Disclaimer: I don't own Almanzo, Laura, or any of the other characters mentioned. I only own the fic.
Author's Note: This is my first Little House on the Prairie based story. I love Laura and Almanzo's relationship on the television series. So I thought to write a sweet oneshot. I'm pretty content with how this turned out. Let me know what you think of my first Lhotp fic.
Laura stood in the kitchen. She stood in front of her small kitchen sink washing the breakfast dishes. Little strands of her brown hair were escaping from her neatly tied up hair bun. The loose strands of her hair didn't bother her, as she would tidy up her hair once her chore was finished. It took her about twenty minutes to wash the dishes. After Laura finished washing the last dish, she proceeded to put the dishes away. She had half a mind to let the dishes sit out but she was going into town with her husband, Almanzo and their daughter, Rose. As such, she wanted the house spick and span before she went into town. After her chore was finished, Laura walked into her quaint living area. She gently picked up Rose out of her high chair. The child giggled as her mother carried her into the bedroom. Laura laid Rose on the bed. She took a few minutes to change her daughter's diaper.
"There. Now doesn't that feel better?" Laura gently cooed.
Rose giggled again in response to her mother. After a second, Laura set Rose up and let her play with some toys on the bed. Laura took a few minutes to wash her daughter's dirty diaper. After she was finished, she walked back to the bedroom and started fixing her hair so she looked presentable. As she was fixing her hair, Laura noticed one of her remembrance books sitting on her nightstand.
"Oh what's this doing out? I better put it back in my trunk." Laura thought to herself.
She picked up the brown journal and walked over to her trunk. She knelt down and gently opened the wooden lid. Laura neatly placed the remembrance book in the trunk. As she was about to close the trunk, she noticed another one of her remembrance books laying in the trunk. She gently picked up the book. She especially took note of the letters: LI + AW, written on the front cover.
"These initials are what I carved into the sweetheart tree. This book must contain entries from when I first met Almanzo."
Laura listened outside. She could hear that her husband was still outside doing his chores.
"Almanzo's still doing his morning chores. I still have time. Maybe I'll take a quick peek at this book." Laura thought.
Laura nodded to herself and stood up, still holding her remembrance book in her arms. She walked back over to her bed. She saw Rose still contently playing with her toys. Laura smiled to herself and sat on the edge of the bed. She laid the little book gently in her lap and carefully opened to the first page. She silently read the first entry that was written.
Today was my first day back to school. Actually it will probably be my last year of school since I'm almost sixteen. The first day was good, for the most part. After school, my new teacher, Miss. Wilder, introduced me to her brother. Her brother's name is: Almanzo Wilder.
Laura looked up from what she was reading. She smiled to herself when she read her husband's name. She looked back down at the entry and continued to read.
Almanzo is so nice and he is such a gentleman. We even have special nicknames for each other. He calls me "Beth" and I call him "Manly". I love him and I know that he's the man that I'm going to marry.
Laura chuckled to herself as she finished reading the entry. She remembered the feelings she felt during her first meeting with Almanzo. Those feelings of love were something she'd always hold onto. Laura flipped to the next page in her journal. She frowned when she saw the next entry.
That Nellie Oleson! How dare she interfere and invite Almanzo over for supper?! I just know she asked him just to try and make me jealous. I wouldn't be surprised if Mrs. Olseon had someting to do with this as well! Just wait I'll figure out some way to get back at her.
Laura stopped reading. She remembered all too well what happened next. She remembered how embarrassed she felt when her Ma found out that she put cyenne pepper on the chicken instead of cinnamon. She also remembered how she was made to apologize to both Nellie and Almanzo. Laura quickly flipped past the entry she was currently reading. She wanted to erase the whole 'cyenne pepper chicken' incident from her mind.
Laura thumbed through the journal entries. The next entry she stopped at was a little better but it still made her frown a bit.
Today I must complete a sewing job for Christy Norton. I find her rather snippy. Ma says to not let my personal feelings get in the way of doing a good job. I'll be glad when I give her the completed dress. The less I have to see her, the better.
Laura rolled her eyes and kept reading further down the page.
I can't believe it! Almanzo asked that snippy Christie to accompany him to the circus show. And to make matters worse she called me a little girl! I'll show her that I'm not the little girl she thinks I am.
Laura rolled her eyes again. Even though Christie was long gone, seeing her name written out made her groan in disgust. The young woman quickly flipped the pages trying to find a certain entry. When she found what she was looking for, she smiled with glee, as she already knew what happened that day.
Today was so exciting but also a little frightening. Albert and I got to be clowns in the circus show that was in town. And the best part was what happened when I was doing my part of the routine. The routine was simple. I would run around, weaving in between the audience's seats, chasing another clown that I met while helping with the setup, with a bucket in my hands. The audience thought that there was water in the bucket but we really used confetti. So the clown and a few audience members he was standing behind got covered with confetti. The second time, however, we filled the bucket with water. I skillfully chased the clown over to where Almanzo and Christie were sitting. The clown stood directly behind Christie. I threw the water, making sure Christie was the one that got the most drenched. The plan worked itself out perfectly. Almanzo only got wet a tiny bit but Christie got completely drenched. She was so mad that she stormed out of the circus tent. I even stole a kiss from Almanzo. He was so surprised by my sudden gesture that I'm almost glad he didn't recognize me. I'm glad Pa didn't notice that it was me but I know Ma did recognize me. I don't think she told Pa but just to be safe, I'll only write this incident here and share it with no one.
