A/N: Let's switch it up shall we? This is the longest chapter yet so we can learn a bit more about Santana and Sam.
I would love to start weekly Monday updates now that I feel like I have a foundation started with the story.
Please make sure to favorite, follow and review! :)
December 26th
Despite getting home at one in the morning, Santana's alarm on her cellphone goes off at seven-thirty. This is the time she wakes up for during the semester, but even during break she enjoys the alone time knowing Sam wouldn't be waking up for at least two hours. It's not that she's avoiding him or anything, but when you live with someone it's nice to have time to yourself especially since she was off from school and work this whole week. Plus she would be lying to herself if she wasn't still pissed off at the boy from the night before, but as always she finds it easier to let it go rather than dwell on it because nothing ever changes.
The couple has had their issues from the beginning, when they first started dating at the age of sixteen. Sam had recently transferred to McKinley High School and immediately caught the eyes of every girl in school. Growing up in Lima, Ohio there weren't too many boys who had the California surfer vibe so it didn't take long for everyone to know Sam's name. With Santana captain of the cheerleading squad, the Cheerios, Sam caught eye of her pretty quickly. When he found out she was in Glee Club, that was all the convincing he needed to join the group so he could get to know her better.
They had their struggles like any high-school couple. There were arguments, break-ups, but most importantly, trust issues that never seemed to go away. Both had their reasons, at one point each of them had cheated in the relationship. Regardless, no matter how many times they broke up, they always ended up back together. They drove their fellow Glee club members crazy with all their drama and it got to the point where no one even wanted them together anymore.
Santana, just like most of the Glee club members, had a dream of moving to New York City after high-school to become a singer. But senior year she got multiple scholarships to Ohio State due to her academics and cheerleading. It took a lot of thought and reason, but she decided to be rational and go to the school to study Data Analytics because realistically she needed to have a stable career if she wanted to move out of Ohio.
Sam stayed back in Lima to work at Kurt's father's auto shop, not quite sure what his next steps were. Being only two hours away, they decided to stay together and try long distance. It was fine at first, Sam would occasionally drive up to visit his girlfriend and watch her cheer at the Ohio State football games. Of course there would always be a huge party afterwards, which always ended up in Sam accusing Santana of cheating on him while he wasn't here.
The long distance was short lived because of the trust issues, and if Santana was being honest with herself she wanted to sleep around and party anyway. And that's exactly what she did - she slept with plenty of football players with hopes they would be in the NFL one day and she could have bragging rights, of course. She even experimented with her roommate - sleeping with her more than any of the football players.
It wasn't until two years later where Santana and Sam see each other again back in Lima. Their friends, Finn and Rachel, had broken the news that they were engaged and wanted to celebrate with their old Glee club members. Santana thought they were both idiots for being engaged so young, but she still made the trip to celebrate with all her old friends. At the party Sam and Santana caught up, and there she learned the boy had moved to the city of her dreams, New York, and was pursuing a modeling career. After a few drinks and catching up, the two of them left the party together to go back to Sam's hotel room and have been together ever since.
They tried long distance again, but it only took six months before Sam asked Santana to transfer to a college here and move in with him. She loved her life at Ohio State, but it's gotten more complicated as of recently that made things a little easier to accept Sam's request. Needing a change of scenery, Santana requested the transfer and packed her bags to move to New York City. Her parents would have been more furious if it hadn't been Columbia University she was transferring to. Being how competitive the school is, it was a huge achievement for Santana to be accepted and now she can proudly say she goes to an Ivy League School.
Things were great at first, but quickly went downhill. With Sam's modeling career really taking off, he became heavily involved with the partying scene and would stay out till three or four in the morning. Santana did her best to ignore it - she still had to focus on her academics especially since she transferred, she wanted to make sure she didn't fall behind. It wasn't until he brought her to one of the parties where Santana was able to see how bad it became. Sam would often become out of control, mixing drugs and alcohol, and the night would always end up in a screaming match between the two.
Regardless, Santana wanted to try because she thinks Sam could be the "one". At least that's what everyone tells her.
