One thing was for sure, Steve did not want Camryn to leave. She could tell as much by the way he dragged his feet in helping her pack, and the longing looks he would give her.
In all honesty, Camryn didn't want to leave either. She had built a life in New York. She had a nice apartment, and she was close to Steve, which was everything she could have wanted. So he wasn't the only one dragging his feet when it came to packing. She was just as guilty.
"I'm gonna miss Goose." Steve sighed, scratching the cat's head. He wanted to tell her he would miss her too, but he was worried it might be too awkward.
"Yeah? I'm sure Goose will miss you too. He really likes you for some reason." She said. "But I think it just means he is a really good judge of character."
They were both avoiding it. The inevitability of her leaving. They were trying to pretend it was just a joke, that she wouldn't be getting on a plane the next day and heading to DC. They could pretend for a while longer, and both of them gladly would.
Most of the packing occurred in silence, save for the occasional question Steve had about where to put something or how to pack it. He let her handle her more private things, letting her focus on her bedroom while he took care of the rest of the apartment.
Packing up her bedroom just seemed too intimate to him, so he preferred to just leave it up to her. Plus, he had less of a chance of awkwardly stumbling over her underwear in the main portion of the apartment.
"My bedroom is done." She said softly, leaning on the doorframe of the room. "How is it coming in here?"
Steve looked around at everything that still had to be packed, giving her a sheepish look. "The cat is being distracted." He lied, Goose mewling in argument. It made Camryn smile, and at the very least Steve was glad to have been the one to make her smile.
"Tell you what? How about we finish getting me packed, and then we head up to your place, order a pizza, and watch TV?" She suggested.
It would be saying goodbye to their schedule they tried to keep. No more movie nights. No more teaching classes at his gym. It would all be over, and Camryn wasn't ready for that.
Steve nodded, a smile on his face. "I like that plan, doll. But only if you help me finish packing." He said.
Camryn grinned, shaking her head in amusement. "Deal." She agreed, moving beside him and nudging him with her hip.
He laughed, shaking his head. He would miss little moments like this. Just being with her was enough to make him smile. She was absolutely amazing.
With the two of them packing, they managed to finish up in the next couple of hours, Camryn taping the last box shut.
"The movers will be here in the morning. I'm taking a commercial flight. I'm not leaving until late. So we'll have all day tomorrow too." She said with a smile. She had planned it specifically such that she could spend as much time with him as possible.
"That's great, doll. I wish I could come help you move in. You sure you'll be okay by yourself?" He asked curiously, reaching out to tuck hair behind her ear. He quickly retracted his hand after he realized what he was doing.
"I'll be fine, Stevie. Now c'mon. Grab the cat. Let's order that pizza and get to watching Doctor Who." She laughed softly. She didn't want Goose to be in the apartment when the Shield movers came. Technically speaking, she wasn't supposed to have a pet, so she did her best to keep it on the down low.
"Yes ma'am," he said, giving her a mocking salute and picking the cat up from his feet. He then scooped Camryn up in his other arm, spinning her around and making her squeal.
"Steve! Stop it!" She shrieked with a laugh, trying to cling to his shirt.
"I'm not doing anything." He said innocently, beginning to walk to his apartment.
"Meanie. Put me down." She insisted with a pout.
"Nah, I think I'm fine."
These were the moments he was going to miss desperately. Hearing her laugh, seeing her smile. He had never felt this way about Peggy, that was for sure. But he still didn't quite understand his own feelings.
He set her and Goose on the couch as he went to order food. Enough for six people considering he was there. His metabolism kept him pretty hungry, and he always could use the extra energy.
"What is your obsession with Doctor Who?" Steve laughed, shaking his head as she put it on while they waited for the food.
"It's not an obsession. It's scientifically proven British shows are better, okay? I'm making sure you get the full experience." She said, shoving him gently.
He sat down beside her, pulling her legs into his lap. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, doll. I'm sure you're not obsessed." He teased, shooting her a wink.
They managed to stay pretty quiet until the pizza got there, Steve standing up to pay the guy. The look on his face was one of pure confusion, whether that be from him recognizing Steve or the lack of people despite the number of pizzas, Camryn wasn't sure. But it was quite amusing.
"Get over here. I'm hungry." Camryn said, watching as Steve balanced the boxes and set them down on the coffee table.
"Of course, princess. Whatever you want." He laughed.
"Rude! I'm not a princess. If anything, I'm a queen." She shot back, a grin on her face.
They poked fun at one another the rest of the night, barely paying attention to the show. They were just enjoying each other's company.
It was no surprise when Camryn fell asleep, her cheek squished against his shoulder. He scooped her up, carrying her to his bed with a smile. He knew it was useless, but he did it anyway. He liked making sure she chose whether to cuddle with him or not.
When he went to leave, a soft whine of his name made him stop.
"Stevie, come back." Camryn whined softly, her eyes half-open as she made grabby hands for him.
"I'm gonna sleep on the couch, doll. C'mon, go back to sleep." He said softly, moving to her side and running his fingers through her hair.
"No." She said, opening her eyes to look at him. "Stay? Pretty please?"
She was looking at him with so much hope, her fingers reaching out to cling to the hem of his shirt. Another quiet please had him melting and nodding, climbing over her to get in the bed.
"I'll stay doll. I'm right here." He said softly, kissing her head as she snuggled right up against him.
That was the first night he had properly slept in a long time. And for once, it wasn't the nightmares that woke him up. Instead it was the alarm of his watch, telling him he had a mission.
