Chapter I:
:Welcome to Republic City:
Within the heavily guarded White Lotus compound in the South Pole inside a healers hut, Katara uses her skills as a healer to give aid to the sick and injured. Her patient was a young sixteen year old girl that Korra had found lying in the snow. Despite caution from the White Lotus leaders the elder water bender decided to help her.
Kamala lies in a pool of water still in her costume, but her mask was removed to help diagnose her. Katara moves her arms back and fourth motioning the water in the pool. The water glowed white as it started to heal the meanwhile was receiving a scolding from the White Lotus members present.
"You brought an outsider here Korra do you realise what a risk this could be?!" The leader said.
"Hey she was lying unconscious in the snow what was I supposed to do?!" Korra protested for being scolded for her good deed. "I couldn't just leave her there!"
"You don't even know what this girl was doing out there? Or where she's even from?" Said the woman elder.
"So what I just leave her out in the cold!" Korra argued.
"Everyone please." Katara called. "Right now we should be concerned about this young lady well-being." She continued to tender the girls injuries.
Everyone realised that veteran was right they would discuss this matter later right now the strangers health was important. They gathered as Katara healed the stranger.
"Is she going to be okay?" Korra asked.
"I can guide her healing process but she'll have to get better on her own." Katara explained.
"Where does she come from?" The White Lotus leader asked.
"Judging from her garb she looks Northern Water Tribe, but the red and the lightning bolt on her chest shows she could be Fire Nation?" One elder said looking at her clothing.
As they discussed Ms Marvels face cringed almost as if she was having a bad dream.
In her subconscious she was seeing herself in the A.I.M lab where she and her fellow Avengers were.M.O.D.O.K's portal machine was overloading after Iron Man and Thor destroyed the Norn Stones.
"YOU FOOLS YOUR OVERLOADING THE SYSTEM!" M.O.D.O.K cried then accessed the computer with his mind. "THE DESTINATION CODE HAS BEEN DELETED THAT PORTAL COULD SEND US ANYWHERE!"
"We need to retreat now!" Cap exclaimed.
The last thing she saw was her heroes being engulfed in a blast front of light. She saw the Hulk grab her the toss her away before he was engulfed in the light as well. Ms Marvel looked around and found herself engulfed in the light as well. Falling through some kind of time space tunnel. The flash faded.
Suddenly her eyes shot open gasping for air. The White Lotus, Katara and Korra were taken completely by surprise. Ms Marvel splashed around the water getting up in a panic. She looked around and saw she was in what looked like a wooden hut with a pool of water. Looking around her she saw people dressed in blue and white and two others dressed in blue and white furred clothing.
The White Lotus took up bending stances but Korra stood in the way. "Wait no!" she cried then turning to the stranger.
"Hey its okay we're not your enemies!" Korra tried.
"Where am I some kind of A.I.M camp!?" She demanded she then felt her face and realised that her mask was missing. Her full face was exposed. "Oh no no!"
"Calm down, you're safe here we mean you no harm, you were found out in the snow we brought you here to heal you." Katara tried.
"How should I believe that! Where have you taken me where are my friends The Avengers!" Kamala demanded.
"Whoa whoa calm down we don't know what…" Korra was interrupted when the White Lotus guards arrived in the room.
Kamala panicked as they got closer to her. They were ready to restrain her. She screamed as she thrusted her hand forwards and it enlarged and pushed them back into the wall. Korra was completely startled she'd never seen that kind of bending before.
Kamala looked with wide eyes she looked at their faces and they had the look of fear and surprise. She shook in fear she realised what she had done. She had to escape. She quickly ran out of the room pushing down the door.
Korra hurried to help the White Lotus guards to their feet and the leaders were reeling from that sudden attack.
"We cannot let her escape she could be dangerous!" Said one elder.
Korra however thought differently. "No she's confused, she didn't look hostile."
"Korra is correct." Katara said getting up on her feet. "She was clearly afraid and in shock."
"But Master Katara how do you explain what we just saw!?" One White Lotus Elder said.
"Never mind that we need to stop her!" The White Lotus leader exclaimed.
"No!" Katara said getting their attention. "We must let her get outside." She noticed.
Meanwhile Ms Marvel had smashed down the doors to the hut and leaped down from the wooden step and rolled down into the snowy ground below. She ran and ran. However she looked around and saw she was in what looked like a compound. What got her attention the most was where she was it looked like the South Pole. It didn't look like an A.I.M base at all. She was startled she was in Siberia now here what happened.
She breathed in shock. Just then the snow rising around her suddenly made her back away in shock.
"Hey." Said a voice she turned round and saw Korra standing behind her. "I'm not here to hurt you, your scared just let me help you."
The Inhuman hero was a little weary but she then saw something she didn't expect with a wave of her hand, Korra lowered the snow around her. Before she could say anything Kamala felt a little weak she was so pumped with adrenaline from her panicked escape she burned through her energy. She collapsed to the ground but luckily Korra was on hand to catch her in her arms.
Soon the White Lotus arrived to see that Korra had already taken care of the situation. Katara could see that her student had helped to calm the stranger down. She didn't know why but she could sense something special about this stranger.
Many Hours later:
Soon Kamala was lying in a bed in the main building of the compound she was resting. She groaned a little as she woke up. She looked to see she was in a warm bed and she even looked to see her costume was lying on a chair next to her. She slowly sat up and saw she was wearing what looked like robed garments in blue and white.
"Hey." Kamala looked and saw the woman she saw earlier at her bedside. "How are you feeling?" Korra asked.
Kamala was a little hesitant to answer but she could see that this girl was a little older than her and looked like someone she could talk to.
"Uh..I..I'm fine just dizzy." Kamala answered rubbing the side of her head.
"Yeah, listen about what happened earlier. Sorry about that the White Lotus are a little cautious a little too much." Korra assured.
"Oh, well if anyone should be apologising its me I should not have…" Then Kamala realised something. "Wait where exactly am I how did I get here?"
"Ah right well I brought you to this compound when I found you lying in the snow." Korra explained. "The White Lotus Elders were a little ticked about me brining in a stranger and wanted to lock you up for questioning. If it wasn't for Katara you wouldn't be here resting. Again sorry."
Kamala realised that this must be where this girl lives and she must be someone important to be guarded. But what was with her ability with the snow. She could see these White Lotus people were a little paranoid, but if this woman didn't bring her here she probably would have frozen to death. She realised this wasn't a very high tech place so she guessed she was in some kind of alternate dimension or timeline perhaps.
"Oh its okay, I'm just glad everyones okay, and I guess I owe you one if you hadn't brought me here I would've been an icecicle and between you and me I'd rather be a prisoner than an ice cube." Kamala then joked.
This brought a small laugh to Korra, with a smile. Kamala couldn't help but smile too. "Oh I'm sorry I didn't get your name." Korra realised. "I'm Korra, whats your name?"
"Uh Kamala, Kamala Khan." Kamala answered with a smile as the two shook hands.
Before anymore could be said the door knocked. "Come in." Korra called.
The door opened to reveal it was Katara on the other side. "Korra the White Lotus wants to talk to you." She said.
Korra just gave an unsurpassed look. "Ah now what did I do?" She muttered then turned to Kamala. "I better go see whats up I'll see you later Kamala."
"Okay." Kamala thanked as Korra stood from her seat and headed out. "Oh Korra." She turned to see the young stranger. "Thanks."
Korra gave a comforting smile as she headed out of the room leaving Kamala alone. She hoped that her saviour wouldn't get into too much trouble. But at the same time she wondered what she was to do now if she was in a parallel universe.
Meanwhile:
Korra was now in the eating room discussing the matter of their new guest. However as they discussed the Avatar in training wasn't pleased with their proposed idea.
"Send her away?!" Korra said in surprise.
"Korra she's an outsider with an unknown bending style we haven't seen before, her clothing suggests she could be from the Northern tribe." The White Lotus leader suggested.
"We don't know where she's from and she didn't look like she was from the Northern Tribes?" Korra tried. "Besides we wouldn't know where to send her back too, she got here after some strange light I saw before I found her."
"Korra…" The White Lotus tried but then.
"I agree with the Avatar." Said Katara much to the surprise of everyone. "There is something unknown about this young girl, I could sense it as I healed her. Her aura seemed strange almost foreign. Her bending is not like anything from either tribes. Perhaps it is best she stay."
"I am unsure about this Master Katara." The White Lotus leader said still not sure about this stranger.
Korra then had an idea that might help. "Wait, let me watch over her I could help her fit in. I mean I brought her here."
The White Lotus Elders were still weary of this idea, let alone where this unknown stranger came from. But at the same time they couldn't very well let her wander around without understanding the situation.
"Perhaps it is best we let Korra guide the young lady, who knows maybe they can learn from each other." Katara then agreed.
After much debate between the White Lotus elders, they eventually came to a decision. "Very well Korra. As you've brought her here that makes the girl your responsibility."
Korra was both relieved and happy all at once. "Yes!" She cheered before calming down and clasping her hands together bowing. "Uh I mean thank you I won't let you down."
Later:
Korra later returned to the room that Kamala was settled into and told her the news. To say the young Avenger was relieved was an understatement. They were soon outside exploring the compound. The young Avatar provided Kamala with a spare set of clothes given how her costume was the only attire she had.
