Episode 15- The Last Stand (Part 5)
(Back with Mark…)
He felt like it had been forever since he had been on these streets, and in a way he supposed it had been. Mark tensed, as he and his comrades walked down the streets of Westville. After Tesi had hacked the computer brain and took over the drones. Mark had assembled a small team to take a bus down to the surface below to help in any way they could.
His cousin, James was with him, along with Gir, Shyann, Jenkins, Jack, Elisabeth, Diana, Amber, Gwynn, and finally Victor. The team was smaller than he liked, but James was afraid that something may go wrong. Of Course Mark understood, if something did; Zim would need all the help he could get.
"Okay am I the only one who feels out of place?" Gwynn asked, her voice was like a soft whisper.
No one blamed her, everyone felt it. Yes, they were free, and no longer considered delinquents or terrorist. But they had been hiding for so long, been seen as criminals in the eyes of the law for so long. That being out in the open, just casually walking the streets. It felt so…wrong!
"It's okay." Mark assured them all. "We are just here to help." He froze as a drone approaches them.
"Human, state your business." It ordered.
"We are here to aid in the relief effort." Mark answered calmly. "In any way we can."
The drone thinks on this, no doubt it's checking with Tesi for approval. "Authorization granted. Please escort your team to Zone C." The drone printed out a Map, and handed it to Mark.
Zone C had one of many relief station, no doubt human who had been injured trying to take back the streets from the drones would be there or in similar locations like this one.
"All none injured humans in need of relief have been ordered to report to Zone C." The drone informed them. "Food, water, and any Pharmacy needs will be dispatched from this location."
Mark nodded his understandment. No doubt the humans who chose to stay inside had started to run low on food. Also with no Irkens down here to keep things running; the power and water to all the homes would have eventually shut off. "Alright team you heard the drone we are to report to Zone C."
It was crazy to think they were down here starting the clean up when the final battle was still raging up there. James looked up briefly, he had wanted Rachel to join them, but understood why she couldn't. The look on her face when she saw Dib was injured was a telling one, sure she loved James, but Dib. He was like a brother to her, they were in more ways family, then friends. He felt no jealousy, honestly he was battling over whether he should stay to help them as well.
The five of them had started this rebellion together. He, Mark Rachel, Dib and Zim had banded together to make all this possible. It was crazy to think they wouldn't be together in the final moments of it all.
The team entered Zone C and imminently set to work. Hundreds of people were lines up waiting to receive their relief rations that the drone had mentioned. James noticed some of them looked like they were seconds from falling over. "Gir I need you to hand out water to everyone waiting in line." James ordered.
Gir salutes and after giving a squeal of enthusiasm grabs a pack of water and sets to work. James knows it must be hard for him to be so far from his master at a time like this, but he was glad for the robot's speed. In seconds everyone had water and some where even given chairs to rest in as they waited.
In no time at all the small group was busy completing their final task of this war. It was crazy to think it was almost over. Mark had begun to think that this war would continue on, past his life time as it had done for so many other rebel forces who had been doing this a lot longer than them. Of course, he and his team had one thing they didn't, An Amon on their side. "Finish this fast you stupid green alien." Mark whispered looking up, a smile wide across his face. "I'd like to sleep in my own bed tonight."
"Me too." James agreed.
The two laughed as they continued their work.
(Meanwhile on Zec…)
The castle was getting dangerously closer as the ship dived down towards it, ready to crash. It's moments like this that Scamooch wonders how Zim managed to pass his piloting exams. What pilot in their right mind thinks crashing is the answer. Of course, Scamooch is then forced to remember that Zim was never in his right mind. The guy was always winging it, flying by the seat of his pants.
Just then an access hatch above the throne room opens up and Zim barely manages to stop the ship from crashing as he sees it. "Well would you look at that." He laughed. "Guess I don't need to crash after all." He looks somewhat disappointed by the news.
Scamooch and Razor however look absolutely terrified, actually clinging to their seats in horror.
