pittsacee: I do not know.
-8th of Rain's Hand, 4th Era 202-
Rahgol was in a very annoyed mood as he followed Delphine and a old man named Esbern to Karthspire where a temple known as Sky Haven Temple was located. Apparently this temple may hold something that is the key to defeating Alduin.
Rahgol had come to Riverwood and met up with Delphine, telling her of what happened at the Embassy while not mentioning Alduin's appearance there as that was his business not hers, then Delphine sent him to Riften to find Esbern, who was also a member of the Blades. Since then, Rahgol has been in a very annoyed mood, having someone tell him to do things like she can't, like she's disabled. She probably gets a kick out of ordering a Dragonborn around.
If Rahgol had his way he'd just ditch Delphine and go do this crap himself. Hell, he was strongly considering killing Delphine and Esbern and going on his way to Sky Haven Temple, but he won't...not until they've outlived their usefulness.
Right now, Rahgol ducked an arrow and shot an ice spike towards some of the Nord and Breton savages, and they fell to the ground with a loud thud. Delphine ran towards one of them and with a clean slice she decapitated one.
"Where is Sky Haven Temple, Esbern?" Rahgol growled out as he impaled a Forsworn with Dawnbreaker then ripped the blade out and kicked the body into the water.
"Look for a cave behind the Forsworn camp." Esbern said. Rahgol noticed four savages running towards him.
"Duck!" Rahgol yelled and Esbern did just that. "FUS RO DAH!" The four soldiers got blasted away against the nearby rocks. They fell to the ground and they didn't move anymore. "That takes care of that." Rahgol sensed danger and quickly moved his head to the side to avoid a Ice Spike going through it. He looked to see a Forsworn Shamen throwing spells.
Rahgol grabbed his Dragonbone bow and got an arrow ready, one eye closed before he fired the arrow which got the Forsworn right in between the eyes, causing the Dragonborn to smirk at that.
The trio began to search around the camp, and after a while they found a cave. They decided to head in it and when they walked a bit through it, a Forsworn Briarheart stood in their way but it was quickly dealt with. They walked further through the narrow cave and finally they saw quite some impressive stonework in front of us.
"This looks promising." Delphine said.
"Yes, definitely early Akaviri stonework here." Esbern agreed as they walked up the stairs and noticed three pillars with symbols in front of them. Next to them was an open bridge.
"We've got to get this bridge down." Delphine said.
"These pillars might have something to do with it." Rahgol muttered as he looked at the three pillars, the symbols, then looked at the bridge before humming and rearranged the pillars into the matching symbols, which caused the bridge to lower.
They walked further and we then came across a room with the same symbols on tiles on the floor.
"This looks like a trap." Rahgol said. He noticed the Dragonborn symbol on some of the tiles and decided to quietly walk on them, towards a chain. He pulled on it and they heard a click sound. Then they heard nearby bridges going down and they then crossed them. Finally they arrived in a large room with magnificent architecture. There was a wall with a large head carved on it. Also, there was some kind of circle on the ground in front of it.
"Wonderful! Remarkably well-preserved too…" Esbern said. Rahgol didn't agree or disagree, he didn't really care much but even he had to admit the work was well done. Esbern then walked towards the circle and he spoke again. "Ah… here's the blood seal. Another of the last Akaviri arts. No doubt triggered by… well, blood. Your blood, Dragonborn."
Rahgol narrowed his eyes but walked forward, taking off his gauntlet then grabbing a Dragonbone dagger before carefully cutting his hand and allowed the blood to drop onto the seal. It glowed in response and the head moved upwards, revealing an entrance.
You did it Dragonborn!" Delphine stated. She then motioned him to come forward. "After you, Dragonborn. You should have the honor of being the first to set foot in Sky Haven Temple."
Rahgol nodded and opened the door leading into the temple. He immediately noticed that it was dark and full of dust but his attention was on some amazing stone carved pictures on the wall. Esbern spoke up behind him.
"Fascinating! Original Akaviri bas-reliefs… almost entirely intact! You can see that the Akaviri craftsmen were beginning to embrace the more flowing Nordic style…"
Rahgol walked on ahead and paused when he saw a wall with carvings on it, Dragons and Nords. He figured this was Alduin's Wall. Rahgol walked up to it and placed a hand on it, running his hands along it. He paused when he got to the carving of Alduin in her rule and almost lovingly caressed it before lowering his arm as Esbern and Delphine entered the room.
"Shor's Bones, here it is! Alduin's Wall… so well preserved… I've never seen a finer example of early second Era Akaviri sculptural relief…" Esbern said in wonder.
"What does it say?" Rahgol asked curiously. Esbern looked at the left of the wall, and spoke.
