The Hopeless Night: The Phantom in our Heart
Prologue: Rain

[Opening Scene: National City
Theme of Opening: Rain by SiD]

It was raining.

To Supergirl, it seemed like every day it rained over National City. At least, it felt that way to her.

Then again, the rain came when she went away.

Supergirl knew that it was a bad idea to be here, outside of what was once her office building, sitting on her balcony, but this was the only place that bought her comfort and peace.

"Your words mean nothing to me anymore," Lena whispered, her voice cold and unfeeling. "Spare us both the drama and leave me alone."

Supergirl could remember the agony her heart went through when Lena cut her off contact and the pitying look Alex gave her when she recounted everything to her.

And that was the last time she saw her before her battle with Rama Khan.

Despite the dangerous battle, all Supergirl could think about was her.

The way she laughed.

The way she smiled.

The way her eyes seemed to glow when science talk was going on.

She missed everything about her.

But most of all, all Supergirl could think about was how in love she was with the CEO.

And without her, Supergirl was numb, lifeless, and broken. So she relished in combat. She enjoyed each blow that collided with her body. It helped her feel something, even for a moment. She was almost sad when Brainy was able to seal the ancient ones away.

Because now, with Khan and Leviathan defeated, all that remained with Supergirl was the bitter memories of the love she lost.

Everyone at the DEO tried to rally for her to make up with her, and after a month, Supergirl finally drummed up the courage to see her, but when she arrived at the L-Corp building, everyone was gone. Supergirl then flew to her home, and like L-Corp, it had been cleared out as well.

She had left her behind. She had betrayed her, hurt her, and then left the city. Supergirl felt something break in her heart.

All that time, Supergirl wanted to embrace her humanity, but because she had, it left her open to a pain she had never felt. Not when Mon-El went to the future, and not when James Olsen walked away, and not from any villain she had ever fought.

She had done what no one had ever done before, and that was break Supergirl's spirit thoroughly until there was nothing left. That was the day that Supergirl let go of the L-Corp CEO. And with her go, Supergirl also let go of her human persona.

Supergirl closed her eyes and let the rain wash down her body, wishing that it could wash away the bitter memories that invaded her mind and hoping that the biting cold could seep through her skin and freeze her tortured heart.

Anything to stop the misery she felt.

Suddenly, the sounds of civilians screaming reached her ears. She looked down from the balcony and saw a speeding bus gliding down the street.

Supergirl flew from the balcony with a frown as the rainfall grew heavier and soared down to the ground.

She sped past the bus and turned her body, and landed on the ground. She took a deep breath and let out a gust of wind to slow the bus down.

(Will the rain ever leave me alone? I wonder why it chose
To follow me when there's nowhere else I can go)

The bus slowed enough, so when Supergirl's hand's connected, the civilians within the large vehicle did not fly through its windows, but she could see the collision still jostled them. Supergirl skidded against the ground, the street beneath her feet rising as she went backward until the bus slowed to a stop.

Supergirl could hear the civilians' cheering all around her as she moved her hands away from the front of the bus. But Supergirl was painfully aware that while this used to bring her great joy, it now sounded hollow to her.

But this was the life Supergirl chose, so she would embrace it all even if it left her forever alone.

Because despite the pain she left in her battered heart, thoughts of her still caused Supergirl's tears to mix with the rain.

[Scene Change: Coast City
Theme of Opening (cont): Rain by SiD]

Lena Luthor stood on her balcony in Coast City, admiring the view of the ocean with a cup of wine in her hand. Lena loathed how beautiful the shimmering blue hue that the water took on.

It served to remind Lena of her and her bright, shimmering blue eyes.

The eyes that spoke of hope, determination, excitement, patience, and love.

Lena scowled and sat her wine glass down.

Why did this always happen?

When Lena arrived at National city all those years ago, she promised herself that she would never trust anyone again, and then she met her. Lena didn't believe in love until she smiled at her.

Lena tried to ignore it and push the eager woman away, but her warmth and earnestness eventually won her over.

Lena truly believed that she had found someone she could trust and love with her entire heart. But like everyone else Lena let in, she was betrayed by the one person she essentially pleaded with not to violate her scarred-up heart.

Lena had chosen the world and her over her brother, and in the end, she was left as the fool.

She tried to apologize and tried to talk Lena out of what she was planning to do, and Lena could hear the truth in her words, but Lena had been scarred enough. Her earnest, tearful eyes were not going to win her back.

But Lena could feel her iron mask cracking as she watched her cry and reach out for her.

And so Lena trapped her in the Fortress then washed her hands of her, of National City, of their shared friends, everything.

But Lena couldn't escape her. She was always in the news and the sky, and every time Lena caught a glimpse of her, Lena's heart would shatter all over again.

So after a month of quiet planning, Lena Luthor and L-Corp left National City.

And with Lena leaving National City, Lena left her heart behind.

Everything Lena had gone through in National City had proven to her that she was best alone, but she couldn't help but remember the eyes of the woman who had captured her heart and couldn't help but wish she could see them again, despite the pain she felt.

But that realization did not stop her from crying, wishing that the hero could wipe them away and hold her close like she used to do, despite the betrayal she had gone through.

But no matter how much time has passed, Lena foolishly allowed tears to fall for that damned Super.

The sky began to darken as a familiar chime was heard from her left hand. Lena looked at the glowing green ring in alarm and whispered, "Of course it would be now…."

Lena rushed to her phone and dialed a number on it as the rain began to fall. "Cancel all of my appointments and reschedule them for tomorrow. The others need my help," Lena told her assistant Jess through the phone, only for her eyes to catch the picture sitting on the dresser beside her bed.

Her eyes lingered on the picture, at her weakness before she looked away and fled.

Coast city needed her.

They needed one of their heroes.

Night had fallen on National City, and Supergirl sat on her couch, alone for another night.

In her hand, she held a picture that showed better days.

Drops of tears fell from her eyes before her phone rang. She looked down at it and sighed before muttering, "Time to save the city again."

With a quick change, Supergirl flew out her window and into the rainy night sky. She flew to the west side of the city, where her sister Alex and her protégé Dreamer stood.

"What do we have?" Supergirl asked as she floated to the ground between the pair.

"Well, you won't believe this, Supergirl," Dreamer said as she motioned to the ground.

And what Supergirl saw caused her body to freeze. "It can't be…." Supergirl whispered.

On the ground laid three unconscious women, each of them wearing glowing green rings on their fingers.

But the one in the middle was the one that caught her by surprise.

"Lena…" Supergirl whispered.
