It won't be like this for long: Chapter 13
Chapter 13
When they parked the car and entered the house, there was no one to be found. They could hear noise from the basement. Logan headed to the basement while Rory went upstairs. He stood at the top of the stairs and watched his dad and his 10-year-old son play Mario Kart. Where was this dad when Logan was a kid? Too busy making money. Logan shook his head.
"Hey Pops, don't let Hayden beat you. You will never hear the end of it. He beat me two weeks ago. He is still calling me a loser." Logan said as he descended the stairs. When he got to the bottom he saw McKenzie sitting, well maybe you would call it laying, in her hang-a-round chair reading a book while watching Disney plus on her tablet.
He walked over to her and blew a raspberry on the stomach where her shirt had fallen while being upside down. She swatted at Logan and laughed. Rory was coming down the stairs.
"McKenzie, all the blood and going to rush out of your head," Rory told her.
"Nay, I sit up every 10 minutes," McKenzie told them. Rory and Logan were laughing.
"Told Pops not to let Hayden win. He would never hear the end of it." Logan told Rory. She was looking around the room.
"Where is Mia?" she asked.
"She went to the mall with Ryan," Hayden told them, never moving his eyes off the screen.
"Ha, got you Pops, I win," Hayden said, jumping up and dancing around Mitchum. Everyone was laughing.
"Logan, did you play games like this when you were Hayden's age?" Mitchum asked. Logan nodded his head.
"Maybe if I had played with you, I could beat my grandson." Mitchum put the controller down on the sofa and stood up. "Well, Since you are back, I guess I can go home, or maybe I will go play golf," He said, taking his phone out of his pants pocket, looking for a number to call his golf buddies.
"Dad, you just came over to play a video game with Hayden?" Logan asked. Rory elbowed him in the ribs.
"No, son, I was headed to the golf course and Mia called. She wanted me to come to stay with the twins. She and that boy were going to the mall and then to eat with his parents…." Mitchum looked at Logan with a smug look on his face. "Do you mean to tell me she didn't ask you first?" Mitchum said, then started laughing as he headed up the stairs. "McKenzie, I enjoyed painting with you today. Next time we will work on a masterpiece for my bedroom….Hayden, I am going to buy myself one of these games. I will need you to help me set it up. Then I will practice until I can beat you." Mitchum told his grandchildren.
He was at the top of the stairs. "I will see you later. Rory, have a great Sunday. Believe me when I tell you I am sorry, but you are just an innocent bystander. Logan. Karma." Mitchum left the room laughing, you could still hear him laughing right before the front door shut.
Rory and Logan both flopped down on the sofa. Rory pulled out her phone and texted Mia. 'We expect you home by curfew. A little earlier will go a long way.' Rory laid her cell phone down on the sofa.
"Want to play a game of Mario Kart?" Rory asked Logan.
"Sure," They both jumped up to grab the prized controller.
They spend the rest of the day enjoying the company of the twins. Mia made it home before curfew. Rory and Logan decided to address Mia's action tomorrow. They just wanted to enjoy their children tonight.
The next morning, as the kids were leaving for school, Mia was almost out the door when Logan stopped her.
"Mia, drop the twins off here after school and come to his office."
Mia stopped in her tracts as she was closing the door. Her parents didn't say anything about her calling Mitchum to come to babysit yesterday, she thought she was off the hook. She should have known better.
"Yes Sir," she told him.
When Rory came back downstairs, the kids were already gone.
"Did you tell Mia to drop the kids off and come to your office?" Rory asked. Logan just rolled his eyes.
"You act like you don't know how to discipline," Logan said. It was Rory's turn to roll her eyes.
"Oh, You know how to discipline. You know how to put your foot down, to tell me what to tell them." Rory said. Looked lifted an eyebrow. "Yeah, I know your tricks, Momma will be the bad guy. Tell them what their punishment is, although we both agreed on it. Most of the time it was your idea." Rory told him, standing with her arms crossed.
"Well, don't look so innocent. You went back upstairs so I would have to be the one to tell her to come by the office." Logan said. Rory smiles.
"And you will be the one to tell her that starting today, she will be working at HPG after school."
Logan got to the office before Rory. She stopped by Starbucks. When she parked in the underground garage, she picked up the box of files in her passenger seat. She would send someone down to get the rest.
She got off the elevator on the executive floor. Logan had opened the office door. Looks like he had a cleaning crew in there. She could see someone vacuuming in her new office. She would get a decorator down here. If she remembered, this office was awful when Logan worked here in college.
When she got to Marybeth's desk she stopped and put her box in the chair beside her desk.
"I guess Logan told you about my new adventure?" Rory asked Marybeth. She smiled
"Yes, and he told me to be sure to tell you No," Marybeth said laughing.
"Well, I think I am going to need your help to find the right person so that I can leave you along with my husband," Rory told her. Marybeth picked up a folder laying on the corner of her desk.
"This folder is copies of resumes' that are already employed by HPG that I think will be a good fit for you. This folder," She said, handing another folder to Rory. "Contains resumes' that recently came into HR that I have looked over. Let me know when you are ready to set up interviews." Marybeth told Rory.
"He called you last night, didn't he?" Rory asked. Marybeth shook her head. "You are good, but you are not this good. He only beat me to the office by 6 or 7 minutes." Rory told her. Marybeth smiled.
"He told me before he left Friday." She told Rory. They both laughed. Marybeth then told her, "you have an appointment with a decorator in about 30 minutes."
"What? How did you pull that off? I expected it to be at least a week. Does HPG employ a decorator or designer?" Rory asked. Marybeth just smiled.
