She Ain't My Blood, But She's My Girl
Chapter 48
Mia enjoyed trick or treating. She went to Lane's house, Sookie's house, and the rest of the Stars Hollow group. She spent the night with Lorelai and Luke. Emily made a point in finding Rory and Logan before they left. She apologized and told them both that she was proud of them and the family they had.
The shower was scheduled for 1:00 at the Dragonfly. Rory was glad. She wanted to get this over with and go home. She was tired and miserable. Logan let her sleep. He knew she had been up and down all night. It was close to 12:00 before Logan woke her up.
"Hey, Ace, Babe, You need to get up. I know you didn't sleep well last night, but it is 12:00. The shower starts in an hour." Logan told her sitting in the bed. She gradually opened her eyes. She could smell coffee. She looked at Logan.
"Is that coffee I smell?" she sat up this time. Logan moved off the bed and grabbed the tumbler of coffee from Luke's.
"He brewed it special for you." He said as he handed her the cup.
"Decaf?" Rory asked with a sour look on her face. Logan was laughing at her.
"No, It's the real thing." He told her. He could see the smile as it crept across her face. She took a sip and moaned. This time Logan let out a bold laugh.
Rory took her cup with her and headed to the bathroom. She needed a shower and to get dressed for the party.
Rory was sitting in the middle of the dining hall at the Dragonfly Inn. Lane was sitting next to her. All the ladies were Ewing and ahhing over the baby picture set around the table. Ms. Patty was telling how Logan looked like her 4th husband but acted like her 2nd. Babett told Patty to have a seat, she ain't never had a man like Morey. Rory was smiling. This is the kind of shower she liked. At this baby shower, she would get stuff off her register. She had asked Honor, Emily, and Shira to spread the word that charitable donations were her wish for the County Club. Either they didn't tell them or they didn't listen.
Mia was talking to Gypsy. She was nodding her head, just like she understood what Gypsy was talking about. Lorelai walked over to Rory. She had a measuring tape in her hand. She made Rory stand up so that she could measure her. Everyone wrote down what they thought Rory's measures were. Gypsy won.
Next Ms. Patty, Mia, and Babett were standing by the gift table with a baby bottle. They are going to see who can drink the bottle the fastest. Mia won.
Next, they opened gifts. Lane was taking names and gifts so that Rory could write the thank you cards. She got a blanket from Lorelai, made out of some of Rory's old clothes. Mia had one just like it. Lane and Paris got together and purchased car seats. Babette and Ms. Patty gave the babies lots of sleepers. Gypsy got the babies lots of booties. Emily could not attend this shower without a gift. She bought the babies a bedside crib. She read that the babies like to stay together when they sleep. The babies also got lots of books and soft toys.
Logan and Luke came to help load the gifts into the car. Rory enjoyed her stay, but she is ready to get home. While they were loading the car, Rory was saying her goodbyes. Rory wanted her bed. Her back was hurting. She needed to tell her mom that the mattress in that cottage needed to be replaced. Her back had not hurt like this sinceā¦...she was in labor with Mia.
Rory was walking back to the car, she could see Lorelai buckling Mia in. She stopped to catch her breath. One of the babies kicked and she thought she was going to pass out. She was standing there, one hand on her back and one hand on her stomach. She had this look on her face that if you knew her you would know that she was in deep thought. Another Kick.
"Logan," Rory hollered across the yard. She was not moving. Her water just broke. "Logan."
"Ace, just a minute. I am trying to get Mia buckled in. The car seat got moved and I can get it tight enough." Logan said.
"Logan," Rory said one more time. This time Logan stood up and looked at her. She smiled at him. "Babe, I think it probably will be best if you unbuckled Mia. I think she should stay here. Maybe she can stay with mom." Logan was looking at her. Mia had school tomorrow.
"Rory, sweetheart," Lorelai was saying as she walked toward her. "You okay?" Before Roy could answer, a pain hit her. This time she did fall to her knees. She groaned, holding her stomach. Logan took off toward her, sliding on the grass. Mia started crying. Something was wrong with her mommy.
"Ace, is it time?" Logan asked. Rory nodded. "Can you stand up?" Rory nodded. Logan helped her up. He helped her walk to the car. Luke had grabbed Mia and told her that it was time for her brother and sister to come and that Daddy is taking Mommy to the hospital so the doctor can help mommy have the babies. Mia bought it for now. She and Mommy talked about her going to the hospital to get the babies.
