The Hoenn Princess

"There you are!"

"Morpek?!" Morpeko had his face stuffed with berries as he looked up from a berry bush to see Zach and Scorbunny standing only a few inches away from him.

"There's no escape this time, Double Kick!" Zach and Dawn had done a bit of battling practice with one another so that she'd have a good sense of Piplup and Buneary's moves during the upcoming contest, during the training session Scorbunny had managed to learn the Fighting type attack while fending off against Buneary's Dizzy Punch! Buneary appeared to have quite the move set for a new Pokemon and he was rather happy for his friend as he was certain she'd win the upcoming contest with Buneary by her side!

"Scor!" Scorbunny leaped at Morpeko before kicking both his feet against the small rodent, pushing it back as yellow sparks began sparking out from Morpeko's cheeks. The rodent let out a shout before firing off multiple bolts of electricity at Scorbunny, delivering quite the shock to the rabbit Pokemon as she cried out in pain.

"Scorbunny, you okay?!" Zach called out in concern for his newest Pokemon, Scorbunny shook herself before flashing him a cocky smirk and gave a thumbs up.

"Scor!"

Scorbunny opened up her mouth and fired off a series of small fire balls at her opponent, Morpeko let out a cry as his fur caught fire and quickly rolled around to kill the flame before leaping on up as his eyes turned demonic red while his fur turned a dark purple coloring.

"Morpek!" Morpeko cried out, the blue ball of energy forming around his body as he began charging at his opponent and blasting her away upon impact!

"Scor!" Scorbunny flew through the air before landing in her trainer's grasp as he leaped out to catch her, swirls were visible in the Fire type's eyes as Zach grit his teeth lightly. That Morpeko sure was something...

"Riolu, let's go!"

"Rio!" Riolu leaped from his side and landed on the battlefield as Scorbunny was returned to her Pokeball, the jackal was quick to get into a combat stance as he locked eyes with the troublesome rodent.

"Morpek!" Morpeko growled out, giving him a leer but Riolu didn't budge. Morpeko let out a shout as the energy ball formed around him once more, the rodent beginning to blast off towards Riolu!

"Hold your ground, once it's close enough I want you to fire off a Force Palm and send him flying!" Riolu gave his trainer a light nod and waited for Morpeko to get closer as he held out his arm, ready to strike! Once Morpeko was inches away Riolu took a swing, striking Morpeko's body with the palm of his fist as a light blue blast fired from his paw, halting Morpeko in his tracks before sending him flying into the trunk of a nearby tree, smacking against it with a hard thud as Zach clenched his fist from excitement.

"Alright Riolu!"

"Rio!" Riolu leaped up for joy as the two high fived before Zach proceeded to throw a Pokeball, the ball flew through the air and struck Morpeko as it began recovering from the impact. Morpeko's body became engulfed in a bright red light as he was absorbed into the Pokeball, the ball hit the forest floor and began to shake as Zach and Riolu watched on with anticipation as they hoped that the rodent would stay in. This wasn't their first time attempting to catch it, they'd encountered it a second time prior to this encounter and after breaking out he proceeded to blast Zach and Dawn right off along with their Pokemon! Thankfully their prayers were answered as the Pokeball chimed out and Zach felt his Rotom Phone vibrate to indicate the registration of Morpeko into his Pokedex!

Dawn let out a cheer. "Way to go Zach, you did it!"

Barry suddenly raced from the bushes, both him and Chimchar covered in dirt as they looked frantically around. "Where's that Morpeko?!" Dawn pointed towards Zach with a light smirk as Barry let out a gasp. "No way, you caught Morpeko?! I ought to fine you, I had my eyes set on that Morpeko!"

"Zach did see it before you did," Dawn noted.

Zach nodded in response. "Yeah and after seeing it in action there was no way I'd turn down the opportunity of catching it!"

Barry puffed his cheeks from annoyance before looking away. "Hmp, well I'll still beat you to getting my first badge! You better not stay behind too long or else I'll be forced to fine you, later!" Barry waved before him and Chimchar raced right off, both full of energy as they aimed to win their first badge before their rival did!

Zach picked up the Pokeball and looked down at it before looking up at her as he gave off a smile. "And now it's your turn for a win Dawn, let's get to Jubilife City you've got a Contest to win!"

