Chapter 1: It Started Years Ago

"The Akatsuki. One of the biggest musical acts this century." – Konoha Daily Magazine

"Their sound is so versatile, the music spectrum is their domain. They'll be on top for quite a while, to overlook them would be a shame." – Killer Bee, multi award winning rapper and music producer.

But how exactly did this superstar group come into existence? The article below details their rise to fame four years ago:

It was a sunny afternoon in the school canteen. Classes ended an hour ago, the students still on the school grounds were busy with their extra curriculars. The occasional sound of a baseball bat hitting a ball and subsequent running could be heard from the distance. The echoing splashing from the swim team, in sync clapping and stomping coming from the dance club and classical music from the music room. Itachi could hear all of it from his seat in the almost empty eating area.

The Uchiha heir put his earphones in, listening to the score from a movie he'd recently enjoyed watching, as he wrote in his journal.

"That another song you're working on?" he heard the question from over his shoulder as someone removed his left earphone. He didn't need to look to know who it was.

"It is. You're done earlier than usual, Shisui." He said gathering his things and slinging his bag over his shoulder as the two Uchiha left the room. Itachi usually spent his afternoons writing lyrics in the canteen while he waited for his cousin to finish his training with the archery team. Itachi didn't have his license yet so he had to rely on Shisui for a lift home. It wasn't that he couldn't drive, Itachi was an excellent driver, he just always delayed taking the driving test. Shisui assumed it was so he could keep getting free rides from him.

"Yeah we had to end it early after one of the new members accidentally shot an arrow into coach Urabe's arm."

Shisui recounted the whole story to Itachi as they headed to his car. They put their bags in the back and got into their seats, Shisui starting the car and leaving the school grounds, it was a fifteen minute drive back to the Uchiha Estate.

"You know one of these days you're going to have to get your license. This is my final year in high school, after that, you're gonna have to drive yourself and Sasuke back home when he starts high school." Shisui started, eyes focused on the road.

"I'll worry about that when the time comes." Itachi replied staring out the window "I've still got you for a whole year."

"You're way too comfortable. Anyways what are you going to do with the song you wrote today?"

"Same as all the others."

"So, nothing. What's the point of writing all those amazing songs if they're just going to fill the pages of your journal, which by the way has seen better days." Shisui commented

"I was thinking of starting a group but I never really got around to it."

"Sounds like your general attitude towards driving." Shisui said under his breath. "I think you should go for it. Who knows, right now I might be driving the soon-to-be lead singer of best music group around." He joked.

"Ha, if that were true we'd be in a much more expensive car." he smirked.

Itachi was back in his room after dinner and he'd helped Sasuke with his homework. He sat at his desk and took out his journal. Tapping his pen against the book, he read over his lyrics. The notification sound from his phone got his attention.

A message from Konan:

Tell me what you think.

Under her text was an audio file. A small smile on his face, Itachi plugged in his earphones and pressed play. Konan was an extremely skilled pianist and keyboard player and whenever she'd come up with a new melody, Itachi was the first person she'd send it to asking for feedback.

He sat back and enjoyed the light melody as it began, so soothing and calming but as it progressed it gradually got faster and more dramatic. The delicate yet passionate way she played the keys, the way he knew her to play, gave him goosebumps. Only when the song had finished did he realise he'd been singing along to it. Wait how could he sing along to an instrumental piece? Then it dawned on him. He'd been singing his own lyrics over her piece.

It was something more than luck that this had happened. Her song she'd created on her own and his lyrics he'd written on his own, coming together so perfectly as if they'd been designed that way. This was as big a sign as Itachi was going to get, first Shisui telling him to go for his idea and now this.

He immediately sent the song to his laptop and played it and recorded himself singing then sent it to Konan.

It was stunning, so much so that I added something. Take a look.

He sent her the file then closed his laptop and waited for her reply. After three minutes his phone buzzed.

