A Girl Named Barriss
In a stony arena of sorts, two Pokemon clashed as they battled against each other. It was a Nidorino and a Gengar who were fighting. Nidorino is a light-purple quadrupedal Pokemon. It has several darker purple patches across its body. It has long, spiny ears with teal insides, narrow black eyes, and a long snout with two sharp teeth protruding from the upper jaw. Nidorino has a ridge of toxic spines on its back and a long, pointed horn on its forehead. Its short legs have three claws on each foot. Nidorino is an all male species of Pokemon.
Gengar, on the other hand, is a dark purple, bipedal Pokemon with a roundish body. It has red eyes, a wide mouth that is usually curled into a sinister grin, and pointed ears. On its back are numerous spikes and it has smaller spikes on top of its head similar to tufty fur. Its arms and legs are short with three digits on both its hands and feet. It also has a stubby tail.
The two Pokemon grunted out their names, which is basically Pokemon speaking in their native language known as Poke-Speak, as they tried to overpower each other. Eventually, Gengar used one of its attack moves to send Nidorino skidding back a few feet.
"Gengar used Double-Edge!" exclaimed the announcer for the battle.
As Nidorino quickly recovered from the Double-Edge and fired off a glowing purple spike-shaped blast from his horn which Gengar barely managed to dodge.
"Oh, and now it's Poison Sting from Nidorino! But Gengar immediately hopped back out of the way!"
"Barriss, are you there? Barriss!" called a woman's voice.
We now see that the battle between Gengar and Nidorino is actually happening on a computer screen. And watching that screen is a young girl who looks to be about ten, maybe ten and a half years old. She has wheat colored skin, long black hair that stops at her mid-back with two bangs framing her face, crystal blue eyes, and a pattern of dark brown diamonds tattooed across the bridge of her nose.(Her first and so far ONLY act of premature teenage rebellion.) Her outfit consisted of a blue-green shirt with no sleeves, a red skirt with a pair of black biker shorts underneath, baggy blue-green socks that stopped below her knees, a pair of red and white sneakers, and slung across her shoulder was a yellow bag used by Pokemon Trainers with a pink clip. To complete the outfit she wears a white hat with a red stripe across the rim, while in the center is another red stripe that resembles the top half of a Poke Ball.
This is Barriss of Pallet Town, the reborn fallen Jedi. Though she doesn't know that last part.
She had been watching a battle between a trainer who challenged the Kanto Elite Four when she heard her mother's voice calling from downstairs.
"Huh?... Yeah?" she called back.
"I ran into Professor Oak, and he gave me a message for you. He wants you to go to his lab as soon as possible." Barriss's Mother said.
"Professor Oak?" Barriss asked.
"He said he was finally finished with that thing he was telling you about, so-"
She was cut off by the sound of rapid movement and thuds coming from her daughter's room. The sounds she normally hears when Barriss is scrambling to get ready for something. Barriss quickly burst out of her bedroom with her hat in hand as she barely stopped herself from falling down the stairs. But it was clear her momentum hadn't been totally stopped as she struggled not to fall forward, having stopped on her toes… but it was a battle lost as gravity, being the cruel mistress of mother nature that she is, caused Barriss to fall forward with a startled yelp.
Barriss's Mother could only cringe and look away as her daughter took a nasty tumble down the stairs and hit the floor hard as she landed on her back.
"Are you alright?" Barriss's Mother asked, rightfully concerned.
The ten year old girl groaned from the pain of the impact, but sat up as she recovered quickly. What can she say? She's always had remarkably high pain tolerance for a child her age.
"Yeah, I'm okay." Barriss replied.
"You should really be more careful." Barriss's Mother said, lightly scolding her daughter.
Barriss just stood up and dusted off her hat as she placed it back on her head as she gave a nod to her mother. Too excited to say anything else, Barriss gave her mother a quick hug goodbye and left for the Oak Research Laboratory. Barriss's Mother simply closed her eyes and smiled at her daughter's antics. She takes after her father so much, as she remembers that he was the exact same way when they were just starting out as trainers themselves.
As Barriss ran through the quiet little town of Pallet she couldn't keep the grin off of her face. She'd been waiting for this day for so long and now it was finally here.
'Finally… finally, it's done! After all this time, it's really done!' Barriss cheered in her head.
