She Ain't My Blood, But She's My Girl

Chapter 36

Logan woke to his phone ringing. He grabbed the phone before it could wake up Rory, and as he looked at her, Mia. Mia must have crawled in the bed with them sometimes during the night. He and his phone stepped into the bathroom so he wouldn't wake his girls. His girls, wow.

"Hello Collin, do you know what time it is. Are you okay? What is wrong"…...Logan was worried. A call from Collin in the middle of the night 10 years ago was nothing unusual. Now? Had him worried. "Okay, thanks for calling…..Just make sure this is not going to delay the adoption….Yeah, I will tell Rory. Do you know if they expect anything from us?... Okay, call me in the morning. Bye," Logan hung up the phone. Now he was worried. Jaylan passed away. The adoption is not final yet, so Mia is still his granddaughter. What will they want from Mia?

The next morning, Logan and Rory planned to sleep in. Mia had other plans. She was in the middle of the bed. She was awake. Logan gave her his laptop and headphones. She watched movies for a little while. Now she was ready to get up. Logan got up with her, shooing her to her room to get dressed. He was trying not to wake Rory.

He and Mia were eating breakfast when Rory came downstairs. She fixed her only cup of coffee for the day and sat with them while they ate. Mia finished first and wanted to go play on the trampoline in the backyard. She was told to go get her shoes on before going outside.

"Ace, I got a phone call early this morning, around 3:30," Logan told her. Rory tilted her head to look at him. "Collin called. Rory's smile on her face stopped him. "I know, it has been a while since I got a call at that time of the morning from Collin. But anyway, He called to tell me Jaylan passed." He was watching her, trying to gauge her reaction. Being pregnant she has surprised him with her reactions.

"The adoption is not final. What does that mean for Mia?" she asked. She was worried. He could see it all over her face. At her last doctor's appointment, her blood pressure had been high. She was warned about the stress.

"Collin is checking for me. I don't think she should go to the funeral." Logan said matter of factly. She nodded, she agreed. "Should we?" he asked. She shrugged her shoulders.

Logan and Rory moved to the patio so that Mia could play outside. It was almost noon when Collin called Logan back. Logan disappeared into the house while he was talking to Collin on the phone. When he came back out to the patio, he had his laptop. He pulled up the obituary. He and Rory were looking at it. Mia's name and any mention of a granddaughter were omitted. Rory was relieved.

"Let me think about it. I'm not sure. I know that if I go it will be to the funeral only….It says here that the funeral will be Wednesday." Rory said. Logan nodded his head.

"Just let me know, I will go with you." He told her.

Collin called Logan Monday at his office. He explained that the court date was being pushed back. He advises Logan that he got a call from Tristan's lawyer. Tristan wants Jaylan's Will to be read before the adoption is official. Tristan is not changing his mind, he is not sure what Jaylan did after he was confronted about the embezzlement.

After he got off the phone with Collin, Logan decided to go tell Rory in person. When he entered the building, word spread rapidly through the building. Rory was waiting on him when he got off the elevator.

"Guess you won't be able to surprise me now that you are the big boss," Rory told him laughing. Logan was smiling, "I guess," he said.

They went into Rory's office and closed the door. He explained that the adoption has been pushed back. He explained that Tristan was just being cautious. He told her that he thought Tristan thought Jaylan might have left Mia everything in his Will out of spite. If he did, that would leave his mom with nothing. As long as Mia is still his daughter, he can sign the money over to his mother. If she didn't belong to him anymore, he would have to go to court to get the money.

Rory listened to her husband. At first, she was shocked. It sounded like Tristan was trying to take money away from Mia, but then she realized that Tristan was trying to take care of his mother. Mia has plenty of options when it comes to money. Rory was smiling.

"Ace, Why are you smiling?" Logan asked. He wasn't sure how any of this was something to smile about.

"Logan, the papers for the adoption were scheduled to be signed this week." Logan nodded. "The termination of Tristan's rights was signed a couple of weeks ago. Tristan does not have any rights, money or not." Logan started laughing.

He picked up his phone to call Collin. Rory told him to tell Collin not to say anything. Leave it like it is.

"I don't have a problem signing it over to Tristan if Jaylan left it to Mia.

Logan and Rory went to the funeral. They sat with Emily and Richard. They left right after the ceremony. They did not speak with the family. Rory had already called and spoke with Tristan and told him how sorry she was for his loss.

The reading of the Will was scheduled for Friday. Tristan called Thursday. He told Rory that Jaylan's lawyer said that Mia did not need to be at the reading. Rory was relieved. After the reading of the Will, Tristan called to let Rory know that all was well. Jaylan did not acknowledge Mia at all.
