She Ain't My Blood, But She's My Girl
Chapter 18
Rory and Logan were getting ready for the HPG Christmas Gala. Because Logan is CEO he and Rory are expected to present. The Gala is being held at The Morgan in downtown Manhattan. The ballroom was one of the biggest in New York. Rory and Logan were already in the penthouse at the Morgan. They were staying the night. Mia and Kimmy are with them. Mia will stay at the Gala until the meal is served. Then she and Kimmy will go to the penthouse to eat and have a movie night. Logan was ready. He was waiting on Rory and Mia. Kimmy was invited but declined. She will just wait until Mia arrives back at the penthouse.
Mia exited the bedroom first. "Finally," Logan said. "Daddy Logan. You need to watch me walk and clap for me," Mia said. Logan chucked. Mia walked to the door with her hand on her hip, turned around, and walked back. Logan clapped for her. She was wearing a Red Girl's Silk Crepe Studded Gathered Dress by Chloe. White leggings with black Caitin Scalloped Leather Mary Jane by L'Amour Shoes. Logan was smiling and clapping.
Rory was standing at the door watching. "Your turn Momma," Mia said. Rory walked the same path Mia did. She put a little swing in her hip, which was driving him crazy. She is wearing a red Crystal-Embroidered Halter Fishtail Column Gown with Pigalle Follies Leather 100mm Red Sole Pumps, Black by Christian Louboutin. She stopped in front of Logan. "I'm ready to go. I see you are too," Rory said in a low voice. Mia was at the door waiting. "Come on you guys, I got to get my dance on. Daddy Logan, you dance with me, then you dance with momma." Mia instructed.
When they got off the elevator, Rory reminded Mia to stay close to her or Logan. "This is a big place and it will get crowded quickly. Stay close." Rory told her. When they got off the elevator, they exited out the side door and walked around to the front of the hotel. Logan as CEO was expected to be photographed on the red carpet. When they got around to the front, Mitchum and Shira were just getting out of the limo. The limo had actually picked them up at the side door, but Shira wanted a big entrance. She was excited to see Logan and his family. They could walk in together. The sidewalk was getting crowded and Mia was hanging onto Logan's leg. He picked her up. After all the greetings with Mitchum and Shira, they started down the red carpet. It was about 75 yards long. Logan put Mia down at the beginning of the red carpet. He had one hand on the small of Rory's back and Mia had the other.
Mitchum and Shira were ahead of them. They stopped and talked with a reporter for TMZ. That didn't last long. Mitchum and Shira are retired. Not newsworthy. When Logan and his family approached, several cameras were flashing and several microphones were pushed in front of them. He stopped to talk. "Mr. Huntzburger, introduce your wife and little girl." one of the reporters said. Logan smiled. He loved showing off his family. "This," he said with his hand on Rory, "Is my wife. I am sure you know her as Rory Gilmore, New York Times features editor, but I know her as Mrs. Rory Huntzburger." Before anyone could say anything, Mia chimed in. Amelia Virginia Dugray." She had heard the lady asked Shira who she was wearing, so she added. "I am wearing Amelia." The reporters laughed. Telling her how pretty she was and how lucky she was to have a daddy like Logan Huntzburger.
Emily and Richard were not too far behind. "Richard, did you hear that. That child is so bold. She takes after Lorelai, not Rory." Richard nodded. Jaylan and Nancy were in line too. Tristan and Anita were just getting out of the limo.
Logan did not get into the ballroom before he was pulled away to talk business. He hates when this happens, but it is all a part of being the CEO. He had watched his dad for years do this. Rory whispered in his ear as he was walking away. "Get me a drink at the bar please." Logan nodded. They went in search of their seats. Mia spotted Trac and Auntie Honor. "Moma, Auntie Honor, and Trac," She said, pointing at them. "Don't point," Rory said. "Well, how will I tell you where there is?" Mia asked. Rory chuckled. "You say, over by the big red flowers."
They headed toward Honor. Rory was sure their table would be close. When they reached Honor. "I see they grabbed him before he got a foot in the ballroom," Honor said. "They got my dad too," Trac said. "Trac, I going to watch movies in the room with Kimmy in a while. Do you want to come?" Mia asked. Trac looked at Honor with a look on his face. Please. "Yes, When you start to go, let me know and Trac can go with you." Honor said.
Logan returned to Rory and Mia. Greeting Honor and Trac. "I see Josh has gone missing already," Logan said. "Yes, he was pulled away by his father." Honor said. Logan looked at his watch. "I guess it is time for me to go make my speech. Dad is giving me that look. Oh here comes the party planner, See you in a few," Logan said, kissing Rory on the cheek.
