"I... I have something to tell you..." she said putting a space between them and drew her glance anywhere but towards him.
What is going on?
"Ace, what is it? You know you can tell me anything," Logan assured her although his heart started to beat very fast as his mind trying to predict what she was trying to say.
"I don't know how to say this," she sighed. "Maybe I'll just show you?"
What?
Logan nodded weakly.
Rory stood up from the bed and went to her bag on the kitchen table. She was back faced him so he couldn't see her face, which made him more anxious. She reached her bag, rummaged into it, and looked like found what she was looking for, but she took some time and some very sharp breaths before she turned to face him again.
"I peed on a stick," she said, handing a bag of sticks. "Well, not just one, it was like a bag of sticks to be precise... maybe five or six to be sure, because you know. The probability and all, and... God, I'm rambling..."
Logan stared at the bag, his heart was drumming like crazy he lost Rory's rambles. Are those what he thought those were? She wouldn't be showing these to him unless...
"Can you say something, please?"
He shook his head to free himself from the frozen state but even then, he couldn't voiced anything. He tried clearing his throat. "Ace," his voice sounded hoarse. "I, uh... are those?" Dang it, what happened to calm and collected Logan?
She nodded.
"And they are..."
She nodded again.
"How? When?" What was wrong with his ability to form a complete sentence?
"Um, I'm guessing around Christmas or San Fransisco, I'm not really sure... and you really need to ask about the how?" She asked incredulously, nervously.
"No, not the how we uh, we did it. But how did you know? When did you took the tests?"
"This morning. I missed my period last month, and this month wasn't showing any signs of coming too. And I had been feeling queasy and cranky and bloated. But I didn't put much thought into it because you know, the low probability. The night of the rehearsal, I almost puked at the taste of the champagne, so I actually didn't drink the champagne I was constantly toasting with and Jess' mom was actually the one who noticed, and she advised me to take a test. So on the way to the house I bought some tests, but forgotten to take it because Lewis happened,"
Rory's detailed explanation allowed the news to seep into his brain, this was real? All these time he was dreaming about them starting a family, even imagining their kids here and there, but he always had thought of them in some vague faraway future since up until last night they hadn't even agreed to be married yet. And there was that probability issue that made them never thought a pregnancy would occur without help of a fertility expert.
"This morning when I was getting ready, I found the tests in my bag. So I took them, and voila!" She added with a nervous smile.
His smile grew wider as the reality started to form inside his head. This was real! Rory's pregnant!
"That's why you were so long in the bathroom," he chimed in.
"Yes, and I wanted to tell you straight away but Honor was there, and then on our way here I was just trying to wrap my head around the idea. I don't want to get my hopes up, and yours too. I thought about waiting to tell you until I have a confirmation from the doctor at least, but I realized I won't be able to keep this from you, not that I want to anyway,"
While she was talking, Logan had made his way to her and was now standing in front of her and placing his hands on her waist. "I'm glad you told me, Ace..." he kissed her with all his heart all the while cupping his hand on her flat belly. "Holy crap, Ace! How could I be so lucky?"
"Yeah, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I really think we should postpone celebration until we see a doctor. At least to confirm that it truly exists. And you know how many coffee I had..."
There was nothing she could ever said that can make him less joyful today, but he acknowledged her concern anyway.
"You had coffee this morning? And at Yale?"
"No, I mean before last month before I knew I was pregnant. This morning I only had a few sips, you must be too used in seeing me with coffee you barely noticed I didn't drink most of my coffee...and at Yale, I didn't drink my coffee. I threw it away as much as it pains me,"
"Okay. Well, like you said. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, and just wait until we talked to a doctor, right?"
But not even the Hoover Dam could hold his excitement or the flying feeling he was having.
"Yes."
"Do you have an appointment yet?"
"Nope. I just found out this morning, silly... and I haven't been sitting around all day, have I?"
