Reagan was not at all pleased when Bethany's communicator went off the next morning. She had hoped the girl would turn it off when she left for her shift that night, but it appeared she was out of luck. She slowly dragged herself from the fort she called her bed and threw on her cadet uniform, followed by her favorite phaser. She had a feeling she would need it.
The girl quickly chowed down on some pretzels from Bethany's stash before making her way to the overhead room above the simulator. She wasn't surprised to find that she was the first one there. She sat at her desk typing in her password before selecting the scenario that Jim and other cadets would be facing that afternoon.
She wasn't overly excited to see Jim fail again, but she was glad that Bethany wouldn't have to see make believe creatures die. It was the worst thing she has ever seen. She programmed a couple other unique signals for the simulator before moving to check the wiring. Her inspection came up normal, much to her relief, and was happy to report to her coworkers as soon as they came in.
Commander Spock entered the room only seconds later and was not amused by her attempt to get him to smile. The girl had pulled yet another of her iconic funny faces and it made the others laugh but not him. Long ago she had made a bet with Nyota that she could make the Vulcan smile. So far Nyota was winning big time.
"Is everything ready for the first cadet?"
"Ready as they'll ever be. Who's the first poor soul?"
"Cadet James T. Kirk."
Reagan walked over and watched people filed into the room, looking rather uneasy. Nypta had been cast as the translator, while Leonard sat in as the weapons specialist. The doctor looked her way and she sent him a winning smile too which he only rolled his eyes. Reagan made her way over to her station and soon as everything was in place she dimmed the lights and started the simulation.
"We're receiving a distress signal from the USS Kobayashi Maru. The ship has lost power and is stranded. Starfleet Command has ordered us to rescue them." Nyota announced, clearly not amused at doing this for a third time.
Jim appeared unbothered as he turned in his chair, "Starfleet Command has ordered us to rescue them, Captain."
Nyota was not amused and Leonard quickly jumped in, "Two Klingon vessels have entered the neutral zone and are locking weapons on us."
"That's okay."
"That's okay?"
"Yeah, don't worry about it." Jim responded as he took a bite out of a red apple he had hid in his pocket.
Reagan had to slap her hand across her mouth to keep from wheezing at Jim's response. She knew he was calm under the best of circumstances, their last trip to LA was proof of that, but this was different. He genuinely seemed unconcerned and Reagan was partly amused and the other side of her was intrigued.
"Did he say don't worry about it?" One of her coworkers asked.
The other looked just as perturbed, "Is he not taking the simulation seriously?"
Reagan looked over at them, "With Jim it's always Error: Fucks Not Found."
Neither of them were amused by her statement, but she didn't care. Instead she looked over at Spock only to find him watching Jim intensely. Reagan knew that Jim's behavior had set the Vulcan on edge and she could only pray that the idiot got it together before he did some real damage.
"Three more Klingon warbirds are decloaking and targeting our ship. I don't suppose this is a problem either." Leonard announced looking at Jim.
"They're firing, Captain."
"Alert medical bay to prepare to receive all crew members from the damaged ship." Jim started looking to Nyota for confirmation.
"And how do you expect us to rescue them when we're surrounded by Klingons, Captain."
Jim only smirked at the blunt annoyance in her tone, "Alert medical."
"Our ship is being hit. Shields at sixty percent." Leonard said, looking at his hologram.
"I understand."
"Well should we, I don't know, fire back?" Leonard swivels his chair to look Jim in the eye.
"No."
"Of course not."
Reagan watched the whole exchange in pure amusement until the lights began to flicker around the room. The woman turned in her chair to find her screen going haywire and she quickly stood up to go towards the master board. Her other coworkers stood around in wonder as Reagan made an effort to save and restart the simulation. In a couple seconds the computers returned to normal and it was as if nothing had happened.
"What is this? What's going on?"
Reagan looked over at Spock only to find that his eyes hadn't left Jim as he swiveled in his chair. He seemed oddly calm even during the power surge and although Reagan would like to credit that to his nerves, she knew better. She returned back to her station to watch how the rest of the simulation played out, but this time she wasn't in a gaming mood. Someone had messed with her game and she was not happy,
"Hmm... arm photons, prepare to fire on the Klingon warbirds." Jim orders, looking up at Reagan and sending her a wink.
"Pompous ass." Reagan mutters, but receives a disapproving look from Spock.
"Yes, sir."
"Jim, their shields are still up." Leonard states.
"Are they?" Jim asked.
"No. They're not." Leonard deadpanned while stealing a glance up at Reagan. Her pissed off face was all he needed to see to know that Jim was screwed later.
"Fire on all enemy ships. One photon each should do it, so don't waste ammunition."
"Target locked and acquired on all warbirds. Firing."
Reagan watched unsatisfied as all of her holographic war birds were destroyed with one torpedo. Even though she knew that it would take at least two to actually get the job done. The woman sat back in her chair as Jim made the announcement that he won, leaving Reagan to smile in anger. All of her coworkers were muttering in awe and disbelief, but only one had the guts to face Spock.
"How the hell did that kid beat your test?"
Spock raised an eyebrow, "I do not know."