/
Santana enjoys the cold winter morning as she sips freshly made coffee from her mug out on her fire escape. She loves how cozy she feels in her oversized Ohio State sweatshirt and leggings, one of her all time favorite outfits.
"Hi neighbor!"
The girl almost drops her mug at the unexpected sound of someone else's voice. She turns to her side to see Brittany smiling at her, who is in a similar outfit, with an oversized Minnesota Vikings sweatshirt and big, fluffy cat slippers.
"Jesus, Britt! You scared the shit out of me."
Santana walks closer to the edge of the fire escape so she's closer to the girl on the other side, still a few feet in between them. She can hear Brittany giggling in response. "What are you doing up anyway?" Santana asks.
Brittany shrugs. "I made too many pancakes. Want some?"
Santana thinks about it for a second. She knows Sam won't be waking up for a few hours, and besides it's not like she was doing anything wrong. Eating pancakes together was innocent, right?
"I'll be right over!"
/
Ten minutes later and Santana is knocking at Brittany's door with butterflies in her stomach. When the blonde opens the door smiling from ear to ear, Santana can't help but smile back.
"Come on in." Brittany stands aside so Santana can enter the apartment.
"Nice place." Santana walks into the apartment and closes the door behind her before following Brittany over to the small kitchen table and taking a seat.
"Are you just saying that? 'Cause I feel like people just feel like they have to say that when they go over someone's house." Brittany places a plate of chocolate chip pancakes, as well as a bottle of syrup and fork in front of Santana and takes a seat across from her.
Santana giggles. "Yeah, I think you're right." She eyes the giant stack of pancakes in front of her. "Wow, these look great Britt! Do you cook a lot?"
Brittany gives Santana a shy smile. "Not really. I have a hard time with recipes. But I used to make pancakes for my sister all the time."
Santana takes a small bite and immediately moans at how delicious they taste. Brittany raises her eyebrows at the sound before asking, "That good, huh?"
"So good. I haven't had pancakes in forever." Santana takes another bite.
"What?! Why not? I have them at least two times a week." Brittany is genuinely surprised.
Santana shrugs as she finishes chewing. "Sam doesn't eat stuff like this. He can't be above a certain body fat percentage or his agency will drop him."
"Oh. That's sad." Brittany genuinely says.
The brunette continues eating the delicious pancakes in front of her, making sure to dip each bite in a healthy amount of syrup.
"So, Minnesota Vikings, huh? Are you from there?" Santana asks the blonde, wanting to steer the conversation away from Sam.
"St. Cloud, Minnesota, born and raised!" Brittany does a little fist bump that gets a giggle out of Santana.
"I thought I heard a Midwestern accent. Plus you have that Midwestern charm." She gives Brittany a playful wink, and notices a blush immediately appearing on Brittany's cheeks.
"What about you? Are you from Ohio, or did you just go there?"
"Lima, Ohio. Born and raised." Santana says, a little less enthusiastic than Brittany just before. "I also went to Ohio State before transferring here."
"That's so cool. Did you get to go to a lot of football games?"
"Um -" Santana finishes her last bite as she thinks about continuing. "Yeah. I was a cheerleader."
Brittany's eyes widen in amusement. "You cheered for the Buckeyes?!"
"Yep." Santana tries to play it cool, she doesn't usually like to brag although she knew it was impressive cheering in front of over a hundred thousand people most games.
"Wow." Brittany pauses as she looks over at Santana and meets her eyes. "I wouldn't minds seeing you in a cheerleading uniform." Brittany's tone is playful yet flirty at the same time, and this time Santana is the one blushing.
"In your dreams." The confidence in her voice surprises her despite how nervous she feels under Brittany's gaze.
Brittany's expression is hard to read as she smirks over at Santana. The two sit in a comfortable silence before Brittany gets up to take the dish to the sink. Santana can't help but watch the girl in front of her as she washes her plate, thinking about how domestic this all feels. She also can't deny how comfortable she feels in Brittany's apartment, with no make up and a messy bun.
