Chapter XII (II): Trip down memory lane

When all the five lookalike guys arrive at the indicated place it's late at night, just as the Doctor wanted.

"I can't believe I'm really doing it," Singy mumbles, lighting up the Molotov bottle that Ten has equipped each of them with.

Well yes, despite having succumbed, and more than once, to the advances of a fascinating tempting Death Eater, Ten also managed to complete the job he had promised himself, sending Barty to play with the slot machine, even if this meant to change the result he had obtained on the display.

"It goes against all my principles. I mean, okay ... I've done worse as a kid, I've also tried drugs, acids, I vandalized, anything to fight boredom, but I don't like to relive it now …" the detective admits, astonishing his interlocutors.

"Ah, that's new! So Mr. Pastry also had other interests in his life!" Drinky teases him.

"And, for the record, little thing, when you went back to the TARDIS and we asked you 'Did you find him?' we didn't mean the pastry chef whose you ransacked half of the shop! - Kevin scolds him.

"I thought I'd do something nice for all of you!" the youngest of the group mumbles.

"And it was, it's just that devouring tons of sugar and calories isn't the best thing when you have a Mission. - the Doctor explains to him. - But the Cake Room will keep the sweets you brought us as new as if they just came out of the pastry shop." he heartens him.

"A Mission, I haven't had one for so long!" Barty rejoices, excited.

"Excuse me, but didn't you just finish one before your precious Doctor saved you?" Kevin asks him.

"Well, yes ... but when I'm traveling with my Second Dark Lord it seems that years have passed!" the Death Eater justifies himself, clinging to his beloved.

"Well yes, the TARDIS can do this!" Ten chuckles, before remembering why they are there.

"Coming back to us and what we are doing, Singy, trust me, if I tell you it's for a good cause!" Ten insists, throwing his Molotov bottle first, to be the pioneer.

The burning bottle shatters the glass, before causing the first explosion inside the courthouse, which is fortunately empty at that hour.

Singy gives up and mimics the Doctor's actions.

Killgrave is more reluctant about it.

"It's not my style, I usually make someone else do these things," the persuader mutters, before turning to the illusionist. "Peter, throw mine, too."

Drinky grabs it with too much enthusiasm, throwing it along with his own.

"This is not even the kind of things you have to order me, my dear brain-fucker!" he laughs, thrilled.

Although the masks conceal their faces, Ten senses the questioning look Barty is giving him. In fact, he hasn't even light his Molotov bottle up yet.

"What's wrong?" the Doctor asks him.

"And you even ask me? I am a Pureblood Wizard, I will never stoop to using these retrograde Muggle methods!" he replies disgusted.

"Come on, I'll take care of it!" Drinky snatches the explosive bottle from his hand, lighting it and throwing it, breaking another glass.

"What's the matter with you? Do you have a past as a hooligan?" Kevin asks him, intrigued, hugging him.

"Ooh, you too, really?" the detective turns to the Illusionist, feeling less alone in that area.

"No comment. Let's say that I like to amaze my crowd with special effects" the person concerned explains. "I would like to use more fire in my shows, real fire, but those fucking shitheads never listen to me! Could you please lend me your power, dear my brain-fucker?" he makes Kevin laugh.

"Look, my Doctor," Barty murmurs, before pulling out his wand, as excited as a child who knows that his father has come to see him playing his Quidditch match. " Lacarnum Inflamarae !" he pronounces, drawing a half curve and then pulling his arm down.

Small fireballs come out of his wand and hurl themselves on the already broken windows.

Barty knows he has not resorted to any Dark Spell, indeed, it's a rather easy one, but it can help because he practiced it in a closed place, which allows the material that he made flammable to spread very quickly.

The Doctor rubs against him, despite the many layers of tissue that divide them.

"You know, Barty, it makes me a certain effect to see you at work in this way …" he whispers, forgetting for a moment where he is and what his job is.

Singy is there to remind everyone.

"You four, you will have plenty of time to flirt later, now stay focused, the police will be here in a moment." the detective separates the two couples. "I used to be the police!" he sighs, melancholy.

Singy is not wrong. Given the short distance that separates them from the district, the police didn't even have to wait for someone to sound the alarm, they saw for themselves what was happening.

Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Detective Sergeant Ellie MIller quickly rushed to the scene, with a small team in tow.

"Bloody drug-addicted whelps who have fun being vandals, I'm going to catch them and throw them in jail for one night, let's see if they'll still want to do such annoying things!" Alec grumbles, trying to get closer.

At the same time, both firefighters arrived to put out the fire, and Maggie and Olly from the Broadchurch Echo to take pictures and write an article.

Barty is adrenaline-pumped and that abundance of Muggles causes him to lose control before Ten can figure it out.

"MORSMORDRE!" he yells pointing his wand at the sky.

That evening is particularly low-starry, which makes the terrifying emerald-green skull with a snake-like tongue protruding from it even more visible.

"So it works here too! Yes!" the Death Eater rejoices, with the same enthusiasm of that night of the Quidditch World Cup. "Now the trip down memory lane is complete!"

."Oh no, Barty, what did you do?" the Doctor mutters, shocked.

