The sound of the radio's fluctuate a bit as a young waitress turned on the frequency. Mayumi watched as the exhausted co-worker twisted the radio.
She herself doesn't very know how to operate one of those, these small metal boxes that seemingly produces sounds from nothing at all. Just by turning and pressing a few components on the box, one can get noise and music at a whim.
When the waitresses stopped, it was the news that was being broadcasted. Working here meant she can often receive updates about wars between the states. But the most focused one is obviously the never ending conflict between Jian Sun and Siaw Jong, two warring states right on Ba Sing Se's doorstep.
"Bzzz...Jian Sin forces have managed to push back the Siaw Jongs out of their territory at a great cost. With as many as thousands have lost their lives following the atrocities committed by invading ground troops. Fighting resumed as the Siaw Jong are preparing for a lengthy siege. Both sides are expected to be sending in fresh men and equipment..."
It seems that no matter how much defeat one of them inflicted upon the other, they both refuse to back down. The news have became so repetitive grim about this war that the battle simply does show a clear winner. The soldiers here would often talk about the conflict, how those two are spending too much effort on each other while bandit bands roam in nearby lands. As the leaderships are preoccupied on the war, it's natural those cutthroats to attack the vulnerable towns and villages of those states.
Some even ridiculed the warlords who instigated this senseless war, which have produced mountains of human casualties, and for what? So that they can secure a few inches of land which they will lose again? Soldiers here, especially the troops under the Judge himself only focused on fighting daofei armies that destabilized its borders. Unlike those two squabbling states, the campaigns against the bandits have been rather successful as of result of the city's numerical advantage. Well, mostly because the Judge himself likes to take little trips around the area to search for bandits, bring his own army of dangerously armed men, while collecting some weapons along the way...
The veterans eating here would often point out how tragic it is for young men to also fight in the conflict, and never to return to their families. They hoped that all those who listen would feel thankful that Ba Sing Se didn't embroil itself into a war with another state. But some customers were not so lenient. They mocked both Siaw Jong and Jian Sin. It is lucky that they are focused on each other rather planning to wage a war with the city. Ba Sing Se certainly enjoys a unique position in this conflict. Being the largest entity on the Earth Kingdom, it supports neither side. But if it were to choose to support one of them militarily, than the other one would certainly crumble under the alliance. But the people here are certainly not too keen to get too involved. Because everyone knows the war between Siaw Jong and Jian Sin is like a well, easy to jump in, almost impossible to get yourself out of it. If they get involved into the conflict, the other states around the Kingdom will also not say idle as the balance of power shifts.
But according to some customer conversations, there have been attempts to mediate between the two warlords. Diplomates from both sides would meet you n the upper ring, in presence of Ba Sing Se's most prominent figures. Yet, any progress amounts to little to no avail unfortunately...
Even so, it still doesn't stop people from trying to end the fruitless conflict. Many organizations are constantly trying to do their part, hoping their contribution can end the war. No matter the cost.
"Amongst the casualties are also two young air-nomads, who were performing peacekeeping duty in the region." The radio continued its grimace, even go on to detail how they were just teenagers. "They were mistakenly attacked by Jian Sin Earth Benders, so far, we have yet to receive any official statements from the state's administration. Meanwhile, the esteemed Master Tenzin will personally meet with the two's families, as well as discussing important issues with the Air nomad council."
Unlike the Kheshig airbenders, Tenzin's new Air Nation interact much more in the war torn Earth Kingdom. While the Khanate couldn't care less about the Earth Kingdom's political situation, the Air Nation flys around the continent, helping anyone in need. But unfortunately not even they are able to make any changes to stop the conflict. Warlords and military leaders don't just back down if you say nice things to them. Why would they cease this conflict just because a bunch of strangers asked them so? It is futile to negotiate or mediate between Siaw Jong and Jian Sin, and most people just accepted it.
Mayumi yawned and rubbed her eyes, mouth wide open as the last customer left the eatery's entrance. A guardsmen from Ba Sing Se's elite Terra team had an incredible appetite, he brought five special braised ducks, a famous staple of the city's cuisine. She has seen may restaurants in the city having their own version of Ba Sing Se roast ducks, using different species of ducks as well as different recipes. But she knew this eatery has managed to perfect this dish to a higher level, rising above many other restaurants and defeat plenty of competition. Many credit goes to Grandma Jin's own perseverance in balancing the correct amount of ingredients. The spice and the timing to roast the duck have been tested for decades, until the eatery have created their own secret recipe. Besides soldiers, there have been citizens traveling all the way from the upper ring, wearing their bright yellow and green dresses just to buy the dish. Wives of wealthy mean would travel here in their carriages. Servants would buy it for their masters. This restaurant has certainly found a unique attraction among the city.
There is a saying, that the people of Ba Sing Se ate like kings. While she knows that isn't true for every single person, customers here definitely fell into this the category. When you have massive farms and good weather that allows for two harvests, it's no wonder how the food culture here is more developed. She heard how this restaurant in the past even got hired to work in banquets of upper ring wealthy households, just to serve Jin's brazed ducks to all the attendees.
Now, the only thing missing is Jargal, who always claimed how he wanted to eat the famous roast ducks here. Who knows, maybe the hunter would barge right in and demand an order of fifty ducks just to fulfill his lifelong dream.
The girl in long brown hair stretched her spine, recovering herself from the backbreaking work she has put herself through. The eatery's owner Grandma Jin have allowed Mayumi to work in four hour shifts daily, which meant there is plenty of time for other activities. The public stage play will be held at night. Hopefully they can arrive early to secure some seats.
She and the other waitresses begin to tidy up the space, wiping the tables and cleaning the floors. Soldiers of Ba Sing Se can be rather troublesome eaters. They consumed plent of meat meat, often accidentally spill their bottles of wine. Just like many soldiers on any Earth Kingdom territory, they can rowdy at times. But at least in here, someone is always monitoring them...
"Ugh!" A barmaid became aghast as she cleaned a table. She uncovered a grave revelation, an earth shattering one. What she discovered will threaten their entire existence. "One of the customers hid a bone underneath the tablecloth!"
Another waitress also fumed, she looked at the tiny animal bone. Her faced almost vomit. "This...this is unacceptable!" She indignantly daunted. Both of them became enraged over this petty negligence. Many meat dishes of Grandma Jin's eatery have bones in it, customers without good manners would often choose convenience over the mental well-being of the staff. The Ba Sing Se roast duck especially have many bones. Once you have eaten the meat, people usually chuck the bone away, ended up in the bin. Animal bones are not waste back in her home. Even though majority of their food comes from the ocean, the few farmers in her village would still go around collecting fish bones to make fertilizers. For a small island like theirs, being resourceful is the natural order of things. Always eat your bowl of rice to the last grain, said their mother. Lick it clean if you have to.
Since no one wanted to get on their mother's more tenacious and easy to anger side, no one questioned her.
The barmaid swept the bone into the bin, frustrated by whoever that left it on the table the first place. "Hiding underneath the tablecloth, these guards have reached a new low!" She muttered, stomping her feet.
It's already tiring for these waitresses to be serving food for army of guards. Each day, she observed that there are hundreds who would visits this eatery, overwhelming the staff. She doesn't know how many soldiers are in Ba Sing Se, but it certainly is more than the other individual states. She remembered how soldiers would drown themselves in bottles of wine until they would snore loudly. Many of them have the face of sorrow painted on them. Just like Ganbaatar, they too shoulder unbearable weights accumulated from conflicts that have devastated their lives. Many stories around the tables, would detail the battles with daofei strongholds, about heroic deeds by individuals to save villages. But what haunted many soldiers may not necessarily be the battles itself.
By just seeing the faces of their fallen comrades and being in the presence of other people's suffering alone is enough to break your wits. She never experienced what they have on the same scale. Constantly stepping onto the battle can surely change a person. Kyoshi warriors like her don't often see too much conflict besides fighting some pirates with superficial ties with a certain cultist group.
While many soldiers of Ba Sing Se's army would come here to leisure. She would often notice a few lonesome men, isolating themselves in the corner, refusing to join the other customers. Their body language are withdrawn, almost frightened, as if anytime danger would just peak out of the ceiling and take their lives.
Experiencing losses is detrimental, and as a warrior, she may experience the same. She thought of their mother, who is considered the strongest Kyoshi warrior of her generation. The mother would emphasize how the weights people carry only makes them stronger. Whether of or not Mayumi understands such notion is something she must cultivate further. And whatever secret her mother hid from them only compels her to investigate more about the past. As there are many things Akahana and the other adults would hide from them. Many things she acknowledged to be better left unknown. Sometimes, being ignorant can be a bliss, other times not so. Now that she is in the city, she wanted to enjoy what simple things she has while looking after her sister, whom she considers more important than a mountain of gold. Even though she is just a dishwasher, an assistant to the cooks in this eatery, she is content with what she has.
As Mayumi dipped her mop in a water bucket and begin to clean the floors, Satchiko is the last remaining person in the dining room who is not a staff member. Hudie already left earlier to secure some seats at the stage play, leaving Satchiko the only one waiting for Mayumi.
Currently, the slumbering Kyoshi warrior is taking a big nap on a wooden chair. Her upper body is slumping on a table located at the far side of the room. Even though her unpainted face is buried in her arms, the snoring can still be heard from yards away, like a music instrument played by a novice.