"So what are you doing for the rest of the day? I have some errands I need to run, wanna come with?" Brittany looks over her shoulder at Santana.
"Yeah, sure. I actually need to buy a dress for New Year's Eve."
"For the dinner with yours and Sam's parents?" Santana is impressed Brittany remembers that - they talked about it the first night they want out and that was after a few drinks.
"Ugh, no. That's on New Year's Day. New Year's Eve we have Sam's agency party so I have to make sure I look better than all the bitchy models he works with."
"That shouldn't be hard." Brittany's back is turned as she finishes up the dishes, and her voice is low but Santana still hears. She gives the girl a warm smile, knowing she can't see with her back turned.
The two girls make plans to meet back up at twelve so they can get ready to go out. Santana heads back to her apartment unable to wipe the smile from her face after spending the morning with Brittany.
/
Sam is just barely waking up as Santana is getting ready to meet Brittany. She doesn't bother kissing him before she leaves, making sure he no knows that she's still not happy with him after last night.
Santana meets Brittany outside their apartment building as they discussed and the annoyance from Sam is immediately forgotten about. Although it is cold out the two girls opt to walk to where they need to go, both not bothered by the light snow flurries in the slightest. Santana looks over at Brittany and smiles at the fact that her nose and cheeks are already pink from the cold.
They decide to head to Target first so Brittany can pick up a few household items. Of course, they spend more time there than they had originally planned. Partially because of how much they love Target, but also because of them messing around and getting distracted by every section they passed. Before they left Target they made a quick stop at the Starbucks inside the store so they can each grab a hot beverage to keep them cold. Brittany, a Venti Peppermint Hot Chocolate of course, and Santana with her Venti black Americano. They stand outside of Target and sip on their drinks, deciding on what store to go to next when Santana's phone starts ringing.
She groans when she sees Sam's name and debates on picking it up for a second. "Hello?"
"Hey babe, where are you?"
"I'm with Brittany. We're about to go shopping so I can find a dress for New Year's Eve."
"Why?"
"What do you mean, why? We have your agency's party." Santana is getting more annoyed by the second.
There's silence on the other end so Santana looks at the screen to make sure he's still on the line. "Sam?"
"I forgot to tell you." She can hear the nerves in his voice and lets him continue, not wanting to lose her temper in front of Brittany even though she so badly wants to. "The boys and I are going to Atlantic City for an impromptu Bachelor party for Finn."
Santana tightens the grip on her cell phone out of pure frustration. Brittany noticed this and places a hand on her lower back as she mouths "you okay?". Santana immediately feels calmer by the girls touch as she nods her head, giving her a reassuring smile.
"Seriously, Sam? What about the dinner with our parents?"
"I should be home by then, reservations aren't until 7 and we're planning on leaving the morning of."
Despite Brittany calming her down she was still pissed off. They've had these plans for weeks and now Sam was talking about leaving her alone on their first New Year's Eve together in a couple of years.
"Santana?" Sam asks, scared after not getting a response.
"Yeah. Can we talk later? I don't have time for this right now." Santana doesn't let him respond before ending the call.
"What was that about?" Brittany asks.
"Sam just told me he's going to Atlantic City for New Year's Eve." Santana slips her cell phone into her back pocket. "Fucking asshole." She mumbles to herself before taking another sip of her drink.
"Wh - why would he go without you?"
"Our friends Finn and Rachel are getting married. Apparently they're going for Finn's Bachelor party."
The two girls begin walking without saying anything, with no designation in sight. Santana grips the Starbucks cup tightly in attempt to warm up her cold hands.
Brittany looks over at Santana with a bright idea. "We can always go out on New Years Eve. Maybe we can ask Mercedes and Tina? Oh and Kurt too!"
"Kurt is going to Atlantic City. He's Finn's step brother." Brittany tilts her head with a puzzled look at the new information she just received as Santana continues. "And Mercedes and Tina are back home. They live in LA."
Brittany thinks again for a minute. "Quinn?"
"She's on a cruise with her parents. Won't be back till next week."