Jubilife City was quite an impressive sight to be hold, it may not be the biggest city in Sinnoh but to two trainers who've lived in a small town their entire lives this was a major step up! Even the smallest buildings were twice as tall as the ones in their hometown and the Pokemon Center and Pokemarts were far larger than the ones in Sandgem Town! Buildings stretched up into the sky above and at night some would even be lit up in colorful lights!

The two decided to stop by the Pokemon Center before making their way to the Contest Hall in order to perform a check up on their Pokemon and upon entering they were met with a surprise.

"Nurse Joy?! Why aren't you in Sandgem Town?" Dawn gasped.

Nurse Joy let out a light giggle before shaking her head. "That Nurse Joy is my cousin," She pointed to a picture on the wall behind her where they could see a bunch of Nurse Joy, it was almost as if they were all clones as they all looked so similar with no visual difference whatsoever! "A lot of my cousins and sisters are also Nurse Joys, it's a family profession." She explained as Zach and Dawn flashed one another a glance while lightly sweating.

"I see..." Zach handed her the Pokeballs containing Morpeko and Scorbunny while Dawn handed her Buneary's. The two then gave Riolu and Piplup an awkward glance as both gave a 'don't even try it' look.

"Nurse Joy, our two Pokemon don't like going into their Pokeballs. Is it still possible to heal them outside of it?" Dawn questioned.

"Of course, follow me little ones." Nurse Joy beckoned to Riolu and Piplup as they followed her behind the counter and into the backroom, after a few moments Nurse Joy returned and returned their Pokeballs as Riolu and Piplup took their rightful places back by their trainer's sides. Nurse Joy then gave a light bow as she smiled. "Thank you, hope to see you again!"

Dawn and Zach exited the Pokemon Center with their Pokemon right behind them as they started making their way to the Contest Hall, it wasn't too difficult to find as it stood out due to being the only building big enough and wide enough to house both a stage and a large audience! As they reached the Contest Hall Dawn paused before looking to Zach. "I have to register for my Contest Pass and it looks like there's a bit of a line, why don't you go ahead and gather up some supplies for us?" She suggested, she knew he'd stay if she asked but she was more concerned for their personal space. Both of them were related to celebrities and in a big city like this, people were sure to recognize them. Dawn's mother was a Top Coordinator and a quite popular one at that while Zach's aunt was Cynthia and his cousin was dating the World Champion! Together they were bound to attract a lot more attention than they would separately and Dawn was more worried for Zach's case as over the years she had to chase away several girls who intended on using him to meet Cynthia!

"I can stay-" Zach immediately piped up as he didn't feel right leaving Dawn alone.

"Please Zach? I don't want to keep you waiting." Dawn gave him puppy eyes resulting in him quickly giving in.

"A-Alright, I'll go. Want me to pick up anything special for you?" Dawn looked thoughtful for a moment as she wondered if there was anything different than usual that she'd need.

"Nah, I'm good! Do be careful though, it's a big place."

"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine!" Zach smiled lightly and gave her a light wave before he and Riolu walked off to go track down some supplies.

"Alright I think that's everything, right?" Zach turned to Riolu who was quick to give him a nod in confirmation.

"Rio!"

"Okay then, let's get back to Daw-"

"Morpek!" Morpeko burst from his ball as they passed a restaurant causing Zach and Riolu's faces to light up with alarmed expressions as the rodent's fur was bright purple indicating that it was hungry once more!

"I just fed out two hours ago, come on!" Zach groaned out as Riolu let out a frustrated cry while the two rushed on into the restaurant to fetch their teammate however they weren't quick enough as Morpeko had dove right into another trainer's meal and began stuffing his face as the trainer's face shot a bright red color as visible frustration formed across her face.

"My food!" Fire seemed to burn in her eyes as she gave Morpeko a harsh glare, the rodent looked up and hissed at her with a threatening tone as his cheeks started to spark.

"Morpeko!" Zach raced forward and grabbed onto Morpeko before his eyes took in the sight of what had occurred. He quickly grew pale before sweat poured down his face as he quickly began bowing repeatedly as he apologized to the girl with Riolu copying his actions.

