It won't be like this for long: Chapter 11
Chapter 11
After the game, they won, everyone was back at the house getting ready for their guests to arrive. Logan and Rory were upstairs getting dressed. Rory was wearing a pair of rag & bone Miramare Cotton Joggers and a concert tee, paired with Jayden Studded Suede Clogs by Loeffler Randall.
She had just added her diamond earrings when Logan entered the closet. He pulled out a pair of black Tom Ford slacks and a white button-down shirt. Rory looked at him and shook her head. They have this same conversation every time they go dress casual. Logan's idea of causal is his Tom Ford dress pants.
"Hey Ace, I've been thinking," Logan started. "I know that the kids are too old for a nanny, but you could use an assistant." Logan waited to see if Rory would say anything. He knew that even after all these years, she was still reluctant to have hired help, Even if she had the money. She hasn't said anything. He turns around to look at her.
"That may not be a bad idea. Will she work out of our office here at home?" Rory asked.
"Well, that is the other thing I want to discuss with you," Logan said. She raised her eyebrows as if she was intrigued. "I want to set you up in an office at HPG….Before you say anything, You are going to be in charge, overseeing, whatever you want to call it, two new projects…" He looked to see if she was still listening.
"You will need a place for meetings. You can work out of my old office. We can set up your assistant in front of your door. You can write in there, as well as handle the business of Stars Hollow, the Dragonfly, and Peaches and Cream." Logan could see that she was very interested in this. "And the cherry on top…..you get to see me all day." Rory and Logan both laughed.
"How about I come to your office Monday. Check out the space. Who knows, there may already be someone on staff with HPG that I would like to be my assistant." Rory said with a grin.
"NO, not MaryBeth, You can not have her," Logan said.
They heard the doorbell and knew it was time to get started.
When they got downstairs Ryan and Mia were in the family room. A college football game was on in the background. Logan walked to the drink cart to fix him a drink, then thought better of it. Jess is more of a beer man. He will drink beer tonight.
"Ace, going to grab a beer, you want me to open a glass of wine?" Logan asked.
"No, I ordered some wine coolers. I thought having a BBQ beer and wine coolers would be great. That way I still have my wits about me when we talk business." Rory told him as she turned to go answer the door.
While she was answering the door, Mia and Ryan went to go get a bottle of coke from the basement and let the twins know the guests had arrived.
When the kids got back upstairs, everyone was on the patio. The temperature was not too bad, Logan set up a couple of heaters around the patio. Mia introduced Ryan to everyone. When she got to Uncle Jess, he stood up. Jess was a lot more mature since taking over the Diner, but he still had that rough edge about him, or at least he tried to act as if he did.
"Hon, be nice," Hanna said. Taking his hand. "We are happy to meet you, Ryan. I am guessing you and Mia go to school together?" Hanna said as she held onto Jess's hand. April was grinning.
"I remember the first time I introduced a boy to Jess. Well, Dad was there too but he had already met him. It's funny, I can remember the scene and what everyone said, but can not for the life of me remember the boy's name." April said. Laughing.
"You were too young to bring boys around to the diner," Jess mumbled and sat back down. He was smiling. He too remembered that moment. Things just seemed so much simpler back then, when Luke and Lorelai were still around.
They talked about Luke and Lorelai for a little while. They liked talking about them in a group. Remembering all the good times. It was times like this that Rory felt close to her mom. This kind of sharing did not make her sad anymore.
After eating supper, April and Rory went to their home office. Rory had Collin draw up paperwork where Rory and Logan bought the boutique, debt and all. This will give April a nice little nest egg. Rory and Logan will turn around and sell the merchandise to Honor for one of her stores.
April looked over the contract. Attached to it was a check made out to April. April agreed to sign the contract after she had a lawyer look over it. Rory asked if she was comfortable with Chris looking over it. April agreed.
Rory called Chris. She asked him if he would look over a contract for April. He agreed. April will stop by his house tomorrow before she goes to the airport.
When April and Rory were finished with the business part of the evening, they rejoined the rest in the family room. They were discussing Taylor. Jess was saying that Dorsey's has been closed for a week and everyone was asking him when Rory was going to open back up.
"Tell them that Dorsey's will be open Monday morning at the same time as usual," Rory said. Logan looked at her.
"Ace, I love you but you have a lot going on Monday. Do you have a plan?" Logan asked. Rory sat there thinking.
"No, not yet, but I will by the time it opens on Monday." She grabbed a notepad out of the side table in the family room. "Jess, who worked in the store besides Taylor. First, give me the names of the store, then the Ice Cream Shoppe.
Jess, Hanna, and Rory talked about the employees of the two businesses they were discussing tonight. Rory will call and talk with them tomorrow. Choose a manager and go from there. She has already talked with the high school journalism sponsor. She and Logan discussed it earlier. She is going to have a teacher from Stars Hollow High School help supervise student writers for the Stars Hollow Gazette. She talked with the dean at Yale. She is interviewing members of the Yale Daily News to see if any of them had the potential to run the Stars Hollow Gazette. If so, she is going to offer them an internship. Her goal is to go digital by the middle of next year. Of course, there would still be a paper to print. Logan was going to ask someone from the Harford Herald, HPG owned paper, to be the editor-in-chief of the Stars Hollow Gazette. He had his eye on this employee for a while. He was ready for bigger things.
Rory told them that she will call Lane tonight. Get her to set up a town meeting for Wednesday, so Rory could explain what she will be doing. She knew that some of the townsfolk thought she would be moving back. She will help maintain the level of crazy in Stars Hollow. This is the town that raised her, but she would not be their Selectman nor will she move back to Stars Hollow.
