The RPG exploded almost directly in front of their SUV. The driver immediately hit the brakes, trying to reverse course. That proved to be a mistake. He was dead a moment later, a bullet lodged in his brain.
"Sniper!" Oliver yelled, grabbing his bow and firing an arrow in the direction the shot had come from. Talia joined him a moment later. The two weren't expecting to hit anyone just yet. They were just trying to keep their opponents heads down.
Thankfully, the Bratva member riding shotgun wasn't a complete idiot. He used the cover that Oliver and Talia were providing to move his dead brother away from the wheel. Then he put his foot on the gas and threw the SUV into reverse. Gravel exploded around them as more bullets impacted the road, a few even managing to hit the SUV. Then there was a loud whine, and the ground in front of them exploded.
"Everybody out! Anatoly, you and your men draw their fire. Talia, find that lunatic with the RPG and kill him. I've got the sniper."
Before anyone could argue, Oliver had opened the back door and exited the vehicle, staying low to avoid any incoming fire, Talia doing the same an instant later. Anatoly and his remaining men immediately began firing towards where their attackers had fired from, providing covering fire for Oliver and Talia.
Talia moved swiftly and silently, moving to the side of the road and advancing up the hill that lay just beyond it. She knew where that RPG had come from. The smoke trail that it had left in its wake as it was fired not once, but twice, was extremely obvious. That was one of the major drawbacks of using an RPG.
Talia got to the top of the hill and resisted the urge to laugh at the sheer stupidity of the scene she beheld in front of her. Cleary no one had taught these men the meaning of securing their position. Only three men, and not one of them was focused on guarding against an attack from the rear. Two men were working on reloading the RPG while a third was standing just to the right of them, the AK-47 in his hand pointed towards the road they had been traveling down. These idiots honestly believed that they could kill them as though they were lambs waiting for slaughter. Perhaps they didn't know who they had fired upon. Perhaps they were arrogant or just plain stupid. Regardless, they were going to learn a very painful, very final lesson. Talia pulled out a knife, throwing it at the man with the AK-47. It tore through his neck, blood gushing from the wound as he fell to his knees, the sound of him choking on his own blood filling the air. In the instant it took the other two men to turn, Talia had already crossed the distance that separated her from her targets. She drew her sword, severing one man's head from his shoulders. The final man reached for his weapon, only to scream as Talia severed three of his fingers.
"FUCK! You crazy bitch! Do you have any idea-"
"Silence or I take your other fingers." Talia commanded, cutting off the man in his native tongue.
"Now listen to me. I escaped the trap you laid for us, and I found your position. I have killed two of your men and severed three of your fingers. Now, I will give you one chance to tell me the truth. Lie to me, and I sever a hand. Lie to me again, and I take something much more valuable to you." She said, and the man glared.
"You fucking AHH SHIT!" The man screamed, clutching his injured hand. Talia had taken an arrow from her quiver and buried it into his palm.
"I would refrain from insults. Understand that no matter how much pain you are in, I can always make it worse. There is only one other individual on the planet as adept at making people talk as I am, and I trained him. Now nod if you understand me." She said, and the man nodded slowly. As he looked at the beautiful woman, he quickly realized that this was not your average peasant seeking revenge. Her weapons and skill told him she was a professional. Her eyes told him that she had no qualms about causing him pain, for days if necessary.
"Good. Now what is your name?"
"Victor."
"Victor, who do you work for?"
"Bratva. I am an important man." He said, and Talia laughed coldly.
"Oh, I highly doubt that. If you were an important man, you would have some idea of who you just tried to assassinate. The Kahpan of the Bratva was in that car, as was a Captain. Now I will ask you again, who do you work for?"
"Bratva. Gregor! I work for Gregor!"
"Gregor is dead! Now I take your fingers!" She said angrily. This dog was playing games, games that she had no time for. Gregor had died. She knew it. Oliver and Anatoli had made sure of it.
"No please! I swear! He had a brother!" The man yelled, and Talia halted her swing.
"Speak quickly."
"Gregor had a younger brother. Nikolai. He was taken away before Gregor and Anatoli's war. He has returned, and quietly reached out to the old guard loyal to his brother. He plans to assassinate the pretender and assume his rightful throne."
"If he wants a throne, he can rule in hell." Talia said, severing the man's head with a swing of her sword.
She wiped the blood off on the man's shirt and sheathed her sword, heading to find her lover.