Kamala now sported a light blue tight sleeveless shirt similar to Korra with darker blue shoulders. She had a brown and white furred skirt tied round her waist wearing dark blue baggy pants with brown and white furred boots. She had an arm length band with similar water tribe patterns to the band Korra wore on her arm. She still sported her gold bracelet and her red and yellow scarf.
"Thanks for the spare clothes but burr it's freezing here and this is where you live?" Kamala said still feeling a little cold.
"Hey when you live here for a few years you get used to it." Korra said.
All of a sudden they heard the thumping sounds of foot steps heading towards them. Out of nowhere was Naga who came strolling over and knocked Kamala to the ground who was taken completely by surprise.
"Naga!" Korra exclaimed. However the Polar Bear dog wasn't attacking Kamala she was greeting her with some affectionate licks to her face.
"Ah! Who's a good girl." Kamala said in surprise she was surprised by this enormous dog but then again it wouldn't be the first time. "And whats your name you big slobbery mush mush face?" She asked cupping the Polar bear dogs cheeks.
Korra let out a small laugh before she pulled her polar bear dog off Kamala. "Her names Naga, she's my Polar Bear dog." She explained as Kamala stroked her head.
"Wow a cross between a polar bear and a dog wow! Doreen would freak if she saw this!" Kamala said a little excited.
"I'm guessing it's the first time you've seen one huh?" Korra guessed. "Or even the first time here in the south pole?"
Kamala was taken aback and did flinch a little with nervousness. "H..how'd you know?" She asked.
"Well I'm told I think with my fists instead of my head but I can think without hitting things." Korra explained. "Plus I've never seen anyone from the Northern of Southern tribes with a lighting bolt on their chests or able to well stretch."
"Oh uh yeah…" Kamala said realising she had to tell her eventually. "Okay listen uh don't freak out or anything but well uh your gonna find what I have to say pretty hard to believe."
"After what I saw nothing could surprise me." Korra explained with a mutual look.
With that the young Avenger took a deep breath before she explained. "You see I'm…. I'm actually from a different universe." She said quickly and braced herself for the freaking out.
Korra was a little wide eyed by that statement. "Wait wait a different world? But that doesn't make sense theres only two worlds the physical and the Spirit world?"
"Well o…kay how do I explain this." Kamala said knowing this was really Tony and Thors specialty. "Uh I'm from a world called Earth its kinda like this one but a little different. I'm from a place called New York or well Jersey City anyway."
"And thats where your from? So there are other worlds out there?" Korra young Inhuman gulped as she nodded at that statement. She waited for Korra's response to that.
"That is….AMAZING!" Korra said amazed. "But wait how did you end up in the snow when I found you?"
"Well thats complicated see me and The Avengers were fighting these bad guys at some kind of portal device and well after these Norn stone things exploded there was this bright light and well. The rest is history." Kamala explained.
"Hold up, the what?" Korra interrupted.
Kamala realised that her new friend had no idea what she was talking about. "Oh right well maybe I should start at the beginning. Maybe with my powers but its a pretty long story."
"Well we've got nothing but time." Korra said as she earth bent some stumps for them to sit on much to her amazement.
"Whoa." Kamala said in surprise so she sat down.
"Okay I guess it starts with my friends." Kamala began. "There came a day unlike any other, where Earths Mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat."
"Heroes?" Korra asked.
"Oh right where I'm from there a people there who have powers or abilities like me, some use them to hurt people while others help to protect people." Kamala explained. "These heroes were there to protect people. Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor and the Hulk, and on that day they became The Avengers."
"Avengers?" Korra asked. "Hm that sounds like a cool name."
"Yeah, anyway they united to fight villains that no single hero could withstand, Masters of Evil, Cabals even corrupt corporations and time travelling conquerors. At every turn the Avengers were there to help." Kamala explained.
"They not only protect people but inspired other heroes to step up and protect their home." Kamala continued and explained there were other heroes in the city, ones who could spin webs and crawl on walls, invisibility, fire powers, stretching, energy based powers, even claws out of their hands. To say Korra was interested was an understatement knowing in the world where Kamala was from had powers beyond belief.
"Wow that sounds incredible, so where do you come into this?" Korra asked.
"Well I actually got my powers some years ago, I was attending this festival celebrating the Avengers and some scientists new discovery Terrigen." Kamala explained.
"Terrigen?" Korra asked.
"Its like this blue crystal thing which is also like some gas. Scientists believed it could be a power source but well…"
"It didn't work out?" Korra guessed.
"Nope, there was an attack, and it caused the Terrigen to turn into gas and those caught in it would be encased into these cocoon things." Korra gasped at that notion someone being entombed sounded bad. "Oh don't worry they come out fine but… when they do they develop powers like me." Kamala explained.
Kamala went onto explain how the Avengers were blamed for what happened to people on A-Day, and how the heroes were disbanded. Kamala however didn't give up and knew A.I.M was up to something. So she set out to find the heroes and answers. Korra had to admit though she's known her for a short time she had to admire her new friends determination. Kamala then said after reuniting the Avengers she became one herself and together stopped A.I.M and exposed them. Kamala kept a few things to herself for obvious reasons.
"Wow, thats quite a story, but these Avengers sound pretty cool." Korra said.
"Yeah so thats my story, so I'm guessing you have one too right for starters why are you in here and how'd you do these chairs anyway?" Kamala then asked.
"Okay listen closely." Korra said as she started drawing in the snow at their feet. She drew out some continent shapes with her finger and some symbols representing certain nations.
"Our world is decided into four nations, each are very different. The Water tribes, The Fire Nation, The Earth Kingdom and the Air Nomads." Korra explained.
"So the nations of the world are associated with the elements?" Kamala asked. "I'm gonna go out on a limb and say theres a reason for that?"
"You're smart." Korra smiled. "Its because of our bending, it's a form of martial art, but it's only a skill some people can do. It's kinda like you having powers but certain people have special chi that controls different elements." Korra explained. "Water benders control water, Earthbenders control earth, Firebenders, fire and Airbenders control the air."
"Wow that sounds cool." Kamala said. "Sounds kinda like super heroes back home but minus the affected by cosmic rays or radioactive spiders anyway."
"Yeah but there is one bender who is tasked with bringing balance and harmony among the nations. The Avatar who can master all four elements." Korra continued.
"Whoa this Avatar sounds amazing so who is he?" Kamala asked.
"Well funny thing." Korra said. "She's standing right in front of you." Kamala was rather taken aback.
Then Korra demonstrated she waved her arms round summoning water from a nearby bucket and swirling it around. Then letting it drop to the ground. Then much more to Kamala's surprise she let loose blasts of fire from her palms straight into the air. Finally she stomped her foot on the ground and a large stone of earth emerged from the ground as Korra then kicked it away.
Kamala was completely gobsmacked and squealed in excitement. Korra just stood over her smugly. "Yep I'm the Avatar and they gotta deal with it."
"Thats awesome!" Kamala exclaimed. "But hold on you said four elements what about air?"
"Oh well thats uh a work in progress."Korra explained. "But theres actually been more than one avatar."
Kamala's interest was now more peaked than before. Korra explained how the Avatar is born of a different nation. Whenever one dies they're reincarnated as another person. First an Airbender, then a Waterbender, then an Earthbender, and finally a Firebender before it starts all over again. Kamala could see this was a reincarnation cycle. However Korra's story wasn't over yet. She then told her the story of her predecessor Avatar Aang had to stop a war that lasted for over a hundred years. Kamala was intrigued even more and was horrified about how his people the Air Nomads were wiped out by Fire Lord Sozin years ago just so that Aang wouldn't get in the way.
Even more surprised to learn Aang was frozen in ice for one hundred years, to the young inhuman seems this Aang had something in common with Captain America. Korra then explained how her teacher Katara and her brother Sokka had discovered Aang and revived him, and together they set out to train the Avatar and restore balance among the nations and to stop the Fire Nation. The stories she shared were beyond belief and thought that Thors tales of Asgard matched up to these in every way.
"Whoa and I thought my world was crazy." Kamala said amazed. "So your now the Avatar?"
"Yeah but I still need to learn about Airbending, which is why Tenzin is coming to the South Pole to train me." Korra explained.
"Who?" Kamala asked.
"Oh he's Aang and Katara's son and the only Airbending master right now." Korra explained.
Just then almost as if on cue Kamala saw something flying across the sky. Upon first glance it looked like a giant bison like creature with white fluffy fur.
"Hey look." Kamala pointed and Korra turned round to see the sky bison in the sky. She looked with an excited smile.
"Its Tenzin he's here! Come on." Korra said excitedly as she practically dragged her new friend with her to meet the Airbending master.
Later:
As the evening began to draw in on the Southern Water Tribe the large Sky Bison named Oogi flew towards it. Slowly descending. On board were its passengers the one riding the bison was a man wearing long orange, red and yellow Airbending robes, with pale skin and blue arrow tattoos on his hands and had a long dark brown beard on his face.
He was with his family which was comprised of three children, there was Jinora, the eldest with brown hair in a single bun on the side of her head with brown eyes, Ikki who was younger than her sister with similar brown hair in small buns and grey eyes. The youngest was their brother Meelo with blue eyes and bald. He was holding onto his fathers head as they traveled.