She ran and ran until she finally came across a large building that she knew was Professor Oak's laboratory. The place where the good professor conducted his Pokemon research. And the whole time she just couldn't stop smiling… until she caught sight of someone running to the lab.
"Geki?"
"Oh, hey there Barriss."
Geki is a young boy about Barriss's age. He has brown hair that spikes upwards in a forward motion, brown eyes, and white skin. He wears a black muscle shirt under a collared green button-up shirt, a simple necklace with a charm on it, dark blue jeans, and a pair of black loafers. As Geki stopped a few feet in front of Barriss, he couldn't keep a sort of cocky tone out of his voice.
"Wait a second, did Gramps call you here too?" he asked.
"Yeah. I heard it's done." Barriss replied.
"Sorry, but I'm gonna go in first!" Geki said as he rushed in.
"Hey! No you don't!"
Barriss quickly started shoving Geki who shoved her back as the two struggled to beat the other to be first into the lab. A sight that wasn't an uncommon one amongst the many assistants to Professor Oak, who just looked up as the two children ran into the lab.
"Get off'a me, would'ja!" exclaimed Geki.
"Oh, like you've never shoved your way past me before? Besides, everyone knows that it's ladies first!" Barriss snapped back.
"Since when have you ever been a lady?" quipped Geki.
"YOU TAKE THAT BACK, BARBARIAN!" Barriss all but screeched in anger.
As they reached the middle of the room, the two friends/rivals locked arms with each other growling as they were very close to breaking into a physical fight between each other. And even Geki knows better than to let that happen. After all, Barriss hits hard!
"What's all the ruckus about?" asked a familiar voice.
Barriss and Geki stopped fighting long enough to see that Professor Oak was standing there with a welcoming smile on his face.
"Professor!/Gramps!" the kids exclaimed as they ran over to him. "Is it done?"
"Mm-hm. This is the Pokedex." Oak said with a nod.
He handed Barriss a small machine that was about the size of a Gameboy Advance SP when it's unfolded. It was red with a blue bulb in the upper left hand corner, and a yellow triangle that pointed to the right. Barriss took the device and held it as if it were the most fragile piece of machinery in the world.
"The Pokedex?"
"Yes. It automatically records the data on every Pokemon you've caught." Oak explained as Barriss opened hers to reveal a small screen and some buttons. "It's a high-tech encyclopedia."
"Science is so amazing!" Barriss said, unable to contain her excitement.
Geki was also astounded by the device, especially when he received one of his own.
"Barriss, Geki, listen… you'll each receive one Pokedex. I want you to do something very important." Oak said as he went into a small monologue. "To make a complete guide to all of the Pokemon in the world! That has always been my dream."
"It's been your dream?" asked Barriss.
To which the professor answered with a small nod.
"You see, the thing is I'm too old to do it. It's quite difficult to travel around the world seeking all kinds of Pokemon. So now I want the two of you to help fulfill my dream. Can I count on you?" Oak asked.
"Yes sir!" Barriss said without hesitation.
"Now Gramps, you haven't forgotten your promise right? In exchange for us helping you out with this?" Geki asked anxiously.
Oak simply smiled at his grandson and said "I haven't forgotten it."
Barriss made a noise of awe as her smile seemed to grow. This could mean only one thing: she and Geki were finally going to get them! Their very first Pokemon! Both hers and Geki's attention was drawn to a desk as lights lit up above it to reveal a set of three Poke Balls. Each one having an insignia carved into it. One had a leaf, one had a flame, and the other had a cascade to symbolize water.
"As you can see there are three Pokemon here. I'll give each of you the opportunity to choose one." Oak said.
A light grew brighter over one of the Poke Balls as specialized scanners did their job and showed an image of the Pokemon inside on a big TV screen. It was a small orange and yellow lizard Pokemon with green eyes, and a flame burning at the tip of its tail.
"The fire Pokemon, Charmander."
The next Pokemon to be shown resembled a light blue turtle with a brown shell, and a curly tail.
"The water Pokemon, Squirtle."
And the final Pokemon was a small mammalian Pokemon with light blue skin, green markings on its body, the stance of a frog, and a large flower bud growing out of its back.
"The plant Pokemon, Bulbasaur."
