Prologue: A New Mission
"I'm sorry, but you're sending us off to do what?"
Shinji, Rei, and Asuka were all gathered in Major Misato Katsuragi's office being briefed on a mission that they were being assigned outside of Tokyo-3, strange as that sounds. Usually they're not deployed unless there's an Angel attacking the Geofront and even then, it's usually only one or two pilots at a time. This was mostly due to the fact that the EVA units weren't exactly invincible fighting machines. Far from it, obviously, and they only had three of them so it was wise to have at least one hang back until it was absolutely necessary.
But I digress.
The three pilots looked at the purple haired woman with looks of confusion in Shinji and Asuka's case, and the usual emotionless facade as is the case with Rei. Had they heard her instructions right?
"You heard me. Your mission is to enter into the school known as Duel Academy and investigate the disappearances of several students. Chancellor Shepard himself asked for you three to investigate under the guise of new students." Misato explained.
"Okay, but why the three of us specifically?" Shinji asked, though he wasn't opposed to the idea since it was just investigation and didn't involve killing.
"For once, I agree with Baka-Shinji. Why call for three EVA pilots to investigate the missing students, I mean isn't that what campus security or even proper law enforcement is for?" Asuka asked while insulting Shinji, as usual.
"They would have gone to the usual authorities if these disappearances were caused by normal means. However, the Chancellor and even Seto Kaiba have reason to believe that these disappearances were caused by dark magic." said Misato.
Asuka raised an eyebrow and scoffed.
"Magic? Puh-leeze, magic doesn't exist!"
"I would not rule magic out just yet, Pilot Soryu." Rei said in her usual monotone. "If you recall the stories from Seto Kaiba's days as a duelist, then you know of the magic of the seven Millennium Items and the Shadow Games that were waged back in the time of legendary duelists such as Seto Kaiba, Joey Wheeler, and the King of Games himself, Yugi Moto. Therefore it is not impossible for magic to be involved in these disappearances somehow."
Asuka breathed an annoyed sigh through her nose. She hated to admit it, but the doll had a point. She may need to keep an open mind about this whole situation.
But that doesn't mean she has to like it.
"Okay now, since you three will be going in as new applicants to Duel Academy as part of your cover, each of you will receive a deck of Duel Monster cards to use as your own. Duel Academy has a card shop on the island, so if you ever feel the need you can customize your decks however you want. And you can even build new decks to suit your dueling style whenever you choose." Misato said.
She opened a drawer in her desk and took out three decks of Duel Monster cards. Handing each one to the three pilots, she explained what each deck was.
"Asuka, your deck is filled mostly with warrior type and fire attribute monsters, and uses fusion summoning to bring out some of the heavy hitters that you will need in later duels." Misato said to the redhead pilot.
Asuka nodded with a grin as she saw no problems with the deck presently. Besides, she could always look through the deck to see what she's got and edit it as she sees fit later.
"Rei, your deck is filled with high power monsters along with having different spell cards that can help restore your life points in a pinch." Misato said to Rei.
The albino girl merely nodded as she accepted the cards and placed them in the provided deck case. Finally, Misato handed the last deck to Shinji.
"And last, but certainly not least, Shinji. Your deck is filled with lots of monsters with special abilities along with having monsters for a new summon type called Synchro summoning. I've included an updated rule book with your deck so you'll know what to do."
"Yes Ma'am." Shinji said as he accepted his cards.
"Now, all of you go home and rest for the entrance exam tomorrow. A ship will be waiting to take you to Domino City where you'll travel on foot to the Kaiba Dome to take your entrance exams." Misato explained. "Now, you're dismissed. Shinji, I'd like you to stay behind for a moment."
Though a little concerned, the only boy among the three pilots nodded and stayed behind while Rei and Asuka left to go and prepare for the mission.
"I'm not going to lie to you, Shinji. There's more than one reason why you three are going on this mission, and it's not a good one." Misato began. "I'm afraid that the commander, your father, is up to something. Something that has to do with the initiation of a third impact."
"Third impact? Why would he want to create a third impact when the first two nearly wiped out all of humanity and locked the Earth into a perpetual state of summer?" Shinji asked, more afraid than confused.
He's heard stories about those who survived the second impact and even the first, and he knows that the results are not pretty. Especially not for those he cares about.
...He's seen Misato's scar.
It was a brief glimpse when she was wearing one of her shorter shirts, but he still saw the scar. A scar from an event that should never have been triggered. Misato, knowing that her office wasn't bugged(she checked very, very, VERY thoroughly) quickly turned off the audio recorders of the security cameras that she knew were hidden in her office using a small device hidden in her sleeve. It created a barely noticeable EMP wave that short circuited the cameras and their microphones so they couldn't be seen or heard.
With a heavy sigh, the purple haired major began to explain.
"A very reliable source of mine told me this, and you mustn't breathe a word of it to anyone outside this office. Is that clear?" Misato asked, getting a nod in return. "Good. Now, as I'm sure you know NERV is a military faction ran by your father with the intention of destroying the Angels that you've been fighting for so long now. But that's only a cover story. Commander Ikari answers to the true leaders of NERV; a group of men calling themselves SEELE. Their endgame is to initiate a Third Impact so that they can gain immortality and rule over the Earth as gods."
Standing up from her chair, Misato walked around to the front of her desk with a grim look on her face.
"However, the commander has plans of his own for the Third Impact. He plans to use it to bring his wife, your mother, back to him so that they may be together forever. To him everyone and everything is expendable so long as his own goals are achieved."
Shinji just stood there in shock. This was all a lot to take in, but strangely enough, it didn't really surprise him. Top secret military groups like these always have some hidden agenda that they don't want the public knowing about. He'd be surprised if there wasn't. And he always knew that his father… Gendo… never loved him as a father should love their children. He's never hidden it even when he was a small child and his mother conducted the contact experiment with Unit 01. But to think that he and this SEELE group would be willing to go so far to reach their goals…
It gave Shinji the shudders just thinking about it.
"That's why I'm sending you kids to Duel Academy in the first place. Mostly as a way to keep you relatively safe until myself and a few others can come up with a plan to stop these maniacs."
Misato started to tear up as she brought the boy into a hug.
"I've already lost so many people who were close to me in my life. My father… Kaji… I don't want to lose you either!" she said as tears gathered in the corners of her eyes.
"You won't lose us, Misato. I promise. We'll all come home safe." Shinji reassured as he returned the hug.
The woman tightened her embrace a little, but not enough to the point that she'd suffocate the boy. Both of them had become like family to each other and honestly couldn't imagine their lives without one another anymore. The Angels may not have been as active as they once were, possibly biding their time for a bigger strike, but who's to say that someone from SEELE or even the Commander wouldn't try something?
Reluctantly, they broke the hug as Misato sent Shinji off to get ready for his mission at Duel Academy. And as the boy left her office and NERV headquarters, she sincerely hoped that what Mister Pegasus told her was true… and that these Signers really would rise up and save the world in its darkest hour from a threat that, by comparison, makes the Angels seem like elementary school children throwing a tantrum.