Tenzin's wife Pema was wearing red and yellow robes with brown hair tied in a pony tail. She had a swollen stomach which was a sign she was expecting a child soon.
From the ground Katara, Korra and Kamala stood and watched the Bison descend to the ground. The young Avenger was completely amazed. She was so excited she pulled out her phone and took a photo with it.
"Wow that things huge!" Kamala said amazed.
"Yes." Katara chuckled as she stood next to her. "The Sky Bison are rather large and riding one is quite an adventure in itself. I should know."
Korra couldn't help but run excitedly towards the bison as it was landing near the main building. Kamala could see she was excited.
"Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Ikki asked excitedly. "It looks like we're there. I know it, this is very familiar! Are we here yet? Are we here yet? Oooh please tell me we're here!"
Eventually after much pestering and calm composure Tenzin descended his sky Bison outside the main building. Despite his youngest son gnawing at his head.
"Yes, Ikki, as I've been telling you for the last fifteen minutes, we are…" Tenzin breathes a sigh of relief. "finally here."
"WEEE!" Ikki cried as she and her elder sister launched off the bisons back riding down the tail on air scooters.
Katara made her way to the bison to greet her son who dismounts his bison to meet her.
"Hello, Mother." Tenzin greeted holding his right arm in front of his chest as a greeting. Meelo was still on his shoulders pulling his fathers ears. His daughters then appeared on both his sides. "I can't tell you how happy I am to see you. Please help me." he said pleading.
Katara laughs warmly as Tenzin bows to allow her to grab her youngest grandson from his shoulders and into her arms. Despite Meelo's protests waving his arms and legs.
"Unhand me strange woman!" Meelo exclaimed.
"Thats your grandmother Meelo." Tenzin reminded.
Meelo manages to push off his grandmothers hands and somersaults above her head and lands on the ground behind her. Which was a surprise to her.
"Its so good to see all of you." Katara smiled greeting her family.
Jinora was the first to greet her grandmother. Being the most inquisitive of the children, she had lots of questions. "Gran Gran, I've been reading all about your old adventures. I've been dying to ask you what happened to Zuko's mom?"
"Well Jinora, its an incredible tale…." However before Katara could share it.
"Gran Gran, you look old. How old are you? And why is it so cold in the South Pole?" Ikki interrupted full of to Jinoras annoyance "Can we make a campfire, and all huddle around it, and tell scary stories, and make snowmen?" Ikki asked clapping her hands together.
"And then can you make the snowmen move with waterbending and chase us? Wouldn't that be fun? Huh? Wouldn't it?"
Katara wasn't sure how to answer to her granddaughters enthusiastic spirit. Meanwhile Pema was making her way down the sky bisons tail. Tenzin just noticed and went to help his pregnant wife down.
"Pema, let me help you. Careful now, careful." Tenzin advised as he took his wife's hands and helped her down to the ground.
"Stop doting in me." Pema insisted whilst grateful for her husbands support she was confident she could handle herself. "I'm not helpless, I'm just pregnant."
She said as she and her husband lay their hands on her belly. Katara then walks up to her daughter in law and gives her a warm hug. She then feels her stomach.
"The baby's strong, I see another airbender in your future." Katara said, much to Pemas surprising dismay.
"All I want is one child like me, a nice non-bender who doesn't blast wind in my face every five seconds." Pema said while Tenzin pulls his beard.
"Mommy look!" Called Meelo the children were playing in the snow. Ikki is building snowmen whilst Jinora zips out of the way before Meelo erupts out of the snow. "I'm a snow bender!"
The snow landed on Pemas head leaving her with a rather dismayed look on her face. Before she shakes the snow of her head."Were Tenzin and his siblings this crazy when they were kids?" Pema asked pointing to her husband.
"Kya and Bumi certainly were, but Tenzin has always been…rather serious." Katara explained putting her hand to her chin.
"Mother please." Tenzin pouted slightly. Then his gaze was directed to a certain individual standing behind his mother who was also standing with another young girl.
"Korra?" He said. Korra with an excited smile runs up to her soon to be air bending teacher. Kamala soon followed.
"Look at you, so big and strong. You've grown into quite the young Avatar." Tenzin said rather proud. Just then he took notice of the young girl in her company. "Ah and who might this be?"
"Oh right." Korra remembered. "Master Tenzin, this is Kamala, long story short while I was out riding Naga I found her lying in the snow so I brought her back her for help."
Tenzin was a little taken aback at why a young girl was out there in the cold like that. But none the less as his children ran by he greeted her. "Well a pleasure to meet you Kamala." He greeted.
"Its a pleasure to meet you Master Tenzin sir." Kamala said bowing a little, not knowing how to properly greet an air bending master.
"Yes Korra found her lying in the snow, I have a feeling theres something special about her." Katara whispered to her son.
Korras attention then turned back to the topic at hand. "I'm so glad your here I can't wait to get started with my training!" She said rather excitedly.
"Yes, well.." Tenzin said with a less than good sigh.
"Your going to have to tell her sooner or later." Pema told her husband.
"Wait tell me what?" Korra asked.
"Uh oh." Kamala knew the look that Tenzin was given all too well. Her own parents had that look as did Bruce a few times too.
Katara agreed with Kamala's own worries and knew what was wrong. "You're not staying are you?"
"I'm afraid not. We're only visiting for the night. Then I have to return to Republic City." Tenzin answered with regret in his voice.
Korra had a look of disapointment on her face hearing that she won't be learning how to airbend like she thought. Kamala could see that Korra was upset.
"But ... no, you're supposed to move here. You're supposed to teach me." Korra said finding this news hard to understand.
"Hey K,Korra i..its okay I'm sure it's not permanent right?" Kamala tried.
"I'm sorry, Korra. Your airbending training is going to have to wait." Tenzin said sadly.
Later that night:
In the main building of the compound the White Lotus members, Tenzin and Korra were sat round the table to discuss the recent change in plans for the young Avatars training. Kamala was present at the table too for emotional support and right now she defiantly needed it.
"So, how long until you're ready to teach me airbending? A week? A month?" Korra asked.
"It could be much longer." Tenzin explained.
"I don't understand, why are you making me wait?" Korra asked disappointed.
"I'm sure he has a reason, right?" Kamala then asked.
"Yes I do have a reason." Tenzin explained to the two of them. "I have a responsibility to Republic City. I am one of its leaders, and the situation there is very unstable right now."
"You mean like gangs fighting over turf or something?" Kamala asked. Which did raise an eyebrow among the elders present at the table.
"Uh not that I know anything about that I..just guessed." Kamala covered up not sure if it was a good idea to mention the concept of parallel worlds to them yet. Which Korra understood.
"Ah something like that young Kamala." Tenzin said sighing.
"But you also have a responsibility to teach me." Korra reminded. "Believe me, I'd be happy to find another airbending master, but you're the only one. We're stuck with each other."
"I wish there were another way." Tenzin said.
Just then a lightbulb went off in Kamala's head an idea had formed. "Well what if there was."
Everyones attention was then drawn onto the young polymorph. "Go on?" Korra asked.
"Well if Master Tenzin can't move down here to train Korra, then what if she went to the city instead so he could train her and watch the city at the same time?" Kamala voiced.
Korra's eyes lit up with excitement. "Yes thats it! Its perfect your brilliant Kamala!" She said holding her shoulders.
"Absolutely not! The city is far too dangerous." The leader of the White Lotus said indignantly."Avatar Aang tasked us with keeping Korra safe while she mastered the four elements."
"I get that, but I don't think keeping me locked up in this compound like a prisoner is what he had in mind." Korra voiced in defiance.
"She's got a point." Kamala agreed. "I mean the Avatars supposed to bring balance to the world right? But how can she bring balance to the world if she hasn't experienced it outside the confines of these walls?"
"Be that as it may it is our task to keep the Avatar safe until she masters the elements before she can be ready to fulfil her duties. Sending her out now without knowing what to expect could invite disaster." The White Lotus leader said.
"But keeping her here isn't helping her either." Kamala tried. "I mean didn't the previous Avatar set out to bring balance before he mastered the elements?"
"Don't you bring my father into this!" Tenzin said rather abruptly.
Kamala saw the look on Tenzins face telling her not to go into that area. To her it was the same look she got from her father about using her powers. Or even from a certain scientist before he turned super villain.
"Don't talk to her like that she's only trying to help!" Korra exclaimed.
Tenzin calmed down before he spoke to the two again. "I know this is difficult to accept, but it's not the right time for you to come to the city."
"Whatever." Korra said dismissively as she got up from the table and left the dining room slamming the door behind her. Tenzin and The Leader of the White Lotus let out a saddened sigh at the same time.
Kamala decided to take her leave too before it got more grim. "For the record, keeping her locked up here's gonna blow up in your faces." She said before taking her leave.
Kamala left the building and looked to see that Korra was long gone. She'd thought about going to look for her but thought it best to give her some space. Before she went back to her room suddenly something hit her in the face. It was a snow ball.
"Ohh hey who threw that?!" Kamala said.
Just then the three airbender kids appeared out of the cover of the snow around the building. Meelo appeared on the left whilst Jinora and Ikki appeared from the right.