Mayumi sister quietly mopped the floors, leaving no grounds unclean. As she finally completed her shift, she begin to walk over to gently wake Satchiko up.
"Sister, wake up." Mayumi whispered, gently squeezing Satchiko's trapezius muscle through the kimono.
"Huh? Oh, you are done." Satchiko rubbed her still sleepy eyes, feeling Mayumi's hand on her shoulder. Without knowing that the floor is wet, she jumped off the chair and immediately lost friction with the floor. The slippery surface was unforgiving, and she fell backwards, banging her bottom painfully. "Ouch!" She sharply hissed, trying to not cry in pain. It was a rather awful sensation, and it only got worse as she moved her legs. She cursed herself for being careless.
"Oh my, sister, are you alright?" Mayumi kneeled down immediately to Satchiko's level. All worried about the younger siblings wellbeing, she started to magnify every insignificant detail. Brushing the unorganized strands of brown hair and realigning those sleeves. She is acting like a worrisome aunt, seeing her favorite niece have superficial injuries. Even their real Aunt Ayuma isn't like this!
"I'm fine, thanks." Satchiko slowly climbed back up, using Mayumi's hands as support. After a round of sincere apologies from her overprotective sister, she finally recomposed herself. "You are sounding like Mum."
"At least one of us has to."
Satchiko laughed, amused by Mayumi's seriousness to the joke. "And at least one of us have to be the troublemaker, otherwise you wouldn't have a purpose."
They both shared a small moment of laughter.
"Wait," Satchiko looked around. "Where are all the customers?" She has been asleep for a long time, realizing she is the last person here who is not a staff.
"They already left," Mayumi explained. "I haven't asked you this, but what made you come here in the first place?"
"Just following those guys from the general Judge of Honghai!" Since that man refuse to tell her his real name, she will mock his title whenever possible. "They entered here, and just disappeared. You know where they are?"
The Judge of Honghai could have reveal his actual name and made the conversation less mouthful. But no, the so called legend just has to complicate the sentence.
"Oh, they went through the back door to look at a statue," replied Mayumi. Her sister has always been curious, acting first without thinking it through. Following behind soldiers can be viewed as an suspicious act. Which is she discouraged Satchiko from repeating this in the future. "By the way," Mayumi continued. "Those guys in metal armor came here whenever they got a new member. They would get the new recruit to visit the giant statue behind this eatery. They called themselves the Bingmayong."
The way she whispered that word unsettled Satchiko. It's as if Mayumi is revealing a forbidden secret. The waitresses in the room casted a few worried glance at them, but return to their duties afterwards.
According to Mayumi, most regular Ba Sing Se soldiers don't often associate with those who serve under the general. While the Judge of Honghai pretty much had a celebrity status as a legendary general, his troops have garnered a problematic reputation. Rumors circulates that the soldiers would behave like wild raging spirits as they invade a den of bandits. Members of the Terra team who worked with the Judge of Honghai would often describe his soldiers as well trained 'rabid dogs'. Daofei who are caught committing immoral acts against the populace were brutally slaughtered by those troops. So frightening were those men serving under the esteemed general, those deployed alongside the Bingmayong often requested to be replaced.
"That's..." Satchiko thought long and hard, unsure how to process this. "But they looked completely normal when we met them. Those guys in metal suits do look strong I will give that." And then, a thought hit her. "But, does that mean Liu would also become all scary and mean?"
It was a valid question. The Bingmayong must have been a frightening bunch to work alongside with. They even looked different from the usual soldiers in conical helmets. To make it even more unprecedented, they hired a firebender to be their second in command.
"Well, good thing they are not against us!" Mayumi joked. But there is truth in her words. If the Bingmayong very are as terrifying as the other soldiers would describe them, it is better that they used their tactics and training on bandit armies.
Their small bubble have been pierced by the voice of a shouting chef, who is holding many plates of food and placed them on the counter.
"Leftovers, come and get it!" Immediately after the chef placed the food on the table, waitresses begin to have a 'fight' over who gets the best ones. Since the chefs would often confuse some orders from customers, there are many food that have been mistakenly produced during rush hour.
Mayumi eyed some dumplings, freshly fried. If she can get some before the others, Satchiko would be able to taste some of it.
But she has competition. Right now the barmaid and seven other waitresses are dashing towards the counter, aiming to secure the best ones. Unfortunately for her, she is the furthest away.
"Stay here!" Mayumi instructed her baffled sister. Satchiko watched as the Kyoshi warrior turned dishwasher flipped over the table and bolted immediately to the counter. Mayumi spared no effort as she surpassed everyone, surmounting tables and chairs easily before arriving at her target. The acrobatic skills stunned everyone, even the barmaid who is the closest to the bar.
Mayumi hastily picked up a dozen of meat dumplings and put them in a paper bag. She left the remaining leftovers to her coworkers, who is grateful for the generosity.
Mayumi returned to Satchiko, chest raised and stood proudly by her accomplishment. All the Kyoshi warriors and their predecessors must be very proud that she has made full use of her training, to secure leftover food in a restaurant...
"What is this? It doesn't look like food at all." Satchiko asked, picking up the unfamiliar smell of fried meat. Mayumi handed a meat dumpling to her, and she held it carefully with two hands.
"It has meat in it, try it." Mayumi suggested. They both walked out of Grandma Jin's eatery, and Satchiko finally took a bite While the dumpling is small enough to fit into her giant mouth, she only bit off half in order to look at what is inside.
"Mmm! Not bad!" She happily said. She swallowed the whole dumpling, and Mayumi warned her to chew thoroughly before swallow. But Satchiko's mouth simply wanted more of this food. Whatever this is, she enjoyed it's crispy outer layer. But this dumpling is clearing different in many ways when compared to what the Kheshigs have. Through the white sheet of flour, there are meat and spring onions in it. The taste of the fried dumpling felt like reaping a reward after hard work. The fried outer skin is hard, but it only made the tender meat even more enjoyable as her teeth are sank into them. Without further hesitation, she devoured the rest of the dumpling.
"You look so cute whenever you eat," Mayumi complimented. This one simple line embarrassed Satchiko, who almost choked on her food.
Mayumi patted her back. "There, there baby sister, here have another one."
Satchiko gladly accepted another dumpling. While she doesn't enjoy Mayumi calling her a baby, the taste of the food balanced that out. As they walked, the sun begin to dusk, as if it is announcing itself and everyone that labor is over for now.
Both of them walked side by side, heading towards the apartment Mayumi rented. Based on her description, it's just a simple room on the fifth floor, even smaller than their humble wooden lodges.
The silence between them is deafening. Clearly, there is something the younger sister wants to tell Mayumi. After Satchiko finally finished her second dumpling, she remarked the ingredients used. "I think this is the first time I have eaten land meat that is prepared in a way that I don't even recognize what it is."
Land meat, she said those words like she is missing out on something major. But they have already tasted meat when they are with the Kheshig. Maybe it's because the cuisine here in the city is much more refined. For the Kheshig's nomadic lifestyle meant certain ingredients don't often make it on the table. Meat alone tastes good. But without other ingredients such as spice, sauce and certain herbs meant the taste is quite generic. The meat within the dumplings have more, there are a variety of other vegetables such as carrots and cabbages. Simple, yet it accompanied the meat inside like a symphony. When everything mixed together, one can experience a very unique taste.
Folks on Kyoshi island do not have access to meat from farm animals. Fish is the primary source of their nourishment, being plentiful and accessible to the locals. It is accompanied by the farmers who produce rice and wheat, used to make her favorite deserts and pastries.
But meat from land animals has always been scarce. Either one can obtain them from hunting in the dense forests, or buy them from traders who interact with the outside world. Both options are much more difficult and unnecessary when compared to the bountiful fish one can catch from the ocean. Why should they waste their time farming plants and animals, when schools of salmons are swimming right next to their homes? As long as there are fish in their traditional fishing grounds, famine will always be events they read in books and scrolls.
"Is there something you wish to tell me sister?" Mayumi said. She wanted Satchiko to be honest, whatever internal struggle she is dealing with, it's better to face it together.
It took a while for Satchiko to reveal her problem. "Mayumi, I'm so sorry." Those words very caught the older sister off guard. They both stopped infront of the apartment building entrance.
Mayumi blinked. "What? What are you sorry for?"
"You were never meant to be scrapping plates on some restaurant, if it wasn't for me, you would have been the one studying in the university. That letter from Master Xuan Zang would have been better if it chose you as a student. I robbed you of this opportunity."
Mayumi felt compelled to say something to comfort Satchiko. But she cannot accomplished that without knowing the source of her sister's guilt. "Where did you get that idea?" She demanded. "Why are you being like this? You stole nothing from me little sister." It didn't work, for Satchiko is beginning to act even more out of character. An insecure teen who doesn't know where to place herself, closed her fist entirely and held them close together.
But without warning, Satchiko suddenly hold onto Mayumims hands, squeezing it gently. She begins to act like a little child, something Mayumi have noticed occasionally during the travels. "If I can choose, I wish I can gave my spot in the university to you. Let's face it, between the two of us, you are much better suited for learning. You deserve it more than me."