"I'm so so sorry about this, ma'am! I-I just caught this Morpeko and he has quite the uncontrollable appetite! I-I can pay! I-I might not have a lot of money as I just started my journey last week but I've made a bit of money from battling trainers I passed by. It's yours if you-Agh!" Morpeko gave his trainer a shock as he forced his way out of his trainer's arms before quickly leaping back onto the table where he proceeded to stuff his face once more while Riolu began to pull him away.

The girl calmed down a bit from his words, she still seemed frustrated at Morpeko's actions but she wasn't going to hold that against the poor guy. She reached out and placed her hand on his shoulder before offering him a light smile. "Don't worry about it, my Munchlax is the same way!" The girl appeared to be his age and had a light skin tone along with blue eyes although they weren't as bright as Dawn's. Her light brown hair was wrapped in a green bandanna though some parts were still visible and stuck out. She wore an orange jacket with a black collar, along with a pair of biker shorts. She also wore a pair of orange running shoes which matched her jacket. "You look familiar..."

Zach began to sweat before lowering his head, figuring it'd end up like it usually did when he attempted to make new friends. People just wanted to use him to meet Cynthia, and once Verity's boyfriend ended up the Kanto champion it turned to that as well. "I-I'm Zach, Cynthia's nephew..." May tilted her head before her eyes widened.

"Oh! That's it!" A smile crossed her face and Zach let out a sigh before turning his back to her as he figured she'd try bartering for a date if he introduced her to Cynthia. "Huh? Where are you going?" May's tone sounded a bit hurt and offended causing Zach to quickly turn around.

"Y-You don't want me to introduce you to Cynthia?" Zach asked as May frowned, realizing why his mood changed without it needing to be said.

"I mean that would be nice someday but no, I'm much more interested in you." May gave his chest a light poke as a blush formed across his cheeks as he sensed that May was being honest with him. "You seem like a nice guy and I don't really have friends here, I'm from Hoenn you see and my father is a famous Gym Leader so I can relate to you perfectly! I'm May by the way," She held out her hand and Zach was quick to take it.

"N-Nice to meet you, May! What brings you to Sinnoh if I might ask?"

"I'm a Coordinator, I competed in last year's Hoenn Grand Festival but lost to my rival. I decided to travel the world and try my luck in a different Contest circuit, I always did enjoy traveling and I've already seen everything Hoenn has to offer so I picked Sinnoh as it was the closest region with Contests! It looks like I made the right choice too," May checked him over with an interested expression before looking up at him with a warm smile.

"You're a Coordinator too? My best friend is taking part in her first Contest too!" Zach was quick to exclaim.

"Really? That's interesting," May smirked lightly before tilting her head. "What about you though? What is your goal in life?"

"W-Well I'm collecting badges, I aim to participate in the Sinnoh League and one day earn the title of regional champion!"

"Not the Sinnoh champion title?" May questioned to which he shook his head.

"Nope, my aunt is crazy powerful I don't think I'll ever be strong enough to beat her or even stand a chance against the World Champion but so long as I end up a champion, I'll be happy! I just aim to try my best and see how far that gets me here!" Most trainer's didn't even win their first League or make it to the top eight but he aimed to at least beat the League and get a shot against the Elite Four!

"You're not cocky, eh?" May smirked. "I like that, too many trainers and Coordinators have a hothead and just aim blindly for the top without realizing just how strong or skilled their opponents can be!" Her phone began vibrating to indicate that it was time to go.

"Well I should be heading to the Contest Hall, the Contest will be starting up soon. You wanna... walk with me? We could go together." She offered. "I'm sure your friend is probably waiting for you."

"It's starting?!" Zach was quick to return the now passed out Morpeko while Riolu rushed to his side as he gave May a light nod. "Y-Yeah, let's go together!"

May formed a light smile before walking with him in the direction of the Contest Hall after paying for her meal.

Dawn was now approaching the registry and was rather thankful that nobody had noticed her yet. She opened up the Pokedex app on her Rotom Phone before passing it over the counter to the contest official, her heart was rather quick to sink as the official spoke her name.

"Dawn Berlitz? Congratulations, you're registered to compete in any and all Contest competitions held within the Sinnoh region!"

"Did she just say Berlitz?! That's Johanna's daughter!" A bunch of coordinators began surrounding Dawn as she nervously sweated while Piplup leaped up and down while flailing his arms about as he demanded the crowd to back off!

