It won't be like this for long: Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Logan pulls his tesla into a parking spot close to Luke's Diner. He ignores the stares. He opens the door for Rory and helps her out. They are both dress casual. When they entered the dinner, Lane and Dave were sitting at a table in the back. When they noticed Rory and Logan, they motioned for them to join them.
The diner was not quite full, but enough people noticed them. They knew it was already all over town that they were here. Jess walks over.
"Hey, Rory, Logan. Glad you could make it. I'm afraid this mental hospital sideshow is going to be interesting. What can I get you to eat?" Jess asked. Rory and Logan both ordered. After Jess gave the order to the kitchen, Logan stepped to the counter to talk with Jess.
"Rory told me about April. I am glad that she has you and Rory to come to for help. My sister has a small shop in Hartford. She may be interested in buying Anna's shop. She can move contour clothing to Harford or her New York branch." Logan told him.
"Sure, I don't want anything to do with it. I have my hands full with the diner and my writing. If this diner didn't mean so much to so many people, I would have closed it down. I would rather be in a big city. Hanna could make a lot more money in New York or Boston."
"Yeah, New York was great, but when McKenzie and Hayden came along, we wanted them to have a smaller town experience. Not Stars Hollow mind you, but Hartford." Logan told him. They both laughed.
Jess and Logan are not best friends, but they get along. Logan knows how important Jess is to Rory, especially after Luke and Lorelai's accident. And Jess for his part knew how important Logan was to Rory.
The five of them walked to Ms. Patty's dance studio for the meeting. Hanna was meeting them there. When they arrived, they found enough seats for them to sit together. After finding a seat, Rory saw Ms. Patty and Babette sitting upfront. Ms. Patty was in a wheelchair.
"Ms. Patty, Babette, Hey are you doing tonight. I am so sorry to hear about Taylor. What are y'all going to do? Appoint a new selectman?" Rory said, looking around the room. She saw Dean and his wife, she saw Hanna slip in the back. There was Gypsy, Andrew, and beside the fire chief was southside Tilly.
"I don't recognize very many people. Where is everyone?" Rory asked as she sat down between Ms. Patty and Babette.
"Honey, we have all died out. Or we are dying out. The young ones are taking over the town. That is what this meeting is about. Taylor said he was going to make sure this town did not die." Ms. Patty told her. Rory had a funny feeling. Something was going to happen tonight and she was not going to like it.
"Well, maybe they will get started soon. I'm going back to my seat now. It was nice seeing the two of you." Rory said as she walked back to Logan and her seat. She waved at Gypsy and Andrew and a few others that she recognized.
When sat down, she motioned for the group she was with to gather closer. When they did, Rory told them that Patty said that Taylor said that he was going to make sure this town did not die. Rory told them that she had an uneasy feeling about this meeting. She told everyone to be on their toes.
Kirk stood at the podium. Rory could see the tears in his eyes. She was about to point this out to Lane when he began to speak.
"We are gathered here today," Kirk started. He got several comments from the audience, "Okay. I am up here to introduce our speaker for the night." This also got several comments from the audience. "Mr. Gordon is Taylor's lawyer," Kirk said real fast and ran off the stage.
Gordon walked up to the podium and cleared his throat. When he had everyone's attention, he started.
"My name is Aston Gordon. I am, was Taylor Dorsey's lawyer. I am also the executor of his Will. I will not read this Will word for word, but I will tell you what it says and answer any questions." He proceeded to read the list of items that belonged to Taylor Dorsey and to whom he bequests. Kirk got his sweater vest, Ms. Patty got his bow ties, and so forth.
This went on for about 45 minutes. Rory was getting bored. She was looking around the round. Several times Mr. Gordon had to stop because of the bickering between townspeople and the items they were receiving. Rory thought he could have just sent everyone a list. Then Mr. Gordon said something that got her attention.
"I have a couple more big items on this list. Taylor wanted to talk with you first before I read this list." Everyone was watching Gordon. How was Taylor going to talk with them? Rory realized Taylor made a DVD for them to watch after he was gone. Rory had to put her hand over her mouth and lean into Logan to keep from laughing. Taylor Dorsey was going to haunt them from the grave. Her mother would have gotten a kick out of this.
The DVD began, with Taylor welcoming everyone to the reading of his Will. He then explained to everyone that he was dead. Taylor talked about the love he had for this town. He talked about how the town had begun to fade after the death of two of its well-loved citizens. He then explained that he was not going to let this town die. He then began to read a list of properties that he owned. Some are rental houses, some are buildings, such as Ms. Patty's studio, the building the Stars Hollow Gazette was run out of. There were several more. Rory stopped paying attention. She had to pee. She was just about to ask Jesse for the key, so she could go back to the diner to use the restroom when she heard her name. Her full name. Lorelai 'Rory'Leigh Gilmore Huntzburber. This stopped her in her tracks. She turned around. Everyone was looking at her. There were so many different expressions on their faces. She turned to Logan.
"What did he say? I missed it. All I heard was my name." Rory whispered to Logan. Taylor was still taking on the big screen, but no one could hear him, everyone started talking at once. Mr. Gordon paused Taylor in mid-sentence.
"I need everyone to calm down. Taylor is not finished." Before he could say anything else, Rory stood up. This caused the crowd to all hush.
"I didn't hear what he said. All I heard was my name, Can you rewind him?" Rory asked. There were mumbles heard throughout the crowd. Logan was sure he heard someone say 'if only they could have done that in real life.' This caused the crowd to laugh.
Mr. Gordon was sitting the DVR back to before Taylor said Rory's name. When everyone got quiet again he started it back. Taylor again was listing all the properties he owns. When he finished the list Taylor said.
"I leave all to Lorelai Rory Leigh Gilmore Huntzbuger. I know that she will make sure this town never dies."
