The Hopeless Night: The Phantom in our Heart
Chapter Two: Plumeria
[Opening Scene - Flashback: National City]
"I was thinking of getting this cut," Kara muttered, referring to her hair as she sat on the floor of her apartment. Lena, who laid on Kara's couch, stopped running her hands through the honey blonde's hair.
"Now, why would you do that?" Lena questioned as she looked down at Kara.
Kara angeled her head to look up at her and said, "I don't know. I mean, I've had it long, ever since I was little. I guess it would be something different for a change."
Lena didn't respond for a moment. Instead, she allowed her fingers to play in Kara's hair. "I quite like your hair at this length," Lena admitted. "It reminds me of the breeze on a summer day."
Kara let out a laugh, which sounded like music to Lena's ears. "Now, now, hear me out," Lena said before Kara could interject. "I know it's a weird analogy, but it's true. Imagine yourself in the summer, and you're stuck outside for the majority of it. At the hottest part of the day, you're looking for relief of any kind. Then, you feel it."
Lena let a wistful smile appear on her face as she continued, "For a few moments, you barely feel the soft caress of a cool breeze brush against your cheek, and at that moment, you feel the relief you've been seeking, but then it's gone. You wish that it would come back again and bring you that gentle relief, but it doesn't, and it leaves you wanting for more."
Lena let a tender smile appear on her face as she stared at the back of Kara's head as she whispered, "That's why I like your long hair. It's like the summer breeze given life, Kara."
At the sound of Kara's soft gasp, Lena's face became scarlet red.
She had not meant to go on a tangent like that.
It was quiet in Kara's apartment for a moment as the television played in the background, and for a moment, Lena felt she had overstepped her bounds. But after what felt like an eternity, Kara whispered, "That's the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me…."
Kara then angled her face at Lena, allowing the black-haired woman to observe the most radiant smile she had ever seen in her life. "Thank you," Kara whispered.
[Change Scene - Present Time: DEO]
Hearing the muffled sound of people talking, Lena slowly came back to reality. Bitterly, Lena wished she could return to that dream and back to a simpler time when it was just the two of them.
But unfortunately, she might as try and catch the wind.
Drowsily, Lena opened her eyes.
Everything was blurry for a moment as Lena tried to focus. Instead, all she could see was a shape of a black blob talking to a purple blob.
"You think they'll wake up soon?" A familiar voice asked as the muffled sound slowly becoming clearer.
"If they do, Rao help us," another familiar voice dryly replied as the images straightened out to reveal two figures to her.
"R-Rao?" Lena mumbled, her voice sounding exhausted to her ears. She blinked a few times and then, the two figures became crystal clear, causing her heart to seize up in shock.
"Hey, look whose awake," Alex Danvers said with a lazy wave before she turned back to Nia, who also gave a wave. "Morning, sunshine," Alex said. "How have you been?"
"Alex?" Lena muttered as she held the side of her head, only to feel a bandage wrapped around her forehead. She glanced down at her clothes, which was just a thrown-on form-fitting black t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and green sneakers, and saw that there were tears in several areas.
"Hey Nia, she remembered my name," Alex said, which caused Nia to snort in amusement.
"Can we not be catty for a moment?" Lena muttered as she looked around until she spotted two familiar faces.
The first one was an African-American woman with black afro-centric hair, which the woman styled in a pompadour to her left. Lena was reminded of that pop star Janelle Monae anytime she looked at her.
And the second one was a Latino-American woman with flowing black hair and a dull green tattoo around her right eye reminiscent of the Lantern each Green Lantern held. Lena was often reminded of Diane Guerrero when she looked at her.
They were still unconscious but alive, and that filled Lena with relief.
"What are you two doing in Coast City?" Lena questioned. "I thought National City was your jurisdiction."
Alex and Nia exchanged a look before Nia mumbled, "I just remembered, I need to be somewhere not here. Excuse me," before she left the room immediately.
"Well, Miss Luthor," Alex began with a smirk. "We are in National City."
Lena's eyes widened in surprise at this.
"That can't be," Lena said.
"Well, it is," Alex replied. "Do you think any of us knew you were in Coast City of all places?"
Lena paused.
When she had left National City, she did so suddenly and without warning. Lena even made the painful steps of making sure no one would figure out she was leaving and where she was going by both bribes and threats of legal action.
Of course, they wouldn't have known where she had gone.
"But that shouldn't be possible. We shouldn't be in National City," Lena said.
"Well, you are," Alex said with an edge in her voice. "Welcome back, Ghost."
"Will you both shut up?" A voice groaned out.
Lena looked to the pompadour-wearing woman and said, "So that's what wakes you up, Sojourner? People talking."
"People talking loudly," The woman corrected before she glanced at Alex, her dark green eyes shining with delight. "But if you had told me the person you were talking to was so cute, maybe I wouldn't have minded."
"look at you waking up all fresh," Alex stated with a slight grin before she walked to the bed that Sojourner occupied and held out her hand. "Alex Danvers," Alex introduced.
"Sojourner Mullein. Just call me Jo," Jo replied and with a growing grin as she shook Alex's hand. "A pleasure to meet you, Alex."
