He had been so confident. So arrogant. He'd said he was ready for anything, damn the consequences. He had the ability. He had the strength. He was intelligent. He was better than the rest of his so-called siblings. He had even stood up to his father and demanded to time travel. Spatial jumps were too childish for him at this stage. He was ready. Why couldn't his father see that? Why did his father insist it was too soon?
Because in reality, Five was foolish. Very foolish. He wasn't ready.
Five's gaze wandered around the destruction that surrounded him, the sheer devastation weighing heavily within his chest. Nothing was the way he had envisioned. The Academy was in ruins. His siblings were gone. There was nothing left.
Why? How had this happened? What could've caused the apocalypse?
Desperately, Five clenched his fists as he concentrated on his powers. He had to go back. He had to go back to his correct timeline. He had to warn the others. He had to let them know what he had seen of their future. There was still a chance to change everything. While cold and strict, his father would know what to do with the information. Sir Reginald Hargreeves had been training them for this very day, hadn't he?
When his powers refused to surface, flickering, unstable, Five could only stare with wide eyes and numbing realization.
He was stuck. He was stuck in an apocalyptic future.
He could no longer go home.

~A Few Days Later~
It took a while, but Five had managed to find a section of ruins that he could use as his base. It was open but easily defensible. It wasn't as though there were a lot of people wandering around. As far as he knew, he was the only one left in the city. He had yet to come across another living being, animal or human. He was truly alone. But he was determined to make it back to his original timeline. There was no way he was staying in a post-apocalypse world.
He had to save his family. No matter what.

It was while he was out exploring and trying to gather supplies that Five met her for the first time.
It was completely on accident – and completely unexpected. He was so shocked to cross paths with another human being that he froze and stared.
She was beautiful, he remembered thinking. With dark hair that matched a raven's wing, it fell down a slim back until it reached shapely hips. Her skin was pale and free of any blemishes despite the hot, harsh weather. She was petite, too, maybe only two inches taller than his current stature, but filled out with curves that made him blush. If he had to guess her age, he would estimate only a couple of years older than him.
What struck him the most, however, had been her eyes. They were amethyst and shined exactly like the gems they mimicked. He'd never met anyone with that eye color before, and it intrigued him. She intrigued him.
And when she smiled at him, albeit cautiously, Five knew his entire world had been turned upside down. Again.
Because in that moment, he was hit with the absolute knowledge and certainty that Kagome Higurashi was the one for him.
Fuck me, he vaguely thought.

~A Few Weeks Later~
Five was staring at the chalkboard like it had personally insulted him. His mind was buzzing with formulas and equations, his fingers tightening on the piece of chalk until the digits turned white with strain. He was trying to figure out a way to return home, but nothing was making any sense to his overworked brain. He was supposed to be a genius, but it seemed as though there were still some things he needed to study and learn.
It burned. He loathed the fact that his father had been right. He hated having to admit it, if only to himself.
"You should take a break, Five," Kagome's soft voice interrupted.
It had the necessary effect. Five sighed, placing the chalk down, and turned to face his companion. His eyes unknowingly softened as he gazed at the raven haired beauty. Although they hadn't known each other for very long, it felt like they had been together for years. They simply… clicked. She understood him on a level no one had before, and he appreciated it when she gave him space. He took comfort in her steady and warm personality. She was more than a companion. She was a true comrade.
The night after meeting for the first time, they had exchanged their life's stories. She was fascinated by his origins – how he and the others had been born – and how their father had formed The Umbrella Academy. Five had hidden nothing from her, because what was the point? In their current timeline, it didn't matter. It was all gone.
In return, Kagome revealed her own time traveling ability and adventures in the Warring States Era of Japan with her ragtag group of friends and allies. Five had been shocked to learn that there had been another who had a similar ability to his own. When she showed him the completed Shikon no Tama, his mind had buzzed with the possibilities. Could that be the key to their way backwards in time? Perhaps if he could work out the logistics…
Five was shaken from his thoughts when Kagome lightly patted his cheek to gain his attention. He blinked several times to clear the fog in his mind.
"I apologize, Kagome. Were you saying something?"
The raven haired beauty smiled gently. "It's okay, Five. I know you're working really hard to get back to your original timeline. I was just saying that lunch is ready."
"Ah, thank you. That… sounds nice." Foraging for food was hard but not impossible. Whatever force that had hit the Earth didn't completely destroy everything. They were still able to find lots of food and bottled water when they looked in the correct spots. "What are we having today?"
She smiled widely, pride beaming from her very expression. "Peanut butter and jelly pinwheels," she said.
"What?" He blinked.
In response, Kagome showed him the plate that held her latest creation. Their resources were a bit low at the moment, so she had made do with what they had. Wanting to be creative, especially with the small amount of bread they had, she had rolled the slices with peanut butter and jelly to form pinwheels with skewers to hold their shape. She had hoped the childish display would at least bring a smile to Five's face. The young man was too serious and grim. Sometimes he needed a reminder that he was only thirteen.
Five stared at the food, not saying a word. It made the raven haired beauty fidget, doubt starting to cloud her mind. When he finally looked up, blue clashing with purple, he spoke in his usual dry tone:
"What? We don't have any more mini marshmallows?"
Kagome laughed, the sound like tinkling bells.
And Five couldn't help the answering grin that spread across his features as he watched her enjoyment.