Oliver swore softly as he saw the dirt to his left explode. Whoever this shooter was, he actually had a clue what he was doing. He was also using a .50-cal. In layman's terms, Oliver was in a tight spot. Or he would be if he was anyone else. He waited, then fired an arrow towards the shooter. He ducked back behind the rocks just as the gun went off. Chicps of rock cut into his flesh, but he ignored the sting of pain. He had gotten what he wanted. An exact location on his shooter.
Oliver took a deep breath, feeling his heartbeat slow. Then he drew and fired in one motion, ducking behind the rocks as soon as the arrow had left his bow. He heard a grunt, but resisted the urge to look and see if his arrow had hit the target. Only amateurs did something so foolish. He waited for a moment, then two, then three. There was no return fire, and no sound.
Oliver climbed up over the rocks, staying low until he came to the sniper's position. The man was dead, an arrow buried in his throat.
"You were successful." He said a few moments later, not turning around. He had heard Talia coming before he saw her.
"Had I been an enemy-"
"You would be dead." He finished, turning and embracing her.
"I'm glad you're okay." He said, and she smiled.
"As am I. Although I see you got scratched." She said, placing a hand to his cheek where the rocks had scratched him.
"I'll live. Unfortunately, I didn't get anything out of this guy before I put him down."
"Then it is a good thing one of mine talked before he died." She said, walking over to the body of the man Oliver had killed.
"Excellent shot." She said, and he smiled. He may be Ra's Al Ghul, but he still appreciated praise from his former mentor.
"Thank you. I-Surev." He growled, and Talia glanced up at him.
"The man. I didn't recognize him before. This is Surev, a former high-ranking lieutenant of Gregor. Supposedly he left Russia after Anatoli and I sent Gregor to hell."
"That would fit with what Victor told me before he died. Apparently, Gregor had a brother who he got out of Russia before Anatoli's rise to power. He has apparently reached out to Gregor's old loyalists in an attempt to wrest control of the Bratva by assassinating Anatoli."
"So the only question that remains is where we find him, and I think I know just who to ask."
Starling City-7PM Local Time
"Are you ready, beloved?" Nyssa asked, taking Sara's hand. The blonde squeezed it tightly, kissing her lover before jumping off the roof and landing on the nearby fire escape. Nyssa joined her a moment later.
Sara was clad in her usual black leather outfit, blonde wig and domino mask. Nyssa was dressed in the traditional uniform of the League, except that hers had red interwoven amongst the black. She had her hood up, and a red veil covered the lower half of her face leaving only her eyes visible.
Sara opened the window, climbing inside. Nyssa followed behind her silently.
"Good evening Laurel." She said, her voice disguised by a voice synthesizer the League had designed.
"Who are you? How the hell did you get in here?" Laurel asked, barely keeping her grip on the glass of whiskey she had in her hand. She tried to keep her voice steady, but she couldn't help the note of fear that came through it. She also couldn't help unconsciously licking her lips as she beheld the two women in front of her. The blonde's costume allowed for more than a hint of cleavage, and the other woman's eyes seemed as alluring as any she had ever seen. She took a sip of her drink, waiting for them to speak.
Her action had not gone unnoticed by either of the two women, Nyssa smirking beneath her veil at the thought of the lawyer. While she loved Sara, she wasn't blind. Laurel was beautiful, with long blonde hair, green eyes and curves evident even beneath the pantsuit and jacket she wore. Sara fought down the urge to lick her own lips as she looked at Laurel. Her sister was even more beautiful than she remembered. And she was her sister.
Sara kept her expression blank, focusing instead on Laurel's question.
"You left your window unlocked. As for who we are, we're like you. We're people who are sick and tired of seeing scum poison our city while the cops and the courts turn a blind eye. Present company excepted of course. So we're going to take back this city. Starting with Adam Hunt. You want him. We want him. And I promise you, we will get him."
"Look, I like your enthusiasm but you can't just go around doing whatever you want. People could get hurt."
"The only ones who will get hurt will be the ones in our way. Adam Hunt is only the beginning. Sleep well Laurel. We'll be in touch." Sara said before the two exited the way they had come in.
Laurel put down her drink and ran to her window, but the two women had already vanished.
"That went well." Nyssa said as they stood on the roof of Laurel's apartment building. Sara nodded. It had been good to see her sister again, even if Laurel hadn't known it was Sara she was speaking with.
"Yes. Now, let's get to our next appointment."