So this is what it takes to get you to sing for me?— she'd added a winking emoji

But seriously though, this is amazing. It's like your lyrics added on to the feeling of the song. When did you write this?—

This afternoon while I was waiting for Shisui. Did you play it for Pain yet?—

This is the first one I haven't played for him before showing you, he's only coming back from his trip at the end of the week. You're the first person to hear it. I was unsure about it so I wanted to get your opinion first, you're always honest, sometimes too honest. So what now?—

Itachi ignored the subtle dig at him before replying.

I think we should record it.—

That weekend Itachi invited Konan over to the Uchiha Estate. Even though she'd been over plenty of times, she never quite got used to the large property of land that his family owned. Green fields as far as the eye could see, a large lake on the west side, a well upkept garden in the east side that was something out of a fantasy film and smack dab in the middle of it all was their house—scratch that—their mansion.

Three stories of white walls, floor to ceiling windows and pure extravagance. Itachi met her at the large wooden front door.

"Coming here always makes my head spin." She admitted as she walked in.

"I thought you'd be used to it by now."

"I doubt I ever will be." She looked around the room as if she were seeing it for the first time. The beige marble floors, the living area with enough seating to host a lot of guests, the state of the art kitchen where everything looked so crisp and clean. All the cabinets were press in's so there were no handles. The aesthetic light fixtures and the grand chandelier in the centre of it all. Itachi chuckled at her reaction as he handed her a glass of ice tea.

"So are we going to the recording studio in town from here?"

"No, we're going upstairs." He answered as he lead the way and Konan followed. She had no idea what she was in for. After climbing all those stairs, they made it to the third floor. Now she understood why he gave her a drink, she downed half of it while Itachi unlocked the door in front of them.

Now that she thought about it, Konan had never been up here before. To the left of them was a training room with a whole assortment of exercise equipment and a large sparring mat. In front of the them was the room they were about to enter and to the right was another entertainment area with a tv and couches and a door leading to a bathroom. So lost in thought Konan hadn't heard Itachi call her inside. When she walked in she almost dropped her glass.

"You've got to be kidding me! You have a recording studio in your house?" she asked incredulously, looking around the fully equipped room and recording booth, with instruments, in front of her.

"I haven't been here in a while, sometimes I don't feel like taking the trip up here, unlike Sasuke who goes to his quite often." Itachi took a seat at the mixing desk.

Wait what? Hold on a second.

"You two have your own, as in, separate studios? Next you're going to tell me you own a private island." She set her glass down because she knew at some point she'd drop it with all these surprises.

"Well not yet, the paperwork for it is a nightmare." He brushed his hair back, Konan's jaw dropped. "Konan, I'm joking." He smirked.

"Honestly I thought you were joking when you suggested we record the song, I mean one recording session at the studio in town costs so much. Then when I woke up this morning I remembered, oh wait Itachi is a freaking majillionaire, of course he could get this organised." Konan knew she was rambling but she had to get all her shock out. Itachi just watched her go on and on animatedly, with an amused smile. "Oh but hell was I wrong, no we're not going to some fancy studio, we're just gonna go upstairs like it's so normal to have, not one but, two recording studios. Honestly, just wow Itachi." She finally sat down with a heavy sigh.

"Are you finished? It's all out of your system?" He couldn't deny that he was enjoying this.

"No wait I have one more thing to complain about. You're telling me the only thing that's kept you from coming up here and recording all your songs was a flight of stairs?" She threw a cushion at him which he'd dodged.

"A pretty long flight of stairs." He corrected her and she playfully rolled her eyes.

"Okay I think I'm done now, we can get to work." She finished the rest of her drink and walked into the sound booth. So many instruments, from strings and woodwind to brass and the one that caught her eye immediately, a sleek black piano. She went straight to it and sat in the stool, marvelling at the beautiful instrument.

"I am definitely going to steal this from you some day." She played a short melody on the keys.

"Have fun getting it down those stairs." he answered sarcastically.