Lena could hear the flirtatious tone in Jo's voice and narrowed her eyes. "Don't get too acquainted," Lena said with a wary tone in her voice. "We won't be here for long."
"True….But where is "Here," and how did we get here?" Jo questioned.
"You're in National City. Home to Supergirl," Alex said with a pointed stare to Lena, who held back a flinch in response to her name. "As for the "how," that's what I was asking Miss Luthor before you woke up," Alex answered.
"Supergirl? Forgive me, but I've been in gone from Earth for a few years," Jo told her. "Who is Supergirl?"
"She's Superman's cousin," A new voice answered, prompting both Lena and Jo to turn to the Latina. "Jessica Cruz," Jessica introduced. "And to answer your question, Alex, we can teleport ourselves long distances using our rings. The only caveat is the place we teleport. It has to be a place where we feel safe."
Lena frowned.
"Interesting," Alex said. "So that means Miss Luthor feels safe in National City."
"I do not," Lena replied instantly.
"Dial back the anger," Jo said as she swung her feet off the bed and stood up to glance at her clothes, which consisted of a black t-shirt with the word "DANGEREOUS" written in white and placed on the shirt vertically, aqua jean pants, and black sneakers.
Jo groaned when she noticed the various tears in her attire. "I just bought these," Jo groaned out.
"I better call Sam. She's going to be furious," Jessica mumbled as she got up off her bed and dipped her hand into her leather jacket's right pocket. Jessica wore a simple black dress with a black leather jacket and a pair of heels.
"Sam will be fine," Lena said with a huff. "What we need to do is get out of here."
"You sound like you're in a rush," Alex noted. "Why is that exactly?"
Lena exchanged a look between Jo and Jessica before Jo replied, "Sorry, Alex. That's Green Lantern affair."
"Green Lantern?" Alex questioned.
"The Green Lantern Corps," a familiar voice chimed out from above them, causing Lena's heart to stop and her body to stiffen.
She didn't dare lookup.
She didn't dare to face her.
"Celestial knights for the Guardians of the Universe," the voice continued. "Embued with incredible powers, gifted to them due to their iron-will and courageousness in the face of fear. One of the strongest forces of good in all of space."
Finally, she stood beside a surprised Alex, allowing Lena to look at her. Unfortunately, Lena's first thing was her shorter hair, followed by her uniform and the cold expression on her face.
"Where have you been?" Alex asked. "You said you went back home, but when we tracked you, you were in Haw-"
"I was out. Simple as that," Supergirl swiftly replied, cutting the now crossed Alex off.
Lena was taken aback by how detached the Super sounded.
"Hey, Alex! J'onn wanted me to tell you that we caught Supergirl's location, she's-" Nia rushed into the room and winced when she saw Supergirl. "Well….Never mind on that."
"Now tell me, what are the esteem members of the Green Lantern Corps doing here in my city?" Supergirl's cold eyes then moved over to Lena, where she then asked, "And what are you doing here, Luthor?"
"Ouch, did it get cold in here, or is that just me?" Jo whispered to Jessica, who shrugged.
Swallowing her nerves and the pain of hearing her speak her last name as if it was poison, Lena stood up from her bed and said, "I assure you, Supergirl, we arrived here accidentally, and we will be leaving shortly."
If she wanted to play that game, Lena could as well.
"Good, leaving is all you're good at anyway," Supergirl calmly retorted, which caused anger to flair through Lena's veins.
"Whoa, that's a landmine," Jo mumbled to Jessica, who nodded in agreement while Nia winced and Alex grinned.
"How dare you?" Lena hissed out as she took a step, only to wince as pain blossomed in her left side, causing her to buckle.
For a moment, Lena saw a flicker of concern appear in her eyes before it was wiped away by the aloofness Lena was already getting used to seeing.
"Perhaps you and your teammates should rest," Nia interrupted before anything more could be said. "You guys were pretty injured when you arrived, and while you guys look somewhat healed up, aggravating your injuries may cause that progress to backslide."
"We'll be fine," Lena spat out, her eyes locked on hers. "Don't want to overstay our welcome in your city."
The deep glare between them lasted for what felt like an eternity before she coldly said, "Do whatever you like. Stay or leave. It doesn't matter to me. Just stay out of our affairs, and things will be cordial."
Just then, Brainy rushed in from behind them and said, "Supergirl. J'onn requires your assistance. He says it's urgent. And you may want to bring one of the Green Lanterns with you."
"I'll go. I'm the least injured among the three of us," Jessica said as she walked past Lena to join Brainy. The two continued to stare at one another a bit longer before she finally looked away and floated past. But as she passed her, Lena caught a familiar scent.
Plumeria.
She smelled like Plumeria.
Lena then watched as a single Plumeria flower fell from her flowing red cape and floated to the ground at her feet. Lena bent down to retrieve it with great difficulty, and when she came up, she observed the flower.
"Well, judging from that staredown, you two have some history," Jo said.
Lena took a deep breath, trying to steady her shaky breath and keep the tears from building in her eyes.
Quelling the pain in her heart, Lena crushed the flower in her hand as she muttered, "We had history…."
