"Do you know me?"
It felt like time was standing still as a silence passed between the three of them. The hopeful look in Steve's eyes was tinged with sadness as he stared across to his best friend, waiting for him to confirm or deny whether he was the Bucky he remembered or was long gone.
Staring right back Bucky tilted his chin slightly and took in a deep breath "You're Steve," he said in a forced tone. After Ange's warning they were both on edge, ready for Steve to arrest them and take them into Shield's custody "I read about you in a museum, Harper filled in a lot of the rest."
Her eyes lowered automatically as Steve glanced over to her and she stepped closer to Bucky to close the gap between them. Her eyebrows furrowed as a noise, almost like another voice, caught her attention and she watched Steve reach up to press the device sitting in his ear closer so he could listen.
"I know you're nervous. And you have plenty of reason to be," Steve began, a sense of urgency in his tone and the way he held himself, as he threw a glance over to the window.
"I wasn't in Vienna. I don't do that anymore," Bucky said quickly, before Steve could continue, as he turned and reached his hand out to Harper.
Steve pressed his finger to his ear again as the noise from earlier caught Harper's attention once more; he was being warned of something "Well, the people who think you did are coming here now. And they're not planning on taking you alive."
"That's smart. Good strategy," Bucky replied, lifting his left arm and removing the glove he usually wore when leaving the apartment. Beside him Harper's heart was racing, sweat prickling on her skin and her chest aching with unreleased breath "It's alright," he continued in a mumble, his words only for her, as she stepped even closer to him.
"This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck," Steve was practically pleading, holding his hand out toward his friend "How about you let the girl go?" he asked, as though negotiating in a hostage situation.
He must have felt her tense up as he reached back to squeeze her fingers with his own, stopping her before she said anything which could incriminate her when Steve took them in "It's time for the plan," he said beneath his breath, watching as she spun on her heel and grabbed her bag out of the cupboard before turning back to Steve "It always ends in a fight."
Slinging her bag onto her back she swallowed down her anxiety, the plan running through her mind calming her slightly and giving her something to focus on. This was down to her, she was the one in control.
Steve was looking between them in confusion as she sent Bucky one last glance, nodding her head to let him know she knew what she was doing and sending him one last smile before heading for the back doors. She slipped outside just in time to hear Steve ask Bucky why he'd pulled him from the river.
With barely any time to spare Harper closed her eyes and took in a quick breath, there was a calm around sticking to a routine and this plan had been repeated so many times it was practically routine to her now.
Hopping up onto the balcony wall she scanned the street, the same street on which she and Bucky had danced in the rain not too long ago, to make sure it was empty.
Leaning over she unravelled the rope ladder, the one she and Bucky had installed during their weeks inside, and didn't think twice before swinging down and gripping onto one of the rungs. After plenty of practise and feeling the adrenaline rushing through her veins to keep her going she scaled down the side of the building with ease, her feet landing on the pavement soundlessly.
Not letting her mind focus on what could be happening back up in the apartment she set out on her search for a car. She had noticed during her time living in Romania that the people leaving their cars in the street behind their apartment building were far too trusting and it didn't take her long to find one unlocked.
Sliding into the drivers side she chucked her backpack onto the passenger seat, swiping her hair from her face she bent down to disable the steering wheel lock. Unable to help it she found herself smiling as she remembered Ryan's distaste at Eddie's eagerness to show Harper his skill and the way her eyes had rolled at the report of her girlfriend being a 'natural' at hotwiring cars.
Back then she had been learning as a way of bonding with her other half's younger brother; she could never have predicted just how important it would become.
"Come on, come on," she said beneath her breath once she grabbed her screwdriver and had removed the access cover beneath the steering wheel, her fingers shook slightly with adrenaline as she tried to sort through the wires at the same time as keeping her eye on what was going on around her "Yes!" she exclaimed as the car burst into life, shifting it into gear and, checking over her shoulder once again, driving it round to where she and Bucky had planned to meet.
Her fingers tapped nervously on the warm leather of the steering wheel as gun sounds and explosions echoed around the streets. Bucky was nowhere in sight and she could feel the anxiety begin to grip at her throat. Popping the door open she stepped out, shielding her eyes as she glanced up to their apartment.
Just in time to see Bucky jump from one of the lower balconies onto the roof of the building opposite.