"Tell me is he always…" Razor doesn't have the strength to finish, not that he needs to.
"Yes…" Scamooch answered. He knows all too well that moderation was not in Zim's vocabulary. The Irken was always sporting an "All or Nothing" attitude.
Zim laughs at their expression as the ship hovers over the open access hatch. "Well here it goes."
"Are you seriously going to jump in without a plan?" Razor asked as he took his place beside him.
"Of course I have a plan." Zim mused. "We jump down and take him on as one driving force." He answered as it was obvious.
Razor knows this isn't the traditional approach. Had Red been sane, Zim would have to challenge him directly and face him in a one on one battle. Which was what had been done with Purple, the Tallest singled Zim out because he challenged his position. With Red things were already different, they could see that down below them the drones were already engaging in battle with him. Red, due to his unstable state; no longer had the right to a fair challenge. He was now a risk to not only himself, but the wellbeing of the entire Empire and those outside of it. For the betterment of them all the former Tallest Red had to be put down.
The thought alone still causes Zim immense grief, and yet he knows it must be done. He also knows that Red never valued their friendship or his loyalty. Still, to end someone who was a great part of who he was today…it was like he was destroying a piece of himself. It was the same for Purple, but it was also different. Purple was completely aware of his crimes, and his actions, while Red had mentally snapped years ago.
The Monster before them now was a shell of a once great ruler, and even if he never felt the same, Zim still admired the Irken he once was. The one that saved him with Purple all those years ago.
"Are you ready?" Razor asked, drawing him out of his thoughts.
Zim forced himself to focus. It was too late to dwell on the past now, both Red and Purple had chosen this path. They made this mess, Zim was just tasked with the burden of picking it up. Again he wonders if he truly wants this.
"Too late for doubt now." Razor mused as if reading his mind. "We both made a vow." He reminded his partner. "Time to make good on that promise."
Zim nodded, more determined now. "Let's do this." He looks to Scamooch. "Cadet your job is to propel down with us and get Dib. He'll need to be taken to the medical wing here in the castle for further treatment."
"Understood." Scamooch answered. He prepares to jump with them, but the worry look in his eyes betrays his thoughts.
"It will be over before you know it." Razor assured him.
"I just…wanted to be with you." Scamooch looked to Zim. "In the end."
Zim looks to the cadet, the one who shared a lot more with him then he would ever know.
Their eyes met, and he smiled. "But this is not the end." He assured him. "This is the beginning, the beginning of the rest of our lives, a better future."
Scamooch returned the smile, more determined now.
Finally Zim takes a deep breath and dives towards the enemy, Razor and Scamooch follow his lead.
"Dib!"
Dib's vision has begun to blur, but he knows Zim's voice when he hears it. He has heard it many times, threatening him and his planet over the years. Though he must admit hearing concern for him from the ex-invader was still something he was secretly getting used to.
"What the Irk did you manage to get yourself into?"
At the moment Dib was laying on his back, one of the drones had patched him up the best it could before joining the other in battling Red. He laughed, despite the pain it caused. "Pretended to be you to lure him in here."
"And he bought it?" Zim scoffed in surprise.
"Hey I thought I was pretty convincing." Dib whined.
"Oh yeah I seriously doubt that." Zim mused looking around. "Where's Gir?"
"He's with Mark, Now that the drones have been hacked he should be taking a small detail to the surface to help." Dib managed to answer.
Zim nodded, his attention leaving Dib to look at Red, he was acting like a wild animal now, swatting at the drones with his talons.
"He must be really out of it to not notice our arrival." Razor whispered preparing himself. His eyes glowed, but as before he does not shift. Again, he is not sure he can for he has never tried. Even though he completed the change he never wanted to be the Tallest, never felt the urge to dominate. With no drive for such roles the beast never felt the need to come out until now. Unlike Zim who desperately longed to prove he was deserving, Razor never felt the need.
"I may not be much good to you." He admits as Scamooch begins to strap Dib into a harness to help pull him into the ship.