"You are overthinking things, again? You must have studied very hard, don't worry, I know how there are times in life when you want to give up. But you need to remember, you have taken nothing from me. In fact, you being yourself is the greatest gift I can have!" She then gently clasped Satchiko's cheeks, squeezing it. It makes Satchiko look like some kind of doll made of wool. "Sometimes, you are worrying about things that doesn't matter. And that is unhealthy. You are doing nothing wrong."
"You very think so?" Satchiko's voice became distorted, like a spirit. Mayumi let go of those cheeks to allow her sister to talk normally. "Thanks...it's just looking at you, working so hard makes me feel I don't deserve what I have. We came all the way here just so that I can learn Earth bending. But I..."
Mayumi caressed Satchiko hair, which she has done more in recent times. "There are many things you can tell me, don't be ashamed to hide it."
Satchiko only nodded, still concealing her educational struggles in the university. Perhaps all she needed to do is try harder in her lessons, and eventually she will understand the written aspects of Earthbending. Writing poems and remembering words on books are much more preferable than cleaning dirty plates in some restaurant. She mustn't be ungrateful, she can't bring herself to tell Mayumi everything.
"Come on, I will show you the place I live," said Mayumi, climbing up the stairs that lead into a moderate sized building with a pointy green roof.
"Coming," Satchiko trailed her after her sister. They both ventured into an apartment complex built entirely out of stone. The stairs did made her tired a bit, after all she has just exhaust her energy stopping the fight between the two students.
Mayumi pulled a key out from her kimono and unlocked the door to her apartment. The entire space was pitch dark, which prompted Mayumi to enter first and secure the perimeter.
"Let me see where is it..." Mayumi reached for what appears to be a closet near the entrance. She pulled it open and retrieved a few matchsticks. After walking around the room, she lit up some oil lamps, thereby brightening the room so that Satchiko can walk in without tripping.
The apartment is a one singular square unit, larger than her dorm room but certainly smaller than their wooden lodges. A cooking station is installed on the left side of the room, containing a giant metal wok and a stack of bamboo steamers.
She walked over, trying to feel the metal surface of the round bottom cooking pot. When she tries to lift it up with only one hand, she find it rather heavy and decided to gave up on that idea. But it's the bamboo steamers that truly drew her attention. She has seen Saran using this strange wooden contraption, putting food in each level and they all cook simultaneously. Her mother usually only have one clay pot when preparing meals, but the bamboo steamers appears to be capable of heating multiple dishes simultaneously.
Mayumi showed Satchiko how the steamer works. She removed the top lid and dismantled each level, which have small holes that enables steam to travel upwards. The mechanism is simple enough. Place boiling water on the first level and heat it, the steam would float upwards, ventilating all the food at the same time.
"You know sister, when we return to Kyoshi island, I might bring both this pot and the steamers back with me." Mayumi smiled as she stacked the steamers again. "Who knows, they might be useful!"
"I don't know Mayumi," Satchiko re-examined both the wok and the steamers. "Our house's kitchen don't appear compatible."
Usual households on Kyoshi island incorporated kitchens where the pot is dangling from the ceiling, usually by a rope or metal chain. The food inside the pot would be heated over a small campfire in the middle of the house. Her mother would use the technique to cook stew and stew. Other dishes like citatap also does not require such a large metal pot.
But seeing how woks and bamboo steamers are meant to be used by people of Ba Sing Se, she is skeptical as to how Mayumi can replicate the same on Kyoshi island without proper kitchen setup.
She then shifted her face to the right side of the room. There stood Mayumi's Kyoshi warrior armor, alongside her crossed shaped triangular plated headdress as well as her katana. Her sister is a Kyoshi warrior, proud and respected, having her working as a dishwasher and live in a rundown apartment is simply unacceptable in her eyes. If it wasn't for their trip here, her sister certainly wouldn't be in such difficult position.
"Well, I haven't been keeping the armor clean these days." Mayumi blew the dust off the empty armor, and then proceeded to polish it with a piece of cloth. Her sword and lacquered suit just sat here for a few weeks without seeing any action. Lack of protection is certainly a risk should she be attacked. But what confused Satchiko is where are Mayumi's other equipment, for there is clearly more.
Without warning, she quickly tugged Mayumi's dress, sensing a few dozen throwing knives and two war fans hiding underneath. After confirming that her sister have not neglected safety, she was then met with Mayumi's disapproval gaze. "Don't do this to others in public, they will not be as forgiving as I." It was certainly a rude gesture as to what Satchiko did. Randomly pulling someone's clothing would definitely raise suspicion. Perhaps in the field of manners and public etiquette, the young Kyoshi warrior still has a lot to learn.
"Oops, sorry." Satchiko smiled awkwardly, quickly retrieving her hands before her sister is actually offended. "By the way Mayumi, just how many weapons do you even have?" Satchiko gave Mayumi a weird look, wondering why the projectiles haven't run out yet. Mayumi employed plenty of throwable knives and shurikens in her disposable. And since she threw many of them on their journey, it's amazing how the supplies haven't depleted.
"Oh, I still got a lot," Mayumi said casually, dropping her narrowed eyes. "Haven't find a weapon resupplier yet but with the amount I still have should be sufficient for one more fight." The answer was plain and simple, not elaborating specifically on how much projectiles she still have. Even as her own sister, Satchiko is baffled by how Mayumi never runs out of things to throw at the enemy.
The inspection continued as Satchiko looked past the dusty wooden walls. She arrived at the window, which is about the size of a large table. But the visibility to the street outside was completely compromised by a lone tree. It's thick wooden branches and dense dry leaves blocked the view entirely, leaving no place for the resident to view the outside.
"Well, this place is quite cheap, even though it has its own drawbacks. At least the trees can provide some covering!" Mayumi commented. Although for her standards, she isn't asking too much for an accommodation. She is the sole tenant, which is why this small apartment is more than enough. The rent here is very affordable. While it did came at the expense of bad window visibility and lighting, she will not be living here long term anyway.
"This place you live in, I can't believe you have to live like this." Satchiko leaned on the window, looking at a file of ants crawling on the branches. "You are working so hard, yet you got so little in return. This place doesn't even resemble a home."
The cracks on the room's walls and the creaky floors have now become even more apparent as she observed her surroundings in more detail. The landlady must have not been keeping the place in good maintenance, which completely justifies the affordability of the lower rent. Just like the industrious ants outside, they worked so hard yet the reward is seen as unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
"Sister, just because I live in such a small and ugly apartment doesn't mean you should feel bad about it." Mayumi put a hand on Satchiko's temple, smoothing it. "This isn't about me, this is about you. I don't care what condition I live in as long as you can achieve what you want, mastering Earth bending."
'Want' may not be the correct word, Satchiko's own conscience cannot shamelessly claim that her will to learn bending committed her full aspirations. But she does want to make her parents proud, especially her mum, who desire her to unravel her untouched potential of bending. The young Kyoshi already have been delayed for many years, but can she very expect her hands to just magically move rocks larger than a pebble?
She stared downwards as her two hands. Moving her fingers, she thought about how she would wield a war fan or a sword. But earth has always felt stubborn and nonexistent to her. For all her life she has only used earth bending for one thing, moving pebbles. And she never even used them for purposeful activities. The only 'technique' she ever performed is rotating two pebbles in her palms when she is bored. That is pitiful.
"Sometimes," Mayumi clasped her hands with Satchiko's cheeks, playfully pinching them. "You seek the encouragement of others, yet you don't even believe in yourself. I know you can learn it, you just need to give bending a try."
It felt weird how her non-bending sister is giving her this piece of advice. Sometimes she asked herself, did Mayumi even felt jealousy of being born a non-bender? Kyoshi warriors are always non-benders. But even without the use of elements, they can still be strong with their exceptional training in the ways of war fans and stealth. So useful in fact, that they can fight fire bending pirates effectively.
Yet, sometimes she felt Mayumi deserved more. If her sister was gifted with the ability to move Earth, maybe she would have mastered it already. Unlike her incompetency, her older sister probably would have been throwing giant chunks of earth without a teacher.
Mayumi pulled out an umbrella from the closet, opening it so that her sister can have a look. Closely, Satchiko noticed the image of mountain and a river on the still closed oil paper umbrella. The craftsmanship is adorning, not even the best umbrella makers back on Kyoshi island can compete.
"Woah, where did you get this thing?" She walked closer to Mayumi, who opened the umbrella. "It looks very expensive..." She would never fathom the idea that Mayumi have actually brought this thing. Kyoshi warriors never had much. Yet they still maintained a certain minimalism on their belongings. Excess is a trait often looked down upon back home. As the oldest girl in their village, Mayumi lead by that example well.
Mayumi smiled. "Well, it was given by someone on the day we came here. It was very rainy and he decided to just give it to me." She then spun the umbrella to a different angle, allowing Satchiko to see the interior wooden stretchers. The wood are naturally red, which according to some locals, is an exquisite material used to craft fine furnitures.
Satchiko noticed Mayumi's face baring a content smile, and lip curved ever wider. But this particular expression is something Mayumi displayed for the first time. She has saw others having the same reaction before, and she is not totally clueless on what this is.
Her sister is blushing, very lightly.
Satchiko smirked, she will not let this opportunity slide. Finally, she has the upper hand in this round. "Ah ha!" She yelled, pointing sharply at Mayumi. "A boy gave you this haven't you? Now spill it, how many dates have you two been on? I told you that Aunt Meng's fortunetelling is nonsense, because I don't see any purple flowers in this room!"