"Look, here's Alduin. This panel goes back during the beginning of time, when Alduin and the Dragon Cult ruled over Skyrim." During his talk he moved very slowly to the right. "Here, the humans rebel against their Dragon overlords… the legendary Dragon War. Alduin's defeat is the centerpiece of the wall. You see, here he-" Esbern coughed a bit. "she is falling from the sky. The Nord tongues, masters of the Voice, are arrayed against her."
Delphine then spoke."So, does it show how, how they defeated her? Isn't that why we're here." Rahgol gave her an annoyed look, not for her disregarding all the work put into the carving as he really didn't care, but for how she was so desperate for the death of all Dragons including Alduin.
"Patience my dear, the Akaviri wer not straight forward people. Everything is couched in allegory and mythic symbolism." Esbern looked more closely towards something coming from the Nords' mouths. "Yes, yes, this here, coming from the mouths of the Nord heroes, this is the Akaviri symbol for 'Shout'. But there's no way to know what Shout is meant."
Rahgol frowned at that. A Shout was used to defeat Alduin at the end of the Dragon War?
"You mean they used a Shout to defeat Alduin? You're sure?" Delphine asked.
"Oh yes. Presumably something rather specific to Dragons, or even Alduin herself. Remember, this is where they recorded all they knew of Alduin and her return."
Delphine sighed angrily. "So we're looking for a Shout then? Damn it!" She looked at Rahgol who stood silent, watching with his arms crossed. "Have you heard of such a thing? A Shout that can knock a Dragon out of the sky?"
"No." Rahgol said, but he had a feeling there was one who could give him answers to this. "But I know who may have the answers to this."
Delphine frowned. "The Greybeards? You are probably right though, but I was hoping to avoid involving them in this, but it seems we have no choice."
That's not who Rahgol was thinking but he wasn't going to tell Delphine who he was speaking of. "You have a problem with the Greybeards?" Rahgol asked, a little sharply since they did teach him when he lived on High Hrothgar during his childhood.
"If they had their way, you'd be nothing but sit up on their mountain with them and talk to the sky, or whatever it is they do. The Greybeards are so afraid of power that they won't use it. Think about it. Have they tried to stop the Civil War, or done anything about Alduin? No. And they're afraid of you, of your power. Trust me, there's no need to be afraid. Think of Tiber Septim. Do you think he'd have founded the Empire if he listened to the Greybeards?"
"Don't know, and I really don't care." Rahgol said coldly which surprised her. "They helped me when I was a boy and lost. If there's anyone I trust to give me answers to this, it's them."
"Good. The Greybeards can teach you a lot, but don't let them turn you away from your destiny. You're Dragonborn, and you're the only one who can stop Alduin." Delphine said.
Rahgol rolled his eyes. "I make my own destiny. I don't give a shit about anyone else, nobody tells me what to do and how I should live my life as a Dragonborn, not even the Blades. I'll talk to the Greybeards and see what they know."
"And if they know nothing of this Shout?" Delphine asked as Rahgol walked away, the Dragonborn speaking without pausing or turning around.
"Then I'll take Alduin on without it..."

Rahgol arrived at High Hrothgar after many days of travelling, and entered the monastery that he had called home for most of his life up until he left for the first time. Rahgol looked around for Arngeir but was able to find him since he was in the middle of the main hall meditating.
"Ah, Rahgol, what can I do for you?" Arngeir asked kindly.
"I need to see Paarthurnax." Rahgol said shortly. "I need to know if he knows of the Shout that defeated Alduin."
Arngeir's eyes widened. "Where did you learn of that? Who have you been talking to?" He asked angrily.
"It was recorded on Alduin's Wall." Rahgol said.
"The Blades! Of course. They specialize in meddling with things they barely understand. Their reckless arrogance knows no bounds. They have always sought to turn the Dragonborn from the path of wisdom. Have you learned nothing from us? Would you simple be a tool in the hands of the Blades, to be used for their own purposes?"
Rahgol scoffed. "I'd sooner become like Miraak before being used as some pawn of the Blades. This is important, I need to see Paarthurna as he is the only one who can help me. I can't fully understand why I am Dragonborn and he always has the answers for me."
Arngeir stared at him before he sighed and nodded. "Master Paarthurnax did tells us to allow you to see him upon your return here. He is waiting for you at the Throat of the World. Come, we will teach you the Shout that will open the way towards Paarthurnax."
Rahgol followed the Greybeards out into the courtyard stood in front of the stairs with the powerful winds behind the gate where the stairs are leading towards. Arngeir then whispered the words 'Lok Vah Koor', on the ground, and he then gave Rahgol the meaning of it, which entered his mind and heart when absorbing the energy.
"Sky, Spring, Summer…" Rahgol muttered. Arngeir spoke.
