"You are the best brother ever and you are the best sister ever!"
Amelia jumped into the back of Derek's car as she greeted both him and Meredith. Meredith chuckled as Derek rolled his eyes.
Amelia had called them asking them to carpool. It had become a bit of a habit to at least carpool together once or twice a week since their schedules usually synced up.
Derek looked at Amelia through the rearview window and glanced back to the radio, "You're lucky the nanny is with the kids today, where is Maggie?"
"She's coming," Amelia answered, "Mer, ask her who slept over last night she won't tell me!"
Derek furrowed his eyebrows at Amelia's lack of boundaries, "Does she have to tell you?"
Meredith turned to look at Amelia, "How do you not know? When Derek and I were sleeping together everyone in that damn frat house knew. They saw him sneak out the house! Multiple times! "
"She's right, everyone knew everything in that house," Derek chuckled, recalling his time at Meredith's house. Everyone knew everything and nothing was ever kept a secret. With time, he learned to appreciate the village that lived in that house but would never admit he missed living in the house. That chapter was over and now he and Meredith lived in their Dream House with their children. Still, it was nice to recall those times.
"Didn't Izzy catch you naked once? And then she and Alex caught us doing it on the stairs and Lexie caught us in the kitchen!" Meredith laughed as she popped an almond in her mouth.
Derek chuckled as Amelia gagged. Her brother naked was not an image she wanted to imagine.
"Well she came in late last night and she has a filthy mouth- OH! She's coming. Ask her!" Amelia jumped at the sight of Maggie running around the car. She opened the door and jumped in, "Sorry, Sorry! Thank you for the ride!"
Derek peered at Maggie through the rearview mirror and asked, "What happened to your car?"
Derek had noticed that her car had been missing from the driveway and wondered why Maggie looked so flustered. Meredith's head snapped to the backseat as she asked, "Who did you have loud dirty sex with last night? Amelia wants to know."
Maggie's eyes widened, "Amelia!"
"Meredith!" Both Shepherds turned to Meredith in surprise at her blunt question.
Meredith sat back in her seat after looking at both Amy and Derek, "What? Oh c'mon we're all adults here and you want to know."
Derek put the car in drive and drove to the hospital. Why am I stuck with the Sister Chiefs?
In truth, he actually enjoyed the company of the Sister Chiefs, as he so fondly nicknamed them. He appreciated their closeness and how they opened Meredith up in a different way. Since Cristina had left for Switzerland, Meredith had felt alone. Their marriage was in trouble and he had left her for a stupid job in DC. When they finally patched things up, she leaned on her sisters and Alex for support as Derek recovered from his accident. Everyone had stepped up and helped Meredith when she stayed at the hospital with him. Amelia would often relieve her of duty and send her home with the kids while she stayed with her brother. Alex and Maggie would take turns picking up or dropping off the kids from daycare. And when he was finally able to go home, their faces - and Bailey, Ben, Owen, Richard, Callie, and Arizona- were the ones who were there to see him off.
He owed his life to them for taking care of his family when he couldn't and for making sure he was still breathing and living.
"I at least want to know if you are going to let me sleep tonight because your loud sounds and filthy mouth kept me up all last night," Amelia continued he interrogation.
Derek glanced at Meredith and smirked. She placed another almond in her mouth as she held her laugh. Back when they both lived in Meredith's house, every single person would complain about how loud they were.
Maggie was mortified and rubbed her hands over her face, "Okay! Can we stop talking about this please? I am begging you! "
Amelia leaned in to whisper, "Was it still that int-"
Maggie slapped Amelia's arm in an attempt to shut her up, "Derek is here! He can hear us!"
Meredith scoffed, "Oh please, Derek lived in the frat house with me and is just as bad a gossip as I am.
She turned to look at her husband as she asked, "Derek, do you care about any of this?"
Meredith mouthed say no at him so she could continue to interrogate Maggie.
Derek kept his eyes on the road as he actively tried to tune them out, "I'm ignoring you now."
"Did he at least go to ladytown? Because I find that if they don't go to ladytown the first time, there should be no next time," Amelia remarked.
"She's right about that" pointing her eyesight very briefly to Derek before looking back at her sisters.
Derek's eyes widened at her revelation, "Meredith!"
"What? We're married! There were plenty of next times after. It's kind of obvious with the multiple kids thing," she laughed, "Take it as a compliment. Besides, you said you were ignoring us!"
She gave him a smirk as she turned to Maggie and mouthed every time.
Amelia gagged, "Okay Derek's right. We should shut up now."
Maggie sighed in relief, "Good! Because if either of you says another word, I will jump out of this car! While it is moving!"
"Hey you paged?"
Derek popped his head into the CT room. Maggie was sitting with the radiologist as she motioned to the screen.
"Uh -y-yes, can you take a look at these scans? They're about to come up."
"Sure. Anything in particular I need to watch out for?"