"Hm." Brittany throws out hers and Santana's now empty cups in a nearby trash can. "Well, me and you could always go out."
Santana thinks about how to answer very carefully. She knows what happens when she goes out with Brittany, especially if there's alcohol and dancing involved. There's no way she would be able to keep her hands to herself, especially without Kurt around to interrupt. But at the same time she does want to spend it with Brittany. In fact it sounds even better than the original plan of going to Sam's stupid agency party.
"Or not..." Brittany adds after Santana's silence. Her voice brings Santana back to reality as she shakes her head.
"No, no. That sounds like fun, Britt. I just don't know if I want to go out anywhere on New Year's Eve."
"We could always have a lowkey night at my place. Order takeout, watch movies? With champagne of course."
Santana can't lie, that sounds like a perfect night and it's too good to resist. Without second thinking it Santana smiles at Brittany. "Sounds good to me."
/
When the girls head back to their apartment building around five, they're exhausted. After walking around a bit after Target they ended up getting a quick lunch and then Brittany insisted on milkshakes after, even if it was twenty degrees outside.
Santana can easily say this was the best day she's had in a long time. She can't remember the last time she laughed or smiled this much, and she also got to know more about Brittany which she has been so desperate to do ever since she saw her on the fire escape that first night.
Brittany walks Santana to her door and brings her into a hug. "Thanks for hanging out with me today."
Santana returns the hug and gives Brittany a light squeeze, drawing it out a bit longer when suddenly the door opens.
"Oh, hey Brittany!" The two girls separate at the sound of Sam's voice.
"Hey Sam." She doesn't quite match the friendliness in his voice. "I'll talk to you later, Santana."
Santana watches Brittany walk away before turning around and walking right past Sam. He has a confused look on the lack of friendliness from Brittany, as well as the cold shoulder from Santana.
When Santana walks in she immediately throws her bag down on the kitchen counter and kicks her shoes off before sitting down on the couch and turning on the television, never once looking at her boyfriend who's making his way over to the couch to sit next to her.
"I'm sorry I forgot to tell you about Finn's party. I didn't think you wanted to go to that party anyway, you usually hate them."
Santana continues to ignore him as he puts his arm around her shoulder.
"Babe?" Sam tries again to get the girls attention.
"I don't really care Sam." Her tone is dry and uninterested. "This was supposed to be our first New Year's Eve back together -" Santana stops herself, she normally hates talking about her feelings but she continues. "I thought that would mean something to you."
"Of course it does. But I didn't make these plans! Even Rachel isn't pissed at Finn, why should you be mad at me?"
Santana rolls her eyes at the comparison. "Rachel goes to bed at nine every New Year's Eve, of course she doesn't give a shit."
"Well maybe you two could go out together? It'd be nice to see her after they couldn't make it to Quinn's." Clearly Sam is trying to make the situation better but is failing miserably.
"Again, I'm trying to actually stay up to see the New Year. Besides, I'm hanging with Brittany."
"Oh!" Sam's voice shows he's pleasantly surprised at the new found friendship. "See, you'll probably have a better time with Brittany than we would have had at the party anyway." Sam gives Santana a quick kiss on the cheek before pulling away and standing up from the couch, clearly believing he was off the hook.
She's not going to try to argue his point anyway - she's confident she'll have a much better time with Brittany but she still feels unwanted from her own boyfriend. Too tired to care, Santana turns her attention back to 90 day fiancé.
"I'm heading downstairs to the gym, wanna come with?" Sam asks as he's filling up his water bottle from the kitchen.
"Nope."
"Alright, I'll see you later!" And with that quick goodbye Sam is out the front door.
Needing a cigarette, she takes her pack and heads out onto the fire escape. When she lights it she realizes that this is the first one she's had all day, when she's normally smoked much more by now. It's no coincidence that she didn't need one all day after spending it with Brittany. The tall, blonde has not left her mind since the two parted, even with all of her issues with Sam right now. Instead her focus is on those mesmerizing blue eyes, and the sound of Brittany's laughter.
