Chapter 22
Rory POV
The next couple of days seemed to fly by. Before I knew it, it was Friday night and Finn and I were headed to Friday Night Dinner then we were going to Stars Hollow for the weekend. Finn was nervous about the whole weekend because he was worried about how everyone was going to treat him after we'd been apart for so long. I told him that everything would be fine that they'd all understood that it hadn't been his choice.
When we pulled into the driveway at the Gilmores, I noticed that Luke's truck was in the driveway as well as Dad's car meaning that that Dad and Grandma Francine were here as well. I looked over at Finn and saw a look of panic. "It's going to be fine." I told him and he nodded. We climbed out of the car and made our way to the door. I rang the bell and the maid let us in. I handed her my jacket and then I grabbed Finn's hand and we made our way to the living room. "Good evening everyone." I said.
"Ror, good you're here." My dad said.
I stopped in my tracks noticing the woman that was sitting beside my dad. I'd seen her before at various functions but I couldn't believe that she was here. "Uh, yeah sorry. I got stuck working on that new case." I said as Finn and I sat beside Mom and Luke on one of the couches.
"Yeah, I'm sorry that I threw that on you last minute." Dad said.
Grandpa walked over and handed Finn and I our drinks. I took a drink of my coke. "It's no problem. Actually, Colin is the opposing counsel so we should be able to resolve fairly quickly. We're having a working lunch on Monday to see if we can resolve without having to go to court." I told him hoping that he would be happy.
"Sounds good." Dad said.
"Now that's enough shop talk. Finn, how are you?" Grandma said.
"I'm good Emily. The jet lag has finally worn off and I'm in the process of moving our corporate offices to Hartford." Finn told her.
"That's good. Does that mean that you'll be moving in with Rory or will you have separate housing?" Grandpa asked.
"Of course he'll have his own place, Richard. They wouldn't live together without at least being engaged." Grandma Francine said.
"Actually…" I started, looking over at Finn and he nodded. "Finn has moved in with me at my condo." I said waiting for the storm.
"Rory, this is not a good idea. Just imagine what people will say." Grandma Emily said. "Society will have a fit."
"And I don't care what society will say. Finn and I both run successful businesses. I attend functions, I make nice with business associates. But my personal life… is just that. It is my personal life and I will not have it on display for the world to see." I told everyone. I looked over at Mom and she had this big grin on her face. "Now would someone care to explain to me why she's here." I said glaring at my dad's guest.
Finn squeezed my hand. "Be nice." He whispered.
"Rory…" Dad said at the same time.
"I just want to know." I said getting up and walking over to the drink cart and poured myself a small glass of wine and walked back to the couch, sitting back down. I took a sip of the wine, closing my eyes. When I opened my eyes, everyone was staring at me. "I'm fine."
After about ten minutes, the maid came in and announced that dinner was ready. While everyone headed to the dining room, Finn held me back. "Are you okay?" He asked me.
I wrapped my arms around his waist. "I talked to my therapist and she thinks that I need to set limits for myself. She thinks that as long as I'm not getting drunk every night that I'll be okay." I told him. He nodded. We made our way to the dinner table.
The rest of dinner was unusually quiet. Dad mentioned that he and Sarah were dating now. I rolled my eyes at that. Six months from now she'd be gone. After dinner, Dad, Sarah and Grandma Francine left. Mom and Luke said that they needed to get home cause Luke had an early delivery. So it was just Finn and I having coffee with Grandma and Grandpa. "Rory, I need to ask you for a favor and if you can't do it then I understand." Grandma said as I took a drink of my coffee.
"Sure Grandma. Hopefully I can help." I said sitting my coffee down.
"Do you remember Aunt Hope?" She asked me.
"Of course. We visited her between Yale and law school. Is everything okay with her?" I asked.
"No, no. She's fine. But she's coming to Hartford this year for the holidays and she's wanting to update her will while she's here." Grandma said.
"Oh. Well it'll be nice to have her this year. Now obviously I can't do it but I'm sure Dad wouldn't mind or even Colin." I said. I thought about it for a minute. "Actually Grandma… Colin might be a better fit as he actually practices international law as well." I told her.