She quickly scanned the room for a vase. There is none, which reaffirmed her resolve. The foolish idea that fortunetelling can inform you who you will fall in love in is a ridiculous notion she shall debunk. Finally, the 'purple flower' phenomenon has been disproven.
Mayumi quickly dropped her blush, realizing she has shown it. "Well it's not what you think sister," she calmly replied, much to Satchiko's dismay. It seems that Mayumi's quickly to adapt attitude not only applies to fighting. Her level headed nature is also useful in pointless talks. "This umbrella is simply a gift between strangers. We never met each other since then. He is just some student partaking in that Keju exam, nothing too out of the ordinary."
"Oh," Satchiko dropped her hands and extinguished the excited tone, realizing she may have jumped to conclusion a bit too fast. "Did you at least got his name?"
Mayumi head shake is another plummet in Satchiko's hopes. Very disappointing. Well, at least it's not something major. Mayumi isn't hurried about finding a partner a way. Her sister already emphasized the importance to complete the Earth bending study. Everything else is only secondary.
"Well then, better bring this with us just in case it rains again. Hudie have secured seats for us, let us not make her wait." Mayumi closed her umbrella and opened the doors again. Upon exiting, they headed straight for the location of the stage play. The sun have already fallen behind the mighty walls of Ba Sing Se. Due to the height of the grand bastion, the people in the lower ring enjoys less sunlight when compared to the upper class. They are being reminded that the lower ring do not enjoy the luxury of being beautiful, yet the builders still did their best when working with what little space they have. The buildings crammed together does have its own unique taste to it, so long as there is a fine balance between available living space and the natural environment.

The two girls in green kimono are somewhere near the market, at a location next to the wall. Hudie specifically instructed them to go to a place called Xilou, and they found it by following trails of people who are also going to the play.
It probably is just a ten minute walk from Grandma Jin's benevolent eatery. Here, they found a square stage entirely built in the style of a temple. Lined with fine stone and carved by skilled artesians, it is clearly important to the residents of the lower ring. If there is anything that can brighten up the dull life behind these walls, is an entertaining show played by a troupe. Nothing trumps the enthusiasm towards operas here, not even the wars that ravaged the outside world.
The stage itself is built against the base of the giant wall. All around are old and abandoned cottages, which will eventually be repaired. For now, they serve as a reminder of the past, and a history they don't wish to remember.
There is a flat ground in front of the stage. Wooden chairs closest to the platform are reserved for the musicians, and the rest are given to the audiences. Since the lower ring's population is numerous, there is no way there is enough seats for everyone. Which is why many opted for standing, sitting on the ground or the stairs to those abandoned buildings. The last option may prove to be risky, as who knows whether if the structure would collapse without warning.
"Wow, this place is already full?" Satchiko said. She ate another piece of fried dumpling as both her and Mayumi struggled to find an empty seat. In the whole ocean of audiences, not a single chair is vacant.
"Look, there is Hudie." Mayumi directed Satchiko to where the Miao girl is sitting. There is actually two empty seats next to her. Hudie was smart enough to use her silver headdress and her outer garb to occupy both seats, just so that the Kyoshi warriors can use them. She then waved at them, telling them to come quick. And they eagerly did so.
"Wait stop," Mayumi halted her, much to Satchiko's dismay.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
They both noticed two elders walking slowly to Hudie. While they couldn't hear what they are talking about, she knew it's about inquiring whether or not the seats are already taken. Hudie secretly glanced at them, unsure how to handle the delicate situation.
Hudie can just simply tell the two elders that the seats are reserved for her friends, and that they should find another place to sit. But is doing something like this very unacceptable for their conscience.
Mayumi, being the oldest one out of the three decided to take charge. She waved her hands dismissively, and then lead Satchiko away from where Hudie is sitting.
The Miao have a sympathetic look, but also one filled with a degree of understanding. The Kyoshi warriors gave up their seats anyway, so she obligated by allowing the two elders to sit next to her.
"Oh thank you so much young lady!" One of them said. "These old bones are getting all whiny from all that walk, thank goodness we managed to find chairs!" They rested their walking staff and sat on the seats, grateful for what is given.
Hudie smiled, putting her headdress back on. When she looked at where the Kyoshi warriors once were, she is disappointed that they were no longer there.
...
"So um, what are we going to do?" Satchiko wondered. They gave up their seats, but now they don't even have anywhere to sit. Respecting the elderly is the moral obligation they must adhere to, but they were never taught how to find a spot to sit down when a stage play is beginning.
"There, on top of that roof." Mayumi said, indicating they should climb onto an old cottage to get a good vantage point. If they sit on the roof, they would be able to get a clear view of the play. But there is a risk, as the buildings around here are very old and abandoned. There is no telling which ones are sturdy enough to handle additional weight.
Mayumi found a stone house, which the building condition is still rather stable. Since it's just one story high, they can easily climb onto the walls with their training alone.
"Alright sister, we going to do that thing we practiced." Mayumi said confidently.
"Which maneuver you are talking about?" Satchiko scratched her forehead cluelessly. But looking at the side of the stone brick house, she realized what Mayumi was talking about. Since there is no inanimate objects for them to jump onto the buildings directly, they will have to use each other to get up there.
Mayumi strapped the umbrella and the bag of dumplings on her kimono. Without saying anything, she ran straight to walls and pressed her back against it. There is no need for any more communication as Satchiko now runs at full speed towards Mayumi.
She stepped onto her sister's hands and used it as a platform. Working together, Satchiko is flung upwards, grasping her hands on the roof. She then threw down her arms and begin to pull Mayumi upwards.
It took a great deal of force, as her older sister is heavy. Using strength is not part of their fighting style, which is why it did took Satchiko to expend more energy just get her sister up.
"Finally!" She used the last bit of force. They both sat down. Mayumi pulled out the bag of dumplings and gave one to her.
"That's a lot of effort, just to find a spot to sit." Satchiko said as she bite a dumpling, before quietly squealing again, savoring the taste. Grandma Jin must have been a great business owner. She promised herself to revisit there when possible.
"It definitely is," Mayumi sighed as she too took a bite out of a dumpling, a much smaller and controlled bite. "But this place is good. We can see the whole show from here. Now that I think about it, the last time I ever watched a performing troupe was when I visited Chin village. I actually enjoyed it. It must have been very stressing that you are studying in the university. I can only imagine how much books you have to read and how much words you have to write, you deserve some fun."
Satchiko stilled, contemplating at everything Mayumi just said. She wished she has the resolve to tell her sister how many struggles there is. From writing lengthy essays and mind boggling poetry with her limited vocabulary, as well as memorizing a whole mountain of historical information. But she can't, not after she saw how pleased Mayumi looked when being lied to.
She gripped her fist a bit, which didn't go unnoticed. Once she caught Mayumi's tracing eyes, she quickly stopped, and sharply pointed at the stage. "The show, it's starting!"
Mayumi believed her. The audiences below also clapped as they watched the musicians arrived and occupied their own seats. Bringing with them are various instruments, such as a jinghu fiddle, bamboo flute, and some drums. Judging their clothing and age, it is clear they are seasoned musicians who have played for troupes for a long time.
Satchiko then noticed an announcer on the stage. Walking out of the curtains, he stated the troupe's name and the story that will be played tonight.
"My fellow countrymen!" He waved and smiled brightly. "Tonight, we will experience the magical performance brought to you by Ba Sing Se's famous troupe, none then than the Blooming Lotus troupe!"
Everyone cheered loudly, but their excitement gradually calmed as the curtains slowly lifted apart, revealing the stage.
Satchiko swallowed a piece of dumpling, she and Mayumi glued their eyes to the stage as a scenery of some generic landscape appeared. The musicians begin their music. The sound is louder and vibrant, with fast beats. Compared to the more quieter musicians back home, for her this certainly is a new way to experience music.
While people like her sister tend to prefer the more elegant and timid sound of the stringed fiddle called Shamisen. Satchiko is much more gravitated towards the more energetic music played by those opera musicians. There are many differences between the two of them, and the taste of music is also one.
The music fastened as to announce the arrival of twelve actors, who quickly entered into the stage. Six arriving from the left and another six from the right. All carried prop weapons. When they positioned themselves on the stage, the music stopped, creating a quiet environment for dialogue.
They all look very similar to real soldier in armors, but with more decorative ornaments. But their face paints are even more eye-catching. Each face has three colors, all arranged to depict the actors' expression as though they are in rage. Whoever painted their faces must have been an artist, as each of the actors' face looked difficult to replicate. The complicated brush strokes and the exceedingly elaborate style clearly took more effort than regular Kyoshi warrior war paint.
The two camp of actors stood silently, brandishing spears and expressed hostile body languages, which likely explain that the two sides are enemies, just like Siaw Jong and Jian Sin. Their silence is finally broken when one of the leaders spoke. His words are unlike normal conversations. The tone is more exaggerated, imbued with emotions. He sounded imposing, likely due to his long beard which came with his elaborate robed costume.
"Our two villages have been warring for many years my old foe, since we were still in the springtime of our youth, my people have been fighting for what is just!" The leader on the left proclaimed pridefully in a deep middle aged voice. His clothing is a long black robe, adorned with three flags attached to the back. His facial makeup pattern is composed of black color, mixed with some white. "Your treachery and betrayal shall be your own misfortune!"