Santana takes another long, drag from her cigarette as she continues thinking about the girl. Throughout high school Santana tried her hardest to ignore these types of feelings towards another girl by hooking up with different guys and of course, dating Sam. It's not that she didn't have those feelings towards the boy, but the feelings were much stronger whenever she was with a girl she found attractive. The feelings were definitely at an all time high with Brittany and this time she wasn't sure how long she would be able to ignore them the way she always has previously.
The thought of being lesbian, or at least bisexual, was something Santana always deflected. She knew she was sexually attracted to women after sleeping with her roommate in college multiple times, but she never saw herself being in a relationship with one. She saw firsthand at how gay people are treated by witnessing Kurt get bullied all throughout high school. And sure, she knew things were different and more accepting in New York but she can't imagine how her family would react if she brought a girl home, especially with how much they love Sam.
Her thoughts are running wild right now. Needing a distraction she takes out her phone and pulls up a new text message to Brittany.
Santana: Hey Britt-Britt
She puts her cigarette out in the snow piled up on the fire escape and climbs back inside to sit on the couch. When her phone goes off she picks it up quickly to open her new message.
Brittany: Hi San :)
Brittany: I was just thinking of you. What's your favorite movie?
Santana's heart skips a beat as she reads the text. She thinks for a minute before responding.
Santana: Titanic.
Brittany: That's a sad movie!
Santana: Yeah, but it's a classic! :p what's yours?
Brittany: Space Jam. Duh.
The two girls text back and fourth for the rest of the night, talking about the most random of topics. Brittany brings up how bummed she is to go back to work tomorrow, so Santana offers to come by the restaurant she works at for lunch. After today she really hated the idea of not seeing Brittany at all tomorrow, so now she has something to look forward to.
/
Sam and Santana head to bed around eleven, Sam having work early in the morning. He gets in the bed in his usual sleepwear which consists of nothing but a t-shirt and boxer briefs. When he lays down next to Santana, he gives the girl a kiss on the cheek before moving down her jawline and neck. He wraps his arm around her waist to hold her tightly, moving his body closer.
Santana turns her head away from the boy before removing his arm from off of her.
"What's the matter?"
"'Nothing. I'm just not really in the mood." Santana keeps her eyes down on her cellphone as she aimlessly scrolls through Instagram.
"You're not still pissed at me are you?"
"No, Sam. I'm not."
"So why no love then?" Sam kisses the girls cheek again for good measure.
"Just tired." She turns and gives him a quick kiss on the lips before turning over and wrapping the blanket around her more. "Goodnight."
"Night babe." Santana can hear the disappointment in his voice as he turns around and faces the other way. Before placing her phone down she opens up her text messages with Brittany to send a new one.
Santana: Goodnight Britt. See you tomorrow :)
Brittany: Can't wait! :D goodnight San
With that response she puts her phone on do not disturb and closes her eyes, with the blonde's face, who isn't her boyfriend, immediately entering her mind as she drifts off to sleep.

December 27th
All day Santana has been patiently waiting for one in the afternoon. The time has finally come and she gives one last look in the mirror making sure she looks good before leaving her apartment.
She decides to take a cab to the restaurant, not wanting to walk in her heels with all the wet slush outside from the snow storm.
Every table in the restaurant is just about full as Santana walks in, but she knows Brittany will be behind the bar and has a seat saved for her there. She rounds the corner to see the girl she's been dying to see all day pouring beer into a glass from the tap.
When Brittany looks up and catches Santana walking over, she waves excitedly and points to the seat she saved for her.
Santana takes a seat and watches Brittany as she drops a beer off to another customer sitting at the bar a few seats over. When Brittany walks back over she hands Santana a drink menu.
"Hi." the blonde says, seemingly shy all of a sudden.
"Hey." Santana smiles up at her before biting her lip as she looks over the drink menu. "What do you recommend?"
"Well, I do make a mean old fashioned."
"Ah, a girl after my own heart."