"Oh sorry miss we didn't see you there, we were aiming for our brother." Jinora explained.
"Its okay I'm sure it was only for a bit of fun." Kamala said in an understanding way. "Your Tenzin's children right?"
"Yes, I'm Ikki, this is Jinora and Meelo." Ikki introduced pointing to her siblings.
"Your Korra's new friend aren't you?" Jinora guessed.
"Yeah. My name's Kamala." Kamala said kneeling down to their height.
"Kamala, thats a nice name." Ikki said.
"You don't look water tribe whats with the scarf?" Meelo noticed.
"Oh it's just something my mom got me." Kamala explained. "But no I'm not from around here, I guess you could say I'm from somewhere far far away from here."
"So your not a water bender?" Jinora asked.
Kamala did wonder if she should show off her 'bending' on one hand these kids could totally freak out, on the other hand they could see her as different and that would then reach with one deep breath she decided to take a leap of faith.
"Hey, can you kids keep a secret?" Kamala asked.
"Yes." They said in unison.
"Well I'm a special kind of bender." Kamala explained and saw a White Lotus guard walking nearby. "Watch this."
So Kamala put her hand in the snow then stretched it out much to the surprise of the children. Her hand stretched through the snow then behind the guard. She raised her hand and tapped the guard on the shoulder. He turned round and saw there was no-one there. When he turned back Kamala tapped the guard on his other shoulder he turned round and saw nothing.
Kamala retracted her hand back to her leaving the airbender kids completely speechless. Kamala was a little nervous she wasn't sure how they'd react.
"That. Was….INCRECIBLE!" Ikki exclaimed. "Can you stretch more than just your arms, like your legs. head or feet?"
"I've never seen bending like that before?" Jinora said amazed.
"Your a stretchbender!" Meelo said.
Kamala let out a sigh of relief knowing that she wasn't being judged negatively on her powers. However whilst she was answering the questions of the inquisitive young Airbender's. She didn't know that from his window Tenzin had witnessed the whole thing.
"Incredible." He breathed. He knew his mother said there was something special about the girl Korra rescued but he didn't think she meant like this.
The Next Day:
The following morning Tenzin and his family were all on board Oogie ready for the trip back to their home in Republic City. Katara was there to see her family off on their long journey.
"Goodbye, Gran Gran!" Ikki called as they waved to Katara before Tenzin took the reins of his bison.
"Oogi, yip-yip!" Tenzin cracked the reins. The bison then grunts as he took to the sky leaving the South Pole behind.
Katara wiped away a lone tear running down her face as she saw her family disappeared from view. "Katara." Called a voice and she looked to see Kamala coming to see her.
"Hello Kamala, how are you this morning?" She asked.
"Fine thanks, listen have you seen Korra anywhere?" Kamala asked.
"Ah, last time I saw her she went out for a ride with Naga, but she hasn't returned yet." Katara said a little dismayed.
"She's still hurt about last night." Kamala remembered.
"Yes, I'm afraid she is." Katara said.
Kamala was a little worried about Korra, from what she told her she was ready to get out there. But only to be confined once again. She couldn't help but sympathise. She had to keep her powers hidden after the events of A-Day but after finding evidence on A.I.M's servers she had to go out into the world and make a difference.
Far away looking over a ridge was Naga and Korra who watched as Oogi, and Tenzin's family in tow left the South Pole far behind. Korra was still being under surveillance by two White Lotus sentries. She looks out on the horizon arms and legs close to her face while Naga whined in sadness.
Korra was deep in thought, she was so eager to learn air bending but now only to be told she couldn't because of whatever was going on in Republic City. She looked with a determined glare, she wasn't going to sit around and be confined like a prisoner. With a tight grip on her arms she decided it was time for her to forge her own path.
Later that evening:
That night in the pens, the lamps were lit. In her pen Naga was asleep near an igloo. Just then she was awoken by the arrival of Korra. She stood up as Korra was reaching for the Polar Bear dogs saddle. She was about to tie it on when.
"Hey Korra." Korra yelped in fright when she looked and saw Kamala was hiding next to the igloo she had a small tribal bag round her shoulder.
"Oh sorry if I scared you, I was kinda waiting for you down here." Kamala apologised. "Let me guess your gonna sneak out of the compound and go to this Republic City place and learn Airbending there. Despite Tenzin and those White Lotus jerks telling you otherwise?"
Korra had to admit she was impressed with her friends deductive thoughts. "Well you got the jerk part down at least." Korra admitted. "Look Kamala I need to do this don't try to stop me."
But to her surprise Kamala could only smile. "Who's trying to stop you? I'm coming with you." She then opened her bag to reveal she had her costume inside it. "Just had to pick up something."
Korra was a little surprised. "You sure about this?"
"Yeah, like you I need to do this. Before I came here the Avengers got caught in that light too. If I ended up here maybe the others got here too maybe even in the city." Kamala said. "Plus, I kinda know a thing or two about running away to find yourself."
The Avatar in training gave a warm smile at that statement and so she grabbed the saddle. "Well help me attach Naga's saddle."
"You got it." Kamala smiled as she helped Korra to place the saddle on the Polar Bear dogs back, and tightened the straps.
Just as they were ready to leave. "Nice night for an escape, isn't it?" The two jumped as they saw Katara standing in the stable entrance way.
"I have to leave. I have to find my own path as the Avatar." Korra said hoping the only person who would understand her situation other than Kamala was her teacher.
Katara was silent for a brief moment before she looked to the two teenagers and spoke. "I know you do."
Korra's saddened expression turned to a grateful smile knowing that Katara understood why she was doing what she had to do.
"Aang's time has passed." Katara began. "My brother and many of my friends are gone. It's time for you and your generation to take over the responsibility of keeping peace and balance in the world."
Katara places her hand on her students shoulder looking at her with pride. "And I think you're going to be a great Avatar."
"Thank you." Korra said as she hugged her. Kamala watched with a warm smile at this scene. Then the elder water bender looked to the young Avenger.
"And you Kamala, I have the feeling theres something special about you, and I trust you will help Korra on her journey." Katara said to her. "As I trust that she will help you."
"I will." Kamala smiled. Then to her surprise the elder water bender hugged her as well. Which she was more than happy to return.
"Goodbye to the both of you." Katara said.
On the outskirts of the compound a large snowbound erupted and emerging from it was Korra followed by Kamala and Naga. The Polarbear dog shook the wet snow off her fur as Korra mounted her saddle and Kamala sat behind her. They rode off into the night. However there was one stop that Korra had to make before they headed out into the world.
They arrived at a small village of igloo huts, these belonged to the Southern Tribes people. Korra had stopped her to see her parents Senna and Tonraq. Upon arrival her parents were surprised to see their daughter, but after she explained everything to them and about her friend Kamala they understood what she was doing.
"Mom, Dad. I'll miss you both." Korra said to the both of them. But she had to admit this was the hardest thing she had to do in her life.
"We love you so much." Senna said, her voice was trembling almost at breaking point. Her father was worried about his little girl as well. But when they found out she was the Avatar they knew this day would come.
Kamala watched from a distance. Seeing this scene between Korra and her parents, made her think about the impact her leaving to find the Avengers/resistance did to her own parents and family. She had to admit a part of her wished she told her father the truth before she'd left but couldn't for obvious reasons.
Soon Korra mounted Naga and the two of them set off into the night leaving her parents behind. They soon arrived at the shipping dock. They managed to sneak aboard a ship bound for Republic City. Kamala mentally thanked herself for remembering all the stealth lessons she took with Natasha.
Soon the ship was underway traveling across the sea under the light of a full moon. Inside the cargo hold loaded with crates and Satomobile tied down. Behind a stack of crates, Naga was fast asleep. Korra and Kamala meanwhile were lying on her looking with content.
"So you excited?" Kamala asked.
"Hard not to be, what about you?" Korra asked.
"Well being a city girl myself I'm kinda used to it, but this is a parallel universe hard to tell what to expect." Kamala said a little excited herself.
"You sound like its your first time?" Korra noticed.
"Getting accidentally sent to a parallel universe yeah thats a first." Kamala said. "You know I wrote a fan fiction once where The Avengers get sent to an alternate universe where they team up with a teenager who's dads a super hero. Only to find out he wasn't what he seemed."
"Fan what?" Korra said not understanding what she meant by that.
"Oh it's a long story." Kamala brushed off.
Korra then had an idea to pass the time on the trip. "So, these Avengers, what are they like. I mean I know you've told me a few things from your stories but, whats it like personally?"
"Well its a long story." Kamala said.
"We have nothing but time." Korra explained.
So as the night passed on Kamala told Korra about the Avengers. Their personalities, how they helped her become a better hero. Korra took an interest in the story of Thor, and how he was a god of Thunder, she even shared how fire benders could use lightning too. Kamala even shared some stories about Iron man and the many prank wars they would get into. Most of the stories involved how she would talk to Natasha and Bruce if she was ever in doubt and they remind her never to give up. In telling the story of Captain America, Korra was amazed to learn he was frozen in ice for a decade. This to her was like with Aang when he was frozen.