Zim scoffed. "What's the point in having you around if you're not going to pull your own weight?" He smiles playfully.
How the ex-invader could tease him in the middle of a life or death situation astonished Razor. He couldn't help but envy the younger one's confidence.
Suddenly, Red slashes a drone just right, and it explodes leaving its partner alone in the battle. The second drone is not in better shape, barely hovering in the air.
"Scamooch get Dib out of here." Zim ordered, his words drawing Red's attention on them finally.
Red sees Zim and the Amon lets out a roar of distain, he finishes off the second drone in one blow; Charging for them before it hits the ground.
Zim tenses as Red heads straight for him, this was it the moment of truth.
Scamooch finishes with Dib and hits a device on his harness that pulls them back up. The hatch above the throne room closes behind them leaving Zim and Razor to battle the beast below.
(Following Scamooch…)
They made it inside the ship where the cadet strapped Dib in seat and swung around to the front of the castle. Several drones were there as they landed along with a small group of the renegades.
"This is going to hurt some." Scamooch said as he swung Dib's arm over his shoulder and helped him exit the ship.
Dib hissed in obvious discomfort, but says nothing. He was kind of bumbed that he wasn't going to get to see the final battle. He had always thought he'd be by Zim's side in the end, but a part of him understood. Dib had completed his mission, Earth was now free of the Irken scourge. Even if Zim managed to loose Red was no longer the Tallest and would never be seen as the leader of Irk ever again. So even if Zim lost, the other Amons, control brains and drones would bane together to end his reign. Either way Earth along with all other conquered worlds were either already free or would be in the days to follow.
In short the war was over, this final battle was not deciding the fate of the universe but the fate of Irk! This was Zim's and his new Partner's fight, not Dib's. Still the young rebel found no relief, it was crazy. Here he was defender of Earth, finally completing his mission, a job well done! And yet, all he could think about was Zim.
Was he okay? Dib sure hoped so.
One of the drones stop them just as they step off the ship. "Cadet, state your business." It orders.
"This human is a leader of the resistance and a friend of Taller Zim, he is injured and requires medical attention." Scamooch answered.
"It's okay they're with us." Jamie assured the drone. Of course, she could understand its confusion. The drone has most likely never dealt with a situation where Irkens could actually be the enemy. "Oh god Dib…" She couldn't find the words.
"Yeah I know it looks bad." Dib managed to say.
"Please you need to let him back inside." Jamie begs the drone.
"Understood." The drone says and a small hatch opens along the wall beside them. "This path will open in the medical bay. I must close it behind you, we must not allow the rogue Amon Red to escape." It explained. "He will be far more difficult to neutralize if he is loose."
"We understand." Dib managed. "Thank you."
Scamooch begins to guide him inside and down the narrow path. His only hope is that the human will not be too badly damaged and will recover quickly.
As for Zim, well he knew he could take care of himself.
(Back with Zim…)
Zim shifts, allowing the beast within to take over just as Red delivers his first blow. And in seconds the two Amons are tussling with one another like two rabid dogs. Clawing, punching, kicking, and even biting at each other's throats.
Razor hangs back, again he is not sure if he is of any help. Even if he could shift into the beast, doing so at his age could be costly. Perhaps Smoots was the better choice to be by Zim's side, being the youngest she still had a chance of finishing the change. No, there was no time for doubting, after all hadn't he been the one who just reminded Zim of their vow? A Vow both of them had made! A vow to serve his people, to lead them into a new era.
Razor banished all doubt from his mind and focused on the monster within. He knew it was there, he had the ability to shift, but did he finally have the drive?
Zim yelps, despite himself, Red has managed to pin him down. His talon hands wrapped around his neck. The sick twisted monster wanted to choke him to death slowly, wanted to make him suffer for all he had done to him. Such actions made it clear to Razor that at least a part of Red was still coherent. The fact that his hatred for his fellow Taller ran so deep that he could allow his reasoning to remain...It made something snap inside. All he had witness from these two was their hatred for Zim, and those like him! That hatred drove their every action, all their efforts drove towards eliminating defectives, the source of their rage.