Santana smiles up at the girl as she hands back the menu and watches Brittany get a whiskey glass to prepare the drink. As she's making the cocktail, Santana's eyes travel down to the perfect amount of cleavage showing from Brittany's tight, V-neck shirt, that's just enough to tease her. Her eyes dart back up to Brittany's face once the girl looks up, hoping she didn't get caught.
"You look really pretty today." Brittany tells the girl as she places the old fashioned in front of her.
Santana, who's usually very confident, feels like she could fall apart right here at the bar at the girl's comment, as well as almost getting caught staring at her chest.
"Thanks Britt." Santana takes a small sip of the old fashioned. "Perfect." She says before taking another sip, letting the whiskey go down her throat smoothly.
Before Brittany can respond, a tall Asian boy appears behind her and tickles her sides. Brittany lets out a giggle and swats the boy's hands away.
"Mike!" She turns around and gives the boy a hug as Santana eyes the scene in front of her curiously.
"Hey Britt. I missed you! We should catch up after work." The boy has a cheeky smile and Santana hates to admit that he is very handsome.
"Sure! Oh Mike, this is my friend Santana. Santana, Mike."
Mike smiles politely. "Nice to meet you, Santana."
Santana tries her best to get rid of her scowl, but it's hard when she sees Mike keeps looking at Brittany with hungry eyes. "Likewise" is all she manages to get out. Mike seems completely unfazed but Brittany does give the girl a questioning look.
Mike is the first to break the awkward tension happening at the moment. "Well, I just got sat a table full of Karen's, so you better get that Pinot Grigio ready Britt!" Mike laughs as he walks away towards his tables.
Once he's out of sight Brittany, still looking at Santana questioningly, folds her arms and quirks an eyebrow at the brunette. "What the heck was that about?"
"What?" Santana acts dumb, taking another sip of her drink.
"I dunno. You seemed annoyed by Mike. Are you only allowed to have one Asian friend or something?"
Santana practically spits out her drink at the ridiculous comment. Before she can respond, Mike comes back for the bottle of Pinot Grigio he just predicted a few minutes ago.
"Oh, Brittany I forgot to tell you! I'm having a New Year's Eve party, you should totally come."
Brittany looks back over at Santana who's not even trying to make it look like she isn't ease-dropping before looking back at Mike.
"Sorry Mike, I already have plans. Thanks for the offer though!"
Mike nods his head and disappears again to bring the bottle of wine to his table. When Brittany looks back over to Santana she's shaking her head at her.
"Did you really think I'd ditch you to go to some party?"
Santana finishes her drink as she pushes it towards Brittany. She shrugs her shoulders before answering.
"You can go if you want."
"I don't want to. I made those plans with you because I wanted to, Santana."
Santana doesn't know why she's acting so jealous and intimidated by Mike. Brittany was right, she was the one who made the plans to hang out on New Year's Eve so clearly she wanted to spend it with Santana.
/
The seats at the bar begin filling up as the restaurant gets busier for lunch time, so Santana doesn't get to talk to Brittany as much as before. She enjoys her time by watching Brittany work her charm on all her guests who clearly love her. Brittany comes by and checks on Santana from time to time and even drops off the restaurant's specialty grilled cheese with bacon and avocado paired with tomato soup. Santana had made a comment yesterday about how much she loved grilled cheese with tomato soup and Brittany made note of it, knowing how good the restaurant's dish was.
Santana doesn't mind it getting busy, of course she wants to talk to Brittany but she actually enjoys watching the girl in her natural element as she so easily wins the hearts over of everyone at the bar, including herself - she just won't admit it.
Most of the people at the bar are just waiting for their table to be ready, so it doesn't take too long for it to clear up a bit. As it starts to slow down Brittany comes back over with an iced tea Santana asked for, not wanting to get plastered in the afternoon on a weekday.
"Kurt just texted me. I told him you were here and he's going to try and stop by!"
"Oh, great." Santana doesn't try to hide her disappointment. She doesn't know what it was with Kurt lately but he always seems to be there.
Brittany giggles before lightly poking Santana's cheek. "You're cranky today."
Santana crinkles her nose at the gesture. "I am not."
