Almond or oat? Why can't they just get regular wait, they did for the kids.

Meredith closed the refrigerator and made her way to find the next item on her list.

"Meredith?"

She looked up to find a short haired man. He was a little taller and had stubble on his cheeks. He smiled at her look of recognition.

"Finn?"

They both smiled at the awkward moment.

Do we hug? Do we shake hands?

Meredith opened her mouth to speak, "I haven't seen you since.."

I was an embarrassing mess high on morphine and dumped you.

She refrained from saying that and instead, he interrupted, "Yeah..since then."

Another awkward silence.

He broke the silence, "I've run into some articles about your research. You've become a pretty big deal, right?"

"Oh, thanks. How are you?"

Meredith shuffled the almond milk closer from one hand to another. She briefly glanced around her to check her surroundings.

He smiled and took a small breath in, "I've been good. I, uh, got married and have two kids. Ben and Ali."

Finn took out his phone and showed Meredith a few pictures.

"That's my wife Angie. We've been married for some time now."

The woman in the picture had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. She had warm eyes and a kind smile. In the picture, both kids stood in front of her. A boy, who reached her shoulders and a girl with blonde hair.

"Ben is twelve and plays softball. Angie is ten and she also plays softball. That's our dog Chase."

Of course they had a dog. The dog was a golden retriever. He sat in front of them gazing elsewhere.

Meredith smiled as she looked back at him, "Congratulations. They seem like great kids."

He smiled back as he closed his phone.

"What about you?"

She was caught off guard with the question. As happy as she was for Finn, she still felt a little awkward exchanging information with the man she almost chose over Derek. She briefly gave it a thought before continuing, "Well I'm married-almost twelve years! And I have three kids."

"Wow! Three?" Finn replied with open eyes, "I definitely did not see that coming!"

Me either.

Meredith chuckled and thought back to her own children, "I know. They're amazing."

"Do you have any pictures?"

"Oh yes!"

Meredith pulled out a picture of her kids. She settled on one she had taken at the aquarium. Zola stood next to Bailey as Ellis stood in front of her. All three had a large smile plastered on their faces.

Finn studied the picture. The eldest had dark almond eyes and curly hair pulled into buns. Was she adopted? It seemed like it because the two younger kids had blonde hair and had similar features. The boy had blue eyes and a longer nose. The girl had green eyes and her hair loose in front of her with a small braid tied to her forehead.

"That's Zola. She's her daddy's daughter. She's ten, so brilliant and smart-loves to talk just like my husband."

She pointed to the blonde boy next, "Bailey-He's a nice little mix of both of us- except he's very athletic like his dad."

Finn chuckled. Athleticism wasn't a quality Meredith possessed- that much he remembered.

Next, a little girl with blonde hair and green eyes, "And my youngest. Ellis. She's my carbon copy according to her dad but she is a daddy's girl."

Finn glanced back at Meredith and smiled, "Wow. You have cute kids."

She stared at the picture briefly before looking back at him beaming. She adored talking about her children.

"Thanks."

Just then Zola came running from down the aisle, "Mommy! Dad wants to know if you're ready."

"Yes! I am. I got the milk," Meredith replied as she placed a hand at the top of her eldest's head.

She turned to Finn and smiled, "Duty calls."

"It was very nice to see you again. I'm glad to see you doing well," He waved with a smile.

Meredith waved back, "Likewise."

She walked back with Zola. He heard her ask where her father was as her daughter took her hand and guided her. Finn took note that she never mentioned her husband's name. Perhaps he was right all those years ago. Nonetheless, he was happy to see her find her happiness.

"Hey! Did you get the milk?"

Derek leaned on the cart with one foot on the bottom rail. Bailey and Ellis were standing next to him chatting about which candy they would get.

Meredith lifted the almond milk to show him, "You said almond right? I grabbed the almond."

Derek chuckled, "Yeah. I said almond. Thank you."

He leaned in to peck her cheek as he took the milk of her hands and placed it next to the rest of the groceries.

He turned to her and studied her face, "You okay? You seem… not okay."

Her gaze was distant. She thought about how different her life was all those years ago when she was drowning herself in tequila at Joe's bar. Back then children were not something she envisioned- especially when she was dating Finn (and Derek). She knew he had plans but she really didn't have any and if she did she couldn't see them with Finn.

"Yeah! I'm great.

"

She gave him a genuine smile and pecked his lips.

"I am more than okay."

Derek looked into her eyes, "You didn't use the word 'fine'. You must be really okay."

Meredith giggled, "I'll tell you later."

Before could respond Bailey interrupted, "Daddy! Can we get ice-cream from the place by the park?"

Finn made his way to the check-out line and noticed Meredith's daughter. As he looked back up he noticed she was showing a man the milk. He leaned in to kiss her cheek and then chuckled.

The man was tall. He had salt and peppered hair with a slim, fit build. He wore a navy sweater with dark jeans and seemed to be a very expensive watch. He seemed nice- at least from the back of his head. They looked like a sweet couple and she seemed very happy. She glowed around her family in a different way from all those years ago. She seemed different.

When the man turned to Meredith, Finn instantly recognized the man that appeared to be her husband.

Derek.

He was the father of her kids. Of the chatty girl, the athletic kid, and her carbon copy.

He was her husband. The father of her children

He had been wrong. Derek didn't hurt her. He didn't ruin her life.

He made her happy and together, they had formed a very happy family.

In one of the rare moments of his life, he was glad he was wrong.