As the dawn began to break as the ship continued to sail. The two girls were fast asleep with Naga. Just then they heard the sound of metal clanging and the ship moving back and fourth. Kamala woke up and she realised it meant one thing.
"Korra, Korra wake up." She said shaking her shoulder waking her up. "I think we're here."
Korra's eyes widened with excitement. "Naga we're here." She said nudging her polar bear dogs paw to wake her up.
The door suddenly began to open and the light from the morning sun shining through nearly blinding the two teenagers. They hid behind the crates. The crew were unloading and making sure everything was in order. All of a sudden they heard loud clanging noises and something rode past them taking them by surprise.
Naga with Korra and Kamala in tow rode fast off the ship and down the ramp taking everyone there by surprise that they had a couple of stowaways the whole trip.
"Thanks for the ride!" Korra thanked and Kamala just waved in response. The two rode the polar bear dog through the streets and looked at the view of the city from the bay area.
They saw Kyoshi bridge ahead of them and a panoramic view of the city before them. Korra was instantly taken in by the view in front of them. To Kamala being a city girl herself it did remind her of New York but only like she was in a steampunk 1940's black and white film. They looked and saw large airships flying the skies above them.
"Wow, look at this place Kamala." Korra said amazed as the two of them looked at the vast number of cars gridlocked on the bridge. "I've never seen so many Satomobiles before."
"Thats what you call them here?" Kamala wondered. "We just call them cars back where I'm from."
"So what do you think?" Korra asked.
"Well it reminds me of New York just in a steampunk movie, but maybe we should find Tenzin then do some sight seeing." Kamala suggested.
Just then as they looked out on the water front they saw before them a small island in the distance and on it was a statue. It was of Avatar Aang himself. Korra could only look at the statue in awe and admiration, she hoped she would become as great an Avatar as Aang was.
"So…is that?" Kamala guessed.
"Yeah, thats Aang." Korra breathed in admiration.
As they looked over the sea they looked to the left of the Avatar Aang memorial statue there was another island not too far away. There was a temple structure similar to that of the traditional air nomad temples.
"Air Temple Island. That's where Tenzin lives." Korra pointed to her friend then looked to Naga. "You ready for a little swim, girl?"
However Naga had other ideas when she sniffed the air around her until she caught the scent of something rather delicious. She took off running. Surprising the two girls.
"Whoa Naga!" Kamala exclaimed.
"Okay, okay! Food first, then air temple!" Korra said.
It wasn't the easiest of rides Naga ran like a polar bear dog possessed. But the problem was she was running in the middle of the road into incoming traffic.
"Watch it Naga! Look out!" Korra exclaimed.
"CAR!" Kamala yelled as they narrowly avoided a collision with an incoming truck which swerved slamming into another Sato mobile.
"SORRY!" Kamala called.
"Watch where you're going!" Called a pedestrian.
Naga kept running through the incoming pedestrians like she didn't even know they were there. Kamala held onto Korra tightly as she didn't want to fall off. This was like the time she was at the carnival with Hawkeye and Falcon on their day off and Clint dared her to try the bronco ride.
"Whoops, sorry about that. Excuse us." Korra apologised to the Pedestrians as they rode by. "Coming through. Heads up"
"Eh, sorry, we're new in town." Kamala called.
Then suddenly they came to a stop, Naga had her nose close to the ground following the scene of the food that had caught her attention. They soon arrived at a small hut with orange dog poked her head through the curtains and saw the vendor who was a woman. Korra and Kamala then poked their heads through the curtains. Naga was about to open her mouth and have something to eat.
"Naga wait." Korra told her sternly.
"Yeah we don't eat yet." Kamala agreed.
The two disembarked from the whining Polar Bear dog and then went to meet the vendor and look over the food choices. Which seemed to be food on a stick. She picked one up and spoke to the shop keeper.
"We'll take one of everything, please." Korra said.
"That will be twenty yuans." The shop keeper said rather one thing that Korra didn't consider. She looked to Kamala for help and she searched her bag but then realised something.
"Uh I think I left my wallet in my other costume." Kamala cringed.
The two then looked to the shopkeeper. "Uh ... we don't have any money?"
The shopkeeper snatched the meat snack tick right out of the Avatar in trainings hand forcing the two of them to put up a karate hand pose in surprise.
"Then what good are you two to me!" The shop owner snapped.
With that the two walked away defeated. "Sheesh she's worse than the hotdog vendors back home." Kamala said.
The two of them then looked to Naga who was still whining in hunger. Korra just patted her on the neck in sympathy.
"Don't worry girl." Korra tried as the polar bear dog hung her head in disappointment.
"Yeah don't worry Naga, this is a big city I'm sure we can find something to rustle up." Kamala consoled as two walked alongside Naga down the sidewalks still trying to cheer her up.
Eventually they found some free food. They were now in the city park fishing. Naga had dipped her head into the water and brought out a fish in her mouth. Meanwhile Korra had caught some fish and used her fire bending to cook them.
She handed one stick to Kamala and she accepted it. She had been fishing once with her parents even Bruce on days when he wasn't the two were about to enjoy their fried fish snake. When suddenly a homeless man with baggy clothes and grey hair emerged from a nearby bush. Startling them.
"Uh, say, think I can I get one of them tasty-smelling fishies?" The homeless man named Gommu asked.
"Oh uh yeah sure." Korra said. With that he strolled out of the bush and helped himself to one of the fish.
It was a little awkward. "So do you…live in that bush?" Kamala asked.
"Yes presently that is what I do call home." Gommu explained. "Took me a while to procure a bush that beauteous. This park is quite popular with all the vagabonds."
"So there are a lot of you out here?" Korra asked unsure. "I thought everyone in this city was living it up."
"Well most people do Korra, but some don't have it as easy." Kamala explained. "I mean there are people living on the streets back where I'm from and some try to help them."
"I like your friends positivity." Gommu chuckled. "But you two have got a lot to learn newcomers. Welcome to Republic City." He then greeted with open arms.
Korra and Kamala looked at each other with arched eyebrows at that statement. All of a sudden the sound of a loud whistle caught their attention. It was a police whistle. They looked and saw there was a patrolman in grey uniform and a round helmet hat.
"Hey, you two!" He called making Korra and Kamala look in shock "Stop! You can't fish here!" He was running towards them.
The vagabond quickly jumped up and made a quick dash to his bush. "You girls best skedaddle!" He advised.
Wasting no time Korra whistled on her fingers for Naga who responded and the two quickly mounted the Polar Bear dog and rode away. The guard was too late to catch up and was out of breath.
The guard pants heavily trying to catch his breath. Not even noticing Gommu popping out of his bush and waving goodby to the newcomers.
Later Korra and Kamala rode Naga who strolled along the park. One of the pedestrians passing by looked at the polar bear dog with interest. Just then they heard the static noise of a megaphone. It was a protester dressed in grey and had black sideburns. He was standing in front of a poster of a hooded man in black and brown wearing a kabuki mask.
"Are you tired of living under the tyranny of benders? Then join the Equalists!" The Protester called. "For too long, the bending elite of this city have forced nonbenders to live as lower class citizens. Join Amon, and together we will tear down the bending establishment."
Korra, Kamala and Naga had just rode by when people were listening to the protesters rants. The Avatar in training couldn't believe what she was hearing about people hating benders. She decided to speak out at this.
"What are you talking about?" Korra spoke up proudly. "Bending is the coolest thing in the world."
"Oh yeah? Let me guess you and your friend are benders." Said the Protester eyeing the two unimpressed.
"Well she is but me its uh..well its complicated." Kamala explained.
"Then I bet you'd just love to knock me off this platform with some waterbending, huh?" The Protester said.
"I'm seriously thinking about it." Korra said a little irritated.
"Korra don't do it he's trying to bait you." Kamala whispered under her breath.
"This is what's wrong with this city! Benders like this girl only use their power to oppress us!" The Protester said addressing the non bending citizens.
The citezens then turned into an angered crowed looking at Kamala and Korra seeing the protesters point of view. Some even called out telling them to leave. To Kamala this was like how some people back home viewed not just heroes but also Inhumans and Mutants too.
"What? I'm not oppressing anyone! You're ... you're oppressing yourselves!" Korra tried to no evail.
"Oh yeah that told them." Kamala said. As the two rode away from the angry mob.
"That doesn't make sense!" The protester called out to them.
Once far enough away Korra vented to Kamala about what they had just seen. "Can you believe them I mean living under the tyranny of Benders thats ridiculous!" Korra said.
"Hey don't let that get to you. I mean yeah we know how great bending can be. But some people can be afraid of the power we wield." Kamala said. "I mean back home its the same thing, some even call us freaks or diseased. Even super heroes take this negativity people and media moguls calling them menaces or vigilantes and most believe what they hear and not what they see."
The young Avatar took a moment to think about what Kamala had said. Never really taking into account the peoples point of view.
"I never really thought about it like that." Korra said in a rather dumbfounded tone.
"Yeah and if you think that guys blabbing is bad, you've never heard the trash talk of J Jonah Jameson have you?" Kamala joked.
Later the three were walking down a lonely street. Korra and Kamala were walking alongside Naga down the street. They were still trying to find their way to Air Temple island but had to concede to the fact they were lost.