The party planner led Logan to the platform. It didn't take long before everyone was watching him. "Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome. For those of you that have had your head in the sand, I'm Logan Huntzburger, CEO of HPG. This year has been phenomenal. Several years ago we started transitioning our larger newspapers to digital. We knew that this was the only way to increase our readership…
While Logan was giving his speech, Rory's thoughts were elsewhere. She was thinking back to her college days when it would have been a fight to get Logan to come to something like this. She was amused that he came to her Grandparents Vow Renewal:
LOGAN: I like the suit, Kashmir.
RORY: I didn't know you were going to be here.
LOGAN: Really? I thought you put my name on the list.
RORY: No.
LOGAN: Oh, well, it must be your grandparents invited me. My parents are around here somewhere.
RORY: Oh, so you came with your parents?
LOGAN: Yup.
RORY: And ¯
LOGAN: And, what?
RORY: Where's the blonde?
LOGAN: She's at the bar.
RORY: Oh, yeah, she's pretty.
LOGAN: Yeah? You want me to hook you up?
RORY: No, I was just saying ¯
LOGAN: What are you just saying?
RORY: That she's pretty. That you brought a pretty girl. She's pretty, and the two of you are pretty together. In case you were wondering.
LOGAN: Jewel's a friend of the family, I've known her forever. She's visiting her parents in town, and she had nothing to do, so she asked to tag along. We're not dating.
Logan was finished with his speech. Everyone was clapping. The music started for the dancing to begin. Logan approached Mia. "May I have this Dance?" He said. Mia stood up and bowed at him. He started laughing. "Where did you learn that?" Logan asked as he carried her to the dance floor. "In my books," she replied. Rory watched them dance together. She was reminded of Her ad Logan's first dance.
RORY: Do you want to dance?
LOGAN [gets up]: After you.
LOGAN: What?
RORY: Why did you come?
LOGAN: Open bar.
RORY: Quite a draw for a guy with an American Express black card.
LOGAN: Live band, salad, butter pats ¯
RORY: Logan ¯
LOGAN: Little knit bags full of those Jordan almonds ¯
RORY: Are you ever going to ask me out? You flirt with me. You act like you like me a little. You show up here, with a friend, not a date. I mean, aren't you? Ever? You do like me, right?" Logan smiles. Oh. Okay. Uh, no problem. I'll just, um, let you go back to your table, and I'll just start burrowing directly into the ground.
LOGAN: Rory.
RORY: I should be in China by midnight.
LOGAN: Rory.
RORY: You called me Rory.
LOGAN: I want to be clear.
RORY: Oh, good.
LOGAN: I have thought about asking you out, several times. I just don't think it's such a good idea.
RORY: Why not?
LOGAN: Because you're special.
RORY: Special, like 'Stop eating the paste', special?
LOGAN: You are beautiful. You are intelligent. You are incredibly interesting. You're definitely girlfriend material. I, however, am definitely not boyfriend material. I can't do commitment, and I don't want to pretend to you that I can. If I were to date you, there would be no dating. It would be something, right away, and I'm not that guy.
RORY: But' I'm not looking for anything something like.
LOGAN: Rory.
RORY: I'm not. I've done that. As a matter of fact, I just did that, and that's not what I want.
LOGAN: I'm not saying you want that right now.
RORY: No, I don't want that at all. No, I'm not expecting anything. I'm just I like you, and I want to spend some time with you. No strings attached.
LOGAN: No strings attached, huh.
RORY: Hey, girls just wanna have fun. Stringless fun.
LOGAN: You may feel like that now, but ¯
RORY: I do feel like that now.
LOGAN: Okay, but
Rory is brought out of her thoughts when Mitchum asks her to dance. They go to the dance floor. "Logan was instructed by Mia before we left the room that she was to be his first dance," Rory told Mitchum. "That girl is something. The way Logan is with her… Don't let Emily and Shira bother you with the baby talk. Logan told me that right now you and he have decided not to try for a child. I'm not going to lie to you. I would love to have a grandson to carry on the Huntzburger name, but that decision is up to you and Logan. Don't let anyone push you." Mitchum said. "Thank you, Mitchum. I'm sure Logan told you what a rough time I had after Mia was born." Rory said. Mitchum nodded his head. "You know what to expect this time," Mitchum said.
The dance ended. Before they could return to their seats, Logan asks Rory to dance. Mitchum took Mia back with him to the table. Rory and Logan were dancing. "What did he have to say?" Logan asked. Rory watched as Mitchum held Mia on his hip while talking to someone. "He told me not to let Shira and Emily pressure me into having another child. Then he proceeded to tell me it would be different this time because I would know what to expect." Logan laughed. "Mitchum to the rescue," Logan said. "It's fine. The decision is ours. We will make it together."
Before long, it was time for Logan and his assistant to go to the platform and give out some awards. This was Rory's cue to take Mia upstairs. She stopped by Honor's table to see if Trac wanted to go. The three of them rode the elevator to the penthouse. Rory dropped both kids off telling them that they would be back later.