"Okay okay, so we'll make an appointment. I will make an appointment. I will take care of you, Ace. Not that you need me to, you can take care of yourself. But when I'm around, you don't have to worry about anything else," he pledged. "And I'm not just saying this because you're carrying my child, I mean it... child, or children will come and they will go creating their own lives. But I will stay, it will be me and you all the time. And I will take good care of you all the time,"
"I know, Logan. You always have been, even if you didn't realize it. You told me once to look at myself through your eyes, now I ask you to look at yourself through my eyes. I see this incredibly patient man, who shows his love and care for me in beautiful ways every day. Who's not afraid to argue with me and set me straight when I go wrong, but not afraid to admit when he's wrong either. I see this brilliant man, with a sharp business instinct and knowledge of an encyclopedia. And yet still save some place in your brain to care about humans... see that guy every-time you look in the mirror," she ordered.
"Yes, dear..." he said smiling, placing a kiss on her forehead and stayed there a while.
"This is such a perfect moment, Logan... I am so happy. I have everything I ever wished for and more,"
"Me too, Ace. Me too..." his lips found hers and instantly brought them into a passionate dance full of love and lust.
They made love again in a very sweet and endearing way. Logan was very gentle and full of emotions, he really did treat her like a princess.
"Logan, thank you for being gentle with me just now," Rory said with an eye half closed.
"Of course,"
"But next time, if you ever take that slow again, I gonna kick you out of my bed and just do the business myself,"
Logan chuckled. "Okay, Ace. Go to sleep! I'm going to see if we can get an appointment with a doctor soon,"
"Mmkaaay..." she mumbled.
He went on a mission to find a doctor as soon as she fell asleep and was so excited when he found one nearby that will have them, he almost wake her up.
He busied himself with replying messages rather than returning phone calls because he didn't want to disturb her seemingly peaceful nap. Apparently their news had reached more people that he'd imagine. Honor really had a big mouth, but he didn't mind. They already knew his plan of proposing because he couldn't stop himself. Although he'd wished that they had a chance to tell Lorelai and Chris and his parents themselves.
Maybe they'll stop by on the way home, and let them know in person. They still have a nice little surprise, maybe they can tell it along. Imagine the excitement. Logan grinned.
At a quarter to four, Logan couldn't help himself to wake Rory up anymore. Their appointment is at four thirty. He didn't want to miss this first appointment. But it didn't took a lot of effort because as soon as Rory heard the word doctor, she practically jumped out of the bed.
The doctor was a very nice man named Ashriv Kapoor. On his excitement, Logan didn't even bother to find out more about the doctor and if he was a man. And now, with him telling Rory to take off her pants and about to insert a stick into her, he suddenly felt not as his usual gender indifference towards services or professional assistance. He made a mental note to include this in his search for a doctor near their house in Hartford, added into the already long list of background education of a minimum of Ivy League schools, more than ten years of experience, having a certification of more than three antenatal and prenatal courses, among others.
While Logan was busy making schedules and preparations in his head, the doctor had detected the baby and was informing Rory that he was going to put on the speaker. Suddenly Logan could hear a thumping sound from the computer, like a frog jumping in a bowl of jelly.
"What's that?" He narrowed his eyes on the screen.
"That, Mr. and Mrs, Huntzberger, is your baby's heartbeat," dr. Kapoor announced. He must be joking, right? He felt Rory's hand creeping into his, looking for comfort by squeezing it. She didn't even protest that Logan made the appointment under the name Mr. and Mrs. Huntzberger.
"Looks like you are already close to nine weeks, Mrs. Huntzberger... congratulations! Your baby is healthy, see here... this is your baby," he pointed at a blob on the screen. "It's sitting comfortably in your womb. This is your amniotic fluid, such a proper amount. Your baby is also in a correct size for its age. We will need a full blood check to know for sure about your health, but so far as I can see, everything is good..."
Logan couldn't even hear half of the things the doctor said. His eyes transfixed on the screen where his baby sitting comfortably, to quote the doc. His baby. His and Rory's. A living baby, with a correct size for its age. The size of a bean. And a heartbeat like a drum in a sport event.