Geki and Barriss stood a little closer to the desk where the Poke Balls were resting, both of them obviously excited to get the chance at choosing their own Pokemon.
"Now then, you may choose the one that you like." Oak said.
"You know what, you were so all about that chivalry earlier so you can pick first, Barriss." Geki said with a teasing grin aimed at his tattooed friend. "Like you said at the door, ladies first."
"Don't patronize me." Barriss said with a scowl.
"Now think carefully before you choose." Oak advised.
"I don't have to. I already know which one I want." Barriss said, taking one of the Poke Balls.
Specifically, the one with a flame insignia carved into it.
"Oh, Charmander?" Oak inquired.
"That's right! It wasn't really a touch decision. You see, the thing is, my mom and dad have always told me ever since I was a little girl that my spirit burns with the passion and energy of a red hot flame. And so I've decided that my first Pokemon should be a fire Pokemon that will help me truly bring about that flaming spirit my parents say I have." Barriss passionately explained.
With a mighty toss, Barriss sent the Poke Ball into the air where it opened up and her Charmander was released in a small plume of flame.
"Chaaar!" the lizard Pokemon growled cutely.
"Oh my!... It's just so adorable!" squealed Barriss.
She caught Charmander in her arms and immediately started nuzzling her starter, who gave cute growls and purred at the attention and love it was receiving.
"I see. Well then, Geki, are you going to choose Squirtle because you have a tendency to go with the flow and change like the flow of water?" Oak asked.
But Geki just gave a laugh at that question.
"I would never use something as ridiculous of Poetry as a means of choosing my Pokemon." he said with a scoff. "But since Barriss chose fire, then I will choose water!"
Geki picked up and threw Squirtle's Poke Ball as the Tiny Turtle Pokemon was released in a splash of water and fell into Geki's awaiting arms.
"Squirtle!" it squeaked.
Geki gave a chuckle as he caught his Pokemon in his arms.
"You know, you can give your Pokemon a nickname should you so choose." Oak said.
"A nickname. Okay, let's see… Wait, how will we name our Pokemon if we don't know if they're boys or girls?" Barriss asked, as she was actually considering giving her Charmander a nickname.
"You bring up an excellent point, Barriss. You see, along with the data of the Pokemon you catch, your Pokedex can also tell you the gender of your Pokemon along with what moves they know." Oak explained. "But you won't have to do that because I already know the genders of the Pokemon you two have chosen. Barriss, your Charmander is a girl while Geki has a boy Squirtle."
Hearing this causes Barriss to smile as she's already got the perfect name in mind for her Charmander.
"Okay then, if that's the case I think I'll give my Charmander the nickname Cynder. But with a 'Y' to make it more unique." she said.
And the newly dubbed Cynder seemed to agree as she purred and nuzzled Barriss.
"Barriss, what do you say? Shall we test them out?" Geki asked before giving a slightly condescending smirk. "Eh, never mind. I wouldn't want the memory of my first battle to be against a measly beginner like you."
"YOU'RE A BEGINNER TOO, SO STOP ACTING ALL HIGH AND MIGHTY!" yelled Barriss in outrage.
But Geki didn't let his friend/rival's obvious anger intimidate him.
"Maybe I am a beginner, but my ambitions are far greater than yours. Now that I have this Squirtle, you'll see. I'll become the best Pokemon trainer in the whole world." Geki said as he started heading out the door. "Well Gramps, I gotta go!"
"Alright! It's okay to aim high, but don't forget my request!" Oak said, reminding Geki about the Pokedex.
"Leave it all to me! I got it covered!" Geki said confidently.
Though there was a touch of arrogance in there. But with everything said and done, Geki walked out of the Oak Laboratory and went back home to prepare for his journey.
"Oh my…" sighed Oak.
"He's your grandson after all, Professor." a female assistant quipped.
"Yes, well the truth is when I was young I was a serious Pokemon trainer as well." Oak admitted.
Hearing that caused the full weight of Barriss's new life to finally sink in.
"Pokemon… Trainer…" she said breathlessly.
"Char!" squeaked Cynder.
"Well Barriss, I'm counting on you." Oak said.
Barriss smiled as her confidence returned. She adjusted her hat and gave a firm nod as she seemed ready to take on any challenge that came her way.
"Of course!" she said with confidence.