If only they had let go of their hate, and used that same drive for the betterment of their race. To have such potential lost…wasted by their own self destructed actions. It made him see red in a way he never saw it before.
"Good bye Zim." Red cackled maniacally. "I have always hated you." He hissed squeezing tighter.
Zim clawed at his attacker, but Red took his blows like it was nothing, even as Zim's claws ripped gashes into his flesh. His hatred was so consuming that he didn't even feel his pain; that's how powerful the emotion was. It was kind of silly, fun even that it takes this moment for Zim to realize just how useless all his efforts to try and impress this guy was. All those years wasted, a life time of devotion, and for what?
NOTHING
Such efforts would have been spent better else were, yes it was clear to him now that he should have rebelled years ago. Of course such realizations came too late. Zim's thoughts go to Gaz as his vision begins to darken. He had promised that everything would be okay. What a foolish promise to make in a time of war; where such things could not be guaranteed.
Suddenly a dark flash of movement races past his vision taking Red with him.
Zim gasped for air, sound and vision came pouring back in slowly. He hears a blood curling howl, a yelp of pain, and suddenly a hiss of warning.
He turns towards the sounds, and what he sees is enough to make his blood run cold.
Zim had thought Red was terrifying when he changed, but Razor was absolutely monstrous. His distorted form towered over Red with ease. His red eyes like pits of fire, fangs long and dripping with saliva as he growled deep in his throat.
For a moment terror engulfs him as Zim fears for the worse. At such an old age suddenly shifting like this could cause Razor to mentally snap. Zim could now be dealing with two unstable rogues instead of one. Even so, Red has also taken a defensive stance. Either way it is obvious to him that Razor is not an ally.
Zim shifts into a defensive crouch cautiously. It would be wise for him to not make any sudden movements. Razor could get the wrong idea, see him as a threat instead of his partner, but surprisingly the older Amon is more in control then any younger Amon in his position would ever be. As Zim slowly takes his place by his side, he makes no move to attack, and shows no aggression towards him.
Zim notices this, he picks up on the unspoken cues; Razor is not compromised. In fact, he is showing a level of control that not even Zim himself has learned to comprehend.
"Shall we finish this?" Razor asked his fellow taller, his voice even, not a touch of animal in it.
"Let's." Zim growls, all beast, and finding it somewhat frustrating. The old crow has managed to surpass him on his first try, so unfair.
Red screeches at them defensively, it's a warning, but he has nothing to back it up. He's out matched and he knows it. Worse still, Razor has already backed him up into a corner; there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. This final moment was to be his last, and his challengers knew it.
"Tallest Red, you have been relieved of your posted." Razor spoke. Again he knows tradition is useless in Red's case, but he feels the need to follow it just the same. Perhaps a part of him fears that the act of just brutally killing the rogue will cause him to really snap. "You have been sentenced to death for your crimes against the collective, a fellow Amon, and the universe as a whole."
"Any last words?" Zim hissed.
Red laughed, shocking them both. "I hate you." He growled, but for once his anger was not solely on Zim.
Zim and Razor lifted their claws for the final blow and struck as one, slashing Red on either side of his neck. The former Tallest died before he hit the ground, finally his reign of terror was over.
For a moment, there is silence, neither of them could believe it. Perhaps they thought at any moment Red would rise up and finish them off. He never did and moments later all the metal barriers and doors rose around them.
"Lockdown procedures are no longer in effect." Tesi's voice rang out around them. "The threat has been neutralized, I repeat Tallest Red has been neutralized…."
It was as if Zim could finally breathe, like he had been holding his breath since he and his friends first started this impossible fight. He remembered the odds that were stacked against them, how impossible the task felt from the very beginning. For it to be all over now…it felt so unreal, too good to be true.
Razor placed a hand on his shoulder already shifted back to normal. "Welcome home Zim." He said.
