear of the horrible things that happened, the magic that was real, it hurt to know that Kat was only one of five that survived it all. It eerily reminded her of when she was one of only four to survive the mission in the Arklay forest. When she learned of Kat's foreknowledge of the events and what they were before she changed them, and that she knew what really happened in the Arklay forest, Jill was beyond shocked.

"…What I know…it goes all the way up to the year 2022." Kat confessed at the end.

"So…you know everything? And…if Umbrella was really on that island…" Jill began, as she mentally sorted through the information. "How much do you have?"

"I'm still making the files and getting the evidence together. It's hard to sneak around with dad breathing down my neck." Kat told her as she put the papers down.

"So, what are you planning? If you know so far ahead?" Jill asked worriedly.

Kat bit her lip as she stood and closed her door. "Jill, the up and coming few weeks are going to consist of me prepping for the 23rd of September."

Jill paused. "Kathrine, is there something you need to tell me?"

Kat bit her lips together as she sat on her bed. "Yes. Jill…on the 23rd, T leaks into the water supply of the city."

"What!?" Jill yelped. "Please tell me you're joking!"

"I can't lie, Jill." Kat told her. "The city by the 24th will bit completely infected. Only a small amount of people will be alive and not turned." She looked at the backpack on the side of her bed and thought of the gun case that she kept hidden in the back of her closet. "Then Umbrella takes the opportunity to send in their B.O.W.s for taking out any survivors from their black-market deals…or some sick bullshit like that."

"The hell…" Jill hissed angered that the people of Raccoon were going to go through what she had on a larger scale.

"That's…that's not all." Kat said as she closed her eyes. "Umbrella also sends a near indestructible Tyrant after any S.T.A.R.S. left in the city. After you and Brad."

"What?" Jill asked almost whispering.

"It's called the Nemesis. It is relentless. It has one goal, find and kill all S.T.A.R.S. and if it has to kill people in its way, it will. You can take it down, but it comes back stronger and stronger." Kat explained. "The only way it was killed in all versions I remember of the timeline, is with an Umbrella made rail gun."

Jill felt hopeless for a moment. Then gritted her teeth. "Get out." She said. "Kat, you have to get your daughter and get out of Raccoon. Right now."

Kat closed her eyes and shook her head. "I can't, Jill. I want to. Believe me I do. Many factors keep me here. The biggest one right now is my father. He's made it very clear if I try to leave the city, he'll have everyone looking for me or have me arrested. And then write of me trying to leave with my daughter as proof that I can't take care of her and she'd be taken to the orphanage and…" Kat felt her hand grip her phone. "I know what happens if she goes there, Jill. I can't let that happen."

Jill's eyes narrowed. "What are the other factors? Let's strategize." If she could not get Kat out of the city right now, then she would help her.

"Sherry is one of them. She and my daughter have become like sisters. I couldn't leave her." Kat began. "Claire is another. She comes to the city on the 29th looking for Chris." She took a breath. "And I need every bit of evidence I can get on Irons. His corruption, his kills, his harassment, and everything he plans on doing to me."

"What is it that Irons plans to do to you?" Jill asked worriedly.

"You've seen his office…his…trophies. That. He wants to do that to me." She took a breath. "But first he wants to hunt me. Play with me like a cat with a mouse. That is why my main plan until the 29th is to avoid the RPD. Then meet up with Claire and a Rookie cop. Stick with them since me, Rose, and Sherry would get out of the city that night on a train from an Umbrella Lab called NEST."

"Sounds like you planed this out fairly well. It would be a good idea to stay clear of me or Brad anyway if this Nemesis you mentioned will zero in on us. Did I have any allies in the timelines?" Jill asked, trying not to imagine Kat as a stuffed figure in Irons' office.

"A man in U.B.C.S., Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service, named Carlos Oliveira. He has good intentions but is naive to what Umbrella is doing. Until he meets you, that is. But if there is one person in U.B.C.S. that you should not trust at all with anything he says or does, it's Nicholai." Kat informed her.

"Do you know what to do with zombies?" Jill asked unsure.

"Aim for the head or move quickly out of their way." She told her. "Same with Zom animals. But mostly avoid them."

"It's good to know you've planned this." Jill said then paused as a beeping sounded. "Crap, I have to go, Kat."

Kat nodded. "Good luck, Jill. We'll keep in contact as much as we can."

"Bye." Jill said and hung up.

Kat put her phone down and wondered what the beeping was. Maybe it was to let Jill know how long before Umbrella would start listening in on the conversation. Maybe it was something to let Jill know to get something to eat. On the other hand, maybe it was so she could check in on someone she was tracking or tailing. Either way, Kat understood talking with Jill would have to be limited.

Her door opened with a knock and a small head peaked in. "Mommy? Was that Aunt Jill?"