Just then they saw a couple of shopkeepers outside a shop. So Kamala suggested they ask directions. "Excuse me, I think my friend and I are lost .How do we get to Air Temple Island from here?" Korra asked.
"Just head down this street an…" However the female shopkeepers words were interrupted by the arrival of a tricked out hotrod Satomobile with a gold dragon face on the front.
"You two girls should get moving, it isn't safe." The Shopkeeper said who jumped up in fear before she and the man made themselves scarce.
The car pulled up outside a shop and getting out of it were three men. They were sleezy looking their leader wore a violet coloured coat with white and grey clothing with a grey hat. This indicated he was a water bender. Another was a rather large man leaning forwards wearing green and grey clothing and his accomplice wore black and grey clothing had a pale complexion with a scar going down his left eye. He wore a red scarf round his neck.
They approached an old shopkeeper working on his Phonograph. "Mr. Chung, please tell me that you have my money, or else I can't guarantee I can protect your fine establishment." The leader said gesturing to his accomplice who lit fire in his hand.
Kamala could see this was a protection racket from a couple of thugs. To her these guys looked like a-couple of Hammerhead wannabes who a certain spider friend of hers fights on a daily basis.
The shopkeeper was rather scared. He knew they were here for their protection money. Which he didn't have. "I'm sorry, business has been slow." Mr Chung pleaded before offering one of his phonographs. "Please, take one of my phonographs."
Sadly the thugs weren't very interested in music and the Firebender simply performs an ark fire kick knocking the phonograph to the floor and smashing it to bits while the fire burned the rest. Guess some people don't have a taste in music.
"My friend here is not a music lover." The leader taunted "Give me the money, or else…"
"Or else what hoodlum?!" Called a voice the gangsters turned round to see the water tribe girl standing behind them with her hand on her seemed more relaxed in a similar pose. But she looked at Korra with an arched eyebrow. She wasn't sure about her friends choice of intro catchphrase.
"Hoodlum? oh boy Mr Stark would have kittens if he heard that." Kamala said to herself under her breath.
The three bending gangsters turned to face the two girls. The way they looked at each other was something out of an action film. The gangsters didn't look that intimidated by the water tribe girl at all. All they could do was laugh. They clearly didn't know who they were dealing with.
"Since you two ladies are obviously fresh off the boat, let me explain a couple things." The leader said smugly. Mr Chung was hiding in his shop while the other shop keepers watched. "You're in Triple Threat Triad territory, and we're about to put you, in the hospital." The gang leader pointed at the two of them.
Kamala saw these guys weren't very intimidating as villains she and the Avengers have seen in the past like the wreaking wasn't very imitated by these gangsters either.
"You're the only ones who are gonna need a hospital." Korra said confidently pounding her fist into her hand.
"Yeah and, for your sake, I hope there's one nearby." Kamala joined in pointing at them.
That comeback made the three 'hoodlums' scowl at them. "Who do you think you are?" The leader scowled.
"Why don't you come and find out." Korra smirked cracking her knuckles.
Kamala knew she could help, but thought it best to stay out of the firing line for now. Given she was in a parallel world she wasn't sure how people would react to her powers. So she thought it best to let Korra handle this.
The leaders eye twitched then he fired a water bullet from a secret water sleeve in his coat. However Korra merely moved her hand to redirect it at the gang leader which froze around his head. He stumbles to receive a spin kick from Korra banging him into the front of the car shattering the ice and knocking him out.
"Ooo talk about a brain freeze." Kamala cringed.
The Earthbender enforcer cringed with the same look Kamala had. He was about to take and Earthbending stance, but Korra beat him to it bending the earth below his feet and sent him flying straight into the air. Much to the amazement of the shopkeepers.
"What just happened?" Said the woman.
"Did she just earthbend?" Said the man in equal surprise.
The earth bender gangster sprung off a cable from a building hit a sign face first then bounced off a shop retractable roof. Grabbed onto some streamers only for them to tear and he landed straight into a fruit stall.
The firebender was the only one left standing in a panic he formed a fireball between his hands and launched it at Korra. But she merely dissipated it and grabbed onto his hands.
The shopkeepers were more surprised than they were before. "Can she firebend too?" The woman said surprised clinging to the male shop keeper.
"Could she be?" The male shopkeeper wondered.
"Yep she so is." Kamala smiled. Just as Korra swung the firebender round and grunted as she tossed him into a store window where he hit a few clocks as he fell flat on his back.
The two girls went to the window and looked upon Korra's victory blow. "Heh got an idea about who I am now, chumps?" she said rather cocky.
Kamala wasn't so sure. "Uh Korra, you do know what 'keeping collateral damage to a minimum' means, right?"
"What?" Korra shrugged. However at that moment they heard the sound of a car engine.
Zooming in was the red hot rod driven by the other two gangsters. Korra and Kamala moved out of the way just as the firebender hobbled out of the store window.
"Come on!" Called his earth bender colleague. The fire bender gangster made a run for it just as the earth bender gangster pulls up a piece of earth catapulting the firebender into the back of the car.
Korra was about to run after them but Kamala went ahead of her. "I got this one." She said running after the car.
At first she wasn't sure but she remembered what her father said to her. "Being good isn't a thing you are its what you do."
"I sure hope I don't regret this." She whispered and with one swift motion. "EMBIGGEN!" She exclaimed and extended her arms out much to the surprise of the shopkeepers and grabbed the wheels of the car.
She secured her feet to the ground trying to hold them back. However this wasn't like the cars back in New York and the wheels were ripped clean off causing the car to swerve and crash into another shop window down the street.
The two girls quickly ran to the store and arrived to see the gangsters fall out of the car groaning unconsciously. "Opps." Kamala said in concern as she dropped the wheels she'd ripped off the car.
"Way to catch some crooks kid!" Korra said putting her hand on her friends shoulder. Naga just looked with an arched eyebrow at the two.
The shopkeepers were in complete shock at what they'd just seen. "What kind of bender was she?" The woman asked.
Sadly however their celebration was premature, for all of a sudden a loud siren sounded from above. Which got the girls attention and Naga started to howl at the noise. They raised their heads to where the noise was coming from and they looked up to see a rather large airship arriving on the scene.
"Police! Freeze where you are!" Called a voice on the intercom. Kamala looked in fright, normally she'd be glad to see the cops arrive to take away supervillains but she wasn't wearing her costume. So she had a bad feeling about this.
Jumping out of the side of the airship were officers wearing silver samurai like armour and had cable harnesses strapped to their backs. They wore police caps which had armoured sides on them too. They released two sets of cables from their armours to help slow their descent.
"Whoa!" Kamala said in surprise for a moment it was almost as if Black Widow or S.H.I.E.L.D had arrived on the scene.
"Cool metal benders!" Korra said amazed.
The sergeant of the team landed in front of his men as they retracted their cables into their armour just looked casual about this while Kamala looked a little nervous as did Naga.
"My friend and I caught the bad guys for you, officers." Korra said just as said bag guys emerged from the shop groaning and disoriented from the crash.
"Arrest them." Sargent Saikhan pointed to the thugs. The officers complied and fired several cables at the gangsters round their arms tying them up as they hit the ground. Whilst the officers rounded the gangsters up and took them away Saikhan approached Korra and Kamala.
"You two are under arrest, too." He said to them.
Korra gasped in shock she was hoping for words of praise not this. Kamala's eyes shrunk in horror they were in for trouble now.
"Uh oh." Was all Kamala could say.
"What do you mean we're under arrest?" Korra questioned as she pointed at the gangsters. "Those are the bad guys over there! They were smashing up a shop!"
"Yeah we, we were only trying to help?" Kamala tried.
"From the looks of it, you and your friend smashed up a lot more than that." Saikhan said looking at the damaged shops and mess in the street. Korra was starting to see Kamala's point about keeping collateral damage to a minimum.
"We're sorry we didn't mean too but things just, got out of hand!" Kamala tried to explain.
However the police sergeant didn't buy that. "Hm a likely story, you two are coming in for questioning." Saikhan fired cables from his right gauntlet and tried to ensnare the girls only for Korra to narrowly dodge them and grab onto the cable.
"Wait, you… you can't arrest us! Please let us explain." Korra tried whilst her biceps trembled trying to hold back the cable.
"You both can explain yourselves all you like down at headquarters." Saikhan said trying to pull his cables back.
He managed to withdraw his cables and made another attack on Korra. He bends the metal inside the cables and tries to ensnare her. She and Kamala manage to dodge the cables and tumble backwards. Saikhan is about to ensnare her with her cables until.
"No get back!" Kamala panicked and enlarged her hands to push the police Sergeant back and tumbled to the ground.
The other officers were in complete shock at what they'd seen. Kamala was shaken when she retracted her hands back to normal size. She realised what she had just done.
"Oh no no no now we're in trouble!" Kamala panicked.
Before Saikhan could act Naga came to the rescue knocking the officers back and tumbling to the ground. Korra quickly got up and grabbed Kamala's arm.
"Come on!" She said as the two friends mounted the polar bear dog and made their escape.
The metalbending officers gave chase to the runners. One leaped and tried to get on Naga but Kamala just stretched out her foot and kicked him back. He tumbled to the ground as his comrade went to check up on him the other extended a cable line and swung after them.
