High above the planet Earth, on the very edges of the atmosphere, Sky Spy floated silently through the near-vacuum as it tirelessly monitored the planet for any signs of Decepticon activity.
Automated sensors detected an approaching piece of space debris, a burned-out satellite, and Sky Spy manoeuvred out of the way, allowing the debris to pass harmlessly by. As it did so it detected an anomaly on the surface below. Instantly it broadcast a signal to the Ark.
Moments later the Autobots had assembled in the control room. They stood in front of Teletraan 1 and stared at the main monitor in astonishment. The screen showed a pristine white beach with a blue ocean and people relaxing on the shore. Without warning a swarm of creatures came scurrying out of the sea and up onto the beach. They resembled Earth fish of a wide range of species, but each one was laying on a metallic platform with four insect-like legs, curved ribs that held them in place and flexible tubes going into their gills. People leaped to their feet in alarm as the fish scampered all around them like rats.
"Is this a movie or something?" Bumblebee asked.
"I'm afraid not Bumblebee" Optimus Prime replied grimly. "Sky Spy recorded these images on the coast of Japan."
"Ya think the Decepticons are behind this?" Ironhide asked.
"Possible but unlikely" Optimus replied. "This doesn't seem like something Megatron would do."
"Well it's certainly unusual but is there any need for us to get involved? The humans don't seem to be in any danger" said Prowl.
Optimus stared at the screen for a moment before replying. What Prowl said was correct, but the Autobot leader sensed that the strange walking fish were far more than they seemed. He felt a dark sense of foreboding deep within his spark that something terrible was going to happen.
And he had learned over the millennia to trust his instincts.
"There may be more to this then meets the eye. We need to investigate this mystery."
"We're with you Optimus" said Bumblebee.
"I know my friends." He tapped a key and opened a communication channel. "Optimus Prime calling Skyfire."
The Autobot scientist's face appeared on the monitor. "This is Skyfire, I read you Optimus" he said.
"Return to Autobot headquarters immediately. Something strange is going on in Japan and we need you to get us there at once."
"Understood. I'm on my way."
Soon afterwards Skyfire was soaring through the stratosphere in his jet mode. On-board were Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Prowl, Perceptor and Trailbreaker.
"I still don't get it" said Bumblebee. "Even if it isn't the Decepticons, why would anybody strap a ton of fish onto walking machines? What's their purpose?"
"That's what we're here to find out" Optimus reminded him patiently.
"Ah don't like it. Somethin ain't right about this" said Ironhide.
Before anyone could reply Skyfire spoke up. "We're approaching Haneda airport now. I'm requesting landing permission… Wait, something's wrong!"
"What is it Skyfire?" Optimus asked.
"See for yourself."
An image of the airport appeared on the monitor. The grounds had been completely overrun by the walking fish, covering the runways in a writhing mass of scaly flesh and rusty metal. Worse still a human airplane was coming in for a landing.
"If that plane touches down those things will completely mess up the landing gear. The plane will crash!"
"Trailbreaker, Ironhide, clear the runway!" Optimus ordered.
"Ya get it Prime!"
"Leave it to us!"
Ironhide and Trailbreaker leapt up out of their seats and ran to the cargo bay where Skyfire had already opened the bay doors. Without hesitation they jumped out and plummeted straight down, the wind whooshing past them. They landed on the grass next to the runway with loud thuds, absorbing the impact harmlessly.
"This'll get them out of the way" said Trailbreaker. He activated his force field, the dome of orange light bulldozing the mass of walking fish off of the runway, the sharp tips of their legs scraping futilely against it. He then deactivated the force field.
"And this'll keep them there" Ironhide added. Before the fish could swarm back onto the tarmac he froze them solid with a jet of liquid nitrogen.
As the plane came in to land the two Autobots ran in front of it, Trailbreaker continuing to use his force field to push the walking fish out of the plane's path and Ironhide freezing them in place so they couldn't rush back in once Trailbreaker had moved past. The air was filled with revolting squelching and crunching noises as more of the fish were crushed under their feet but they ignored it. All of their focus was on bringing the plane in safely. Finally the aircraft slowed and stopped.
"Thank the Matrix Prime brought us here" said Trailbreaker. "I don't want to think about what might have happened if he hadn't."
"Me neither ol' buddy" Ironhide agreed.
A few moments later Skyfire had touched down. While Optimus was explaining to the airport authorities that the Autobots had come to investigate the walking fish, Ironhide and the others heard a voice say "excuse me."
They looked over to see a young woman with long brown hair and brown eyes. She wore blue denim shorts, a white tank top with pink trim and orange sneakers. Slung over her shoulder was a light grey travel bag. A silver ring gleamed on her left finger as she bowed her head.
"Thank you very much for saving us."
Ironhide chuckled. "You're welcome lil' lady but we were jus' doin our duty."
She smiled briefly but then her expression turned serious. "I would like to talk with you all but I have to go. I'm worried about Tadashi, my fiancé."
"What happened?" Bumblebee asked.
"We were talking on the phone when he screamed and the line was cut off" she explained. "I have to get back to Tokyo to find him"
Prowl frowned. "I've been monitoring the news broadcasts. The roads are impassable."
Skyfire looked thoughtful. "I would be happy to fly you there but I'm needed here."
"No problem. We brought along some jetpacks." said Bumblebee. Just then Optimus walked over. Bumblebee turned to him. "Optimus, I…"
"It's all right Bumblebee, I heard everything" he replied. "Of course you can go."
She bowed again. "Thank you so much. Oh, I'm Kaori."
"A pleasure to meet you Kaori-san. I hope you find your fiancé soon."
Bumblebee donned a jetpack and put an arm around Kaori, holding her firmly but gently. "Don't worry. I'll get you back to Tadashi" he said reassuringly.
"Thank you again" she said.
Bumblebee ignited his jet pack and they flew away, the other Autobots watching them go.