Meanwhile, Lorelai was trying to buckle Rory Into the passenger seat. Logan was on the phone with Paris. Paris instructed Logan to take her to Hartford. With twins, everything moves faster. Logan told her to call Dr. Carol then told her the HPG helicopter would be ready to leave in 20 minutes for the HPG building. He would call to clear them for entering the building.
Logan pulled out of the drive, pointing the car toward Hartford. When he arrived at the hospital, a nurse was waiting with a wheelchair. Logan parked and jumped out to help get Rory out of the car. He had to wait. After he unbuckled her, she had a contraction. As soon as it was over he got her out of the car and into the wheelchair. The nurse told him to park the car. They would be at the elevator waiting.
While they were waiting, the nurse introduced herself. Her name was Hazal. Rory started to tell her who she was when another pain hit her. Hazal looked at her watch. She noted the contractions were about 5 minutes apart. Logan came running toward them.
"Good, glad you made it. You don't know how many dads we lose." Hazal told them as the elevator door closed. When it opened again, they were met by a doctor.
"Mr. and Mrs. Huntzburger, I am Dr. Beard. I have talked with Dr. Gellar. We will get you settled and hooked up to the monitors," he was telling them as they walked down the hall of the LORELAI GILMORE MATERNITY wing. "I will get you checked out and call Dr. Gellar, she assured me that she and Dr. Culverson would be in 20 minutes."
"I'm sorry," Logan and Rory both said to the doctor. He laughed.
"I know Dr. Gellar well. She is a fine doctor." He said.
"With no bedside manner," Logan said. Rory swatted him about the time another contraction hit.
"Would you like for me to go ahead and order the epidural? We will not be able to start it until Dr. Culverston gets here." Rory was nodding her head, trying real hard to concentrate on her breathing. In and Out, In and Out.
"Logan. Just. You." She said, He looked at her to explain. "I. just. want. you. in. the. room. with. Me. Logan nodded. He understood what she said.
"Will it be okay If they want to wait in the waiting room? If not, I will tell them not to come." He asked. "I. don't. care. I. want. you." Logan nodded. He was clear.
When got to the room, he helped Rory change into a hospital gown. They did not have her hospital bag with them. He would have to send someone to get it. Frank. That's who he will send.
While they hooked her up, he stepped out of the room to make the calls. When he stepped back in, the doctor had just finished the exam.
"Looks like about 8 cm. How long have you been in labor.?" Hazel asked. Rory just shrugged her shoulders.
"My back has been hurting for several days, but I didn't think that was labor. That is not how it was with Mia." Rory told her. The doctor and nurse both nodded.
Logan was standing by Rory's bed. Hazal was checking the machines motoring the babies' heartbeat. They all turned their heads toward the door when they heard Paris's voice.
Logan mumbled. "And it starts." Paris came flying in the door. Dr. Carol is not too far behind her. Paris went straight to Rory.
"Gilmore are you okay? How far apart are the contractions?" She then looked at the doctor. "How much is she dilated? Where is the epidural?" Paris was looking around like Paris would think these people are incompetent.
While Paris was asking her questions, Hazal and the other nurse in the room looked at the name on the chart. They were sure they had been told Mrs. Huntzburger would be having her babies in this hospital, but Dr. Gellar called her Gilmore. The other nurse swallowed hard. This is Lorelai Gilmore Hayden Huntzburger. She is giving birth on the hospital wing with her name on it. They didn't get to ask any questions because things started to progress pretty fast.
"Paris, I instructed Dr. Beard to wait on me before ordering the epidural." Dr. Carol said. She then turned to Dr. Beard. "I see you have it ordered but on hold. Thank you." Then Dr. Carol's attention was on Rory. She was looking between Rory and the chart.
"Looks like 8cm. That is good. Rory, you are 37 weeks. 40 would have been ideal. 37 is not bad. 38 would have been better. Rory, Logan, I am not trying to scare you. I just want you to understand. At 37 weeks, one or both of them could have breathing problems. You do not worry. The NICU is on stand by as well as a pediatrician. Logan if the babies need to go to the NICU, you stay here. They will let us know as soon as they know. Are we okay?" Logan and Rory both nodded.
All though Dr. Carol telling them what could happen, Rory's pains were getting closer together. The anesthesiologist came to insert the epidural. After that Rory felt better. For a minute. The epidural eases the pain but it does not take it away. It wasn't very long before they dropped the bottom of the bed and told Rory to get ready.
