She Ain't My Blood, But She's My Girl

Chapter 12

Saturday morning Logan woke before Rory or Mia. They were staying in the pool house at Emily's. He slipped on a shirt and went to the kitchen. After getting Himself a cup of coffee, he sat down with his laptop. He needed to do some research. The smell of coffee woke Rory. She walked past him at the table, going straight to the coffee pot. After her first sip, she refilled her cup. Logan was watching.

Rory sat down next to Logan. "What are you doing?" She asked. "I am doing some research. Has Tristan or Nancy given you any reason for all of a sudden wanting to see Mia?" Logan asked. "No, but I think I know why." She said. Logan closed the laptop. "Out of sight, Out of mind. Grandma said that she has not seen Nancy at the club or any DAR meeting in over a year. I think Tristan and Anita announced her pregnancy and Jaylan went crazy. When we told the Dugrays I was pregnant they were excited to be grandparents. Jaylan was disappointed when he found out that Tristan was not going to quiet the Marine to come work for him. Things calmed down some right before I left for Germany. I stayed with them often before I left. All Jaylan would talk about was finally getting an heir to take over the business. We laughed at him. I was already in Germany when we found out Mia was a girl. The phone calls came less often. When Nancy would call, it was never when Jaylan was around. After I had the baby, Nancy called several times, but mom talked to her. I didn't. When Tristan came home she called and he talked to her. This happened twice, that I can remember. Tristan would always be in a mood when he got off the phone with her." Rory had cuddled up to Logan while she told the story.

"I thought about what you said about Tristan knowing my background with my Dad and the fact that he had no control over when or where he would be going. I think I understand his reasoning behind the divorce. I think that Jaylan said something about already having a baby that he didn't know. He was again, I am sure, trying to get Tristan to leave the military. I think Tristan put in for a transfer to the east coast so he and Anita can raise their family. But what about Mia. So, I am guessing he wants to get to know her so that she will be a part of his family." Logan held her tight. "I think you may be right. What do we do about it?" Logan asked. "Right now, I still have control. I don't know how long that will last."

They heard Mia stirring in the other room. She came walking in rubbing her eyes. She crawled up in Logan's lap and laid her head on his chest. She was sucking her thumb, something Rory had tried to break but had failed. Rory got up and fixed Mia a bowl of cereal. After she finished eating, Rory took her to the bedroom to get her dressed for her visit with Nancy.

Logan and Rory walked Mia over to the main house. Emily and Richard were both at the dining room table eating and reading the paper. Mia had her coloring books. As the adults sat there talking, Mia was coloring. "I making a picture for your office Grandpa," Mia said. He praised her wonderful coloring. She looked at Emily. "Grandma, do you have a work to hang my picture at?" Rory and Logan both looked at Emily. She smiled at Mia. "I work here at home, so yes you can color me a picture."

It wasn't long before the doorbell rang. Mia jumped. "Hey, did that scare you?" Logan asked, putting his hand on her shoulder. Mia nodded. "It was just the doorbell," Logan told her. When she heard Nancy speak leaned in on Logan. "It's okay, she's just going to visit for a while. She wants to get to know you." Mia looked at Logan. "You already know me." "Yes, but Ms. Nancy wants to get to know you too." "She wants me to call her Nana. I got a Nana. I not need anymore." "What if you come up with another name?" "What name?" Rory was in the foyer with Emily talking to Nancy at this time.

"Nancy, can we go in the living room. I want to talk with you while Mia finishes up coloring." Rory said. Emily and Nancy followed her into the living room. After everyone was seated. "Why the interest now?" Rory asked Nancy. "I could pre emblem the question and step softly, but it all comes down to why now? Nancy, I need the truth. Nancy sat there with her hands in her lap. She looked from Emily to Rory. Tears developed in her eyes. "Jaylan doesn't want anyone to know. He has cancer." Now the tears are flowing. Emily reached out and took her hand. "I am so sorry Nancy." "I'm sorry Nancy, but what has that got to do with Mia. You are here visiting, not him. Does he want to get to know her?" Rory asked. "I'm sorry Grandma, but this doesn't make sense. If Jaylan is dying of cancer, shouldn't he be the one here getting to know Mia?" Rory asked. "He is a proud man. He wants to get to know her. But he wants to do it on his terms. I have always wanted to get to know her, but Tristian told me he preferred I didn't. That all it was going to do was hurt Mia. That he chose to let the two of you go because his job would only cause trouble." Nancy said. "So why now?" "Jaylan told him that he needed to man up. He told him he already had one child and another on the way. It was time for him to step up." Nancy was looking at the floor with her hands tightly in her lap. "So Tristan still wants to distance himself from Mia?" Emily asked. "No, Not at all." She said, "The reason Tristan is going to Washington, he is resigning his commission. He will take over for Jaylan."

Rory was sitting there, trying to process what she just heard when Logan walked in. "Hey, Mia is coloring with Richard, but she is getting antsy." "Tell her to come into the living room. Nancy is here to see her." Rory said. Logan turned around to leave but stopped. "Just a heads up. She says she has a nana. I told her to come up with something else to call you. She has come up with some goodies." Logan said.

MIa and Nancy put puzzles together. Nancy read to Mia, Mia read to Nancy. Mia came up with a name for Nancy. She is going to call her Yaya. Mia explained that she had a friend that calls her grandma YaYa. Nancy asked Mia if her friend was Greek. Mia told her no, she was Sara.

Mia was able to enjoy the morning with Yaya. Mia didn't want Rory or Logan to leave, so they stayed in the pool house. She and Nancy would walk over to the pool house to make sure they were not gone.

Nancy left before lunch was served. She told Mia that she enjoyed spending time with her, that maybe Daddy Logan and Momma could bring her to spend time at her house.

After Nancy left, Logan, Rory, and Mia piled in the rental car and headed to Stars Hollow.