"This is your final gift from us, Dragonborn. Use it well." Rahgol nodded. "Clear Skies will blow away the mist, but only for a time. The path to Paarthurnax is perilous, not to be embarked upon lightly. Keep moving, stay focused on your goal, and you will reach the summit."
Rahgol walked up the stairs, towards the barrier of mist and powerful winds.
"LOK VAH KOOR!" The Shout shook the Earth but did the job of clearing away the mist. Rahgol smiled a little and walked on.
Rahgol had always wondered how long it would take to get to the top of the mountain by foot as Rahgol had gotten up there quick due to Paarthurnax carrying him up there on his back. But he sees why the Dragon wouldn't allow that, not just because rahgol was too young for the Clear Skies Shout, but because he would not survive the harsh winds.
When Rahgol finally arrived at the summit, he was in an open area with a broken Word Wall just a bit further. He also felt something weird from a spot next to the Word Wall, something old, very old.
A smile came onto his face when he heard the roar of a Dragon and looked up to see a greyish brown Dragon with broken horns and tattered skin landing in front of him. The Dragon's expression becoming soft as soon as he laid eyes on Rahgol.
"Dii kul lost daal wah zey." Paarthurnax said softly, a sort of fatherly smile on his scaly features. Rahgol held in some tears at the words as he walked towards the Dragon that saved his life, the one he considered a father.
"Geh, bormah. Zu'u lost daal." Rahgol replied as he placed his hands on the muzzle of Paarthurnax who rumbled in content, closing his eyes as Rahgol placed his forehead against the snout of the old Dragon. "Zu'u praag hin aak ahrk frey."
"Just as you sought my warmth to warm up when you were cold as a boy." Paarthurnax chuckled.
"Has this old mountain been well for you?" Rahgol asked with concern but the old Dragon just chuckled again as he laid down, curling his tail around Rahgol when he sat down and leaned into Paarthurnax's side.
"I am well, dii kul. Now tell me, Druv dreh hi yah dii aak ahrk frey?"
"I need to learn the Dragonrend Shout." Rahgol said, with Paarthurnax not even looking surprised at this.
"So, you have found out about what you are." Paarthurnax said, stating it more than asking it. "But patience. There are formalities which must be observed, at the first meeting of two of the Dov. By long tradition, the elder speaks first. Hear my Thu'um! Feel it in your bones! Match it, if you are Dovahkiin!" Paarthurnax looked at the Word Wall. "YOL TOOR SHUL!"
A large and powerful looking stream of fire erupted out of the old Dragon's mouth. When the flames died down, Rahgol saw a carved word on the Word Wall. He began to absorb the word.
"A gift Dovahkiin. Shul, feel the power of the sun that you blast out of your mouth." He said. He then gave Rahgol the meaning of Shul.
"Fire, Inferno, Sun… Yol Toor Shul…" Rahgol muttered.
"Now, show me what you can do. Greet me not as mortal, but as Dovah!"
Rahgol breathed in deeply. "YOL TOOR SHUL!" A barrage of flames that still didn't look like how a Dragon would spit fire washed over the old Dragon. He heard hisses in pain, but then he began to smile.
"Ah, yes! Sossedov los mul. The Dragonblood runs strong in you. However, you still have much to learn with your mastery of the Thu'um. Something I will teach you in time. Now, you come to seek the Dragonrend Shout?"
"Not just that, but to see you again." Rahgol said with a smile at his adoptive father. "I have missed our conversations, the lessons and stories you would tell me."
Paarthurnax chuckled. "Stories that were told to make you sleep as a boy and they worked. But not only did you wish to see me again, but you also desire a weapon against Alduin?" Rahgol nodded. "You have met her, yes? Tasted the power of her Thu'um?"
Rahgol nodded again. "Yes. It is greater than my own. Alduin...she's actually saved my live a few times since we met nearly a year ago."
"Hi lost ofaal ek kusah, ni vahk truk wah vinal." Paarthurnax said in a knowing tone.
"Yeah, her interest in killing me." Rahgol said almost bitterly at how he and Alduin had to kill each other...especially since he had come to terms with the fact he was in love with her.
Paarthurnax stared at him knowingly, like he knew what kind of inner debate he was having and his true feelings when it comes to Alduin. "Perhaps, you are her destined nemesis after all. However, I am afraid I do not know the Thu'um you seek. It cannot be know to me, my son. The Joor created it as a weapon against the Dov, the Dragons. Our minds cannot comprehend its concepts."
"How can I learn it then?" Rahgol asked.
"Drem, all in good time." Paarthurnax said and Rahgol knew he had to listen as he always did when the ancient Dragon said those words. First, a question for you. Why do you want to learn this Thu'um?"