"He's been presenting with headaches and dizziness. He came in for a routine procedure but I want to get everything clear before we proceed"
"Okay," Derek turned from the monitors to the patient. The radiologist made his way out of the room leaving them alone. Derek noticed how uncomfortable Maggie felt, "You okay?"
She turned to look at him and blinked several times before looking away, "Y-yes of course I'm okay. Why wouldn't I be okay?"
"Because you're avoiding looking me in the eye," he chuckled.
Maggie turned her head slightly.
Derek's suspicions were confirmed, "Yep. You're avoiding me."
"Sorry it's just- Look, you're my sister's husband and I respect you. It's bad enough that they know all about my sex life and it's even worse that you heard it all," Maggie sighed.
She had been mortified that her sex life was aired in front of her brother-in-law.
Derek laughed and shook his head, "You know, when I met Meredith she was so closed off. I mean she wouldn't let anyone in. She pushed people away as far as she could, except Cristina. Because they were the same. Owen and I would call them the Twisted Sisters."
He didn't talk about Meredith's past often. So much of it was in the dark for Maggie. All she knew was that Meredith had been through a lifetime of pain and that she was tough. It was why getting to know her was a tough thing to do. She learned that the hard way when she moved from Boston to Seattle.
"What do you mean? She had you didn't she?"
Derek tilted his head, "Sort of. But then she found out about my wife at the time and it all fell apart. She pushed me even farther."
Meredith had just confessed to him about her mother's condition when Addison strutted through the halls and introduced herself as Addison Shepherd.
"Could you blame her?" Maggie questioned.
"No, I can't. She rightfully pushed me out but I was too stubborn to be pushed," Derek shook his head, "But when we finally were together she let me in. Until her mother died. And then her father came back into the picture. She pushed again."
"That must've been hard."
He nodded, "It was. She's tough. She tries to hide, but with a little effort she's worth it."
"Yeah, she is," Maggie breathed.
Derek paused "I didn't think she'd let anyone in as much as she let you in after Lexie."
Maggie sat up straight in her seat, "What do you mean?"
"Well, when Lexie showed up, she pushed her too. Lexie was the painful reminder of everything she missed out on with her dad," his eyes made their way to the screen as he pictured a young Lexie. He missed her.
"She barely speaks about her," she said softly. Meredith barely mentioned her in fact they never had a proper conversation about Meredith's father or that side of her family. It was never brought up.
"Yeah. It's a sore spot. When the crash happened, she and Lexie had become thick as thieves. She loved her," Derek paused again as the images showed up, "It looks like a tumor. I'll have to go in."
Maggie nodded and still she asked, "Did she push again?"
Derek glanced at her, "No, not until we started to have problems-"
"And when I showed up," Maggie finished. It finally made sense to her.
Meredith Grey opened herself up to someone only to have them ripped away from her. No wonder she was so mean at the time.
Derek gave her a tight grin. There was no use in denying it.
"She pushed me away. Because Lexie was gone," Maggie continued
"You were a reminder of the childhood she could've had and the sister she lost."
Derek paused again and looked away, "It took me years to understand that. That she pushed because it reminded her of what she didn't have. That's why she's so protective of you and Amy and everyone she cares about."
Derek sighed, "Look, I just want to say that it's nice. I always wanted my wife to be surrounded by family and to know that people love her. Because they do. And they need her. And you need her. So, if talking about yours and Amy's sex life in my car with me in it is her way of keeping you close, I'll deal with it."
Maggie laughed and instructed the resident to help the patient back to their room.
She glanced at Derek again, "Were you close with Lexie?"
Derek nodded, "I was. She would call me her big brother. I nearly got her to commit to neuro too."
Maggie chuckled, "Well you make a good big brother."
"Thanks", he chuckled as a memory hit him, "You know, they're right about everyone knowing everything in that frat house."
"What do you mean?"
"I walked in on a naked Lexie waiting for Alex", Derek laughed.
Maggie's jaw dropped, "Oh God."
Derek scoffed, "Yeah."
He began to make his way out of his seat when Maggie's voice stopped him, "You know when I got here, you were the only one who was so excited about me being Meredith's sister."
He turned to look at her. He could still picture her heartbroken and determined to leave after the mess that happened after the revelation.
"Not Richard. Not Meredith. You," Maggie continued, "You embraced me so tightly that I finally felt at home."
Derek took a deep breath, "I come from a big family. I may be an ass to my kid sister every now and then but at the end of the day I love her. Family's important to me."
He smiled, "And you're family. My Zola adores you- all three of my kids do but especially Zola. You're more of a sister to Amy than any of her other sisters. And my wife loves you. You're family."
Maggie smiled. This was the most they had talked about Meredith and the most they had bonded.
"Thank you."
Derek smiled one last time before making his way out, "Anytime."
Guess spending time with the Sister Chiefs wasn't all too bad.