Zim allowed those words to wash over him suddenly realizing that his partner was right to say these words. Zim had been banished from the collective not once but twice since his failure in the first Operation Impending Doom. However, he was Tallest now, which meant he was officially back, a member of the collective once more. "You too." He told Razor, shifting back as well.
Razor smiled. "Tell me that when we reach Irk." Zim's smile widen he too could not wait for that. He had been away from his home world for too long, he could only imagine how Razor must feel. Suddenly his face falls as he realizes the truth, going to Irk meant leaving here. It meant leaving Gaz, leaving his friends, and possibly never coming back.
Razor could see his thoughts as they were clear as day. "Of course we'll have to clean our mess up here first." He added. "Could takes months, years even." He sighed. "Then we'll have to clean up the other planets we Conquered, I'm sure your human friends would love to help with that, and well that could take even longer."
Zim laughed as he realized his distress. "You may die before we ever get to go home you old crow."
Razor chuckled. "And I would die a happy Irken." He assured him. "Come lets go check on your friend and the others."
Zim nodded as they existed the throne room in search of his friends.
(Back with Gaz…)
She knew she hadn't been gone that long, and yet as her ship touched down to the Earth's surface it felt like eons. Gaz stepped out of her ship just outside the castle, it was no longer on lock down, and still it was well guarded.
Several drones stood guard, there human companions had gone inside to congratulate the new Tallest. Something she and the others were hoping to do themselves, Miz and the other Amons take the lead as they exit their own ships and head for the entrance to the palace.
"Halt, state your business." A done cuts off their path.
Lard Nar looks ready to argue, but Miz holds up a hand.
"We are here to extend our congratulations to the new Tallest." She told the drone. "And to officially announce our return to the Collective."
The drone seems to buzz with excitement. "Very good please proceed with your party."
"Thank you." Miz address the drone and they are on their way, passing the small detail of drones and entering the castle.
"We must allow the drones to do their jobs." Miz told them. "It will take a lot of hard work to fix the damage. Until everything gets sorted out all drones and brains will be on guard, Red and Purple had many supports in our ranks. Until they know the new leaders of Irk are safe; Zim and Razor will be well protected.
Lard Nar nodded his understanding, of course some Irkens may not want to change their ways. They had to be careful who they allowed close to their new leaders.
Gaz tensed, suddenly wanting to ensure Zim was okay, to physically hold him in her arms and she would.
And when she did, she vowed to never let him go again.
(Back with Dib…)
"Owe Rach I think that's enough!" Dib declared.
If Rachel heard, she paid no mind. She had been tenting to Dib since he showed up and showed signs of stopping soon. Even as Tesi declared Zim's victory and everyone began to celebrate around them, Rachel kept on treating him.
"Seriously I'm fine Rach really." Dib tried to get her to stop.
Finally she did, falling in his arms, crying excessively. "You could have died, you're so reckless; the both of you are."
"We won didn't we?" Zim's voice broke through the room and everyone turned to the door.
"My Tallest!" Kazar was the first to try and shoot up to his feet. The other Amons tried as well.
"No, its fine, you must rest." Zim assured them.
"Took you long enough space boy." Dib joked. "I actually had time to get comfortable."
"Comfortable?" Zim scoffed. "Must be nice. Typical human taking it easy."
"Typical Irken taking forever to complete one mission!" Dib shot back.
Everyone looked from Zim, to Dib and back to Zim, it was funny really. They actually thought the two would change. Here was this kid who talked to one of the Tallest of Irk like he was his equal instead of some lesser human.
Razor however, understood. It didn't matter what everyone else thought. In Zim's eyes this boy was an equal. "You must be Dib." He holds out a hand to shake his. "Gaz's brother unit Yes?"
Dib smiles and shakes the elder Irken's hand. "Yes it's a pleasure to meet you."
"Razor, second eldest Amon and Tallest now apparently." Razor chimed. He could already tell he liked this kid, he could also tell he was going to see a lot of him in the coming days.
The reason why soon came rushing in.
