"I can't believe this shit," Alex muttered as she stared down at the three bodies in the middle of the street.
The past year had not been good for the Danvers family.
After Lena's betrayal, Alex had to clean up the shattered remains of her sister's heart. She had to go through her sister's bouts of deep depression and desperation to see the CEO of L-Corp again. Alex had told Kara to give Lena some time and said to her that she would come around.
During that time, Alex noticed that her sister was growing reckless. She would throw herself into dangerous situations, with the most significant instance being her battle with the Khan. But Alex gave her the benefit of the doubt, just thinking that her little sister had been caught off guard during these situations.
Then came Lena's quiet and sudden exit from National City.
And it was then that Alex noticed something had changed with Kara.
The first thing that change was Kara quitting CatCo.
[Flashback Scene: National City]
"Hey, has anyone seen Kara?" Nia asked as she entered the meeting room of the DEO.
Alex, who was talking to J'onn, turned around to face the concerned hero and said, "I haven't seen Kara since last week when Luthor decided to take her ball and go home." Alex then noticed how fidgety Nia looked and asked, "Is everything okay?"
"Kara's desk was cleared off!" Nia exclaimed, which shocked Alex greatly.
"W-What?" Alex stammered.
"Kara's desk was cleared off. No pictures, no personal effects. Nothing. It's like she never worked there," Nia said. "I asked Andrea what happened, and she said that Kara quit. Andrea tried to get Kara to stay, but Kara refused and left."
Alex narrowed her eyes in confusion.
The second thing that changed was Kara's look.
[Flashback Scene: National City]
"Kara, Nia told me what happened. Did you quit Cat-What in the hell is this?!" Alex exclaimed in shock as she stared at her little sister.
Kara's lengthy hair had been cut into a choppy chin-length bob, and her hair was blonder than before.
But that wasn't the only change.
Kara's Supergirl uniform was bright white in color and sleeveless, revealing her muscular arms, which had a gold band on each bicep. The S-Shield was redesigned into armor covering her upper chest, shoulders, neck, and upper back. The S-Shield was platinum-white with a gold outline, and the cape was attached directly to the shield.
Her boots, wrist bands, and cape were platinum-white with gold trim on the edges. The uniform itself also seemed more form-fitting, hugging Kara's curves, and the fabric seemed less padded.
"Why did you change your uniform and cut/dye your hair?" Alex asked.
"I figured it was time for a change," Kara replied. "Do you like it?" Kara asked, her tone detached as she floated to the kitchen. "It's styled after the ceremonial garb of the high council of Krypton."
"Okay, that tone is a red flag," Alex snarked as she walked after Kara and grabbed her forearm to get her attention. "Seriously, Kara, what's going on with you? I mean, your new uniform looks more regal, I guess, but you loved your old uniform, you loved your hair, and you loved CatCo." Alex's eyes softened, and she murmured, "Talk to me."
"There is nothing to talk about," Kara cooly replied. "I'm fine. It's just time for a change. Simple as that."
Alex should have taken that as a warning.
But once again, Alex had given Kara the benefit of the doubt. She knew her sister was having a rough go of it and didn't want to add to it by being the stereotypical big sister by worrying about her every move.
Well, more so than usual.
But as time passed, Alex began to notice that Kara had submerged entirely into the Supergirl persona. While the core of the Last Daughter of Krypton had remained the same, being her sense of bravery, justice, honor, and good morals, the kind, caring, outgoing, selfless, and forgiving side of Kara was gone.
Kara no longer hung around civilians to give autographs or heroic speeches or pictures. She flew in, got the job done, and flew away. Kara was now aloof to the world around her. It reminded Alex of a certain Bat-Themed hero in Gotham.
There were also subtle things Alex and noticed. Kara never walked around anymore. She tended to hover above the ground and refuse to hang out with any of them. It was all business with Kara now, and it caused Alex to become sick with worry.
So much so that it dissolved her fragile relationship with Kelly Olsen, which added heartbreak to her worry.
And that worry only became worse after the Divine incident.
[Flashback Scene: National City]
"Kara! What the fuck was that out there?!" Alex yelled as she stared at the bed-ridden Kara.
A new villain had appeared in National City named Doctor Thaddeus Sivana. He had created a clone of Kara, known as Divine, using the DNA of the hero that Lillian Luthor took.
The clone and the original had a long, drawn-out battle that heavily wounded both Kara and Divine, but in the end, Kara defeated her clone after luring her to the Mount Norquay Bunker, where the Kryptonite cannons fired and took them both down.
If not for J'onn rescuing them both, both Divine and Kara would have died.
"I was doing my job," Kara weakly replied.
"Your job? You nearly got killed!" Alex exclaimed. "If not for J'onn, you would have! Why did you take such a risk like that?! We could have found another way to stop Divine!"
"What does it matter?" Kara asked, her eyes weak and her skin pale. "Divine was defeated, Sivana is in jail, and we saved the city. Why are you so angry?"
Alex blinked, the anger leaving her veins. "What does it matter? Kara, you nearly died today," Alex whispered in disbelief, tears prickling her eyes. "I nearly lost you because you were reckless! Ever since Lena walked away, you've been like this! You've changed into this unfeeling, uncaring, reckless person! Don't you care that you nearly died?! Does your life even matter to you anymore?!"
Alex panted out, tears falling down her face as she gazed at her little sister. It was then she saw it. Kara had a faint, lifeless smile on her face.
"No, it doesn't…." Kara responded before she drifted off to sleep.