"Hey leave her alone!" A girl a few years older than Dawn pushed her way in front of her and stretched out her arms to protect Dawn from the crowd. She had rather short and spiked red hair along with dark red eyes. She wore an orange vest atop a magenta colored sweatshirt "Leave the poor girl alone, so what if her mother is the famous Coordinator Johanna? I admit her work too but you don't see me trying to harass her daughter, you lot should be ashamed of yourselves. Do you really think she'd approve of this?"

The rivaling Coordinators lowered their heads in shame before backing off.

Dawn looked up at the girl with an appreciative glance. "Thanks for that,"

"Don't mention it, us Coordinators have to look out for each other. I'm Zoey by the way!"

"Dawn, wait-Weren't you competing last year?" Dawn blinked as the name sounded familiar.

Zoey nodded her head as a smirk crossed her lips. "I have my eyes set on taking home that trophy this year!"

"Well I aim to win it as well!" Dawn clenched her fists with a determined expression.

"Heh, looks like we're rivals then." Zoey laughed. "Well good luck Dawn, I'm gonna go get ready for the Contest!" She began making her way backstage while Dawn looked around the room before focusing upon the door with a worried expression, wondering where Zach was as he should be back by now. Something didn't happen did it?! A frantic expression formed across her face as she thought through a variety of scenarios that could have happened, only calming down when she heard the door opening and spotting her best friend, only for jealousy and rage to instantly take her over she noticed he was talking with a girl the same age as them and it looked like they were having a good time!

She began stomping off to confront the new girl while Zach was quick to give her a wave and a large grin as she approached. "Dawn! This is May, she's a Coordi-"

"One sec," Dawn growled out as she gave May a glare before grabbing her arm and dragging her away from him, Zach tilted his head lightly as he wondered what May's problem was.

"Look I don't know what sick game you're playing but Zach is mine-my best friend!" Dawn growled out, jealousy flaring in her eyes. "I'm quite familiar with dealing with your kind of girl, you act all sweet around him but you just want to use him!"

"Whoa whoa, slow down!" May raised her hands up while lightly sweating. "I do like your friend, that's true but I'm not using him! I genuinely think he's a cool guy, cute too." She glanced back towards Zach with a light smile as Dawn's blood started to boil, she had seen girls flirt with him before but they were never into him. This was the first time she experienced somebody showing genuine attraction towards him and she couldn't help but feel anger and a bit anxious as she feared that May might just wind up sweeping him off his feet and taking him away from her! "My father's famous too so I know what it's like, trust me I have no intent on using him!"

Dawn narrowed her eyes as she stared into May's before letting go of her as she took a deep breath before giving the girl a light smile. "Well that's good to hear, I'm Dawn by the way."

"I'm May, so you're a Coordinator too? He mentioned that you were."

"Yep, it's my first time!" Dawn exclaimed.

"Well then looks like we're rivals," May formed a light smirk as she extended her hand to shake Dawn's.

'In more ways than one,' Dawn thought as she shifted her gaze towards Zach before shaking her hand. She didn't just have a Contest rival, she also had one for the heart of her love!

"Good luck, you'll probably need it if you come against me. No offense, I'm just more experienced in the Contest field." May gave a light wave before walking backstage, Dawn caught Zach watching her leave and narrowed her eyes before glaring after her as she disappeared.

"Hey you okay?" Zach placed his hand on Dawn's shoulder as he tried comforting his best friend. "You seemed upset and I didn't hear what was said but your tone was a bit higher than usual."

Dawn turned to face him and gave him a reassuring smile before wrapping an arm around him. "I'll be fine, don't you worry about me!"

"T-That's good to hear," Zach let out a sigh of relief before giving her a warm smile. "Good luck out there, hope you win!" His words were quick to brighten her mood, though the attraction May had with him appeared to be mutual Zach was still rooting for her!

"Good morning Jubilife City, it's your MC Marian talking here and we're about to start the first Pokemon Contest of the year! I'm joined here by our panel of judges Mr. Contesta,"

"Hello everyone," An older man with a greying hairline spoke up as he stood behind a booth.

"Mr. Sukizo,"

"Remarkable to meet you all!" A shorter man spoke up, the top of his head barely meeting Mr. Contesta's shoulders.

"And Jubilife's own Nurse Joy!"