"Ha!" The person on the right replied in an equally deep tone. He stroked his beard, down casting his opponent. "Jing, those are the words spoken by a badgermole, ever so blind to the reality. The Earth spirits will know that it our village who stood in righteousness!"
The musicians suddenly increased the paste of the music. The sound of the drums can be heard as both sides entered into battle. The choreography between the warriors individual duels are all perfectly synchronized in both movements and style. They performed flips, rolls and dodging away from the weapon's stab with ease. It's a surprise that they are mere actors and not real soldiers on the battlefield.
"It's like...it like they are dancing..." Satchiko have never seen such interesting performances. The whole stage is like an image taken out of a story book. Those people on the stage clearly know what they are doing, keeping the action interesting while supported by musician's rigorous playing.
"They rehearsed well," Mayumi added. "I must say, this play is even better than the one I saw in Chin village."
Although relationships between Kyoshi island and Chin village have improved because of Avatar Aang's action, there are still certain issues that act as a wedge in their so called peace. The most serious issue is definitely on the controversial portrayals of Chin, who is both the conqueror and the great. The opera house in their town even featured his tales of his glorious achievements and military campaigns, with obviously are filled with over exaggeration and embellishments. They even depicted Chin the great brutally killed by Avatar Kyoshi, which...is correct.
But the story being displayed right now felt original, a simple folklore of mainland Earth Kingdom that everyone can enjoy regardless of affiliations.
The two opposing leaders then clashed with their jian, entering what appears to be a duel between two great military commanders. The flags attached to their backs waved as they moved in circular moved in circular motion around the stage.
"The thief may be strong, but his resolve wavers!" The performer from the right yelled, parrying a strike before riposting it. The main combatant on the left lost his sword, and is at the mercy of his foe.
"I may have lost this fight," the man's forceful voice bellowed. "But my children will continue this war until our village triumphs!" His opponent prepared to slash the sword at him, but then suddenly, the musicians changed the pace and tone of the music. It went from a moderately rate tone and transformed into a speedy yet somehow graceful sound.
She entered as speedy as the winds, but as furious as fire. Her face is as gentle as water, but her will is as strong as earth. The repeating sound of clanking and instruments announced her abrupt arrival. The young female warrior blocked the blow of her enemy with a spear, then proceeded to rescue the military leader of the left.
"Wait-wait..." Satchiko's eye widened in shock, pointing her trembling fingers at the actress that just entered. "Her face paint, it looks just like ours!"
The woman on stage has a strikingly similar face paint pattern. The only difference Satchiko can notice is that the color red around the eyes are lighter. "And the clothes, it looks so beautiful!" Satchiko further elaborated on the eye catching costume. Whoever this actress is, she dressed herself in a finery silk robe and wears a decorated headdress with a lot of green pompons. The reaction of all the players on stage shows that this woman is clearly a protagonist.
"Villain, let go of my father!" She cried loudly, crashing her spear with the foe's sword. Her opponent is surprised by this intrusion, and she utilized this opportunity to strike him a critical blow.
"Retreat! Fall back to the village!" The leader cried. His followers went after him, scurrying back to the right until they are out of the audience's view. The young warrior woman, now satisfied that safety has been secured, hurried over to her leader.
"Father, you are hurt!" She said, placing her hand on the leader's arm, face filled with emotional concerns. "Everyone, escort him back to our village!"
Jing reassured her daughter, informing her that they must continue the battle. "Oma, now is not the time to be concerned about triviality." He said, aiming to inspire the troops. "The enemy is on the retreat, and our reinforcements will be here soon. It is only a matter of time until our nemesis be wiped out from the face of this earth!" He bellowed, but his expression turned soother when he turned back to the woman in green. "But until then, I am sending you to a scouting mission. You must seek out the enemy and unravel every weakness and secret they have! And remember this, it is they who killed your mother! I can trust no one else for this important task but you. I know you will not fail me."
Oma bowed, accepting Jing's orders. She always dreamt of the day when her village can triumph over evil. As long as her father lead the forces to crush the enemy's village, her life long dream will be fulfilled.
The musicians played an exit music. The actors left the stage, with Oma alone pursuing the retreated enemies. She danced her way to the right, and disappeared entirely. The curtains slowly closed as the audience clapped loudly at the opening sequence. Very sudden and simple to understand. The premise is about two warring village fighting for supremacy. With the countless civil wars between various Earth Kingdom states raging outside their walls, this play have meant something new entirely to the people.
"That was Oma?" Satchiko sat there, pondering everything that just occurred. "I must say, her black hair is pretty long. But did you saw her makeup?" Satchiko nagged Mayumi, who is trying to finish a dumpling. "I didn't know there are other people who copy our face paint."
Mayumi added to the discussion. "Actually, many troupes around the Earth Kingdom have that face pattern." She was met with Satchiko's astonished look. Her younger sister clearly does not know much about the outside world as her. The Kyoshi warrior's trademark war paint found its origins in stage entertainers, but it also have a more malevolent connection. While the exact history have been a bit foggy, even possibly altered, there is no denying that their intimidating war paints are borrowed from stage performers. There is a sense of elegance to this. It's as if the Kyoshi warriors themselves are also performers, gracing their enemies with beauty before defeating them using those glinting metal fans. It's as if the battlefield they stood on is a stage, and their fighting style is equal to dancers.
"Let me guess, you know this from dad's books, again..."
"Well, yes." Mayumi replied. But what she doesn't know is that this harmless little interaction reinforced Satchiko's inadequacy towards her own cognitive skills. People on their village often differentiate them as either the smarter one or the more impulsive one. The more well mannered one, and the more troublemaker.
While these difference never very mattered for a Kyoshi warrior. For Satchiko, not sharing her sister's intelligence is a huge drawback. She never have the affinity to study, something that was never looked down upon in her home. But in here, Ba Sing Se university is not as forgiving. The classrooms are strict and dull, keeping up with the grind alone is already like scaling up a steep mountain.
"Let's just focus on the play..." Satchiko responded with a lack of energy. It prompted Mayumi to glance at her, thinking something is wrong.
Satchiko curled her arms and legs into a stiff ball, and averted her sister's worried gaze. Luckily, the stage curtains lifted before Mayumi can ask anything personal.
The scene is now on a giant mountain, with a lone tree planted in the middle of the top. They watched as a male actor, dressed in a light blue robe walked to the peak.
Satchiko remembered this person, he is on the advertising poster Hudie has. If her memory of the story is correct, than this person must be...
The man with a top knot sighed tiredly, revealing a frustrated tone. He doesn't appear to be a warrior, but more like a regular civilian. The dialogue is sung, alongside the musicians who produced a pleasant but also sad tone. "The world's pain knows no bound," he said. "Like morning dew, one can expect all to be taken from them." He lamented, walking towards the tree and stood beneath a beach. He then plucked one of the leaves, and then threw it to the ground aimlessly.
"I think that is Shu," Satchiko whispered quietly. She was then met with nod, and Mayumi gave her another dumpling as though it is a reward for the correct guess.
The music hastened, changed into a familiar entrance tone. Oma slowly entered from the left, and Shu turned around to meet her.
"Who are you?" Shu asked, trying to be as calm as possible. It's clear the man is a bit intimidated, but refusing to back away from the tree. Oma has a spear in her hands, which could signify many things.
Oma, clearly naive about the identity of the man, answered honestly. "My name is Oma and just who might you be?"
"Shu."
She slowly walked to the tree, spear pointing away from the man. By comparing the makeup of the two, Satchiko can tell their patterns are similar. It seems that the younger characters of this play have the makeup pattern similar to Kyoshi warriors, and those with more elaborate and snarled face paints belong to imposing and authoritative figures.
After a long conversation between Oma and Shu, a revelation was revealed. Despite their fated meeting here, the truth is still hard to process."
"You are from the village of my enemy. I should be killing you. We have been war with one another, and I am talking with you right now. Yet I do not feel your aura to be a threat." Oma is conflicted. For the first time, she met an enemy who does not wield a sword. She dropped her spear and picked up a stick branch with pink flowers.
Shu's left hand is placed onto the tree. He waited until Oma walked closer to him. "War brings strangers who does not know each other into conflict. I resent such reality, but I don't want the same for us." He offered his hand to Oma, hoping she can take it. "If you wish to kill me, then so be it. But I want to know, is peace very not possible? Are we humans truly as evil as the spirits called us to be?"
Satchiko isn't sure what is exactly going on. The fierce warrior Oma accepted Shu, seemingly grossly over the fact her mother was killed by the people on Shu's side. But judging by her sister's expression, she knew Mayumi have a much deeper understanding on the themes and the subtle message in this moment.
The scene closes as the curtains slowly concealed the stage, the last thing they saw was Oma and Shu standing together on the mountain that divided their village.
While she does felt the pacing of the romance is a bit quick, it's acceptable. Since she and everyone knew the two of them will fall in love eventually, there very isn't that much surprise for their character development. The director must have already anticipate the audience's familiarity with the plot, so he or she chose to cut some sections and focus on more important story narrative.
"Well, that was quite dramatic." Satchiko said. But Mayumi disagreed a bit, she find the idea of two enemies falling love is very romantic. Besides, it's much more interesting than, for example, Oma meeting Shu through arranged marriage. The will for two person to choose other rather than let others decide for them is something Mayumi herself can rallying behind.