He swung in the air and fired another cable towards the escaping trio but missed and smashed the road instead. Naga dashes round a street corner nearly hitting a family who shrieked as they fled.
They saw the officer was still behind them so Kamala decided to act. She stretched her legs around Nagas body so she's be secured.
"Korra hold on!" Kamala said and before her friend could answer she extended her arms and grabbed onto the building roofs. With one grunt they shoot into the air like a catapult. The officer was completely taken by surprise Kamala then swings out her and and the trio swing through the air screaming as they landed a distance away from the officer.
"Whew!" Kamala breathed retracting her arms. "Beat that Spidey!"
They reached a small river bridge but suddenly out of nowhere the officer appeared on one of the rooftops. This guy was clearly fast on the cables. He threw a cable and caught Korra's pony tail. She cried in pain as he pulled back on it.
"Korra!" Kamala exclaimed. Korra grunted in anger as she bent the water in the river and made a wall of ice behind her.
The officer shrieked as he wasn't in time to stop and crashed face first into the ice wall. Kamala managed to release the cable round Korra hair much to her relief. They looked back and saw the officer fall backwards from the ice wall in a cartoon fashion.
"Ooo thats gonna leave a mark." Kamala said. "Ride like the wind Naga!" The two friends smiled as they rode ahead and reached a rail bridge in the distance. Naga climbed the stairs and onto the bridge.
A Satomobile swerved trying to avoid the Polarbear dog and people moved out of the way shrieking to avoid being trampled. The two rode ahead but suddenly noticed the metal bending officers riding the rail cables near the bridge. Kamala could see these cops were more persistent than A.I.M robots when she ran from them.
"Korra we need to get out of here!" Kamala exclaimed to her friend.
"Get ready to stretch!" Korra said. She pulled Naga to the left and towards the edge of the bridge just as a train ran by.
Kamala stretched out her hand just as Naga leaped from the bridge. Kamala grabbed onto the train and she was able to propel themselves across onto the had one foot hanging over the edge and managed to pull herself up. Korra breathed a sigh of relief as it seemed they ditched the cops following them.
Korra looked to the right and saw their intended destination Air Temple island from the fast moving train. They were closer than they were before.
"Theres Air Temple island if we get there Tenzin can help us out." Korra said to Kamala. However before she could answer they heard a siren and above them was a police airship with a golden arch police symbol.
"If we can shake them first!" Kamala exclaimed.
"Hang on!" Korra cried and had Naga ride forwards as fast as she could. They saw a building in the distance the train was close to.
In what felt like slow motion Naga leaped from the bridge and Kamala extended her arms grabbing onto the building and with her strength swung them across the building. They were about to escape when suddenly cables from the airship ensnared Naga by the legs. She tried to struggle free.
Kamalas hands were caught before she could retract them. Korra hurried to try and free them both but was soon ensnared in cables as well. The two struggled to break free but in the end it was no use. They were caught.
Soon they were carried all the way to Police headquarters in Republic City and on its front was a large statue of Toph Beifong herself as she was the chief of police before she retired. Kamala and Korra were in the interrogation room handcuffed to the table as they sat next to each other waiting to be questioned.
"Well that went poorly." Kamala grumbled.
Just then the doors to the interrogation room slid open to reveal a woman with grey hair a physical fit body, had a pair of scars on the right of her face. She wore a black version of the police armour, pale skin and green eyes. She didn't look happy with the two ladies in her interrogation room.
"Let's see." Lin began as she read out the charges on a clipboard. "Multiple counts of destruction of private and city property, not to mention evading arrest …" Lin slammed the clip board on the table startling Kamala and Korra. "You ladies are in a whole mess of trouble."
"But we didn't do anything wrong!" Kamala pleaded. "We were only trying to help."
"Yeah there were some thugs threatening a helpless shopkeeper, and I had…" Korra tried as well.
"Can it!" Lin said rather aggressively. "You should have called the police and stayed out of the way." She walked to the other side of the table.
"So wait we just sit by and do nothing while some old man gets harassed by a bunch of thugs?!" Kamala questioned loudly.
"You want to watch your tone young lady, you on thin enough ice as it is." Lin warned sternly. "Saikhan told me what happened I'm not sure what kind of bender you are but when you assault my officers thats an offence."
"Out of defense! I..I just panicked I didn't mean to attack them." Kamala protested but a stern look from Lin told her to sit down and she did since she didn't want to get into any more trouble.
"Please it's not her fault she had little to do with this." Korra said not liking seeing Kamala get into trouble. "It's my duty to help people. See, I'm the Avatar." She smiled humbly.
However that didn't seem to phase Lin at all as she placed the clip board down. "Oh, I am well aware of who you are." Lin said rather unimpressed. "And your Avatar title might impress some people, but not me."
"But she's the bringer of balance her predecessor was a hero wasn't he?" Kamala asked.
"Thats ancient history." Lin said.
Korra could see she was getting nowhere with this officer. "All right, fine. Then we want to talk to whoever's in charge."
"You're talking to her. I'm Chief Beifong." She answered as she sat down in the chair opposite the two girls. Kamala just gulped at that notion knowing they were in the presence of the chief of police. Korra however seemed to know her name very well.
"Wait Beifong?" Korra said in surprise and excitement. "Lin Beifong? You're Toph's daughter!"
"Toph?" Kamala said then remembered the stories Korra told her back in the South Pole. "You mean that blind earth bender who helped Aang during the war?"
"Yes and this is her daughter." Korra confirmed excitedly.
"What of it?" Lin said.
"Well then, why are you treating us like criminals?" Korra asked. "Avatar Aang and your mother were friends. They saved the world together."
" That's ancient history." Lin said and raised her tone. "And it's got diddly-squat to do with the mess you're in right now. You can't just waltz in here and dole out vigilante justice like you own the place!"
"Hey don't get me wrong I get how bad vigilantism can be but maybe some of them are trying to help." Kamala explained. "Besides we weren't trying to be vigilantes."
"Oh really." Lin said as she pulled out a certain costume and placed it down on the table. "Then whats this I found inside your bag?"
Kamala started to panic. "I..its just a burkini my mom bought it for me its just uh a sign of modesty and faith."
"With a lightning bolt and a mask." Lin said. "hmm a likely story. Honestly this is just like that nut who came here yesterday."
Korra and Kamala looked at each other a little confused. "What nut?" Korra asked.
"Oh just some crazy man who appeared out of nowhere claiming he was a god of thunder." Lin simply voiced.
Kamala's eyes widened at the mention of the word 'god of thunder.' But before she could say anything else a section of the room wall slid down to reveal an officer on the other side of a peephole.
"Chief" Said the officer getting their attention. "Councilman Tenzin is here."
Lin just sighed rather annoyed. "Let him in." She said.
Kamala and Korra looked at each other with the same nervous expression. Just then the wall split to reveal Tenzin on the other side and he did not look happy when he saw Korra and Kamala.
"Oh uh.. hey Tenzin, nice to uh see you again." Kamala said nervously.
"Sorry we got a little side tracked on our way to see you." Korra said hoping to smooth things over.
Tenzin took a deep sigh before he turned his attention to the chief of police. "Lin, you are looking radiant as usual." He said trying to make friendly conversation.
"Cut the garbage, Tenzin." Lin said a little aggressively. "Why is the Avatar in Republic City? I thought you were supposed to be moving down to the South Pole to train her?"
"My relocation has been delayed." Tenzin said in a serious tone before turning his attention to the girls. "The Avatar and her friend on the other hand, will be heading back to the South Pole immediately, where they will stay put."
"What?" Kamala gasped in protest.
"But…" Korra then said but she was shot down.
"If you would be so kind as to drop the charges against Korra and Kamala I will take full responsibility for today's regrettable events and cover all the damages." Tenzin said to Lin without briefly glaring at the Avatar and polymorph.
Lin looked back at the two girls, and was considering Tenzin's offer. If she had her way she would have tossed them in a cell and threw away the key but that would put her in a difficult situation. So reluctantly.
"Fine." She waved her hand releasing the cuffs on Korra and Kamala as they rubbed their wrists she tossed Kamala's costume and mask to her. "Get them out of my city."
"Always a pleasure Lin." Tenzin said before he turned to Korra and Kamala. "Lets go girls."
The two walked past the chief before she gave an "I'm watching you." Finger gesture and Korra retuned one of her looked back for a brief moment.
"Uh chief one more thing." She said getting her attention. "This nut.. he wouldn't happen to have a hammer by any chance did he?"
Lin thought for a moment before she answered. "He did, what of it?"
"Oh uh no reason." Kamala said before she left the room. "Nice meeting you." She then left the room leaving Lin with a confused face.
"Huh kids." She said.
Soon Tenzin, Korra and Kamala were in the reception area waiting to collect their belongings. Korra and Kamala could see Tenzin still had a rather stone faced expression after bailing them out. Still Kamala was just glad it wasn't Bruce, her father or Natasha bailing her out of jail.
"Tenzin, please, don't send me back home." Korra spoke practically pleading not to get sent back to the south pole.
"Yeah same for me, you must have a conscience somewhere." Kamala agreed.
However Tenzin didn't have one right now. "You both blatantly disobeyed my wishes and the orders of the White Lotus."