After a while of setting up and warming up Konan was ready to play her song. A focused look on her face. She took a deep breath and waited for Itachi's cue and then she began playing. The melody he knew so well by now sounded even more dramatic and powerful as he was seeing her play it. Her whole body was involved in getting the sound across. She was in her element, the music flowing freely, her creation filling the entire room. Itachi had goosebumps again, the steely focus and sheer enjoyment for what she was doing was evident. What an incredible pianist she was indeed. The last note ending the song slowly faded away. He'd been absorbed by her performance. As soon as he'd stopped recording, he called her back.

"So?" she asked excitedly

"It sounded even better this time, I don't know why you doubted this song."

"Well it's gonna take both of us to make this song even better, it's your turn now, Itachi." She was genuinely excited to hear him sing his song. Yes, she'd already heard him sing it and sing in general but now he was doing so in a serious way and in a serious setting. For someone of his not-so-humble background and overflowing talents, Itachi was a pretty modest person, never boasting or bragging on any of his blessings. He liked to keep to himself, only his close friends knew anything about him.

Itachi showed her the controls and what she needed to do before stepping into the booth himself. He focused himself, eyes closed for a few seconds before giving Konan the go ahead.

Konan had been ready to hear him and she was not disappointed. His voice seamlessly flowed and smoothly carried on, it sounded so sincere, his voice conveying all the emotions as the song described the feelings of the singer about their lover. The slight deepness of his voice, yet light and breathy. His voice rich and soulful as hot chocolate on a cold day is comforting. She had chills at the end of his performance.

"People are going to be mind-blown to find out someone as aloof as you has such an inviting voice." She remarked as he came back to her side. "The song blew me away."

"I think it's missing something." He thought out loud.

"Like what?"

"Hearing it again just now, this song isn't a solo but rather a duet." He commented. Konan's eyes widened.

"Wait, you don't mean with me do you?" she asked nervously. "No ways! I'm not a singer, Itachi."

"But you can sing, I've heard you before."

"Yeah but I mean, those times weren't serious." She looked away from him.

"That only means you sound even better when you are serious." He walked over and sat next to her.

"Your voice would completely overpower mine." She turned to face him.

"From what I can remember of your singing, your voice would complement mine."

"I don't know, Itachi…" She felt unsure.

"Konan, how long have we been friends?" he leaned forward in his seat.

"About four years now." She replied not seeing where he was going with this.

"Which means we know each other pretty well. Would I be asking this if I wasn't sure it would work? Sing with me Konan, please."

He had a point there. They really did know each other well and Itachi always thought things through. She thought over his words for a bit longer.

"Alright let's do it." She felt confidence building up inside her. Itachi smiled as they both went into the recording booth. He'd asked Sasuke to operate while they were inside.

The melody began and together they started to sing. The poetic sincere lyrics were brought to life by two complimenting voices harmonising angelically. Itachi could feel how nervous Konan was and whenever she needed reassurance to keep going she'd look over at Itachi and he'd give her a small nod, singing with a genuine smile. Silently he was cheering her on. The end of the chorus was their favourite line to sing: "No matter the season, I'll always have a reason to love you."

At the end of the song, they removed their headphones and Konan felt a little teary eyed.

"That was… I can't even describe it."

"It was perfect, thanks to you." He put his hand on her shoulder but she hugged him instead.

When they went back to the studio, even young Sasuke was somewhat entranced by the performance that had just happened. He played it back for them, it sounded as good as they anticipated. This song had a soul of its own.

"I can't believe this is us." Konan complimented. "Where do we go from here?"

Itachi turned and looked at her.

"I think we should keep this going, make more music." He said with determination in his eyes.

"We should start a band."

And that's chapter one done, hope you enjoyed reading it cuz it was definitely a lot of fun to write. Reviews appreciated. And the extra fun and craziness begins in chapter two, writing this has been so much fun and I can't wait to share this story. Also wow Itachi and Konan, interesting duo, just a random thought that popped in my head. Anyways, that's it for now.

Well that's it from me-

Until the next chapter: Ketsui Tasogare :-)
