Talk with a Hero
It's been a week since Izuku defeated that sludge villain and saved Bakugo from being smothered to death and made into a skin suit. Since then, Izuku has been training to truly master and overcome the limitations of his quirk. And while doing this, he also started a physical workout routine in order to ensure that his body is as strong as his mind. Since he's a psychic type Pokemon, he's more inclined to non-physical combat and as such needs to build up his physical strength. To do so, he went to Dagobah Municipal Beach. A stretch of shoreline that was once a pristine paradise for tourists who were looking to just relax and hang out. And a place where people could just go to unwind after a hard day's work, or for people to spend summer vacation with their families.
But everything changed when trash that people recklessly dumped into the sea started being swept up onto the shore by the currents. This garbage quickly started piling up until it got so bad that people decided to just start dumping their own garbage there and turned it into a makeshift landfill. Everything was thrown out here, from used needles and syringes to broken down washing machines and refrigerators. It was truly a terrible sight to behold, especially for the people who used to love going to that beach.
When he first got there, Izuku decided to start cleaning up the beach as not only a way to workout and build up physical strength, but also as a form of community service. He always did so in his Mewtwo form so that he could get adjusted to transforming while speeding up the transformation time, and to get used to using his powers in this form. Using his Confusion attack he started out small by finding and removing all of the smaller waste from the makeshift landfill. This ensured that when he decided to move on to the bigger stuff he wouldn't accidentally impale his feet on stray needles or slice them open on broken glass and rusty scalpels.
Also the perfect way to avoid getting tetanus.
"Why the people decided it would be a good idea to turn what was once a beautiful stretch of beach into a freaking landfill, I'll never know." Izuku telepathically, and angrily, muttered to himself as he disposed of the various pieces of small trash. "Well, at least I have someone to help me with my training while at the same time bringing this stuff to the correct facilities so that it can all be disposed of properly."
"You know, if you keep mumbling to yourself like that people are gonna think you're insane."
And of course, there was an unforeseen but not unwelcome bonus to his training. All Might was there helping train Izuku in building up his strength, speed, stamina, and quirk usage. Now, you all might be wondering why that is. Well, it all happened not long after Izuku laid the smackdown on the sludge villain…
Flashback…
Izuku was now walking back home after he used his quirk to the fullest for the first time in years and saved Katsuki from the horrible fate of being killed and turned into a literal skin suit. Lucky for him, it seems like the heroes don't seem to mind that he used his quirk in a way that would classify him as a vigilante. Probably because they were desperate for the help and it was a life or death situation. If they wanted to have words with him about it, they surely would have caught up to him and given him a real hard time by now. And that's something that young Midoriya was in no mood for.
Then of course there's the highly likely possibility of encountering Katsuki who will no doubt be in one of his moods due to him being saved by the 'Deku with a Worthless Quirk' as he'll probably say. And that's a whole other can of worms that Izuku really doesn't feel like dealing with at this time, if ever. Because no matter what Izuku will say to him, the exploding teen's rage-filled mind will not accept any explanation no matter how much logic one uses.
Believe me, Izuku's tried.
But as he walked home he couldn't stop thinking about the heroes on the scene and how all but Backdraft were just standing there doing nothing. Crowd control is important, yes, but Katsuki was dying because of that slime villain and no one was doing anything to try and help. They were just standing around, waiting for someone with an appropriate quirk to show up and do their jobs for them. Isn't being a hero about protecting those who can't protect themselves, even if you get hurt or killed trying? He's starting to see a serious flaw in regards to heroes who remain in the limelight like most heroes do.
Perhaps if he is ever confronted by any of those heroes again he'll talk some sense into them. Or maybe use his psychic powers to show them the consequences that most assuredly would have some of their inaction. That'll surely get the message across.
"I AM HERE! ARRIVING AS A HERO WITH SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO SAY!"
Izuku jumped back in surprise, eyes wide as All Might suddenly emerged from an alley. It took a moment for him to get his heart rate back under control, but by that time he was more curious than startled.
"All Might? Not that it's not amazing to see you again, but why are you here? Shouldn't you be out patrolling or dealing with news crews?" asked Izuku.
All Might just gave his iconic laugh in response.