"Katara agreed with me that I should come and to bring Kamala too." Korra explained. "She said my destiny is in Republic City and maybe Kamala could help me."
"Don't bring my mother into this!" Tenzin said calmly but his face had already turned red.
Kamala couldn't help but snicker. But sadly she was shot down by a rather ticked off look by Tenzin. Kamala cleared her throat before she spoke.
"Uh listen Tenzin, I know you and the White Lotus are trying to help Korra but keeping her isolated in a prison won't help her be the Avatar the city needs." Kamala explained. "Which is why she needs to be here to experience the outside world and learn."
"Right, I can't wait any longer to finish my training. Kamala and me saw a lot of the city today, and it's totally out of whack." Korra explained while Tenzin stroked his beard.
"I understand now why you need to stay. Republic City does need you. But it needs me and it may need Kamala too. She said she has friends her and wants to find them I want to help her." Korra then said.
Tenzin wanted to argue back with the two girls but he couldn't find the right words. They both had raised very valid points. Their discussion was interrupted by the sound of a cage door opening. The looked to see the officer holding Naga on a leash.
"Is this your polar bear dog miss?" The officer asked as Naga proceeded to lick his face. Kamala came over to see her.
"Oh are you okay Naga you super cute squish face." Kamala cooed and Naga replied with a lick to her face.
"Yeah cute." The Officer said in dismay.
Later:
Soon Tenzin, Kamala, Korra and Naga were onboard a boat sailing back to Air Temple island. Where a ship was waiting to take both girls back to the South was looking at the Avatar Aang memorial statue and was deep in thought. Just then as if on cue she was joined by Tenzin.
"I understand from my mother that your rather special Kamala." Tenzin said. "And I'm beginning to see why, after…the previous nights demonstration with my children."
The young Avenger was rather alerted by what Tenzin had said. "What?" She breathed.
"Before we left the south pole I saw you showing off your, unique bending to the children." Tenzin explained.
Kamala thought she was in trouble now. "Its alright my father has told me of many strange and unimaginable things that he's seen in his life. This would be no different." Tenzin said assuringly.
Kamala breathed a sigh of relief at that statement. "But how is it you are able to achieve such an ability if you don't mind my asking?" He then asked.
"Well, it's a long and rather complicated story." Kamala breathed a sigh.
"I'm sure I'll want to hear it as will the White Lotus Elders." Tenzin said.
Kamala gave a nervous laugh at that notion, but decided to change the topic. She looked back at Korra who was rather saddened that she would be returning soon.
"Tenzin, does she really have to go back?" She asked.
"I'm sorry but I cannot change what the White Lotus has decided. It's the only way to protect her." Tenzin sighed.
"I get that but…look even if you send us back she'll just come right back here again." Kamala said. "I may've only known Korra for a short time but she's stubborn."
Tenzin had to sigh in agreement. However there was something on his mind. "Why did you come with her, I would've thought you'd try to stop her?"
"Well." Kamala started. "I guess its because I know what its like to be sheltered away, and to hide my true self." She said looking at her hand remembering what happened after the Terrigen wave hit. "I had to leave and find my own way and I guess I could see Korra was the same way."
She then turned to the air bending master. "Look I don't mean to question you or the White Lotus's culture but… the more you try to deny someone their potential. The more they'll seek to find it elsewhere."
Tenzin took in all this young girl had said, though he didn't know her story he could see in her eyes she'd been through this before. His gaze looked up at the statue of his father and remembered even Aang had to leave to explore the outside world to become a better Avatar. And it resulted in meeting his mother and uncle. He looked back to Korra looking back at the city rather saddened as Naga slept. In the back of his mind he couldn't help but wonder if they were right.
Soon they had all arrived back at the island and were on the dock. Where a large ship with three White Lotus sentries were there waiting to take Korra and Kamala back to the South Pole. Korra sighed sadly and Kamala couldn't help but feel sorry for her as she looked back to Tenzin with a sympathetic look.
Just before they were about to leave three certain young Airbender kids flew in with their gliders. Apparently they'd heard that Korra and her new friend were here in the city.
They landed on the dock with Jinora carrying Meelo on her back. "Korra! Kamala!" They cheered as they hugged the two teenagers legs.
"Are you guys coming to live with us on the island?!"Ikki said excitedly.
However Korra could only look with disappointment. "No, I'm sorry, Ikki. We have to go home now."
The children whined in disappointment as Korra and Kamala went to Naga and they made their way to the ship. Tenzin couldn't help but look at them with a hint of compassion and remembered the young Avengers words.
As the three got closer to the ship Tenzin finally came to a decision. "Wait." They stopped and faced the air bending master.
"I have done my best to guide Republic City toward the dream my father had for it, but you're right. It has fallen out of balance since he passed." Tenzin explained as the White Lotus sentries approached. "I thought I should put off your training in order to uphold his legacy, but you are his legacy." He said putting his hand on Korra's shoulder.
What he said next they didn't expect. "You may stay and train airbending here with me. Republic City needs its Avatar once again."
Korra gasped in excitement at that as a massive grin appeared on her face. Kamala couldn't be more happier for her. "Yes thank you your the best!" However she remembered something. "Wait does this mean…"
"Yes as for Kamala she's partly the reason you are here at all, I can see that she maybe a companion for you in your time here." Tenzin then said. "Plus I imagine it would be impossible to separate the two of you now, so she will stay with us as well."
"WAHOOO!" Kamala cheered before she calmed down. "Uh I mean thank you Tenzin I won't let you down."
Before she knew it Korra pulled her and Tenzin into a hug and it wasn't before long before the children cheered at this news and joined in on the hug as well. Naga even joined in rubbing her head round Korra's back. Tenzin could see what he was getting himself into but none the less remains patient.
During the night Kamala explained her story to Tenzin how she was from a different world and of her friends The Avengers. Tenzin took a while to process all of this but he surprisingly believed her. So he decided during her stay they would do all they could to help her find her friends.
The following morning the City was full of life as outside the city hall press people, photographers heck the entire city was present. News of the Avatars arrival to the city had spread rather soon takes to the stage and up to the stand where four microphones were present. The young Avatar looked back to the back stage and saw Kamala giving her a supportive thumbs up. Korra cleared her throat.
"Uh hello." She spoke into the microphone which screeched a little. "I'm Korra, your new Avatar."
Just then questions began flooding in from reporters left and right. "Does this mean you've moved to Republic City?"
"Were you trying to send a message to the Triads yesterday?" Asked a female journalist.
"Who was your friend with the strange bending helping you?" Asked another reporter.
"Will you be fighting crime or the Anti-bending Revolution, or both?" Asked another reporter.
"Will you be working with Chief Beifong and the police?" Asked yet another reporter.
Kamala looked and saw that Chief Beifong was rather annoyed by that statement and she could see why. Tenzin was the most nervous of all.
Korra found it hard to process all those questions but tried to answer as best she could. "Uh ... yes, I am definitely here to stay, but honestly I - I don't exactly have a plan yet." She said. "See, I'm still in training, but, look, all I know is Avatar Aang meant for this city to be the center of peace and balance in the world, and I believe we can make his dream a reality." She said.
"And as for my friend well." Korra said. But then before she could answer Kamala walked on stage but this time in her Ms Marvel suit. "She's right here, and I believe she can help me in bringing balance to this city. So allow me to introduce. Ms Marvel."
The audience clapped and were rather surprised by the girls appearance most were chatting in the background.
"Uh hi I'm uh Ms Marvel." She said nervously. "I hope to serve alongside Avatar Korra in her mission, and while some of you maybe a little bewildered by my, special bending I am here to help and serve this city and your Avatar."
Korra stood beside her friend as she then addressed the crowds. "We look forward to serving you!" She said much to peoples cheering.
In the crowed was a certain individual who hid behind a grey trench coat and glasses. It was a woman and she smiled proudly. What people didn't know was her smile was directed to Ms Marvel.
Elsewhere:
Meanwhile in a secret location a secret group were listening to the morning announcement on the radio there were people in suits and masks with green goggles on their faces. One of them was a rather tall man with a long moustache on her face whilst he wore a mask with green and gold lenses and wore gold armour a greyish green suit and metal batons on his back.
"We're so happy to be here. Thank you, Republic City!" Korra said over the radio as people cheered.
"All right, that's all the questions the Av…" Tenzin's voice was cut off when the lieutenant switched off the radio.
"Amon, how do you want to handle this?" He said looking to his leader.
He was a man wearing a black battle suit attire with a hooded cape, red and grey armour. His face was covered with a kabuki mask with a rather haunting complexion.
"So, the Avatar has arrived looks like we'll have to accelerate our plans." Amon said turning to face his men.
Authors Notes: Whew! That was a long chapter but worth it in the end. So Kamala has now officially met Korra and has learned about the world she is now in, and likewise Korra has learned of her and the Avengers. Now this chapter ties in with the canon episode of Book 1. One of the reasons I had the Ms Marvel origin from the Avengers Ps4 game was because when I was planning this crossover I could see it flowed with the theme of the story. Which you'll see later down the line.
Now The Avatar and her new friend Ms Marvel had arrived in Republic city and who knows what trials await for them or who they may encounter in their mission to bring balance. Until the next chapter.
AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!