/
Kurt walks over to the bar about twenty minutes later, coming from his fashion internship a few blocks away. He unravels his scarf and removes his jacket to hang up on the coat rack behind him before taking a seat next to Santana.
"Oh, Satan. You look nice." His tone is condescending and she knows he's trying to imply something, he just can't say it out loud right now.
Once Brittany spots Kurt, she quickly runs over and leans across the bar to give Kurt a hug in which he gladly returns.
"Wow, I didn't get that reaction when I came here." Santana's tone is sarcastic but in reality she was jealous at the blonde's reaction when she saw Kurt. Why didn't she get a hug?
Brittany smiles over at Santana before looking at Kurt and whispering just loud enough for Santana to still here. "She's cranky today."
"I am not!"
Kurt just ignores the brunette next to him, believing Brittany over her. He takes a quick peek over at the bar to eye the selection of liquor. "Britt, would you be a doll and make me a dirty martini? It's been a day from hell."
Brittany quickly nods and is about to grab the Ketel One vodka before Kurt interrupts. "Wait! Can I have Grey Goose instead?"
Santana rolls her eyes listening to Kurt's request, it was three pm why was he being so needy? Brittany has no problem fulfilling his request, but tells him she has to go in the back to grab another bottle. As soon as she walks away, Kurt takes the opportunity to turn and look at Santana with an accusing look.
"So. Britt told me you two spent the day together yesterday."
"Yeah, so?"
"And now you're here, alone, eating lunch at her workplace."
"Get to the point lady Hummel." Santana's voice is sharp as she starts losing her patience with the boy.
"Santana." Kurt says more seriously now. "I saw you two the other night, and last night."
"Nothing happened." Santana's getting defensive now, and she so badly wants Brittany back so he would stop talking.
"Nothing happened because I was there." Kurt looks away quick to make sure Brittany isn't coming. "I just don't want this to end up like it did with Michelle."
The mention of Santana's old roommate makes her heart sink to her stomach. Yes, the two of them slept together on multiple occasions but feelings also developed. When Michelle expressed this to Santana she freaked out, and it was only a few months later when Santana transferred and moved to New York City. She hasn't talked to her ever since although Michelle has made multiple attempts to contact her.
Santana swallows heavily just as Brittany returns with the Grey Goose vodka and a martini glass.
"I'm so happy you could come Kurt!" Brittany says as she begins making his drink.
"Me too! It's funny, I've passed this place a bunch of times on my way to work and always wanted to try it. Now I have a reason to come here all the time!" Kurt claps his hands in excitement.
Brittany gives Kurt a big smile before placing his martini in front of him. Another couple at the bar grabs Brittany's attention and she quickly walks away to take their drink orders.
Kurt takes Santana's hand who is clearly trying not to get upset after what he had just told her. He gives it a quick squeeze before letting go.
"I'm sorry to bring her up. But you can't run away from these feelings forever." His voice is softer now and he takes a sip of his martini. "Damn that's good."
Santana and Kurt hang around the bar for about a half hour before heading out. The girl feels defeated after talking with Kurt, but she knows deep down he's only trying to help. He was the only one who knew about Santana's secret, and he was there for her when she needed someone to talk to about Michelle. This is why Kurt has tried on many attempts to get Sam and Santana to go their separate ways, because he knows that he's not what Santana wants deep down.
Before they leave, Brittany comes around the bar to give each of them a hug and thank them for coming. On their way out Brittany promises to text them both later, Santana knowing it won't be till much later, after she "catches up" with Mike.
Outside of the bar, Kurt brings Santana in for another big hug knowing she needs it although he know she'd never admit it. "I'll call you if Sam gets crazy in Atlantic City."
"Please don't. He's not my problem while he's away."
Kurt presses his lips together and nods understandingly. The two of them say their goodbyes one last time and Santana hauls a cab to go back to her apartment.
/
Sam texts Santana that it's going to be a long night, and part of her is relieved. She makes the most out of an empty apartment by taking a long bath to relax and try to turn off her mind for awhile.
