What Girls Want

Chapter 11: The Assignment

School had just let out and Arnold was still reeling over this development.

That he is now stuck doing a book report with Helga G. Pataki of all people...the girl who is both his tormentor and secret admirer.

"I can't believe this..."Arnold muttered under his breath as he went to his locker.

Gerald was there and sent him a pitying look, even if he didn't understand WHY his friend was like this.

"Tough break, man...but look on the bright side...thanks to your gift, you'll be able to hear whatever Helga is thinking..."Gerald said.

"Hearing her thoughts is the problem..."Arnold muttered, getting his friend's attention.

Before Gerald could ask what he meant, Helga approached them and Arnold almost flinched at the sight of her.

That made Gerald raise a brow but Helga began talking.

"Listen Football Head, I don't like the thought of wasting my valuable time with the likes of you but since Mr. Simmons says we HAVE to do this then I guess I don't have a choice..."Helga said in her usual way.

However, in her mind, she said the opposite.

"At last, a chance to spend time with my love...all alone...oh~..."Helga's swooning thoughts were heard and Arnold made a face at that while his best friend sent him a look.

"What's with him? I know Helga is a pain but that's nothing new to him..."Gerald wondered as the two blondes continued talking.

"Anyway, like I said...I just want to get this over with so I can get back to my life. So, I'm stopping by the boarding house later to get this done. Got it, Hair boy?..."Helga said in a mean way but Arnold could still hear what she is REALLY thinking deep down.

After a moment, he sighed and nodded.

"Whatever you say, Helga..."He said.

"Darn right, Football Head..."Helga said before marching away in her usual manner.

Arnold could still hear her thoughts until she was out of sight, thoughts about how she's actually happy about this whole thing and he means REALLY happy about it.

The football headed boy sighed.

"This is gonna be a long assignment..."He muttered as he walked out of the school with Gerald.

Later

Arnold was now in the boarding house, trying to drown out the thoughts he was hearing from both Suzie and his grandmother...but they seem pretty loud today.

"Oh, that Oskar! I just know he's at the race track again. Every time he says that he's gonna stop and find a REAL job, he goes and blows all our money there. Ugh!..."He heard from Suzie as soon as he walked into the house.

"I wonder how Phil's enjoying his RASPBERRY cobbler..."He heard his grandmother's mischievous thoughts on his way up to his room.

Now, he is in the solidarity of his room, awaiting the arrival of another confusing female who's thoughts are also very loud and strange.

"She'll be here any minute. I better prepare..."He thought to himself as he did just that.

He knew Helga is going to spend this entire thing SAYING mean things about him and thinking up the opposite, making the whole situation a whole new level of weird.

He's already learned about her poetry...that she is the anonymous poet of their class and that Mr. Simmons has been reading her poetry out loud (something he is still recovering from).

Who knows what else he's gonna learn from her during this whole assignment?

The worst part is, he can't do anything about it without revealing himself and that would just cause a bunch of other problems that he can't deal with right now.

"I just wish that I could do something...anything...to deal with this...especially when she shows up..."Arnold thought before he heard his grandfather down stairs.

"Arnold, your friend with the pink bow and the one eye brow is here..."The old man's voice was heard.

Arnold heard this and sighed.

"She's here..."He whispered as he went to get this over with.

Besides, he's done assignments with Helga before and while a challenge, he's survived.

How much harder will this one be?