All the people of Broadchurch look up to the sky, terrified and confused.

Killgrave also notices the team taking photos and acts in time, advancing towards them.

"There is nothing interesting up there in the sky. Delete the photos you took and just stay focused on the courthouse fire."

"Very well done, Kevin!" the Doctor congrats Kevin, leaving Barty even more disheartened.

- Of course, what a fool! What did I expect? That's a mark that honors my First Dark Lord, of course my Second Dark Lord isn't okay with it. I need one that pays homage to him! " he silently plots.

"Alec ... do you see that ... strange thing in the sky, too?" Ellie murmurs, worried.

"It will be some kind of latest generation fireworks ... those thugs just want to scare us, but they are very wrong!" the Inspector snarls.

"Stop everyone, police! Advance towards us, slowly. " Alec proclaims loudly, authority clear in his tone.

Hidden by his mask, Singy seems to take his request literally, because he tries to get as close to their goal as possible, but his namesake notices it.

"Come here, you, it's not convenient to leave the group," he pulls him back to their side.

"Do you also see how beautiful and charismatic he is? The self-confidence he spreads in every gesture?" the younger comments, with eyes full of admiration - Who knows if one day I'll be like him."

"Very well, now that we have drawn their attention which is what we wanted, Barty, put everything back in place. I know you can do it." Ten exhorts him.

"But ... what? My Lord …"

- You can't really expect me to let such an important structure, used to make justice triumph, burn until there will be nothing but rubble, can you?" the Time Lord persists in his cause.

"My Doctor, do I really have to?"

"C'mon, Barty, be a good boy."

The Dark Wizard certainly can't oppose and albeit reluctantly launches an ' Aguamenti ' that throws water on the flames, before they spread too much and a ' Reparo ' that repairs all the broken glass.

"But ... what the hell is going on?" Ellie mumbles, shocked.

Killgrave knows he's within range, he just needs to scream a little.

"Everyone, except the detective man, Singy and my Peter, forget what you saw!" he makes everyone hear it.

"Your Peter?" Drinky gloats, pinching him playfully on the side.

- Don't flatter yourself, it was to distinguish yourself from the other," the persuader explains grumpily. "I will never call you by that stupid nickname!"

"I like this matter less and less …" Alec mumbles.

"What matter? What happened? I don't even know why we're here!" Ellie looks at him confused, as well as the rest of the policemen.

"Bloody hell, are you kidding me, right? The court that was on fire ... and then it returned bloody normal?" he blurts out, understanding less and less.

"Alec, are you sure you're okay?" his colleague looks at him worriedly.

"You, bloody five thugs! Do nothing more and come straight to us. Last warning!" yells the detective.

"What do we do now?" Kevin asks the Doctor.

"Now it's time for my trip down memory lane," he chuckles. "Three two one…. Let's run!" he commands and the five guys run away.

"Bloody hell, don't even try to escape!" Alec sets off in pursuit, before Ellie can even understand why.

The physicality of the actor who plays them allows all the five guys to run very easily, but in the same way it also allows Alec to do that, who perhaps because fresh from a pacemaker intervention, must be careful not to try too hard, but he manages however not to lose sight of them.

The Doctor and his companions arrive close to the TARDIS, which to Alec's eyes looks just like a normal phone box.

The Doctor is the first to enter, of course.

- What a fool, he trapped himself !- Alec ponders, thinking the same thing when he sees the second come in as well.

However, when he sees the third, fourth and fifth hooligan entering that tiny phone box as well, something is not right.

- What the hell…. ? -

The Detective cautiously approaches the phone box, the doors of which have been left open on purpose.

With one hand on his holster, Alec decides to enter that phone box.

Those in there are waiting for nothing else, especially one of them.

" Stupeficium! " someone shouts in front of him and for the Detective it is too late to do anything, with a mysterious force that smashes him against a wall.

"Barty, we said kindly! " Ten scolds him.

"This is kindly!" The Dark Wizard defends himself, while everyone looks at the newcomer, unconscious.

Not that they can look at him much, as he passed out face down, with his hands forward as an unconditional reflex to ward off his fall.

"You should have let me do the talking!" Killgrave protests.

"And take away this minimum of fun from me? After restoring the court,I needed it!" Barty retorts.

"I'm the only one who can't have his fun. I have a rifle that shoots tranquilizers, what the fuck do I need it if you don't let me use it?" Drinky complains.

"I'm going to eat something, let me know when he wakes up!" Singy informs everyone.

By now he would know how to get to the Cake Room even with his eyes closed.

- Bear them, Doctor, bear them, they are your Companions, you love your Companions, - the Time Lord repeats like a mantra, clutching his temples with one hand and his eyes closed. - Especially one, you love him much more than you love any Companion." he reopens them, to look at Barty and is instantly back in his good mood.

"You will eat later, Mr. Pastry, this one is already coming to his senses!" Drinky yells, stopping his namesake in time, who rushes curiously.

Indeed it is true, Alec began to slowly move his legs and then his head.

"So you were telling the truth, Barty, you have been kind, after all." the Doctor, recognizes before their host opens his eyes and looks up.