~Time Skip: Pre-Apocalypse~
"Well, shit."
He had done it. He had managed to jump back far enough in the timeline to potentially stop the apocalypse from occurring. Of course, it was still a few years too late – his siblings were now adults, and Ben was gone – but who was perfect? Five had accomplished what he had planned for decades. Things would be different. He was where he was supposed to be, though he didn't care for the thirteen-year-old body he was forced into, but he could save everyone.
He could stop the apocalypse. His siblings would survive.
Kagome…
Five paused. Where was Kagome? She was somewhere in the city. He could find her. He could warn her about what was to happen if he didn't succeed. He could still protect her.
He would be able to see her again.
Ignoring the voices of his siblings demanding answers, Five gave them an impatient huff. Rolling his eyes, he said, "I have somewhere more important I need to be," before disappearing in a spatial jump.

~Department Store~
Five appeared in the women's clothing department store, his blue eyes carefully taking in the surroundings. If he remembered correctly, Kagome had been working part-time in that location prior to the world going up in flames. He just needed to find her. He had to make sure she was okay.
"Excuse me," a sweet, oh-so-familiar voice caught his attention. Five whipped around to face the person who managed to sneak up behind him – and there she was.
She appeared exactly as he remembered from their first meeting so long ago. His eyes softened with affection. He shoved his hands into his pockets, suddenly feeling awkward and maybe a little shy. He supposed it was only natural. Although he was stuck in his thirteen-year-old body, he had a lifetime of memories of them and their relationship. And she was meeting him all over again for the first time.
"Hello, Kagome," he politely greeted, grinning boyishly.
Kagome immediately sensed that the young man in front of her was… different. His aura gave him away, though it was completely human. He was special. He didn't feel threatening either but that didn't mean her guard was lowered.
She smiled, cocking her head slightly to the side as she observed the newcomer. She had sensed his rather interesting entrance. She was curious. She hadn't come across anything or anyone remotely supernatural since her adventures to the Warring States Era had ended and she was trapped on her side of the Bone Eater's Well. "You know my name. You have me at a disadvantage." With one hand, she gestured towards the exit. "I just finished my shift. Would you like to go somewhere more private to talk…?"
"Ah, where are my manners? Everyone calls me Number Five. Just Five is fine."
"Alright. Would you like to go somewhere to talk, Five?"
"I'd love to, Kagome. We actually have much to discuss." Five started for the exit, but paused near a mannequin display. His head cocked curiously at one that was wearing a polka dot shirt. He offhandedly gestured towards it. "You should get her something new to wear. She likes sequins."
Kagome didn't bat an eyelash. "I'll be sure to let my co-worker know," she replied.
Five grinned. "Excellent. Now, who do I gotta kill to get a decent cup of coffee?"
"How about I make some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches instead?"
He chuckled. There was pure fondness in the sound, and it warmed something within her chest. "Could you shape them into pinwheels?"
An answering grin curved her lips upward. They fell into step with the other, like they had been doing it for years. "As long as you don't ask for mini marshmallows in it," she bargained.
"But those are the best part."