Glancing down at Camryn, he was glad to see she was still fast asleep. He began to slip from her hold, freezing when she began to whine softly, her grip tightening on his shirt. He cooed to her softly, waiting until she settled down to start moving again. He eventually managed to slip from her grasp, reluctant to go but knowing he had to. Steve gave her one last kiss on the head, careful not to disturb her and wake her up. She needed her sleep.
He wrote her a note that she discovered when she woke up, a frown on her face.
'Hey doll, I'm sorry I wasn't there when you woke up. I got called for a mission, and I couldn't just ignore it. I'm sorry I had to go. I'm sorry we don't get to hang out all day. Please let me know when you get to your new place. I'll miss you. Steve.'
Camryn shoved the note in her pocket with a sigh. She had hoped to hang out with him all day. Instead, she was left overseeing the movers and getting onto a plane, all without a proper goodbye to Steve.
Camryn didn't know why she expected him to be at her empty apartment, surprising her and telling her he had gotten transferred too. That he had kept it from her to surprise her. But she did, and she found herself disappointed as she stared at the empty apartment.
"Just moving in?" A voice asked her, causing her to whirl around and grab for her imaginary gun. But it wasn't on her hip, and she knew the guy wasn't a threat.
"Woah, take it easy there. Don't shoot." He said teasingly. "I'm gonna assume by that motion you're a Shield agent? Just transferred. Can't take your gun on the plane with you."
Camryn was skeptical as she looked at him. "Who are you?" She asked, uncomfortable with how easily he had guessed she was an agent.
"Oh, sorry. I should probably introduce myself." He said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm Wyatt Esper. I work for Shield. I'm a field agent, but really I do behavioral analysis."
"Behavioral analysis?" Camryn asked in confusion, tilting her head to the side.
"I study human behavior. It can help find enemy weaknesses. And it's incredibly useful in interrogation as well." He explained. He stretched his hand out in front of him, offering it to her to shake. "I promise I'm not just some stalker creep. I just know what happens when you startle an agent, and quite honestly, I'm eternally grateful you didn't actually have your gun."
The comment somehow made Camryn relax, and she smiled, reaching out to shake his hand. When she looked at him, he didn't read like an agent. He seemed perfectly ordinary, like any other civilian.
"I'm Camryn Simmons. I just got transferred from New York." She explained.
"Simmons… that name sounds familiar." He said softly, going silent as if mulling it over.
"You're probably thinking of my sister, Jemma." Camryn sighed, retracting her hand. It wasn't unusual for her to come up in conversation when others within Shield learned Camryn's last name.
"No, no," Wyatt hummed. "Oh! Camryn, you were the top of your class at the Academy of Operations, right? You were like a legend when I went."
Camryn looked at him in surprise, fidgeting nervously. She wasn't used to being on the receiving end of anything similar to praise. She wasn't used to recognition from her peers.
"Oh… yeah, that's me. You went to the academy?" She asked, rubbing her arm.
"Yeah. I think I was a few years behind you. You know how it is, no one ever really interacts with those not in their year." He shrugged. "I remember all the girls in my year wanted to be you. And all the boys wanted to be with you."
Camryn's brow furrowed, her nose wrinkling in disbelief. "Seriously? That doesn't sound right at all. I was just a nobody back then. Just another student."
Wyatt shook his head, running a hand through his short blond hair. "Then you really must have been in your own little social bubble. Everyone was jealous of you. You were all the teacher's favorite. And I'm not kidding, all the guys wanted you." He said. He fell silent before adding the next part, almost as an afterthought. "Myself included."
Camryn's cheeks flushed. It was possible this was all happening and she just didn't realize. At the academy, she kept to herself. She had no friends and spent all her time juggling Shield classes, and fake Orchestra performances. It was more than possible she had just been oblivious to everything.
"Oh, well… I don't really know what to say to that." She admitted, tucking hair behind her ear.
"How about this: I know your stuff won't be here until tomorrow. So why don't you and I go get some food and we can continue to talk? New city, I'm sure you could use some friends." He smiled. He was so charming, and Camryn found herself easily nodding along.
"Yeah. I like the sound of that, Wyatt. Just, let me get my cat settled in really quick and then we can go?" She suggested.
"Sounds like a plan, Camryn. What type of cat do you have?" He asked curiously, watching as Camryn turned back to her apartment and picked the cat carrier up.
Goose hopped out of his crate, stretching slowly as he took each step. He began to investigate his new surroundings, meowing softly. If Camryn didn't know any better, she would think he was meowing for Steve.
She took a bowl from the backpack she had, holding only the items she would need until her luggage showed up. But with the Shield moving service, that could be a few days.
"He's just a tabby, I guess. He was a gift from my old superior. I never really asked." She explained as she filled the bowl, setting it on the tile for the cat.
"He's cute." Wyatt commented, watching as the cat slunk over to her and twisted between her legs, meowing softly. "Your superior gave him to you? Was that Agent Coulson?"
Camryn fell silent, a frown forming at the mention of the man's name. "Yeah." She said, sounding breathless.
As much as she pretended to be over his death, she really wasn't. She couldn't think about him without breaking down. He had been a father figure to her. Losing him was just as painful as it would be if her biological father died.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you." Wyatt said, stepping towards her and grabbing her hand. "I know you haven't known me long, but I'm here to talk if you need it."
Camryn gave him a weak smile. "Thanks, but I'm okay. We should get going. I'm starved." She said, carefully moving away from Goose.
She grabbed her phone and her cards. Camryn didn't even think about how Steve had asked her to text him when she got to her place. She had gotten so distracted talking to Wyatt, and caught up in getting to know him.
"Of course. I know this great little place just down the road." He said with a smile, closing the door behind her.
Wyatt just knew it wouldn't be hard to get her to fall for him. So many had before. She would be just another notch on his bedpost.
