(21)-The Babysitter 3.
Laurie and Tommy were now sitting back on the sofa, watching THE THING on TV while Laurie was twiddling a strain of her hair with her left hand.
"What about the Jack-O-Lantern?" Tommy asked.
"After the movie." Laurie answered.
"What about the rest of my comic-books?" Tommy asked.
"After the Jack-O-Lantern." Laurie said, giving Tommy a brief glance before re-focusing on the TV.
"What about the Boogyman?" Tommy asked.
Laurie looked at Tommy. "There's no such thing."
"Richie said he was coming after me tonight." Tommy said.
"You believe everything Richie tells you?" Laurie asked as she let got of her strain of hair and put her left hand down.
"No." Tommy answered. And that was true. He didn't believe everything Richie told us. But too much had happened today for the 11-year old not to be right about the Boogyman coming after Tommy tonight.
"Tommy, Halloween night...is when people play tricks on each other. It's all make-believe, i think Richie was just trying to scare you." Laurie explained.
"I saw the Boogyman. I saw him outside." Tommy said, still sticking to his claim that he had seen the creature outside earlier. Laurie had no evidence to support her claim. What made her so sure the Boogyman wasn't real? She didn't know. She'd never seen him.
"There was nobody outside." Laurie reminded.
"There was." Tommy said.
"What'd he look like?" Laurie asked.
"The Boogyman." Tommy answered. Every fiber of his being made him profoundly uncomfortable. But the way Laurie explained everything to him...the logical answers...the assurance...it made him feel safe.
"We're not getting anywhere." Laurie said. "Alright. The Boogyman can only come out on Halloween night, right?"
"Right." Tommy agreed.
"Well, i'm here tonight. And i'm not about to let anything happen to you." Laurie assured.
"Promise?" Tommy asked.
"Promise." Laurie said.
Tommy wanted to voice something else, but couldn't. He realized he had nothing else to say. Laurie would have an answer for any doubts he expressed. That's the way his parents, the school shrink, and all other grown-ups were. There was no convincing them that monsters existed. At this rate, he had two options: He could either shut up about it...or keep babbling on and on about the Boogyman all night and get nowhere. He chose the first option. Wanting to forget about the Boogyman, Tommy decided to change the subject. "Can we make the Jack-O-Lantern now?"
Laurie held out her left hand and Tommy gave her five. "Let's go."
The 17-year old babysitter and 8-year old boy got up from the sofa and headed for the kitchen to carve the pumpkin.
