"Oh my god Amy, he is precious."

Amelia smiled as she watched her brother hold his new nephew in his arms. It was a difficult labor with Link being pulled into an emergency surgery. Dr. Bailey had been with her the whole time and the first person to visit her was her brother.

Link walked in with Meredith trailing behind him

"I heard my nephew was born and wanted to meet him," Meredith's smile fell as soon as she saw Derek holding the baby, "I thought you were in surgery! We were supposed to come in together but I couldn't find you!"

"Shhh you'll scare the baby," Derek reprimanded with a whisper. He gently chuckled as he continued to rock the baby back and forth.

"Okay, my turn. You've clearly been here for a while."

The new parents chuckled at the scene. No one had been as excited about the newest edition than Meredith and Derek. Before telling them, Amelia had been nervous about telling her big brother and the woman she called sister. She and Link weren't even in a serious relationship when she found out about her pregnancy and was worried about her brother's reaction.

"Ellis grabbed Derek's phone and played some song by The Clash and she looked at him and said, 'Daddy, you have terrible taste in music,'" Meredith laughed as she imitated her daughter's facial expressions and all. She raised her leg on the couch and wrapped her hands around her knee.

Ellis had recently taken an obsession with Hip Hop and was a self proclaimed music critic. Derek rolled his eyes as he pictured the little girl on the couch with his phone in her hands wearing a red tutu.

Derek let out a long sigh, "She's my worst critic."

Derek made his way to the couch with two glasses of scotch and placed one in front of Link.

Link seemed like a nice guy. A little over enthusiastic but nice. Derek had heard he had a rough childhood and genuinely enjoyed his company so when he heard Amy had started some sort of relationship with him, he didn't seem to mind. In fact, he was quite happy Amelia had moved on from whatever she and Owen had. She seemed happy.

Link thanked him as he took the glass and listened to Meredith's story. Amelia had asked him to come with her to tell her family the news. He was nervous to say the least.

Meredith took a sip of her wine and set it back down in the coaster, "Well they can't always be on your side, Derek. They gotta side with me every now and then."

"Link and I are having a baby!"

Amelia's outburst caused the couple to stare at them.

"What?!" They asked in unison.

Amelia glanced at Link and then at the pair, "Yeah! It's exciting…and scary…and maybe a mistake, I'm sure you have an opinion but I..uh..we just…we.."

Amelia continued to ramble as Meredith and Derek looked at each other in shock.

"We wanted you to know," she finished. She looked at her sister in law and then at her brother. A lingering silence settled as her nerves shot up.

This was a mistake, Amy thought.

She glanced at Link with a nervous look as he tightly squeezed her hand.

"Wow!" Meredith shouted as she made her way to hug her. She pushed Link to the side before commanding, "Scoot over!"

Derek stood to hug Link, "Congratulations! Welcome to the family!"

Amelia looked at her brother embracing Link and pulled away from Meredith.

"Wait! You're not mad?" Amelia asked with confusion evident on her face.

"Are you kidding?" asked Derek, making his way towards her, "I'm thrilled for you."

He hugged her tightly. His baby sister. The one who he never wanted to have her know pain was on her way to having a beautiful family of her own.

Meredith laughed as she hugged Link, "I'm going to be an auntie! Auntie Mer!"

"We just had no idea that the two of you were even so serious," Meredith added before glancing at Derek.

Amelia and Link glanced at each other before responding, "Neither did we!"

Meredith held the baby in her arms and rocked him back and forth.

Derek smiled fondly as he watched his wife hold a baby in his arms. He had made his way to the shoulder rest of the couch with his arms crossed.

"Does he make you want another one?" Link asked, "I mean, I know you have three already but holding a newborn-"

"He's a very cute baby and I love my husband very much but no. I am happy with my three little Grey-Shepherds," Meredith quickly responded. Derek chuckled as he shook his head.

During her last pregnancy, Meredith had suffered a placenta abruption making it one of the scariest moments in Derek's life. His wife had been through enough near death experiences but this one topped them all. His daughter's and wife's lives were on the line and he was helpless.

Link looked towards Derek, "What about adopting again?"

"Zola is almost eleven. Bailey is nine and Ellis is nearly seven. I think our baby days are done," Derek chuckled, "Besides you just had your first baby. Try to get through the first few nights and then we'll see if you start thinking about another one."

Amelia shot her brother a thankful look. She was not ready for this conversation and did not want to touch it at all.

"You are the cutest, Scout!" Meredith announced.

Link sat next to Amy as he pulled out a box of graham crackers and handed them to Amelia

He looked up before commenting, "Or maybe not Scout."

Meredith looked up before looking towards Derek.

"Why not Scout?" Derek asked. He kind of liked the name and was warming up to it.

Link glanced towards Amelia and then to the couple, "I'm not sure yet."

"Oh," Meredith replied. Clearly Amelia was not on board. She looked towards Amelia and asked, "Why not Scout?"

Derek chuckled as he looked at Amelia. Clearly she wasn't overly fond of the name yet.

Amelia glanced at her brother before responding, "I love Scout...as a nickname!"

Link chuckled before Amelia added, "and I love you!"

"I got that I'm good. But we should name him"

Meredith glanced at Derek with a glimmer in her eye. She grinned at him almost as if she knew he was thinking about their own children's names. There was a time when both of them had argued over Bailey's name before he was born.

What about William?

I like Sebastian.

Sebastian Shepherd. That's quite a mouthful.

Then with Ellis they couldn't agree on how to spell her middle name.

Caroline with an i or Carolyn with a y?

With a y. My mother will never shut up about it even though she'll be named after both her and Lexie.