Since then, Kara had become even more distant to Alex, to the point that Alex only ever saw her during a crisis.
All because of the woman lying on the ground. Lena Luthor had taken her sister from her and replaced her with this person she didn't recognize anymore.
"Should we tell Supergirl?" Dreamer asked with a look of concern.
Alex waffled on this.
Alex knew that she should tell Supergirl, but truthfully, she was unaware of how Supergirl would react in seeing the Luthor again. "Do we have a choice?" Alex finally asked.
"I wish," Dreamer sadly responded.
Alex wasn't the only one that Supergirl had become distant with.
It was no secret that Nia looked up to the hero and often made jokes that Supergirl was like her hero-mom, but when Lena left and Kara changed, Nia was left just as heartbroken as Alex.
Alex sighed, lifted her left wrist, and pressed the button to summon Supergirl to their location.
Two minutes passed, and the familiar sound of Supergirl's flapping cape was heard behind her.
"What do we have?" Supergirl asked as she floated to the ground between the pair.
"Well, you won't believe this, Supergirl," Dreamer said as she motioned to the ground.
Alex watched as Supergirl glanced at the ground before she saw her sister freeze in surprise. "It can't be…." Supergirl whispered. "Lena…"
Alex and Dreamer exchanged a glance.
This was the first time they heard something akin to emotion in Supergirl's voice since last year.
"Found them here unconscious. Talk about a blast from the past, huh?" Alex asked from beside her, a wry grin on her face, but when she looked at Supergirl's face, she could only sigh when the emotionless mask fastened itself tight on her face.
"How long have they've been here?" Supergirl questioned, ignoring her sister's comment.
"Not long, thankfully. Around twenty-five minutes," Alex answered with a frown.
"Take them to the DEO. I'm going back to the apartment. Let me know when they awaken," Supergirl commanded before she flew off without hearing Alex's response.
"Well, she didn't take that well," Dreamer said as Alex stared in the direction her sister had flown off.
"At least we got something else out of her instead of silence or orders," Alex said before she motioned for some DEO agents to retrieve the three unconscious women. "But I wonder what they are doing here."
"And those rings," Dreamer added. "I've never seen them before."
"Maybe J'onn knows what they are," Alex murmured as she crossed her arms.
((My hands) Don't wanna start again
(My hands) No, they don't wanna understand
(My hands) They just shake it try to break whatever peace I may find)
Alex and Dreamer exchanged a look at the song and looked around in confusion. "Where is that coming from?"
((My hands) They only agree to hold
(Your hands) And they don't wanna be without)
Alex and Dreamer began to look for where the music was coming from until Dreamer said, "I found the cause!"
((Your hands) And they will not let me go
No, they will not let me go)
Alex turned her head to see Dreamer holding a phone in her hand. Dreamer glanced at the phone and said, "I think this is Lena's. Unless she knows someone else named "Jess.""
Alex narrowed her eyes and said, "Bag it for now. We need to get back to the DEO."
[Scene Change: East Moloka`i Mountains]
Supergirl flew high above the sky, emotionless mask cracking the further she flew from National City. Seeing Lena's face again had brought up too many memories. Memories she could not and would not face again.
Like a comet in the sky, Supergirl continued to fly at top speed, needing to gain distance from National City and from Lena Luthor.
'I can't face her again,' Supergirl thought as her vision grew blurry. She reached up and wiped her eyes as she flew faster, but then, a familiar scent caught her nose, causing her to stop mid-flight.
'Oh, no….' Supergirl thought as she hovered in the sky.
With the East Moloka`i Mountains on the horizon was a field of painfully familiar flowers.
[Flashback Scene: National City]
"Those flowers are beautiful," Kara said as she looked at the flower pot on Lena's desk with an awed expression.
She had never seen those flowers before in her life.
"They're called Plumerias," Lena said with a smile. "They're pretty rare."
"They remind me of my mother," Kara said with a wistful tone in her voice.
Supergirl floated down into the field and stood amongst the flowers as petals from a nearby Plumeria tree floated around her.
Thanks to the moonlight, the white petals that sat and floated around her seemed to glow with a gentleness that made Supergirl's wounded heart ache.
[Flashback Scene: National City]
Kara walked into her office and gasped.
Her entire office was filled with white Plumeria flowers.
Kara felt her face heat up as a smile formed on her face. She picked up a bouquet of the flower and held it up to her face. There was only one person who could have sent these.
"Lena…." Kara whispered tenderly.
Supergirl slowly reached down and plucked a Plumeria from its bush and held it in her hand for a moment, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
[Flashback Scene: National City]
"So, my office is overflowing with flowers," Kara noted with a bashful smile as she looked at Lena.
"Really?" Lena playfully replied with a coy expression on her face.
"Yeah," Kara confirmed
Kara began to smile at one another before Kara let out a shy giggle, clearly flustered by the smile on Lena's face.
"You didn't have to do that," Kara said with a soft expression.
Lena let her smile linger for a moment as an emotion Kara didn't recognize appeared in Lena's eyes. "Yeah, I did," Lena gently replied, a soft smile forming on her face.
Tears began to fall down Supergirl's eyes as she held the flower close to her chest. Her heart was now ripped open, letting loose the depth of her pain and grief.
Supergirl fell to her knees, causing a wave of petals to rise in the air as she began to sob, her cries flowing away with the breeze.
The heroine knew that as National City's champion, she would have to return, but for now, in a field of the flower that reminded her of the woman she loved, Kara Zor-El could openly drown in her sorrow.
