(8)-The Basement.

Ronnie, standing in front of Tommy, pulled the switch and turned on the basement light, which was one light-bulb on the ceiling, lighting up the place so he and Tommy could see. After the Doyle family dinner, Ronnie bought Tommy down here to the basement to help him get over his fear of the Boogyman, since the kid believed the creature lived down here.

"You know what?" Ronnie asked.

"What?" Tommy asked.

"You're right. This is a really scary basement." Ronnie said, looking around the place. "Maybe i should board it up. It reminds me of the basement in the house i grew up in when i was a kid." He said. "And guess what?"

"What?" Tommy asked.

"I thought the Boogyman lived in my basement too." Ronnie answered.

"I know. You told me. And now he's after me." Tommy said.

"I said that just to scare you. Like your Grandpa? He made the Boogyman up just to scare me into behaving. I don't even know who came up with that stupid name." Ronnie said.

"Dad...the Boogyman did come after you." Tommy said.

"No, he didn't, buddy." Ronnie said. "I'm sorry." He said as he knelt down to Tommy's angle. "Like i said, that was a story your Grandpa told me just to get me to behave. It's not real."

"He's real. I can feel him. When i turn off the lights, it's like i've opened a door for him." Tommy said.

"Calm down. Okay? Take a deep breath." Ronnie said.

Tommy and Ronnie both took a deep breath, then breathed out.

"Alright. Do you really think there's anything that i wouldn't do to protect you? I will turn on every light in this house. I will go put giant flood-lights out on the front lawn and i'll put 'em in every direction. But you know what? That's not going to stop the fear." Ronnie explained. "So let's say that there is a Boogyman. Big deal. The only thing you need to be concerned with is the light inside you..." He said. "right here." He stated, placing his right index finger on Tommy's chest. The man then imitated an explosion with his right hand. "Wow. You're light is strong."

"How do you know?" Tommy asked.

"Cause i'm your Dad." Ronnie answered.

"Does every kid have this light?" Tommy asked.

"Yeah." Ronnie answered.

"Even Lonnie?" Tommy asked.

"Yeah. His just isn't that bright right now. I tell you what, we're gonna test this out. Okay? I want you to stay right here...and we are gonna count to ten." Ronnie said.

"No, Dad." Tommy said.

"Yes. It's just ten seconds." Ronnie said.

"No." Tommy said.

"Okay, i'm gonna be at the top of the stairs, waiting. Okay?" Ronnie said.

"Okay." Tommy said.

"You can do this." Ronnie said before standing up and going over to the stairs. "And remember, buddy..." He said as he turned to face his son. "you're a man." He said before heading up the stairs.

Now alone in the basement, Tommy began the countdown. "1..." He started before looking around the creepy place. "2...3...4...5..." The 8-year old was then startled by the sound of something falling. "6, 7, 8, 9, 10." He finished counting before rushing up the stairs and out of the basement.