"To defeat Alduin."
"Yes… Alduin, the oldest, the elder sister. Gifted, grasping and troublesome as is so often the case with firstborn. However, Alduin wasn't always like that. I know, because I was created by Akatosh as the first normal Dovah. Alduin is an Eyra, or Aedra in your tongue, unlike the rest of the Dov. She is born from Akatosh and Mara, and during my childhood with her, Mara told us stories about love and passion, friendship and honesty. However, she was lonely. None of the Eyra even looked at her. She is beautiful in both aspects, be it Dovah form, her mortal form or in between, but they were more busy with fighting each other. It was their fault she became like that. But why, why do you want to stop Alduin?"
Rahgol was shocked to learn of that deep part of Alduin's personal life. He wondered what her mortal form looked like, wondering if there was anyway for him to be with her...even if he knew he had to kill her or risk the world, even if he didn't really care for the world.
"I'm 'destined' to stop Alduin." Rahgol said with a little disgust at how his destiny and fate is planned out. Paarthurnax nodded thoughtfully.
"True, the prophecy. But it tells what may be, not what should be. Qostiid sahlo aak. Just because you can do a thing, does not always mean you should. Do you have no better reason than acting for destiny? Are you nothing more than a plaything of dez… of fate?"
"I make my own destiny." Rahgol said as he looked down and clenched his fists. "When I found out I was Dragonborn...I wasn't happy. I wasn't happy to have the responsibility of such a role placed on my shoulders, knowing what being Dragonborn means. And then I learned of the prophecy of me and Alduin, our...connection."
Paarthurnax nodded. "Geh, til los gevothend nix hi. You are... How can i put it? Two sides of the same coin. Your destinies are intertwined with each other. Maybe you can show her the thing she so desperately needs."
"If she can change." Rahgol muttered.
"Alduin is by far the wisest and most far-seeing of us. But even she has major flaws… Have you ever wondered why I live at the top of this mountain?" Paarthurnax suddenly asked, causing Rahgol to look at him and shake his head. "This was the very spot where Alduin was defeated by the Ancient Tongues. Vahrukt unslaad. Perhaps none but me remember how she was defeated."
"How? How was she defeated?" Rahgol asked curiously. "Three mortals couldn't have easily killed her as I doubt they had the strength or power to kill a Goddess, especially the Firstborn of Akatosh and Mara."
Paarthurnax nodded. "Indeed, but Alduin was not truly defeated either. If she was, you would not be here today, seeking to defeat her. The Nords of those days used the Dragonrend Shout to cripple Alduin. But this was not enough. Ek mulaag unslaad. It was the Kel, the Elder Scroll. They used it to, cast her adrift on the Currents of Time."
"And she ended up here, in this time. Into the future." Rahgol finished, finally realizing how she had appeared in this age after thousands of years since the end of the Dragon War. "You once told me about the Elder Scrolls."
"Yes, an artefact from outside time. It does not exist, but it has always existed. Rah wahlaan. They are… fragments of Kel, Elder Scroll, as you name them, they have often been used for prophecy. Yes, your prophecy comes from an Elder Scroll. But this is only a small part of their power. Zofaas suleyk. Only the gods can acquire the secrets of these ancient things." Paarthurnax said.
"So, to learn the Dragonrend Shout...I need to find the Elder Scroll." Rahgol stated more than asked but the ancient Dragon nodded to confirm his statement.
"If you brought that Kel back here, to the Tiid Ahraan, the Time Wound… With the Elder Scroll that was used to break Time, you may be able to, cast yourself back, towards the other end of the break. You could learn Dragonrend from those who created it."
"Where can I find it?" Rahgol asked.
"Krosis. No. I know little of what has passed below in the long years I have lived here. You are likely better informed than I." Paarthurnax said.
Rahgol grunted a little as he thought over places that could help him learn of the Elder Scroll's location before he thought of one. "The College of Winterhold. They may have something."
"Trust your instincts my son. Your blood will show you the way."
Rahgol nodded and turned to leave but paused and looked back at the mighty Dragon. "When I return, Elder Scroll or not, I'd like you to teach me on training my Thu'um."
"I will teach you, I hope you have the patience this time." Paarthurna rumbled a chuckle as he watched his adoptive son leave...
And that's it for this chapter. We meet Paarthurnax, Rahgol's adoptive father, and the one who has taught him a lot in his childhood especially the Dragon Tongue before he even learned of his nature as a Dragonborn.
Also the reason I skipped the journey to Riften followed by Esbern's rescue is because...I wanted to plus I really hated doing the missions for the Blades even if they progressed the storyline. Honestly, even I could see that the Blades were trying to make the Dragonborn a loyal puppet, and I was only about 12 or 13 when I first played the game...