Laura looked up slightly from what she was reading, a rather loud laugh escaping from her mouth. She put her hand over her mouth to stifle her laughter a bit. She laughed about the circus incident for a few minutes. After a little bit, Laura composed herself. She turned her attention back to the book sitting in her lap. She decided to skim through the rest of the journal. As Laura was skimming through her remembrance book, she took note of a few significant entries.
She saw the time her and Albert lost the three-legged race to Almanzo and another girl he was courting at the time. On another page, she saw the time when she tried to make Almanzo jealous by pretending to like a deaf boy she was teaching sign language to. The boy's name was Daniel. Laura still regretted using that boy to suit her selfish needs. She was grateful that she made things right with Daniel so she could finish teaching him sign language.
Laura continued skimming through the contents of her journal. The rest of the entries she saw pertained to Adam and Mary and the rest of her family members. She decided to stop reading and close the book. As she was about to close her journal, she saw an entry on the very last page that intrigued her.
Today was a very special day. Today I married Almanzo Wilder. I couldn't believe it. It seemed like a dream but there I was standing in front of the man I loved, ready to say "I do". The wedding was a simple one. We held it at the blind school in Sleepy Eye. Only Ma, Pa, Adam, Mary, Hester-Sue and Eliza Jane were in attendance but it was enough. As we took our vows, I thought about everything Almanzo and I had been through and how far we've come since our first meeting. I knew now that I truly loved Almanzo and he loved me. Today I am: Laura Ingalls Wilder. And I couldn't be happier.
Laura smiled as she finished reading the last sentence on the page. She suddenly felt tears forming in the corners of her eyes. They weren't tears of sorrow but tears of joy. She thought about all the journal entries that she had read. She thought of Almanzo and how far they had come. She thought about how many trials she had already overcome with her beloved husband. She knew that there would still be trials but she knew that her faith in God would carry them through.
Laura became lost in her thoughts about the things that happened in her life so far. Suddenly, there came a call from the front door.
"Beth?!"
It was Almanzo but Laura didn't hear her husband's call as she was still deep in thought.
"Beth?!" Almanzo called out again.
This time Laura heard her husband calling from the front room. She closed her remembrance book and turned slightly towards the bedroom door.
"I'm in here!" Laura called back.
Almanzo followed Laura's voice back to their room. He saw his wife and daughter sitting on the bed.
"Beth, I'm done with my chores. Are you ready to go to town?" Almanzo asked.
Laura nodded. "Yes, I'm ready. I just need to grab my money bag." She replied.
Almanzo nodded slightly.
"Could you hold Rose while I finish getting ready?" Laura asked.
"Sure." the young man replied.
He walked over to where Rose was playing and gently picked her up in his arms.
"Come on Rosey-posie. Let's go wait for Mama." Almanzo said gently to the infant.
Rose giggled happily as her father carried her to the front room. Laura smiled gently as she watched her husband holding their daughter. After a second, Laura finished getting ready. She put her journal away and quickly grabbed her money pouch. After a few minutes, she walked to the living room.
"Alright, I'm ready to go." the young woman said.
"Ok, I'll go hitch up the team." Almanzo replied gently handing Rose back to his wife. He put on his hat and walked back outside.
Laura doubled checked to make sure she had everything. After she knew she had everything, she walked outside to join her husband. Almanzo had just finished hitching up the horses when he saw his wife approaching. He gently grabbed Rose and helped his wife into the wagon. When she was settled in her seat, the young woman took the infant back in her arms. Almanzo walked over to the other side of the wagon and climbed up into his seat. He grabbed the reigns once he was sitting in his seat.
Laura held Rose tightly in her arms. Almanzo pulled the reigns gently and clicked his tongue to the horses. As the wagon started pulling away from the house, Laura gently held Rose closer to her chest to keep her safe and secure. The young woman watched the horses trotting steadly down the little dirt road. As the wagon was moving down the road, she started thinking of the journal entries that she read earlier. She felt grateful for Almanzo, Rose and all the other people in her life.
"Manly?" Laura asked.
"Yes?" Almanzo asked, turning slightly so he could still pay attention to the road.
"I love you." Laura said sweetly after a minute.
"I love you too." Almanzo replied with a gentle, sweet smile.
Laura smiled back. Almanzo went back to driving the wagon. As they drove down the road, Laura continued to think about the events in the past. She looked down at Rose who was now sleeping in her mother's arms. It seemed that the wagon ride had lulled the child to sleep. Laura smiled to herself. She decided that she wouldn't live in the past but she would instead learn from it.
This is now. There was no turning back.
END
Well that's it. I do hope you enjoyed my very first Little House fanfiction. I may write some more Laura and Almanzo centered fics in the future. I may also write some fics centering around Charles and Caroline as well. I don't know yet. Either this was very fun to write. I hope you all enjoyed. :)