"Shit!" she exclaimed as she clambered back into the car, not bothering with her seatbelt as she shoved the car into gear and slammed her foot down onto the accelerator. Her heart was in her mouth as she spotted someone, a person, flying above her car, metal wings outstretched and cruising with ease.
She'd never seen anything like it before but forced herself not to dwell on it. Steve had launched himself after Bucky and she had to be ready for when they reached the ground.
Her heart remained in her throat as bullets rained down on the rooftop from a hovering helicopter, anxiety gripped at every muscle as all she could do was hide and wait. Bending down to see what was going on above her she jumped at the sight of the flying man kicking the tail of the helicopter, spinning it around and stopping the firing. He swooped and dived, her wide and fearful eyes connecting with his as he zoomed passed her car.
But her attention was soon caught once again as she spotted Bucky scaling down the side of the building. Her eyebrows furrowed as she noticed he was being chased by someone different; a man in an all black suit with a mask covering his face.
Knowing she had to keep up her foot was practically pressed to the floor as she followed the mismatched group through the streets of Romania. She could see that the figure chasing Bucky seemed to have cat ears decorating the top of his mask but she once again pushed it to the back of her mind - she had just met Captain America and saw a flying man kick a helicopter out of the way. This was just another thing to add to the long list of insane things happening before her very eyes.
She dodged and swerved as she tried to keep up, avoiding bullets being shot down to them and ignoring the beep of horns around her as she overtook and cut people off. She swore beneath her breath as she spotted Bucky jumping down into the underpass, not bothering to flick her indicator on and ignoring the shouts and squeals of car tyres as she took the next left.
Steve was just ahead of her, his blue uniform and the shield standing out even in the dimly lit underpass, as he raced alongside the cars with ease. Car horns blared as figures dodged between them, blue and red flashing lights lit up the walls as Harper tried desperately to keep up.
"Stand down! Stand down!" one of the GSG-9 drivers called out over their tannoy system but no one took heed of their command, Steve jumping from the floor onto the windshield and bringing the car to a screeching halt.
Did she trust him or didn't she?
Making a split second decision Harper slammed her foot down on the break, leaning over and swinging the passenger side door open she heard the word "Steve!" being called in her own voice.
He did a double take, frowning beneath the helmet masking half of his face, before he realised who she was. Jogging over to her he flung himself in beside her, slamming the door shut and sitting back as she continued down the underpass.
Up ahead Bucky was running over the top of a speeding car, outpacing it easily, with the mysterious black clothed figure not too far behind. Drawing in a lungful of breath Harper pushed even harder down onto the accelerator, squeezing through a near impossible space between two cars and catching up to the masked man.
She let out a yell of surprise after they had passed him, Steve spinning in his seat to see he'd jumped onto the back. Sending Captain America a glance Harper smiled apologetically before swerving the car from left to right erratically "Maybe he won't be able to hold on," she said as some kind of explanation as Steve glanced at her with wide eyes.
"I'm not sure who taught you how to drive but they did a hell of a job," he said with a chuckle and a shake of his head before he turned around to see how their uninvited guest was getting on "Sam, we can't shake this guy."
Sirens blared as Harper continued to swerve from side to side, hitting the back of the car against others coming up behind them "St-Cap-Mr America," she said, cursing herself and her situation "We've got a problem," she continued as Steve glanced her way, nodding her head to where dark cars with flashing lights were heading their way.
"Left! Go left!" Steve exclaimed and Harper nodded, holding her breath and almost closing her eyes as she swerved the car left and they crashed through the barriers following where Bucky had disappeared.
Once her eyes were open again she straightened up the car, sitting up and closer to the steering wheel she spotted Bucky up ahead. There was a motorbike speeding toward him and Harper bit down on her bottom lip as she watched him grab hold of the handle bar, spinning the bike around in mid air to throw the rider off before hopping onto it himself and speeding away.
"He doesn't mean it," she said in a small voice, her eyes flickering across to Steve and noticing the look of disappointment on his face "He's scared."
It all seemed to be happening too fast for her to keep up with. As Bucky's masked assailant leapt onto the back of his motorbike he flung him forward and Sam arrived, the bike tipping over to its side. Harper watched with a lump in her throat as the chase continued, wincing as Bucky threw a sticky bomb to the top of the roof sending most of the underpass into a pile of rubble.
She hadn't known he'd even had that, obviously hiding it away in the bottom of his own backpack ready for if it were ever needed.