The next scene is about a skirmish between the two village's forces. Judging by the dialogue, the battle have taken place days after the last time Oma and Shu met. Oma's combat ability seemed to have taken a nosedive, narrowly being saved by her allies. Jing questioned her, wondering why she has been missing out of her training. Her excuse of spying on the enemy doesn't seem to have convinced the suspicious leader. If Jing found out Oma is secretly meeting with Shu, the scandal would have destroyed his reputation.
...
"Absolutely not!" The tribe leader of Shu's village bellowed, smashing a clay cup to the floor. "I forbid you to meet with the enemy's daughter!"
"But father," Shu quickly pleaded, kowtowing down to the floor. "Our village have been at war for generations, the reasons we have fought has already lost to time. Shu is the daughter of Jing, if I can make peace with her then surely the same can happen between you and Jing. Why can't you see the reasons and-"
"Insolence!" The table is smashed, splinters exploded everywhere. "How dare you value a mere woman over the well-being of our village! Don't you know that we have lost many territory already! I decree that you shall no longer meet her again, or you are no longer my son!" The leader stormed away, leaving Shu wiping away his teary eyes. Seeing how sad the actor is, the Kyoshi warrior find it difficult to watch. The notion of being threatened by your own family member is something too frightening for them to imagine. They are lucky enough to have two loving parents who reasonably strict but also caring. Akahana may be intimidating when she is angered, but they will always felt safe and look up to her most of the time. As for the calm and reasonable Hakaru, having someone you can seek advice from rather than being judged definitely is better than what Shu is going through now.
"I should have saw this coming," Shu muttered bitterly as he picked himself up. He is no warrior, rather the man have a thin figure. His attempts to make peace between the two villages are all futile. No matter what he did, the two sides will still find petty reasons to continue the bloodshed. "Pride and foolish ambitions consumes the hearts of humans, blinding them from the pain and suffering of those in the war." He sighed, unable to accept humanity's foolishness.
Wars are fought because of foolish leaders who started them, yet all the subjects must endure the hardships caused by a senseless conflict. Shu left the room, walking out of the view. And with that, another scene concluded with the closing of the curtains. The play continued for about an hour, until it reached to the point where Oma and Shu are attempting to find each other again.
...
"Stay behind me!" Oma shouted, pointing her spear at a giant badgermole which suddenly emerged from the ground. Artificial growling noise is created, whether or not the sound is accurate, they cannot tell. To be completely candid, both Kyoshi warriors expected the noise to be a more high pitch squeak rather than an intimating growl.
Of course, the troupe couldn't possibly get a real one on stage, that would be near impossible. Such prominent creatures are only owned by prestigious Earth Benders who have proven themselves to be grand masters. Being able to ride one is considered something of tremendous status, albeit not as significant as the Fire Nation and their extraordinary dragons.
The director used a giant wooden puppet to stimulate the movements of a real badgermole. Under the control of multiple backstage crew using strings and ropes, it acted aggressively towards the two lovers, waving its giant claws as though it is going to cut them like two blades of grass.
Before Oma can plunge her spear into the beast's heart, the stage is graced by a soothing music produced by a bamboo flute. It was Shu, who pulled out his instrument and begin to softly perform, pacifying the badgermole. The animal lowered its massive claws, expressing intentions to not be the duo's adversary. After this confrontation, the two of them befriended the beast, all thanks Shu's musical talent which in this case is more useful than Oma's spear. It's clear what message is being pushed here. Not every conflicts and problems can be solved through fighting. Brute force and combat skills alone can only get you so far if one does not equip themselves to solve the root of the conflict.
Satchiko may have used her Chi-blocking to end the brawl of two exchange students, but she cannot make any changes to the wider picture. If those two were to meet again, no doubt they will fight. She could go around the campus to stop fights all day, but that will never address the core issue of the conflict. Siaw Jong and Jian Sin's war provides an eye opening experience for her, and that is war can bring strangers to fight each other simply because of their birthplace. It is a sad reality, one perhaps her mother already grasped around when she was a teenage Kyoshi warrior.
...
The badgermole is one of the four original elemental masters, it is only through them that Earth bending can be learnt by humans. Oma and Shu have slowly gained a better understanding of the badgermole and what they are capable of. These animals dwell underground, proficient in Earth bending. The two lovers learned to feel the earth, just like the badgermole. Their urge to be with each other is also strong, like the element itself. And their love for one another is more prominent and powerful than that mountain which divided their two village. With these qualities, they quickly mastered Earthbending, allowing them to bend room sized stones effectively. The badgermole have essentially became their friend, a beacon of hope for their forbidden relationship. There is also a fascinating aspect of their behavior, and that is the creature have a strong penchant toward music. Perhaps the zither sound played during the battle against the army of White sparrow daofei may also be a melody for the Judge of Honghai's personal battle steed.
Both Oma and Shu ventured away from their village to meet each other in secret, but the risk is always high. Which is why they created an elaborate labyrinth of tunnels right underneath the Kolau mountains. Anyone who follows them will be lost. It is in these tunnels that Oma and Shu shared their love for one another, far away from the conflict and prejudice of their respective villages.
"Shu, how long do you think we can continue like this?" Oma asked, saddened that this is the only place they can gather and enjoy each other's companionship. She leaned onto her lover's shoulders as they both sat on a chair made of stone. "Do you very believe one day everyone will accept...well us?"
The people already knew what they are up to, they can only hide the secret for so long. Each time they disappear into the tunnels, the people on both sides can draw a clearer picture. Their reaction to their Earth-bending have already caused commotion in their communities, forming pressure and anxiety for the young lovers.
Shu was hesitant to reply, knowing how all the cards are stacked against him. The two warring people are too stubborn and too hurt. This conflict have taken too much from their lives, and there is no way everyone is just going to drop their weapons and make peace.
"I refuse to accept our love to only flourish in darkness," he held Oma's warm hands tighter, making his beloved blush. "I promise you, the whole world will no longer judge our feelings for one another!"
Mayumi's eyes gazed at the glowing ceiling. The stones above the cave brightened, symbolizing the affection and love of Oma and Shu. Her mother always says that a flower that blooms in adversity is the always the rarest. Akahana always have a passion for red flowers, especially growing plants like roses. Even if the entire world condemns Oma and Shu's relationship, they will not allow that to sever their bond.
The musicians begin to play a very familiar tone as Oma and Shu both begin to dance, with song lyrics that rallied a wave of crowd enthusiasm.
The music piece was heard before at the Kheshig's camp, called Secret Tunnel. But unlike some normal street side performer, the musicians here made the music sound ethereal, and prominent to the immense love between the two main characters.
Suki love this song, even remembering every word in the lyrics. And Mayumi couldn't help but be drawn into the wonderful music itself as Satchiko covered her ears, hoping to shield out the sounds. It's strange how this song above love and passion is so divisive. There are two people in this world, those who can appreciate this song, and those who resent it to the core. While Suki enjoyed it, her husband is the opposite apparently. And by watching Satchiko's dreadful reaction while she herself savored every moment, she can clearly see the parallels.
"Are they done yet?" Satchiko asked, pleading for the music to end.
"Not yet sister," Mayumi smirked smoothed her sister's back to ease out the 'pain'. She considered herself lucky to have such wonder taste in music. Captain Ganbaatar can say anything he wants about this vibrant song, but she will always appreciate the original song writer's work.
What Mayumi loved about operas of the mainland is how it is a well designed musical enchanted with excellent choreographed dance and pleasant songs. But the story itself never felt being placed on the sidelines. In fact, the songs and dances only highlighted the moral of the story even more. Love is precious. It is a powerful force as seen in how Oma and Shu behaved when in each other's presence.
She watched as the two actors danced, complementing one another. By the way they both act, she wouldn't be surprised if those two are actually a couple in real life. While Mayumi have rejected countless suitors, whether they are on the island or not, she never felt connected with any of them in a meaningful way. Many times she felt they only value her looks and what they can gain from marrying the chief's oldest daughter. It's like her exceptional beauty amongst her fellow cohorts is more of a curse rather than a blessing.
Her parents did gave her some suggestions in choosing a good partner, and she still rejected all offers from wealthy men. Because for her, she wants to find someone whom she genuinely knew beforehand. Someone she can trust and call an equal, and stood alongside him all day without fear. But she doesn't want someone who is weak willed. Perhaps she is setting her expectations too high. If her mother is right on one thing, being a Kyoshi warrior already meant the options are limited. How can she find a partner whom she can call an equal when she doesn't even know what that even means definitively!?
Maybe she is worrying too much. Her own mother is the strongest Kyoshi warrior of her generation, and she never worried about marriage like she did.
It is undeniable, that a mere housewife is the strongest Kyoshi warrior alive. A strict yet motherly figure in their lives, Akahana is also respected but also feared. What did she did to be view as such? The younger generation are oblivious, and their parents never talked about it. Not every Kyoshi warrior can be called the 'strongest'. Akahana, the matron of their village, is also often being called the 'Red flower'. It is a title bestowed by Akahana's predecessor. Who knows what being called that name very means, but that certainly doesn't have anything to do with what Mayumi is worried about now.