Gaz bulldozed through them all and into the room and tacked Zim on the spot, not caring about subtlety or how weak she must look to everyone else.
Zim barely has to strength to stand up. Could you imagine if he had fell right now in front of his fellow Amons? Him, the new Tallest of Irk leveled by a mere human girl in combat boots. Well, he could and it would have been an embarrassment that no one in the room would ever let him live down. "Told you I'd be fine."
"Barely." Gaz argued.
"At least I can stand." Zim scoffed gesturing to Dib.
Gaz looked to her brother and scowled. "You idiot!"
"What? I can stand!" Dib argued. However, he moves to do so and has to quickly sit back down as blood begins to rush to his head.
"Can't leave you alone for five seconds." Gaz began to lecture.
"Silly human biting off more than he can chew." Zim teased.
"And who promised to keep him safe!?" Gaz growled, her anger turning towards him.
"Ah busted!" Dib yelled back.
Zim gave Gaz a nervous smile. "Did I ever tell you how beautiful you are when you're angry with me?" He asked.
Kazar and the other snicker quietly at the display. Obviously seeing the new Tallest get lectured by Gaz was quite amusing to them.
Razor laughed as well, oh yes they would be seeing a lot of each other indeed.
And they did, weeks following the defeat of Red the Irkens where now neck deep in the process of cleaning up the planet. New representation for all the human colonies or countries as Zim called them had been appointed and Razor and Zim had met with several of them. Discussing terms and agreements and their plants for the planet's repairs.
Zim had promised the Earth would be in a better condition than they found it in. Years of global warming and over use of resources completely erased. Razor thought such promises were perhaps too generous, but he understood the need to do right by the ones they had so clearly wronged.
Still if they made such promises for the humans they'd have to do so for all the planets they had wronged.
Again Zim doesn't see the problem, in fact he looks to be excited for the challenge.
"Of course you." Razor teased. "You are young with plenty of time on your hands."
They had just finished speaking with the new head Russia, a tough group to hold a conversation with. The humans as a whole had reluctantly agreed to allow the Irkens to stay and help clean up their mess. Still, not all humans were happy they hadn't just picked up and left.
Dib couldn't say he blamed them, having healed from his injuries from the most part, and arguing excessively with his father. He and Gaz had been allowed to go with Zim, of course Professor Membrane had been reluctant, but he also understood their need to see this through.
He had wanted to join them, but with the absence of the president and most of the US government. Everyone was looking to him and his respectful and political back ground to help them. Gaz and Dib were not surprised. Their Father was a respected scientist known all over the world, with his law degree and political influence who better to be the next president?
It was funny how their family had gone back to the norm pretty quickly. With Professor Membrane busier than ever it was just Dib and Gaz on their own, again. Okay so that wasn't entirely true as Dib was quickly reminded.
"Stop moving so slow!" Tak growled. The Irken female was forced to draw Dib out a day dream every five seconds.
Dib smiled, Tak had surprised him by announcing that she would be joining him in his quest to fix the planet. That's right she actually said she would be join him. Not them, and not Zim! Her words actually made him blush. He still wasn't sure if there was anything going on between them, or if there ever would be, but he was looking forward to fining out. "Sorry it's just so amazing." He finally told Tak, running to catch up with her and the group. "I always wanted to travel to places like this."
"Please you've seen one place on this planet you've seen them all." Tak whined. The harshness has left her voice though. She too is struggling to understand what she feels for the human beside her, and like Dib she wants to find out.
"Seeing the world is nice and all." Mark was saying. "But can we stay put for the night? All this flying and time zone hopping is starting to mess with me." He added as James nodded his agreement. The two cousins had also been allowed to join them without much trouble. Since both boys were turning 18 soon they were practically adults. Rachel however, had a tougher time convincing her mother, but in the end they both agreed they would join the cause.
"I don't see why not." Razor answered. Usually an Irken would soldier on, but even they needed to rest from time to time, and he and Zim were due for a recharge.
"Enjoying the scenery?" Zim mused.
"Irk no." Razor admitted. "Too hot and green for my taste."