"Splendid. Do you think you could mention it to him?" She asked me.
I took another drink of my coffee. "Of course not. I'll mention it Monday during our lunch." I said.
"Thank you Rory. This will bring easy to Hope's mind." Grandma said.
"Of course." I said. I looked at the time. "We should get going. We're spending the weekend in Stars Hollow." I told her.
"Oh of course." She said as we stood up and made our way to the front door. The maid handed me my coat and I put it on. "You'll call me after you talk to Colin?" She asked.
"Of course Grandma. Good night." I said following Finn out the door.
When we got to Mom's, we had to be quiet so we didn't wake Luke up. However, I should have known that Mom would be waiting up for us. Finn took our bags to my old room. "So everything okay? It took you a while to get out of there." She said.
"Yeah. Apparently, Aunt Hope is coming to Hartford for the holidays this year and she wants to update her will." I told Mom as I walked into the kitchen. I grabbed a coffee cup and poured myself a cup.
"She is?" Mom asked and I nodded. "Well you can't do it, can you?"
I shook my head. "It would be unethical. It would be like Dad writing up legal documents for me. Before law school, Colin's dad was my lawyer. Now Colin is." I told her and she nodded. "So what… Grandma asked who could do it?" I nodded. "Who'd you suggest?"
"Ethically, Colin would be the best. So I told her that I would talk to him when I meet him for lunch on Monday." I tell her as my cell starts ringing. I pull it out of my jacket pocket. I looked at the caller ID. "Hey." I said.
"My dad had a heart attack." He said.
I froze. "What?" I asked.
"My thoughts exactly."
"I didn't think that anything could bring him down. Where are you?" I asked. I looked up and saw Finn and Mom staring at me.
"Heading to the airport. But I'm gonna need the power of attorney when I get there. I have to get of the PR nightmare before it gets too bad."
"Did you call Juliet? I mean she is your publicist." I said.
"Not yet. I was hoping that you'd call her for me." He said.
"You know I will. As your attorney I have to advise you to not speak to the press until we know more." I told him.
"This is me. I am the press." He said. "I'll call you when I land." He said ending the call.
"Babe?" I heard Finn say.
I sat down in the nearest chair. "Mitchum Huntzberger had a heart attack." I said.
"Oh my god." Mom said.
"That was Logan?" Finn asked and I nodded.
"I need my laptop. It's going to be a long night." I said and he nodded. I went to go change into my seats before I started working. I had to get ahead of this before things got bad. After I changed, I looked up at Finn who had pulled me into his arms. "I love you." I said resting my forehead against his chest.
"I love you. Anything that I can do?" He asked.
I shook my head. "No. I have to call Juliet and then Steph. She's gonna have to go by the office and pull everything I need and then bring it to me. It's gonna be a long weekend. Logan was heading to the airport. I'm gonna need for you and Colin to pick him up. Keep the press away from him. I let go of him and went back to the kitchen. I looked at Mom. "Sorry Mom, but we'll have to go back to Hartford in the morning." I told her.
"It's okay babe. You can make it up to me. Hey maybe for New Year's we go to a resort." She said.
"Destination retreat?" I asked and Mom nodded. "Sure whatever you want." I said. I sat at the table and called Juliet. "Hey." I said when she answered.
"Hey everything okay? You usually don't call this late." Juliet said.
"Logan just called. Mitchum had a heart attack. Logan's on his way to the airport now." I told her opening my laptop.
"Damn that sucks. Who's taking the lead on this one? You or Steph." She asked.
"Me. I'm in Stars Hollow right now but I'm headed back to Hartford in the morning." I told her.
"Okay. I'll get everything organized so that we're ready for when Logan gets here and we can just add in the details." Juliet said.
"Thanks. Call if you need anything." I said before I hung up.
It was going to be a long night and an even longer weekend. I knew that there wasn't a lot that I could do right now. I just hoped that nobody would cause a scene at the hospital. That was the last thing that Logan needed.
A/N: Okay that wasn't entirely how I wanted that chapter but of course as usual my writing just sort of took over. Big things are happening in Hartford, but it wouldn't be Hartford without a little drama… right?