"Hello!" Nurse Joy gave a friendly bow.

"We're about to start up the appeal round so please put your hands together for our first contestant, Nando!"

A calm looking man with long black hair stepped onto the stage, wearing what appeared to be a green cape along with quite the large teal green hat. He also held onto a golden harp with some feline Pokemon that neither Zach nor Dawn knew the identity of displayed across the bottom. He played a note on his harp which seemed to be a signal for his Pokemon to burst from it's Pokeball.

"Budew my friend, let's put on a show!"

"Budew!"

Dawn watched on as Nando performed, the cameras adjusted to show the crowd every now and then and she couldn't help but shiver at the sight of it, she dreamed of performing in front of crowds but dreaming was a whole lot different than actually performing! She couldn't even pick out Zach anywhere but she knew he was out there, May noticed her shivering and moved closer before placing her hand on her shoulder. Though the two of them were rivals in possibly more ways than ones, that didn't mean they couldn't be friends!

"You nervous?" May smiled lightly as Dawn slowly began to nod her head.

"I was like that when I first started last year," May chuckled lightly. "It's best to keep your mind focus on something else, distract yourself from the crowd in front of you and before you know it you'll get used to the feeling! I also distracted myself with the thought of the delicious food that I'd treat myself to after winning..." May drooled at the thought of food before shaking her head to regain focus. "Maybe you could try that?"

Dawn looked thoughtful for a moment before turning to face her with an appreciative gaze. "It's worth a try, thank you..."

Dawn watched on as May revealed herself to own an Eevee, jealousy slightly stirred within her once more as it was always a shared dream between her and Zach of owning one. They were so adorable and there were so many different evolution options available that it was quite exciting for her to think about! May had Eevee utilized Dig and after Eevee had burrowed out a tunnel by resurfacing, May ordered her to fire a Shadow Ball into the hole! Eevee fired the ball of black and purple static energy into the hole and it exploded within, causing a burst of black and purple energy to come blasting out of both holes and creating quite the sight as the crowd let out a roar before clapping their hands together.

The judges displayed a scoring of 10, 9.5, and 9.5 on their scoring panels. A grin crossed May's face as she walked offstage and after a few other Coordinator's had their turn, it was Zoey's turn. Using two Pokemon wasn't a requirement on the appeal round but a few trainers like May had stuck to just one, however most trainer's like Zoey utilized two Pokemon to take on a full advantage!

"Glameow, Misdreavus let's put on a show!"

"Glameow!"

"Misdreavus!"

"Let's do a combined Shockwave just as we've been practicing!"

Glameow's tail sparked as a blue ball of electricity began forming at the end of it while a similar ball of electricity formed within Misdreavus' mouth, the two attacks fired off and met resulting in an explosion of electricity and sparks was blue electrical energy waves flew through the air around the stadium! The crowd let out a cheer while the judges put up their scores, granting Zoey a 9, 8.5, and a 9!

Finally after what felt like forever, Dawn finally had her turn! She'd removed her hat for the performance and had ditched her usual attire in favor of a large pink dress.

"Piplup, Buneary take the stage!" Piplup raced onto the stage while Buneary burst out in a heart shaped beam of light on account of the contest seal placed upon Dawn's Pokeball.

"Piplup!"

"Buneary!"

"Piplup use Bubble, Buneary use Ice Beam!" She'd been practicing this maneuver and hoped that it'd pay off. Piplup opened his beak and began firing off a series of bubbles up high into the air while Buneary fired off a beam of ice that passed through the bubbles, freezing them solid and creating quite the show as bubbles made of ice slowly began drifting down upon the stage. Dawn could make out Zach in the stage now as he was the first to cheer for her, Riolu standing atop his shoulders in order to see above the crowd.

"Go Dawn!" He shouted before clapping followed by the rest of the audience as Dawn formed a light blush before looking towards the judges, her heart sinking for a brief moment as she saw the scoring. All three had given her 8's, that meant that her chances of progressing into the final eight were quite slim!

"Alright everyone now that we've properly tallied up the scores, we're proud to announce the final eight contestants! May's face popped onto the screen followed by Zoey's, two other trainer's appeared followed by Nando before it soon came to the eighth and final slot! Dawn began sweating nervously as she clenched her fists in anticipation, the final picture soon popped up as the crowd cheered out while Dawn lowered her head as it wasn't her.