After, Santana cozies up on the couch with a throw blanket, a glass of wine, and a book titled "It Ends With Us" by Colleen Hoover. She reads a good amount but decides to put it down to watch a movie instead, keeping the bottle of wine nearby so she doesn't have to keep getting up to refill her drink.
It's about eleven by the time she finally starts getting tired, big thanks to the bottle of Cabernet and Melatonin she took. She gets herself ready for bed and turns all the lights off as she gets comfortable under the covers.
She's not sure if it's the wine getting to her, or the fact that she has an empty bed for the first time in awhile but Santana finds her right hand slowly reaching down her pajama shorts as she closes her eyes shut tight. Immediately she pictures the other night when she was dancing with Brittany, and the girl's heavy breathing as Santana kissed her earlobe. Santana slips a finger in between her folds and bites her lip, feeling herself get wetter the more she pictures the two of them dancing. Right before she can do anything, she's stopped abruptly when her phone goes off.
"Ugh." Santana pulls her hand out from her shorts and reaches for her phone.
Ironically, Brittany's name appears on the lock screen and Santana swipes open the text, feeling less annoyed by the disturbance. After all, it was the girl she was thinking about so she couldn't be mad at her for interrupting.
Brittany: Hi arr you stoll up?,
Santana can't believe the irony of her life right now as she's getting ready to type out a text to the girl she was just about to touch herself to.
Santana: Yeah, I'm still up.
Right after she sends the text her phone begins ringing. She quickly clicks accept and brings the phone to her ear. "Hey, everything okay?"
"Everything's fine." Brittany definitely sounds buzzed on the other line and the tone of her voice brings Santana back to the other night, the same exact scene she was just thinking about moments ago.
Santana clears her throat, trying hard to ignore the pulsing feeling coming from her shorts. "What's up Britt?"
Brittany pauses before speaking. "Do you like sushi?"
"I love sushi. Why?"
"Cool. Maybe we can order sushi on New Year's Eve."
Santana's not exactly sure what the reason for the call was but still, she's glad to hear Brittany's voice.
"Sure, that sounds good."
"Okay, cool."
There's silence between the two girls but Santana can hear the sound of Brittany rustling around in bed, followed by a yawn. She thinks Brittany is about to fall asleep but stands corrected once she hears the girl's voice on the other line.
"Did you not like me at first? I don't think you did." The question takes Santana off guard, but thanks to the bottle of wine she drank she feels prepared to answer the girl's direct question.
"No. I was scared of you." She decides to answers truthfully, feeling more confident being able to hide behind a phone and not face to face.
"I was scared of you too." Brittany sounds sleepier with every word. She continues, this time it sounds more like a mumble. "I'm still scared of you."
"Why?"
"Because of how you make me feel." Her voice is much clearer this time but still sounds sleepy.
Santana doesn't know what to say this time. She stares up at the ceiling, holding the phone to her ear with butterflies in her stomach. She wants to say that she's scared too, that in the few days she's known Brittany she's made her feel things her boyfriend of five years has never made her feel. But she can't get herself to say anything and soon she hears the sound of steady breathing, sounding like Brittany has fallen asleep.
"Britt?"
"Hm?"
"Go to sleep. I'll text you in the morning." Her voice is soft and she feels her eyelids getting heavy as well.
"Okay. Goodnight San" Santana can barely make the words out, knowing Brittany is practically asleep.
Santana ends the call and places the phone down on her nightstand. She groans as she turns over, the feeling from before the call long gone. The sound of the door shutting makes Santana close her eyes quick to give the illusion that she's already asleep when Sam walks in. She can't look at him after what she was about to do had Brittany not called. She also can't look at him knowing that she'd rather it be Brittany coming home to her than him.
The thought puts a pit in her stomach as she hears Sam walking towards her. He checks to see if she's asleep and places a soft kiss on her forehead before heading to the bathroom to get ready for bed. Santana shuts her eyes tight, trying hard not to let the tears fall but a few escape anyway. She wipes them quick before Sam comes back and attempts to shut her mind off so she can fall asleep, but she can't stop thinking about the mess she's created for herself.