Kat smiled. "Yeah, she's very busy and couldn't talk long." She waved Rose over.

Rose came over and saw the articles. "Grandpa said that Jill and the other S.T.A.R.S. are crazy." She said as she pulled herself onto Kat's lap.

"What do you believe?" Kat asked her, feeling a bit of anger at her father for telling Rose that.

"Aunt Jill just seems sad. And Uncle Chris was fine last I saw. Maybe a bit angry, but he was still nice." Rose smiled. "I think Grandpa is confused with his anger and Jill's sadness."

Kat smiled at her daughter's innocence. "I'm glad you don't believe that S.T.A.R.S. is crazy. They are not. They went through something horrible, and it's effected them all differently."

Rose hugged her mom tightly. "Like you with Yamatai?"

Kat nodded. "Yes. Just like me."

"Mommy? Are you sad because of Yamatai?" Rose asked looking up. "Is there anything that happened that didn't make you sad?"

Kat smiled sadly, as she ran her fingers over her daughter's head and through her hair. "Yeah. Everything that happened there, it was sad. But there were a few good moments. Like ripping, rusty doors open with a pry axe." She made her voice rough and low like she was the metal screeching. "Made me feel powerful." She flexed her arm like a body builder. "Or all the old structures Lara and I found. They were amazing." She made wide eyes and let the wonder show on her face.

"Did you pick up any stories?" Rose asked as she giggled at her mom's voice and antics.

Kat smiled and settled onto her bed more and told Rose Hoshi's story, but told it in a way that came off as a fairy tale in case her father came home early and heard them. By the time she came to Hoshi's sacrifice, she found that Rose had fallen asleep. Carefully Kat stood and walked down the hall to Rose's bedroom and tucked her in. Sure, she would wake her up in an hour or two to make her dinner, but if Rose fell asleep, she was not going to stop her. Not when it was the summer. Not when she knew neither of them in a few weeks would not be getting much sleep. She closed her door, walked back into her room, and paused thinking about Hoshi.

"Star…" The tattoo artist asked, holding the paper that held the corresponding Kanji.

Kat nodded as she sat in the waiting area of the tattoo shop. Her dad was going to hate her for doing this, but she wanted this. She wanted a reminder of the good things that happened on Yamatai, not the bad ones that her scars would make her relive. "Stars give hope and wishes. It was hope that got me through what I went through." She rubbed her locket. "I'll get a tattoo for my daughter later. This one will be for mental reasons."

"There's a good reason to get a tattoo. And you've clearly thought about it." He nodded and looked up at the young women. "Where would you like it?"

"On my thigh in the center. On top. So, I can hide it easily for job interviews in the future." She said.

"And where would you like the one for your daughter? I can get a sketch going for you for a future appointment." He offered.

"I'm not sure what I want for it yet. So, I'm not sure where to have it placed." Kat admitted.

"Let me give you my card then." He told her as he stood. "I'll go get a trace of this and take you back."

As small as the little store was, Kat was still able to look for what she needed. She stood looking at the different brands of water in the refrigerated section. She then spotted it. A red label with a White Mountain behind the white words 'Arrowhead'. She pulled the door open and took five of the bottles and put them in her basket. She recognized the brand from her old life. Arrowhead water came from Washington State. Since that was on the other side of the country, no way would it get infected with T-virus.

She left the refrigerated section and headed for the isle that had protein bars, candy, and stuff like that. Looking around she grabbed up a box of Peanut butter flavored PowerBar's and a box of shark bites fruit snacks. She grabbed a few other things to make it look like she was shopping like a normal person and not a doom's day prepper. She got some cereal, milk and a few cans of soup. She would get more PowerBar's, if runners ate them to keep up their energy before a race, then it will be good for them when that is all they can eat. She got the Chocolate Peanut Butter ones. Figuring everyone would like that.

She hissed as she felt her new tattoo twinge from her skin stretching. 'Crap…I know how Sam felt now…but she had it worse than me…'

Kat opened up the two backpacks she had on the floor. They were not too big. Just school sized backpacks. She was able to fit two water bottles in each and plenty of the fruit snacks and bars. But she knew she could get more of everything and put them in an item box for later use. She picked up her list of what else she and her daughter would need. Doubling the food and water amount for Sherry, Claire, and Leon when they were all together. Can she put a full backpack into an item box? She did not think so. However, she wanted to get lots of first aid spray, food, and water in there at least. She thought for a moment. What if she stashed bags around the city? In the places she knew would be safe. She would ponder that.

She sighed rubbing her nose and putting her slowly building file on Irons into her dark green backpack and then closed it. She put a Taser and knife into her daughter's purple backpack and closed it too. Then put the two packs under her bed. She had 27 days before it was released. She had 27 days to get everything ready for her, Rose, and Sherry's escape. 27 days. She could do it. She had to.