Her own mother married Hakaru, a man chained to a pair of glasses and spent his days working with books and teaching kids how to read. Instead of a knife, his 'weapon' of choice is a brush pen. Essentially, he is not a fighter, he is weak when compared to Akahana, a woman always seen in a suit of armor and a thick layer of war paint. Carrying weapons around all day in case she needs to visit evil deeds by slicing pirates into pieces. Yet, despite how people from the other two villages comment how incompatible their personalities are, she never felt her parents allowed differences to create conflict. Neither of them felt threatened by the other. Even though her father nearly lost his arm, and life, to their mother in the beginning.
But at the end of day, Mayumi admits she is just as clueless about this part of life as many people. And if she is being completely honest, searching for romantic love seemed like a burden. Her true mission is to protect her sister, who deserves her love and attention far more than someone else. She simply cannot allow some romance to distract her from duty. But when looking at the idealistic dynamic between Oma and Shu, part of her wanted to experience something similar.
Who knows, maybe someone around the corner would gift her a purple flower, fulfilling Aunt Meng's fortunetelling. But what is concerning her would be what to do afterwards. She is a Kyoshi warrior, master of the blade and fans. But when it comes to forming a lifelong partnership, she may need to draw more experience and wisdom from her parents.
She felt a quick nudge from Satchiko, informing her about the stage's next scene. By dwelling too much on her own thoughts, Mayumi realized the scene transferred to Shu, who is being surrounded by his father's soldiers.
Shu is being forced into the upcoming battle, and Mayumi knew where this might lead to. While the man tried to defend himself with his basic Earth bending, he was impaled ruthlessly by four arrows, thrusting into his chest. The music played a somber tone as he dropped to the floor, dying from the arrow wounds.
Members of the audience gasped, seeing the player of Shu's body lifelessly lying on the floor. And even though Mayumi knew this is just a play, it's still challenging to see a character whom you have invested yours emotions to simply die on stage. Shu is such a vital part of the play. His goals are understandable, to end the conflict between the two villages. Yet, such a kindhearted man has to be harmed in such unjust ways. Some emotional members of the audience even booed at the actors in archer costumes, expressing disgust at the script.
"It's so stupid," Satchiko bitterly muttered. "The two villages are both idiots. Shu would have still be with his girlfriend Oma if it wasn't for their stupid war."
"Indeed," Mayumi closely observed Satchiko's expression. No matter how hard her sister tries to hide it, Mayumi can sense a change of attitude. There is clearly an underlying disdain for the story's two village leaders. Every time they appear on stage, Satchiko would react by displaying a look with a tiny killing intent.
...
A sad and depressing tone is played as Oma kneeled on the ground, right in front of Shu's grave. He was everything to her. Like Yin and Yang, they exist in duality. If the two villages were never at war, then maybe they would never have been separated. But fate has a different say, and bestow them a cruel destiny.
"You made me a promise, but you did not fulfill it." Oma said bitterly, and entrenched in grief. It's as though her lover can hear her. "When you didn't show up in our regular meeting spot, I waited for hours." She sobbed, dropping a single tear to the floor. Her dark overflowing hair veiled her face. But through the gap of those hair, they saw her eyes snapped open with renewed determination. If there is anything that can be said about Oma, is that love is a strong driving force and motivation. So powerful that it can shatter blades of war. "Wait for me Shu, I will help you fulfill your dream."
The curtains closed, and Satchiko begin to yawn. The play has definitely drained a lot of energy from her. She asked Mayumi for the last remaining dumpling, but noticed that her sister is glued to the stage.
"Hey sis, gimme one would you?" Said Satchiko, who then noticed Mayumi isn't responding. "Big sis? Hello?"
"Oh sorry!" Mayumi wiped her teary eyes as she handed the last dumpling to Satchiko. She then drew out a piece of handkerchief from her kimono, a cheap one she found in the market. The younger sister grimaced as Mayumi sneezed loudly.
"Y-you are crying?" Satchiko asked. "It's just a play sister." It's funny to watch Mayumi being so invested into the play. While she herself is more focused on the bigger conflict between the two villages, it seems her sister is more emotionally invested in the characters.
"Hehehehe!" Satchiko chuckled. "You never told me you would cry in the middle of the play!"
"Shhhh!" Mayumi placed her hands on Satchiko's lips, silencing her. "I'm trying to watch!" She eyed the stage, eyes still filled with tears.
In response, Satchiko hastily swallowed the last dumpling and crossed her arms. Mayumi, along with a good portion of the audience, is too entrenched into the tragic love story of Oma and Shu. A bit irritating, if she do say so herself. But why are crying over some love story? She cry when she witnessed horrible events like...
Her thoughts stopped, trying to remove that horrifying image of that nameless girl. That sad cry and the facial expression, just thinking about that makes her miserable. At this day, she still blames herself for what happened, if only she was stronger.
...
Oma stood in the middle, all clad in a silk dress and her face paint. The fighters on two sides watched as Oma lift up her arms, preparing what seems to be an Earth bending stance.
"You have finally come!" Jing said in relief. "Quick, use your powers and wiped out our hated enemies!"
It was an order to an underling rather than a request from a family member. Oma resented this, she loathed everything about this petty conflict.
"It was your father and his men who killed my son!" The other villagers leader shouted at the Earth bender. "Avenge Shu, he must not die in vain. It is his dying wish that my people can achieve everlasting victory upon our foe. As his lover, you must help realize this dream.
"We both know that is not true, Shu never bore such meaningless goals." Oma scathed. "As his father, it seems that you don't even love him at all!" Those words pieced Shu's father, even Satchiko felt how insulting that was.
The music became grandeur, signaling Oma's next step. She extended her hands to opposite directions. She breathed in deeply, and said what she wanted to say for a long time. "I loath all this war between our villages, first it took away my mother, than my true love. But what it took away first is our kindness. It made us humans into nothing more than the beasts that roam the wilds, living without morals and conscience. I had enough, it's time that I end this!" Her voice ranged the entire stage like an angry spirit, forcing everyone to tremble in fear.
With one single lift, she displayed a potent display of Earth bending. While it wasn't as spectacular as how Lei described it, Oma's bending was impressive as it managed to instill fear into all the other actors. Stage crew used props to mimic giant mountains shooting up from the grounds. If the legend truly describe what happened accurately, then Oma essentially created multiple mountains by herself. Satchiko lamented, such impressive feat like moving giant landmass is akin to their founder's Avatar state.
Oma stood onto one of the mountains, the tallest one in the middle. She looked down on them, belittling their puny existence. The people on both sides dropped their weapons in fear, realizing that the emotionally devastated woman can simply destroy them all. But she didn't, she just stood there, with a face of nonchalant.
With the bright and round sun standing in the background behind Oma, she said the final lines of the play. She could have destroyed them all, but she decided that this opportunity is a good way to fulfill Shu's dream.
"Why do we fight?" She asked, but no one answered her. "Is it for our meaningless pride? Our misguided intentions?" Still, no one dare to answer. "Shu was my best friend, and my lover, he always told me that one day the two villages can live in peace and harmony. Such a peaceful man, yet he has met such an undeserving fate."
The faces of the fighters obviously displayed tremendous guilt. Especially Shu's father, who forced the young gentleman onto the battlefield. Shu isn't a fighter, he is more of a peacemaker. It is truly unfortunate that Shu cannot see what Oma is accomplishing next.
She declared the war over. The music played a peaceful tone as both villages slowly helped her build a giant city on a mountain.
Two lovers, forbidden from one another, for a war divides their people, and a mountain divides them apart. Yet, despite such challenges, their love is so strong, that it is enough to end a conflict.
The woman's name was Oma, and the man's name Shu. And the great city in which the two tribes live in harmony was named in their honor.
It's called Omashu.
Oma stood alone on the now silent stage, she bowed at everyone present and then raised her back up again.
There was a lone clap from the audience that shattered this, and then followed by another. And then without warning, everyone is clapping loudly, even whistling as they cheered this brilliant performance.
"Thank you for attending!" Oma smiled. The crowd erupted in thunderous cheers as the actor who played Shu reappeared, followed by all the other players. Although the story ended tragically with the male lead died, Shu standing on the stage now formulates a subconscious relief in everyone's heart. An imaginary feeling that the two lovers did in fact ended up with one another. It is a childish notion, but a very captivating one.
Mayumi clapped intensely as the curtains slowly closes for the final time.
Satchiko watched Oma specifically. The mother of Earth bending is standing right there, enjoying the admiration of everyone present. This woman mastered Earthbending and became a master at it, lifting giant mountains and creating elaborate labyrinth underground. But a huge aspect of Oma is that she used her bending to end conflicts and prevent bloodshed between the inconsolable tribes.
The Kyoshi warrior locked her eyes at her hand, wiggling it around as she noticed the one barely noticeable scratch mark. She got this when she first touched a real metal fan as a child. Rubbing her finger across the sharp edges, she hurt herself. But the pain didn't damper her enthusiasm to train. She was happy to be a Kyoshi warrior. And now that she technically is one, she was supposed to be happy.
There wasn't any curve on her lips when she thought about this. Earth bending is always there in the background, no matter how hard she tries to deny it. Like her emerald green eyes, it constantly reminds her of this gift she never choose to receive. She always felt pressure about this aspect of her life.
When looking at Oma and what she did with the help of Earthbending, how can she not compare herself with that legendary figure? Being able to display a potent demonstration of Earth manipulation while using it to forge everlasting peace is certainly more praiseworthy than her own ineptness.
She let out a sad sigh.