He felt his eyes wet as he brought his other hand to her belly. "Bean," he whispered. He looked at Rory who was still staring at the blob with amazement and he brought her hand to kiss it.
"Ehm," the doctor interrupted. "I will print the USG picture and send you a copy of the video by email... don't worry," he said smiling knowingly.
"That would be great, thank you..." he said.
They spent another fifteen minutes discussing about the pregnancy with the doctor, and Logan asked him the things that Rory want to know but too afraid to ask. The doctor assured them that all is good, the abdomen trauma happened a decade ago. Rory's body must have found a way to heal itself. They can do a full work up again once they found their nearer doctor.
They left the doctor's office with a matching grin. It was like life turned upside down for him this last past year, in a good way. In a fantastic way. It was amazing how he found his happiness relies on such immaterial things.
"This is the best day of my life," Rory said.
"You beat me to it, Ace!"
"Let's celebrate, Logan!"
"Where?"
"I don't know. Rich man shoe? Call the boys, they probably are still around here. I'm too excited for just the both of us,"
"You will never be too excited for me. But whatever you want, you get..." he obliged, sending texts to his friends.
"Oh, you are so gonna regret that sentence when I send you looking for strawberry matcha almond ice cream on top of a chocolate pancake at two AM for the fifth night in a row," she teased.
"I'll hire you a chef, Ace!"
"How convenient."
Logan chuckled and kissed her hand for the zillionth times today. He was walking on clouds and he could tell Rory was too seeing her grinning from ear to ear. He could understand that she needed to see people to let out all the euphoria.
He parked the car on the sideways in front of Rich Man's Shoe. Gosh this place hasn't changed at all. He remembered hearing something about transfer of ownership regretted didn't hear it sooner, because he would love to own it just to keep it from changing. Most of his best days were spent in this place, especially his memories with Rory, although not all good if you remember the 'break up'. But apparently the new owner didn't change the place at all. Nice.
"Honor didn't pick up my call. I'll just send her a text." Rory said from his side.
"Okay, Finn wasn't picking up too but texted me back with an OK. Colin was, wait! That's Colin!" He pointed the car pulling in front of them.
They both made their way out of the car to catch Colin.
"Gah! You scared me!" Colin jumped when Logan caught up with him and tapped his back. He was carrying a box full of Christmas lights.
"Sorry! Sorry. I tried to call you,"
"Well, yeah. I was driving,"
"Since when it stopped you from taking calls?"
"Since your sister and my girlfriend united and waiting for me to come with this box. I had to concentrate if I wanted to break the record of bolting through as many red lights as I can," he grunted, adjusting the box. "Keep on walking!" He instructed.
"Okay, but what's the occasion?" Logan asked confused, trying to keep up with his friend while keeping Rory close.
"Oh!" Colin stopped abruptly. "Oh God! Now they're definitely gonna kill me,"
"It's for our surprise engagement party, Logan." Rory answered from behind.
"What she said." Colin confirmed. "How did you know?"
"Ah, come on. I'm a journalist, and it wasn't hard. Tell you what, we'll save your ass. We'll just go drink coffee at the coffee shop there to buy you some time. You can tell them to hurry up, and we'll arrive acting all surprised, how's that sound?" Rory offered.
Colin's eyes went bright. "Did I tell you I love you?"
"Occasionally. Mostly when drunk." She smiled.
"Well, I'm sober a little now, and I love you, Rory. Welcome to the family," Colin pecked her cheek and quickly made his way to the cafe.
"Nothing gets past you, Ace." Logan commented laughing. He knew that his boys loved Rory a lot and he was proud at her. Not many girls can capture the hearts of the biggest playboys in campus. They didn't love her in the same sense as Logan's, and that's what made it unique and special.
As promised, they stayed in the coffee shop for more than half an hour before headed to the Rich Man's Shoe.
"Ready?" Logan asked Rory in front of the door. She nodded, and he opened the door to a shower of confetti and a chorus,
"SURPRISE!!!"