"Well living on an asteroid for hundreds of years will do that to you I guess." Scamooch whispered lowly bringing up the rear. He had actually been surprised when Zim had asked him to join them on their quest around the Earth. He knew the Amon had promised they'd have forever together, he just didn't take him too literal. He thought Zim would just visit him every now and then, just check in from time to time.
General Kazar said he should be grateful, to be chosen by one of the Tallest as their pupil was a big deal, and he better not mess it up this time. Scamooch laughed remembering it all now.
Zim gives him a swat for his disrespectful commit alerting him that he had not been as quiet as he thought. Their eyes meet and the cadet offers a sly smile.
Zim looks stern, but there is laughter in his eyes. Perhaps he is to blame for the cadet's remark, he is always teasing the older Amon himself.
"I'm starving, what's for dinner?" Gaz asked.
"We should have a traditional Russian meal." Rachel's mom suggested.
"I'd kill for some chicken nuggets." Rachel admitted.
Her mother gives her a look. "Sweetie you can have chicken nuggets any day, this is your chance to soak up some culture."
"Chicken nuggets is culture." Rachel said. "American culture."
"Should we tell them that America still technically does not exist?" Scamooch asked Zim.
Of course it was true, Irk had renamed plenty places when they were in rule, and with little to no surviving rulers left who's to say who owned what anymore. Still, Zim wasn't barking up that tree. "Do you have a death wish?" He asked him.
"No." Scamooch answered.
"Then I'd keep that one to myself." He warned.
Dib laughed it was crazy here he was in a group mixed with humans and Irkens arguing over what to have for dinner. He would have never dreamed up this kind of future when he was just starting out all those years ago. No eleven year old Dib would have been narrow minded and declared that all Irkens must die.
"Crazy isn't it?" Zim asked falling in step beside him.
Razor and the others had kept moving. All but Gaz, Mark, James and finally Rachel.
"I can't believe it's finally over." Mark admitted.
"Yeah it seems only yesterday we started towards this goal." Rachel admitted. "I can't wait to get back to Zec."
It was a crazy thought, but they were all thinking the same thing, many of their friends were on Zec. Like Elma and Goalit who had just revealed to them that the last of the trash heaps in Westville were cleared out.
Zim smiled at the thought of them. He had asked Goalit if he had thought about his feels for Elma, and he said he had.
"We actually talked about it." Goalit admitted. "But we agreed it was too soon, too much work to be done." He explained. "Besides Elma feels like she's far too young for me at the moment."
Zim understood the feeling, the age gap was certainly there, but he told him he was happy for them either way, after all with the war ending they had all the time in the world. "We'll be back next week." He assured Rachel.
Rachel smiled she couldn't wait, there was still a lot to be done back at home. Not that she was surprised it was known as ground zero after all. Westville was the place where the war between humans and Irkens both started and ended. However, as immense as the task was there were already some victories to be proud of. Crystal was still struggling with the loss of Jacob, but with Jamie's help she had turn her grief into hope for the Irken Worshipers.
Thanks to their experience in the prison and Jacob's help understanding the brainwashing programing. The Irken worshipers were now starting the long road to rehabilitation. It tuned out all of them lived in poverty soon after the Great War. Becoming Minions and later allowing themselves to be programed was their only ticket to a better life.
One of them is even showing signs of early recovery. Megan has been very cooperated since the beginning, stating that if the Irkens have accepted Zim as their leader then he is simply that and that's just the way it is. Jamie and Crystal are weary to trust her completely for obvious reasons, but she did enlighten them with several answers. For example the prisoners were being programed because they were testing the programing for controlling the human population on a larger scale.
It was supposed to be a permanent solution to the problem the mind control collars tried to solve. Not just for the humans though, but all the slaves of the Irken Machine!
Which was a scary thought when Rachel allowed herself to think about it.
"Then what?" James asked breaking though her thoughts. He took her hand as their eyes met. Finally with the war behind them they were able to continue their relationship where it left off.
