Chapter 23
Finn POV
The next morning, Rory and I packed up the car. We stopped at Luke's for a quick breakfast before heading back to Hartford. Logan had texted her with his arrival time so that Colin and I could pick him up. I dropped her off at her office where she was meeting Steph. They were going to get everything in order to take over to the hospital.
After leaving Rory at her office, I headed to Colin's to pick him up and we went to get a bite to eat before picking Logan up. We had just ordered when I noticed that Colin was staring at me. "What?" I asked.
"How are things with you and Ror?" He asked me.
"There good. Everything seems to be back on track. Fortunately I hadn't unpacked anything in New York so it made it easier to move to Hartford. We got my stuff moved in and the transfer of the corporate offices is going smoothly. Why?" I said.
"I was just curious. You guys seem like you've fallen into a nice routine. Well at least that's what Steph tells me." He said.
I nodded. "We have. Her grandparents aren't happy about us living together and not being married but Ror made it clear to them that her personal life is not up for debate." I told him.
"Good for her. Have you guys talked about the future?" He asked.
"Meaning?" I replied.
"Marriage, kids…"
"Colin."
"What? It's the most logical step. You both seem to be situated in your careers. Hell, my father wished my career was as good as Ror's. He keeps asking me if I'm sure that I want to marry Steph. Hell, he said he'd kill to have that kind of lawyer in the family. Not that I'd ever say any of it to Steph."
"Of course not. She's pretty kick ass. I watched her on the phone last night when she was talking to Juliet. It's amazing." I said as our food arrived. "Listen on a side note, she mentioned to her mom last night that you're her lawyer." I said and Colin nodded. "Has she ever mentioned to you her thoughts on Pre-nup's." I said causing him to drop his fork.
"Why?" He asked.
"I'm just trying to figure out how best to talk to her about it." I said.
"Well… we talked about it a few months ago actually. She said that she's not particularly fond of them but because of businesses on both sides and the amount of money that's involved she understands why the families would insist upon it." Colin said. I nodded. "She's opening up a new firm." Colin told me. "My father wants me to take over the New York office so Steph and I talked to Ror about it and she agreed to put up the funds for an office in New York and that Steph would run it." He told me.
I nodded. That sounded like Rory. We finished eating. I looked at the time. "We should get going." I said and he nodded.
Rory POV
After gathering up the files that I needed to take with us to the hospital, Steph and I swung by my condo so that I could change. Then we headed to the hospital. We walked into the waiting room to wait for the guys. I found Honor and Shira waiting. "Honor." I said.
Honor looked up and saw me. She walked over. "Rory." She said hugging me. "Logan called a few minutes ago. He's just landed. He was grabbing his bag, then he was going to change and head straight here." She said.
I nodded. "She knows that she's going to have to stay calm right?" I said, gesturing to her mother.
Honor nodded. "Yes, she knows. Once she finds out what's going on than Josh is taking her to the spa." Honor said.
I rolled my eyes. "Okay, so just a heads up. It's going to get crazy in a little bit. Juliet is on her way. Once we get an update then we'll meet with the press. I'm going to need you to stand with Logan during the press conference so that we show a united front." I told her.
"Of course." Honor said.
I heard the clicking of heels and when I looked to my left I saw Juliet approaching us. "Okay, I just spoke to the guys. They'll be here any minute. Do we have an update yet?" She asked.
Honor shook her head. "We won't. Logan has medical power of attorney over both Mitchum and Shira. They have to wait until Logan gets here." I said. They both nodded.
As soon as the boys arrived, Logan quickly got to work on getting information about his dad.
After a couple of hours, we found out that Mitchum had to have surgery. Come to find out he'd had an underlying heart condition that no one had been aware of. While we were waiting for them to come and prep him for surgery, we got all necessary documents signed. Logan handled the hospital paperwork while I worked with Mitchum to sign over everything relating to HPG and the Huntzberger family. "Mitchum…" I said sympathetically. He looked up at me. "Where is your will?" I asked and his face fell. "You know, just in case."
He nodded. "It's in my safe at the office. Logan knows the combination." He said. I nodded.
Once they'd taken Mitchum into surgery, Honor's husband Josh left with Shira to go and drop her off at a spa. Juliet approached me. "It's time." Juliet said. I nodded.
"Honor go with Juliet. Logan and I will join you in a minute." She nodded and they walked off. I turned to Logan. "Are you okay?" I asked him. He shrugged. "Okay so Juliet is going to welcome the press and then she's going to introduce me. You and Honor will stand beside me. Do you want to speak?" I asked him.
He shook his head. "No, I'll let you and Juliet handle it. I mean I pay you enough, right?" He said with a small smile.
"Alright let's go." I said. We walked to the front of the hospital where a podium had been placed. I nodded to Juliet. Honor came to stand beside Logan.
"Welcome. I want to thank you all for coming on such short notice. On behalf of the Huntzberger family I would like to assure you that everything is being taken care of and the family would like for you to respect their privacy at this time. Here to represent the family, is their attorney, Ms. Lorelai Hayden." Juliet said, stepping to the side.
Honor, Logan and I approached the podium. They stood beside me. "On behalf of the Huntzberger family, I would like inform you of the current status of Mitchum Huntzberger. Around 9 pm last night, Mr. Huntzberger suffered a heart attack in the privacy of his home that he shares with his wife. An hour ago, he was wheeled into surgery. At this time that is all of the information that I have available. As to the status of his company, his son Logan will be stepping into the role that he has been preparing for since college. The family requests that you respect their privacy. If you need a further statement, you are more than welcome to contact my office…Hayden Law in Hartford." I said. "Thank you all for coming." I said before I turned and led Logan and Honor back into the hospital.
Honor headed back to the waiting room. Logan turned and looked at me. "Thanks for handling that." He said.
"It's what I do." I said giving him a small smile. "I need to get this paperwork back to the office. But I have my phone and if you need anything you can call me or Finn, okay?"
"Thanks Ror." He said.
Finn POV
Colin and I had stood off to the side and watched Rory and Juliet do their thing. I was in awe of her. It was truly the first time that I'd been able to see her do what she does. "Incredible isn't it?" Colin asked me.
"She's amazing." I said.
"You should see her in the court room." Colin said.
That night Rory and I were laying in bed, Logan was crashing in the guest room. "Did you mean what you said to your mom about New Year's?" I asked her.
She looked up at me. "What? You mean about taking a trip?" She asked and I nodded. "Yeah. Ever since I started at the firm I haven't been able to spend much time with her. I think she's feeling neglected. Why?"
I pulled her closer to me. "Well I was thinking, what if we grabbed everyone that wanted to go, hopped on a plane and went to the Bahamas." I said.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah. Why not? I mean we've done New York for New Year's why not something tropical." I said.
"You know what? That actually sounds like a really good idea." She said leaning up and kissing me. "Mom's gonna love it."