It's just too much and too difficult. She wants her mum to be happy, but is that very a good motivator for her learning this art?
...
"That was amazing, I am impressed by the songs and dances. The director very showed Oma and Shu's love for each other in a very nice way." Remarked Mayumi as both of them walked down the streets, heading back to her small apartment. Truly, the play has been a spectacular experience for them all. Such an incredible mainland Earth Kingdom story being portrayed in a play, if only they can have something like this back home.
"It's ok..." Satchiko with an unsure expression. "I still don't even know why the two villages were fighting in the first place."
Hudie already returned to the university's dorms, leaving both sisters treading across the now almost cleared streets. They took a shorter road back to the destination, a place near the wall.
"It's still hard to believe that our face paint is used by other people, but that headset Oma wore definitely looks pretty as well, if only I can also wear it one day." Satchiko continued to walk as she casually commented Oma's costume.
"But...don't you already have a headdress?" Mayumi asked, almost frowning. "Ever since we left the town of Shang, I haven't seen you wearing it. I thought you always wanted to be a Kyoshi warrior, you are one now."
Satchiko's thoughts went silent, refusing to entertain Mayumi'a challenging questions. "Let's keep walking."
"Is there something you wanted to tell me?" They both stopped in the middle of path between multiple residential houses. From here, they can actually see a refugee camp, housing those who are displaced by the wars outside.
"You know, if you very are struggling with anything, you can tell me sister. If there is anything you need help with, I can solve it for you." Mayumi said, but she was met with silence as Satchiko locked her head at the camp made of needy people. That settlement stood out like a sore thumb when compared to the other more furnished houses around. While refugees are a common sight in the lower ring, that camp acts like a magnet, making Satchiko look directly at it.
"It's fine..." Satchiko expired some air, allowing it to flow out. Her expression is similar when she saw those street dwellers back in the state of Yi. She sounds very tired, and wished to just go to sleep. "You worked so hard at the restaurant, mopping floors and cleaning the dishes. Just seeing you being constrained to something so tiring just makes me wish we swap places. You should have been the one to be in university, and not me-hey!"
Without much notice, Mayumi quickly tickled Satchiko, despite her protest. The older sister continued her 'assault' even as Satchiko dropped flat on the ground, almost dying from laughter.
"This is what you get for doubting yourself!" Mayumi jokingly said. "Don't you ever say those words again or I will kill you!" It's obviously just a fun little jest. Satchiko got back up again, still laughing from that unexpected interaction. It did distracted her from earlier thoughts.
"Ok, ok!" She said. "I yield! Goodness, you used surprised attack, that doesn't seem fair. Very dishonorable from Mayumi, the world's best sister."
"The enemy would never play fair, you said that yourself didn't you?" Mayumi quoted what Satchiko said near the violative field of Xuedi. "You should always anticipate where danger may come from, including from someone you trust."
"But, you are my sister." Satchiko stated, amused by Mayumi's over serious words. "If I can't even trust you, what sort of person am I? Besides, we are Kyoshi warriors, usually it is we who perform the sneak attack."
"Well, that is true." Mayumi admitted. Although, she herself have never seen Satchiko ambushing trouble making pirates back home. Usually the youngster would charge straight into action, plowing through anyone that stood in her path. Kyoshi warriors are known to be exceptional fighters, able to fight almost every non-bending foe they came across. But the more experienced members would always emphasize how important it is to not act rashly. Laying out of sight and then ambush stronger enemies is the most preferred tactic of their doctrine. But her sister? She is always too eager to fight, always behave so childish when facing a potently strong foe. Sometimes, she wondered when will her sister become more sensible, and understand not every situation must be handled by fighting someone directly.
...
Satchiko pulled out a wool mattress from the closet and laid it across a small empty space in Mayumi's apartment. She is spending the night here, and will return to the dorm tomorrow. It's strange to think about this, but most people on the island actually sleep on the floor inside their wooden lodges. Wooden beds are actually quite rare for their village, as few people actually go to great lengths to built actual beds. When she lied down onto the mattress, her back instantly felt the hard floor she never felt accustomed to. Unlike the other villagers, she never felt what it's like to rest like this.
"You know, I miss our bunk bed." Satchiko said as watched Mayumi cook their dinner. "Kazuki told me that sleeping on the floor saves a lot of space, but I hate how uncomfortable it is."
"The mattress is a bit too thin, but I remember Orihime tend to use two layers." Mayumi replied as she used a meat cleaver to chop up some veggies. The hulking rectangular blade is harder to familiarize herself with, as she usually uses the small cooking knife her mother had. The blade are utilized by the cooks working in the eatery, chopping roast ducks for hungry customers. She then placed the vegetables into the wok, and begin to use a big spatula spoon to stir the content.
"What are you making by the way?" Satchiko inquired as she rubbed her empty stomach. "Those are not fish stew or citatap."
"It's not, I am trying to learn what those chefs are making in Grandma Jin's restaurant." Mayumi stirred the content in the pot, which are rice and some broccoli mixed with some cabbages. She poured in some sauce, experimenting with the flavors. Next to her, is the stack of bamboo steamers she is so fascinated by, heating what appears some leftover meat buns.
"Here we go!" Mayumi poured what is from the wok onto a plat. Based on appearance, it's just fried rice with some vegetables. Without any tables, she placed the plate of rice and bamboo steamers on the floor. And Satchiko's stomach roared in delight.
Satchiko sniffed loudly and took a spoonful of rice and shove it in her mouth. "It's...good..."
Mayumi can obviously detect her sister's attempt to mask the discomfort. Unfortunately, she is still trying to learn this new cooking method. Her mastery of cuisine native to Kyoshi island doesn't help that much here. Stirred fried rice is still something she tries to perfect. So that one day she can work in Jin's place as a chef, for higher payment.
Not wishing to leave Satchiko with an empty stomach, Mayumi opened up the lid of the bamboo steamer, revealing the food.
"Don't worry sister, the steamed buns would surely not fail us." As the thick fog of steam slowly dissipated, Mayumi felt her heart sank as the end results are not pleasant.
"It's all soggy." Satchiko used her fingers to sense one of the bun's outer layer. It felt like the meat buns have been over cooked. Too much steam have ventilated the food, making them difficult to stomach.
Mayumi used a pair of chopsticks to dig out the meat. She put them all in a singular bowl and hand them to Satchiko.
"Eat up sister, your brain needs all the nutrients."
Satchiko stared uncomfortably at the bowl of meat, and then shifted back to Mayumi who is eating the burnt fried rice. Her sister rather consume overcooked food rather than taking some edible meat away from Satchiko.
What did she fo to deserve such a wonderful sister. Even if she offers some portion of the meat to Mayumi, she knew it would rejected. She ate her share. It was more difficult she thought it would be.
After the meal...
Mayumi yawned as she extinguished the lights. Both of them begin to lay down on the thin mattress, with Satchiko staring right towards the ceiling. "You know Mayumi, I very hope we can get back to Kyoshi island as soon as possible."
"Same," Mayumi replied while resting her eyes. "I do miss teaching those younger trainees, I hope Orihime is doing a good job back home."
"Speaking of Orihime, why did you pick her to be your substitute?" Satchiko suddenly asked.
Mayumi, who is already tired from the day's work, used her last remaking energy to talk. "Mmmm, I don't know...maybe because that weaver girl like to work and something...something..." She then slept quietly, and Satchiko covered the sheet of blanket higher up.
"Goodnight sister," Satchiko smiled, also closing her eyes and finally begin to rest. She is glad to see Mayumi again, and felt they should spend more time together whenever possible.
The city of Ba Sing Se surely is an interesting place. With its massive population, it drew its people from various lands on the continent, escaping war. Just like the story of Oma and Shu, maybe one day the state of Siaw Jong and Jian Sin can also find peace and harmony. War is clearly a bad thing, it harms everyone, including those who does not wish to partake in it. But if the story of the play says anything, is that love is a strong force capable of many things.

You know, I very enjoyed writing this chapter. Just the characters doing very normal things and explore more about the two character's differences. I personally very liked the story of Oma and Shu, and using a Beijing opera style stage play to depict the story is so fitting to a city like Ba Sing Se. The way real life actors talk in Beijing opera is very interesting. I'm not very sure how to depict them through writing, but they sound more singing rather than normal speech. Oma's costume with the green pompon headdress does drew inspiration from actual costumes. And a side note. Even though I am the writer, admittedly I also had a hard time to keep track how many weapons Mayumi have. It's like the knives she threw never runs out. The best explanation I have is that she is using hacks, so she has Infinite ammo. But fear not, I will report this to the server admin, and she will be banned from the match. Ok that was a joke.
Guest: Can you tell us more about your own thoughts as to how Shui or any water bender can blood bend without a full moon?
Me: From a real life perspective, a human's body is majority water. So if a water bender knows that then it very wouldn't be that hard to simple bend the water within a person's body, creating the illusion that it is the blood that is being controlled.
From a lore perspective, we will assume that blood is the one being controlled. Just like how metal bending is actually about bending the impurities in the metal, blood bending might be learned by familiarizing basic anatomy. What do I mean? Waterbenders might be able to learn the art by learning the human anatomy itself. By being able to comprehend it, you can do it. But how do people know more about the human anatomy without textbooks you may ask. I don't want to get too specific about it, but let's just say the learning method definitely is not ethical.