"I stand for justice, Not soundbites." he said as he started flexing theatrically. "Because, I am All Migh-"
The hero was cut off as he suddenly coughed up blood. Izuku was forced to shield himself with his arms as a thick cloud of steam was released from All Might. He could have created a bubble of psychic energy, sure, but his gut told him that this wasn't something that would jeopardize his safety. And he often trusted those gut feelings. When it was over he opened his eyes and gasped in shock, nearly screaming his head off at what he was seeing.
In place of the Number One Hero in Japan, maybe even the whole world, was a complete stick of a man who looked like he'd fall to pieces at the slightest breeze! He was emaciated from serious malnutrition, and his blue eyes were sunken from possible dehydration. He had shaggy blonde hair and was wearing the same clothing that All Might had been wearing just a moment ago, only they were much too baggy on his thin frame and the shirt now had a huge blood stain.
"Aw crap, this was my last good shirt!" the man complained.
"What the? All Might?!" gasped Izuku.
Of all the things to happen to him today, finding out All Might's true identity certainly wasn't at the top of that list. The now deflated All Might sighed and waved Izuku over to an alley where they could speak away from prying eyes and ears. The greenette raised an eyebrow but sensed no ill intentions, so he followed the man. Once they were behind a dumpster, All Might leaned against a wall and let out a deep sigh as he felt more tired than he usually did during days like these.
"In this form, call me by my real name. Toshinori Yagi. And I can assure you I am the real All Might. This is what you'd call my true form while the buff form that everyone is familiar with? That's the form I take when I'm doing hero work." he explained. "Let me show you the reason that I'm the way I am now."
Toshinori pulled up his overly baggy shirt and revealed a rather nasty sight to Izuku. A large and ugly scar that ran from the left side of his chest down most of his abdominal area. If the young lad was being honest the sight of that scar almost made him want to puke. It was only through a combination of shock, morbid fascination, and sheer willpower that he didn't. And it seemed like Toshinori could tell this right off the bat.
"Pretty gross, huh? Got this from a villain that I fought five years ago. I defeated him, but he gave me this to remember him by. He destroyed most of my respiratory system and I lost most of the functionality of my stomach, which is how and why I've become so emaciated like I am. But that's also because of all of the surgeries I've undergone just to stay alive. My body is exhausted, and as a result of all of the surgeries I've gone through I can only do hero work for literally three hours a day. Thanks to your intervention I was able to last long enough to find you again." explained Toshinori.
Izuku put a hand to his chin and said "Five years ago, huh? Was that the fight with Toxic Chainsaw, or someone else?"
"Oh, you know your stuff, huh? That punk couldn't take me on and win!" Toshinori replied. "The guy who did this to me was much, much stronger than any villain that you're probably familiar with, but I chose to keep that fight and the existence of that villain a secret from the public. If anyone found out about this guy even if he's gone, it could create mass mayhem and panic throughout not just Japan, but maybe the whole world!"
Toshinori sighed and ran a hand over his face.
"You know how I always have that big smile on my face whenever I'm in my All Might persona, yes?" Toshinori asked getting a nod in return. "Contrary to popular belief that smile isn't one of a man with no fear. I smile BECAUSE I'm afraid. Being a Pro Hero is a very dangerous profession and even the best of us feel fear. It's just part of human nature. Yet despite my fear I smile to help the people around me feel safe and help stave off the fear as I rescue people in danger and fight off the villains that wish to do them harm."
Izuku just stood there in stunned silence. To hear his longtime idol admit that he smiles BECAUSE he's afraid was something of an eye-opener for him.
"I saw how you went to save your friend from that villain earlier." Toshinori said, getting Izuku's attention. "I was about to transform and intervene, but then you, a kid no older than fifteen, ran out and tried to help when the heroes didn't. You did something that all of the greatest heroes of the past have in common. They rushed in to help people without conscious thought: like their bodies moved on their own. You have that same heroic spirit that all of those other past heroes had in their day. That's why I'd like to make you an offer."
"An offer?" Izuku asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yup. An offer to become my successor, and to inherit my quirk." Toshinori replied.
If Izuku had been able, he would have pulled out his phone and played the classic record scratch noise.
"Wait, what? What do you mean by 'inherit' your quirk?" he asked with wide eyes.
Toshinori laughed, coughing up a little bit more blood in the process.
