Author's Note: This is my first fanfiction and it will probably be the last as well. English is not my first language, so I apologize in advance because the variety of words is not too wide and because it is a very short story, but I still tried to do my best. I think that deepening the mood of Historia after she becomes queen, is very interesting, being she a complicated character with several facets. Please, leave feedback, positive or negative, if you found the idea interesting.
~ What happened to Historia? ~
After becoming queen, she dedicated herself to helping orphans and people in need and is admired throughout Paradis so much that they gave her the name "Cattle-Farming Goddess".
The Queen would be responsible for the political decisions on the country, but in reality it is the army that decides for her; what she must do is to represent the figure of the queen. She is quite sure that the choices they make are good, but above all she could not refuse anyway since she is forced to approve all of them. In fact, even if she rejected the army's proposals, they would pass anyway, since her word doesn't really matter.
Historia is happy to be able to help her nation, to give a home to the homeless and a hot meal to the hungry who cannot afford it, and for this reason alone she thinks it was worth becoming queen. Not that she had a choice. There is torment in the queen's heart: Ymir had always told her to live her life with pride and to choose for herself, but in the end the life she was living at that moment was imposed on her. The problem is that she hadn't had the opportunity to refuse, and even if she tried to escape now, for example, she would be stopped immediately by some soldiers and put back in her place. Is it a life that has been decided by others worth living? Even before she was born, it had been decided that she should inherit the founder titan, after which she could only live for another 13 years because of the Ymir's curse, and above all she would continue the carnage that had always touched the royal family with the passage of the founder. And just when Historia had finally rebelled against her father, rejecting the unjust life that had been imposed on her and the eternal spiral of sacrifices of the Reiss family, she was forced to become queen: but a queen only in name, since all the choices were made without her.
What had she fought so hard for? What was all that for? Was that the life she deserved? Historia was struggling with her conscience on these questions to which she could not find an answer. The childhood she spent on the farm was a difficult time, which marked her deeply, as she knew that she was considered only a burden to others. If she had never been born, perhaps it would have been easier for everyone. And so she joined the survey corps, trying to die heroically and pass as a martyr. But before she could die like this, she met a very important person along her way: Ymir. Yeah… Ymir. Historia will never forget when she abandoned her. And so, Ymir made her realize how much her life is actually worth living and told her that the two of them are more similar than it seems. Historia cannot fully understand how their stories are so similar but decides to blindly trust Ymir. It seems that both are determined to live their lives thinking only for themselves, but inexplicably (apparently) Ymir abandons Historia at the last moment, and Historia will carry this pain with her for a good part of her life.
This is precisely what Ymir and Historia are different in. Ymir always appeared as a selfish person, but in reality she was the most selfless of all. Ymir decides to help Bertolt and Reiner, because she is the only one who, when they were trying to escape, was able to understand them, and besides she felt indebted for devouring their friend Marcel. She also does not take Historia with her because she thinks there is still a future inside the walls and taking her outside would have been extremely dangerous for her and hardly a good thing. But this Historia could not know, although over time she had begun to accept the actions of Ymir. Understanding them would have been quite difficult, also due to the lack of information needed to understand how things really are. Instead, Krista has always appeared as an unselfish and kind girl, but in reality it was a mask. Historia is not the sweet and kind Krista Lenz... but she is not a bad person either. Surely, she has a part of herself that is selfish, like any other character, but it is these weaknesses that make her a more human and realistic person.
~ Several months have passed. Historia has read Ymir's letter (In this case I'm referring to the manga version, where the letter also contains Ymir's past) ~
Historia finally understood. Their lives were more similar than it seemed. The pain they both felt was very great, and life was not very good with them. But they reacted, they struggled, they stood up despite fate having made them fall several times. The important thing is not to be strong, but to know how to get up and react accordingly. Ymir's greatest regret was that she was unable to marry Historia. Although it was Ymir who put a spanner in the works on her own, she had to sacrifice herself for the good of all. Both were forced to use another name, but Ymir decided not to change it and to wear it with pride. Historia, on the other hand, had initially chosen to be Krista in order to be accepted: behaving well with everyone, she hoped that she would no longer have to feel like an unloved person.
Historia had understood Ymir's intentions, and if on the one hand she had taken off a burden, on the other hand she was very sad since she was aware that she would never be able to see Ymir again. She already felt it, but she had finally been sure of it. At that time Historia did not forgive Ymir. All the sadness she had gone through, could not vanish so into thin air. If she ever decided to forgive her, it would have taken a long time. Only time heals such serious wounds; the person who had saved her and first understood her true personality had disappeared forever from her life. But Ymir's sacrifice was not in vain. What was the importance of that sacrifice to Historia? It is she who has the task of finding the meaning and ensuring that it has not been in vain.
Historia will do everything in her power to help those in need. Is the life she is leading truly right? Although fate meant that she could not avoid being a queen, if she became so it was also thanks to the choices that she made. It is difficult to say what is right and what is wrong. The world is not fair to everyone, not even to those who deserve it, and in a world as gray and complicated as that of Attack on Titan, it is extremely true. But despite everything, Historia will continue to live with pride.
