Too little too late

Writing challenge. 3 words, 3 paras, 3 POV. "STEVE! GET DOWN!" Whump! Danny's life as he knew it changed after an unexpected injury. Would he be forced to give up his career and family or is there still light at the end of the tunnel? But no matter what, there is one constant in his life, Steve, who will get him through anything.

1. Chapter 1

"STEVE! GET DOWN!" The words came out of his mouth in a rush as his reflexes kicked in. He had almost missed the guy lurking behind a truck. He had a gun pointed straight at Steve. Without a second thought, he lunged himself towards his partner, pushing him down to the ground. The sound of a gunshot interrupted the peaceful night air. In an instant, a sharp pain erupted in his back as he fell on top of Steve. He found himself struggling to get a breath in. The pain was too much. Another gunshot. His eyes closed as he succumbed to the pain. This wasn't supposed to happen.

"STEVE! GET DOWN!" Steve witnessed Danny's face morph into panic as his eyes briefly glanced behind Steve. Whatever Danny had caught sight of had caused him to immediately jump into action. Three things happened at the same time. Danny pushed him to the ground. Danny fell on top of him and a gunshot was heard. Danny was lying limp on top of him and Steve could hear his partner's ragged breathing. Another gunshot erupted, originating from Lou's gun. Danny was still lying unmoving on top of him and he was beginning to feel fear creep in his heart. This wasn't supposed to happen.

"STEVE! GET DOWN!" Everything happened way too quickly. How had Danny seen it but he had completely missed the guy eyeing them from behind a truck when he was standing right next to Danny? The evident panic in Danny's voice had prompted him to reach out for his gun and aim it in the direction Danny was looking at. But he hadn't been fast enough. He saw Steve and Danny fall to the ground. He heard the gunshot. It was then that he spotted the guy and returned the favour. Lou shot him centre mass. He then turned to his colleagues on the ground. His face paled as he saw the blood seeping from a hole in Danny's back. He had been too little too late. This wasn't supposed to happen.
