JAPAN – 1607 TEMPLE OF THE SHIRI RYU NINJAS

The Shiri Ryu were founded by a great warrior named Shiru after Out World's Champion Shang Tsung was defeated in the seventh tournament by the Great Kung Lao. Now the Ryu Clan of Ninjas is ruled by Grand Master Hanzo Hasashi.

Hanzo is in his private meditation room, when the sky suddenly darkens, and he hears a thunder clap. He opens his eyes and walks out of his room. He walks up a hall to the foyer of the temple. When he gets outside his warriors are unconscious. The air is electrified and there is a man whose face is obscured by a conical, a Chinese style hat. The man is leaning against the well drinking water.

Hanzo draws his sword, "Who are you?" Hanzo cautiously asks taking a fighting stance.

"Your men are not dead Hanzo Hasashi."

"How do you know my name?"

"I am Raiden…" When he says his name the sky rumbles with thunder and flashes with lightning He raises his head revealing his eyes that glow with lightning. "I know many things…You bare a Dragon mark on your wrist."

Hanzo looks down at his wrist, "The sign of a chosen one for Mortal Kombat."

"Yes…Your ancestors fought in Mortal Kombat alongside the Great Kung Lao."

"And they lost that tournament if memory serves."

"You are a great warrior. Come with me to the Temple of Light."

He shakes his head, "No…I am to pass the sword of the Grandmaster to my brother and take a wife."

"Life has many paths Hanzo Hasashi…Sometimes the rejection of one's destiny brings great sorrow."

"The love of a woman and starting a family does not bring sorrow."

Raiden stands up and walks over to him, "You will not fight to protect Earth-realm?"

"I have spilled enough blood for two life times."

Raiden nods, "As you wish."

He steps back raises his hand and vanishes in a bolt of lightning. The skies clear and the place where Raiden was standing has a burn mark from the lightning. His men wake up and resume their duties as if nothing happened.

10YRS LATER

Hanzo has been married for 10yrs, he has three children with his wife Harumi. A nine, year old son, a six, year old daughter, and a baby son of eight months. He still lives at the temple with his brother Ryu Hasashi, the Grandmaster. Hanzo trains young recruits to be Ninja for the Shiri Ryu clan. His son watches on the side as he oversees a training session. The new recruits are twenty men. Five men in a row across and four men back.

"Stop!" Hanzo commands. The recruits are performing synchronized punches. They stop in mid punch of the left hand as Hanzo corrects one of the recruit's stance. Meanwhile Ryu is in his meditation room, when it suddenly grows cold. He opens his eyes as there is a rumbling sound and flashes of purple light. A magical doorway opens and out walks a Ninja of the Lin Kuei.

"The Lin Kuei…You dare break the treaty?"

"I dare!" The masked ninja replies and freezes Ryu in ice.

"Grandmaster?" A servant quarries entering the meditation room. The woman screams as the blue dressed ninja shatters the frozen body. The servant dies from a thrown ninja star to the head.

Back in the training dojo more portals open to Lin Kuei Ninjas. "We are under attack!" Hanzo yells, "Defend yourselves!"

Two ninjas attack Hanzo. He steps into one grabbing his sword and uses it to impale the ninja on the right. Then he spins around and decapitates the other Ninja. Hanzo runs and leaps into the back of another ninja breaking his spine. Then he pulls out his kunai, and uses it to kill two more ninja at long range. Then he impales another ninja on the spear and pulls him close with the rope. Hanzo buries his sword in the man's head.

Then he hears a scream, "No…Hurami!"

Several Ninjas die trying to protect Hurami as she runs through the temple with her children. They make it to a secret passageway. Escape seems possible, but when they open the door the Leader of the attacking Ninjas is waiting. His son Hitoshi leaps into a flying kick and hits the Leader in the chest. His attack has no affect.

"Perfect technique boy…Your father has taught you well…Now die with honor!" He picks him up by the throat and he starts to freeze. Then the Leader shatters Hitoshi's neck and the body breaks apart when it hits the ground. One of the ninjas protecting Hurami leaps at the Leader to fight him, as the door closes.

Hurami runs back up the tunnel with her last guard, daughter and baby son. Behind them the door freezes and shatters. Her guard is frozen and then the floor is frozen causing them all to slip and slide the rest of the way up the tunnel. "Hurami!"

"Hanzo!"

He meets them at the exit helping them off the frozen floor of the secret passage. That is when Itzu is frozen as well. "No!" Hurami yells.

"Who are you?" Hanzo angrily asks.

The Leader removes his mask, "I am Sub Zero."