May and Zoey both placed their hands on her shoulders to comfort their friend.

"Sorry Dawn," Zoey spoke up.

"I didn't place during my first contest either," May spoke up, looking at Dawn with concern. "Lots of trainers don't, you'll do better next time I know it!"

Dawn gave her friends a light smile before lowering her head once more. "Thanks you two but I... I think I'm just gonna go." The two watched with concern as she walked towards the changing room before heading on out to the lobby after getting changed. Piplup shared a similar look to his trainer as he walked with his head lowered in shame.

"Dawn!" Zach was right outside and was quick to throw his arms around her as he pulled his best friend into a hug. Riolu walked towards Piplup and gave him a light hug before gently petting his head as he muttered out comforting words to the penguin. "I saw what happened, if you ask me you should even been given a perfect score! Your performance was amazing! It was the best one I saw all night!"

Dawn quickly wiped away a tear with her finger as she gave him an appreciative smile. His words brought a far greater comfort to her than Zoey and May's. "Thanks Zach, I really needed to hear that." She leaned her head up against his as she returned the hug, the two held onto each other for a few minutes before eventually separating as Dawn stared at him with a blush across her face.

"You'll do even better next time, I just know it!" Dawn giggled before grabbing onto his hand.

"What do you say we watch the rest of the show?" She planned on just leaving and not bothering with seeing it through but she felt a lot better now after hearing his kind words and the hug.

"Sure I mean, May would probably get hurt if we ditched her without saying goodbye." Zach chuckled lightly while Dawn scowled at the mention of her but didn't let that get to her as she wanted to focus on enjoying the time she'd have with him and hopefully get some tips for next time!

"Blaziken!" Blaziken performed a Sky Uppercut and Glameow dropped to the ground in defeat as a pink Shellos could be seen beneath Eevee's paws, the winner of the Jubilife finals was quite clear as May had managed to defeat Zoey! Zoey returned her two Pokemon before the two Coordinators would meet at the center of the stage to shake hands, the crowd cheering at the displayed sportsmanship before Mr. Contesta approached May with the Jubilife Contest ribbon.

"May wins the Jubilife Contest folks and earns her first ribbon on her Sinnoh Contest career! I'm sure you folks will be looking forward to who wins the next contest so stay tuned as it won't be long before we air another contest!" Marian exclaimed as the crowd clapped and cheered in excitement!

"Congratulations May, you earned it!" Dawn smiled as she and Zach stood with the brunette in the Contest Hall lobby. Zoey had already left for the next contest as she didn't want to delay getting her first ribbon!

"Yeah, you were amazing out there!" Zach exclaimed as stars filled his eyes. "Your Blaziken was awesome, it's Blaze Kick was quite something and that Eevee really suits you! It's cute and it's got quite a diverse set of moves!"

"Huh?!" Dawn turned towards Zach, if she didn't know better Zach had just attempted to flirt with May. It was pretty awkward with how he worded it.

May seemed to take it that way as a blush crossed her face. "In that case your Scorbunny really suits you, it's cute and seems as loyal a friend as you are." Dawn narrowed her eyes lightly as May turned around to go. "Much fun as this is I shouldn't keep you waiting, I know you're probably eager to get your first badge and I've got a contest to catch!" May paused at the door before glancing back.

"Good luck with your next contest Dawn," Dawn spoke up with a smile as she wished her friends good luck. "As for Zach, good luck with your gym battle. Hope we see each other soon!" May gave him a wink before blowing him a kiss as Zach's face lit up like a Christmas tree while Dawn let out an annoyed growl at her. May may be her friend but she aimed to destroy her in the next contest as jealousy burned brightly within the bluenette!

And so the first contest comes to a close, I was very nervous writing it and think it came off okay but I'm not certain on the matter.

Nando debuted along with Zoey and May, he will have speaking roles but I just thought it'd make sense to debut him ahead of time. Nando's never seemed popular but I've always liked the character, I mean he does Contests and Pokemon battles! I always did think May would have been a cool rival for Dawn so I went ahead and made her one! She has Blaziken and Munchlax, and Eevee's still Eevee as Snowpoint is a way's off.

Zach also caught Morpeko and it's proving to be quite the troublesome and disobedient Pokemon already.