I like it spelled with an i.

You chose the name Ellis. Let me choose the spelling for her middle name.

With Zola, they had both been adamant about keeping her name. But her last name? That was a different story.

We're hyphenating.

No it should be a middle name!

She should have your last name too!

And she is! As a middle name!

We're hyphenating!

Middle Name!

Meredith's voice brought Derek back to reality.

"I agree with Link."

Amelia raised her eyebrows, "On Scout?"

"On naming him."

Derek nodded, "Yea, you need to choose a name before you walk out of here without one and we call him child-who-was-never-named-because-his-mother-couldn't-decide."

Amelia rolled her eyes as she shifted a bit on her bed, "What about Tony?"

Link and Derek groaned as Meredith smiled.

"You hate it?" asked Amelia looking back and forth from her brother and partner.

Meredith added, "Tony Soprano!" She was still a sucker for the show and she would watch reruns with Derek whenever possible.

Link shook his head, "Tony Boloney?"

"Tony's a phony?," added Derek.

Meredith glared at him before looking back at the new parents.

"I'm allowed to not like names, right?" questioned Link as he looked towards Derek for support.

Derek raised his eyebrows and stood up as he walked towards the baby, "We're not weighing in on that."

He had learned his lesson with his own wife and knew his sister well enough to know that she would have the final say.

Meredith chuckled as she let Derek touch the baby's cheek before handing him back to his parents.

"Now...he's adorable, whatever his name is," Meredith whispered in a failed attempt to not wake him up.

Amelia looked to her brother, "Right..except not Tony."

Derek chuckled as he followed his wife out of the room, "No, not Tony."

Amelia chuckled as she watched her sister walk out the room. Meredith and Amelia had bonded throughout the years and maintained a close relationship. It was rocky at times especially after Derek nearly died when a semi hit him, but they were able to patch their differences.

Derek paused before he walked out and looked at his sister, "Congratulations. You have a beautiful baby."

A smile slowly crept on Amy's face as her brother left the room.

Link's voice tore her away from her thoughts, "Okay let's start throwing out names!"

Derek walked in with Meredith behind him, "Hey you paged?"

"Everything okay? Are you okay?" Meredith asked.

They were just about to leave the hospital when Derek got a page from Amelia. He and Meredith rushed back into her room.

"Yes! Sorry I didn't mean to scare you," Amelia hurriedly replied. She fiddled with Scout's blanket who was laying in the hospital crib.

Meredith looked around the room, "Where's Link?"

"Wasn't he going to stay the night with you?"

Derek looked concerned. He always did when it came to Amy. He had promised not to big brother her but couldn't help it.

"He's on his way," replied Amy just as Link walked in.

"Oh great you're still here!" Link smiled before looking towards Amy, "Wait-you haven't asked them have you?"

Meredith raised a brow, "Asked us what?"

Amy opened her mouth to speak then closed it. She took a deep breath as she watched her brother tilt his head in confusion.

"Okay so we've been talking a lot about all the 'what if' scenarios," Link began.

"Yea, you know with everything you two have been through I know that anything can happen and I know you two always make sure the kids are okay no matter what," Amelia added.

Meredith and Derek glanced at each other knowingly. They had recently reworked their will to add Ellis and to change guardianship to Amelia and Maggie. They couldn't have their children in better hands should their worst nightmare happen.

"We were hoping that..." Link began.

"That you would be his godparents...or... I don't know...guardians in case anything happens to us like another brain tumor or cancer…or if I go off the rails again.. I mean I don't know" Amelia rambled, "I just know that if anything happens to us you two would be amazing and-"

"Amy" interrupted Derek.

"You two are great parents! I mean Zola is chatty but she's so brilliant and a genius- and Bailey is a little heartbreaker I mean he's full of so much energy and all but he's still cute. And Ellis- that kids got spunk and she's so lovable! And your clone, Mer. It's a miracle you two have great kids! And you've taken care of me all this time-"

"Amy-" interrupted Meredith.

"No one would be better! I mean maybe you should even raise him now. But Maggie- oh Maggie! She will be pissed I didn't ask her and the other bio-sisters are going to kill me but-"

The married couple gave each other a look before interrupting one last time, "AMY!"

Amelia looked up as she closed her mouth. The baby gently whimpered and Link quickly made his way to hold him.

"Look, we just know that whatever happens, our kid will be lucky to have you in his life. And we trust you with him no matter what," added Link.

"We'd be honored," Derek smiled.

Meredith smiled as Amy let out a deep breath.

"Did you pick a name yet?" Meredith asked.

Link and Amelia glanced at each other before they both responded, "We did."

Derek raised his eyebrows, "What is it?"

Amelia looked at her brother. She was proud of the name she chose. She knew her baby couldn't have a better name. The nerves were too much but she took a deep breath before revealing the name.

"Scout Derek Shepherd Lincoln"

Derek's face softened. Meredith gulped. Link looked at the couple and then at Amelia.

Derek let out a breathy chuckle before breaking the moment, "Bailey is going to be pissed you stole his name even though he never uses it."

The family laughed as the mood lightened.

"Well it's a pretty great name," Amy replied gently, "and he's named after a pretty great person."

Derek glanced at his sister and gave her a thankful smile. The Shepherd siblings had come a long way since their arguing days.

Long gone were the competitive-out-of-spite days. The days where Derek tried to undermine her and make her feel like the black sheep of the family. The days of his overprotectiveness coming off as overbearing. The days where she hid things from him or when she'd push him to the ledge. They still had their spats and their sibling arguments but now there was an understanding. A mature version of their sibling dynamics.

An appreciation for the challenges and the love they had for each other.