"Hold on!" she shouted as she tried to get control of the car, her and Steve being thrown forward in their seats as she swerved through the rubble and skidded to a halt.
Steve jumped out of the car almost before it had stopped and without another word, racing over to where the masked man and Bucky were fighting, tackling him away and rolling across the floor with him.
Harper took a second to try and catch her breath before she realised they were being closed in on. Opening up the driver's side door she stumbled out of the car, shaking her head and pulling herself together in time to race over to where Steve was now standing between Bucky and his attacker. Her legs felt like jelly, her arms almost unable to relax after gripping onto the steering wheel so tightly and the breath seeming to not want to leave her lungs in a controlled manner. Anxiety was prickling at her skin, fogging her vision and causing her heart to almost jump out of her chest but she found that glancing across to where Bucky was looking at her allowed her to take in a lungful of much needed fresh air.
She wanted to reach out to him and tell him everything was alright but, as their eyes met, she noticed there was a frown on his face.
"This wasn't the plan," he said in a low growl "We were keeping you safe."
"I wasn't leaving you behind," she answered with a frown of her own as armed police arrived and surrounded them, their guns aimed.
She shrank back, closing tighter to Bucky's side as the man she knew from the news to be War Machine leapt down from above and raised both of his hands.
She couldn't quite believe the scene which was unfolding before her; not only was she standing with Captain America, a man she had literally written on the walls about, but James Rhodes.
She couldn't stop her mind from wandering as she tried to focus on her breathing. Before she knew who she was, before she was taken in by Ange and Jack, she had been a nobody on the streets. It had been seeing James Rhodes and Tony Stark in one of the newspapers shoved into the bin she had been hoping to grab something to eat from that had sparked her memory from her childhood. His last name, Rhodes, had brought memories of her time at Ruth's rushing back to the surface.
Seeing his name on a newspaper had once given a nameless Harper a spark of hope but now seeing him appear before her only caused dread to weigh heavy in her stomach.
"Stand down, now," he said as Bucky stepped in front of her, his hand reaching out to push her behind him protectively. Around them armed police aimed their guns and car doors began to open "Congratulations, Cap. You're a criminal," he continued as Steve placed his shield on his back and held his hands up innocently.
"Wie lautet der Befehl?" one of the soldiers asked as they closed around the group. Harper let out a whimper as she was shoved aside by one man and caught by another, her arms roughly placed behind her back as her wrists were encaptured with handcuffs "Leave him alone!" she screamed, her throat burning, as she watched Bucky be forced to his knees.
Opposite her the masked man retracted his claws and removed what was covering his face, James Rhodes bowing his head slightly as he caught sight of his true face "Your Highness."
Harper glanced around all of them in desperation. Steve was being taken into custody, as was the man she now knew as Sam, and she could feel the helplessness slowly creep over her. They were caught. They had been on the run for two years and this was the end.
There was no plan for what was going to happen now. She didn't know what to expect or even if they knew of what she really was.
Steve hadn't seemed to have recognised her, even requesting Bucky to let her go as though she was some kind of hostage, but the anxiety gripping at her stomach didn't let up.
Her information had been in that file somehow. Her heart skipped a beat and her breath caught in her throat as she glanced across to Steve once more with tears in her eyes. Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, knew who she was and it was just a matter of time before she passed the information on.
Another exclaim left her as the soldiers keeping hold of Bucky shoved him to the ground "Leave him alone!" she shouted, struggling against her shackles.
"It's alright," he mouthed to her as the vehicle to carry him arrived "Be careful."
"No!" Harper shouted as he was pulled back up onto his feet by his joined wrists and practically dragged over to the large glass box awaiting him "He didn't do anything! Leave him alone!"
But her shouts of protest went unheard as Bucky was locked away, sending her one last look before she was pulled around herself. Digging her heels into the ground she fought all of the way, stretching her neck around in an attempt to keep her eye on him before he was driven away.
She winced, letting out a shout of pain, as she was thrown into the back of one of the cars. Straightening up she shuffled to the edge of her seat, calling out questions of what was going on in Romanian and being totally and utterly ignored.
Letting out a sigh she flopped back against the seats, leaning her head back and squeezing her eyes shut as the car started up and they began their journey.
She wasn't sure where they were going or what was about to happen. She just knew it wasn't going to be good.