"I kind of expected this kind of reaction. You see, young man, contrary to popular belief I wasn't born with this quirk. It was passed on to me by the previous holder like a sacred torch. Most people speculate that my quirk is some kind of strength or speed enhancer, but whenever I'm asked about it or it's brought up in conversation I just change the subject with a clever joke or act like there's an emergency elsewhere and book it out of there. In truth, my quirk is a very unique one that has two abilities. The first is that it can be passed down from one user to the next, like how my master did the same for me. The second ability is that the quirk functions as a stockpiler as it adds the accumulated power of the previous holders onto the current one. It's an ultra powerful quirk that goes by what I think is a rather fitting name. And that name is… One For All." Toshinori explained.
"One… For… All…" gasped Izuku.
End Flashback…
And so, Izuku accepted All Might's proposal and became his unofficial apprentice. Not only would he be the one to eventually inherit One For All, but Izuku would also be trained for the upcoming UA Entrance Exam. And both he and All Might knew that he couldn't just rely on One For All in the exam, hence the extra training with Izuku's true quirk, which is simply called Mewtwo for… obvious reasons.
"Perhaps they will, but we've all got to be a little crazy in this day and age." Izuku said telepathically.
All Might chuckled and pulled out his cellphone while asking Izuku to turn back to his human self for a moment. Though curious as to why he was being asked this, the greenette complied and reverted back to human form. Since he wasn't wearing a shirt for the purpose of his workout routine one could easily see that he was actually quite skinny for his age, likely in part due to his quirk burning so many calories to fuel his psychic powers. Izuku just blinked as Toshinori took a picture of him from the waist up.
"Now, even though you have the heart of a hero you're not quite ready for my quirk yet." he said.
Izuku merely raised a questioning eyebrow at that statement, his calm and collected Mewtwo persona still in place. Fortunately, All Might instantly caught the unasked question and gave the boy an explanation.
"What I mean by that is that your body isn't ready yet. It's too weak in its current state so we need to train you up to build up your strength, endurance, stamina, and other such stats to the point where you'll be able to handle my power. If you were to be given One For All in your current state then your body wouldn't be able to handle eight generations worth of power being suddenly introduced to it, and it's likely you'd either explode or blow your limbs off!"
'Blow my limbs off?!' Izuku mentally gasped.
He shuddered and cringed at the mental images of his arms and legs flying off of his body with geysers of blood soon following.
"So that's why you're having me clean up this beach, right? To act as my own personal workout program?" Izuku asked.
"Correct." All Might said with a nod. "Let me tell you something…"
He walked over to a discarded washing machine as he began to explain some things.
"I did a little online research and found out that once upon a time this beach used to be a beautiful place that everyone could enjoy." he said.
"Yeah. But then the ocean currents started washing trash up onto the beach and then everyone just used it as an easy dumping ground for their trash. Eventually, it became the landfill that it is today." Izuku said.
"That's right, Young Midoriya." All Might said.
He placed his hand on the washing machine causing an enormous dent to appear in it.
"Most heroes these days only focus on fighting the villains that people see every day, but back before the age of quirks it was one's service to the community that made people the REAL heroes. People would do things like clean up litter, plant a public garden, and lots of other things even if it was boring." All Might said as he effortlessly crushed the washing machine into a tiny ball of scrap. "We've got ten months before the UA entrance exam to get you ready for my quirk. In that timeframe you'll be cleaning this entire stretch of beach that I've marked for you. Once you've done that, you'll no doubt be ready for my quirk."
Izuku looked at the goal set before him and could already tell that it was going to be a challenge.
"How will I monitor my progress, exactly? Do you have some kind of a plan?" Izuku asked.
All Might gave Izuku his signature smile and pulled a clipboard seemingly out of nowhere.
"I'm glad you asked, Young Midoriya. I have a plan that will get you ready in no time at all! I call it my 'American Dream Plan'!" he said as he handed the clipboard to Izuku. "Follow this schedule to the letter and you'll be ready by the time that the UA entrance exam rolls around!"
'Wow, even my sleep is scheduled!...'
But this didn't intimidate Izuku. Instead, it invoked his own instinctual love of a challenge as he knew he'd have to give it his all, plus ultra, if he was going to accomplish this.
And so, his ten months of hell on earth officially began!...
