Walking in through the door marked 402, the couple found themselves in Rei's apartment. It was not the pinnacle of luxury, but once Shinji helped her put some elbow grease into it, it looked decent enough to live in. Still barren of furniture aside from the single metal frame bed in Reis room, a dresser, a nightstand, and a rather small wooden table and some mats in the living room.

Rei let go of her lover's arm and went off to go take a shower. Shinji in the meantime went towards the kitchen, going through the fridge and cabinets for ingredients to make a meal. He decided on making fried rice, without meat of course since Rei doesn't buy or eat any.

Also deciding on making tea, he filled a kettle and set it with a pan on the stove. Waiting for everything to heat up, he took out his phone and called Misato. She was actually the only other person who knew about him and Rei, well aside from Ritsuko now.

He had told her about a week after they started dating. She was so happy for him and started going into detail about dating advice, but Shinji had her swear not to tell anybody. She was initially against that as she wanted to tell her friends and tease him about, but he told her how Rei didn't want anybody knowing and how important this was to him. When Misato saw how serious he was she agreed before giving him a hug, as well as a condom, much to his embarrassment.

His phone dialed once, then twice, before a voice picked up.

"Shinji?" came Misato's voice, luckily he caught her before she got completely drunk.

"Hey Misato"

"I was wondering where you went," She said with a hint of worry.

"I um went to Rei's" he said rubbing the back of his head.

"Rei's?"

"Y-yeah, she wasn't feeling so well after the test, and she wanted me to go with her"

"Oh alright Shinji, just don't do anything I wouldn't" She said with an obvious wink in her voice.

"Shouldn't it be anything you would do…" he mumbled.

"What was that?"

"Nothing!"

"Hmph, well alright then, don't forget to use protection, you don't want to get Rei pregnant now do you" she said in a teasing voice before hanging up. Shinji however deadpanned and took the time to finally take a breath and think.

'Oh god' he thought as he grasped the situation, 'My girlfriends pregnant.'

Slight panic set in him as he started thinking how people would react. 'Misato would maybe congratulate me before giving me a lecture and probably a few slaps. Asuka would accuse me of perverted things then attack me definitely. What about school? Surely people may notice if she's pregnant? and what would Rei do? if she leaves for the rest of the year, then they will probably ask me for answers. What if they realise I'm the father? I'M A FATHER!' There was both some amazement and fear in that last thought.

'What have I done. I'm fifteen and already going to be a father. I'm like one of those americans from those tv shows. I didnt think Rei could get pregnant, Im a stupid idiot like Asuka's alway telling me.' Shinji then shook his head and took a few deep breaths. 'Calm down Shinji, no time to panic, Rei needs me' He remembered how she sounded almost scared. 'I won't be like those american teens, I'll be there for Rei. I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away.' he thought sternly as he started focusing on cooking.

Rei stood in the shower letting the warm water run over her. She took deep breaths and stayed still, almost in a meditative trance. Moving a pale hand across her waist, she let it rest on her lower stomach. She was pregnant. She had a baby growing inside of her. A life. A child. Hers. And Shinji's.

Remembering back to when it was conceived brought her back to a night of passion she shared with him. Thinking about it gave her a slight blush and a small smile. It wasn't their first time, but it was arguably much better than it. It felt more comfortable and they knew what to do. Their first time was the result of her telling him her origins after they had been somewhat secretly dating for about a month.

She still remembered when Shinji confessed his love to her.

-Flashback-

Shinji had come to Rei's apartment to deliver her homework since she had missed the day. He knew it was because she had to do something at Nerv, but that was about it.

Lately he had found himself jittery around her, unable to think properly, his thoughts being clouded by her. He knew he had a crush on her, but it was never this bad.

Since he was one of the few people at school who knew her address, he was selected to take her things to her. He knocked at her door and was greeted with Rei opening it, she was thankfully not naked and wore her uniform. Shinji had long ago stopped questioning if the only thing she had to wear was her school uniform, as he found the answer was yes.

After managing to greet her and hand her the papers, he decided to be a bit bold and make small talk. Through his stuttering he managed to get invited in for tea, even it was only due to Rei thinking he was could outside and trying to be polite.

"T-Thank you for the tea, Ayanami" he said as he was given a hot cup of said beverage,

The blue haired beauty simply nodded as she poured herself a cup.

There was an uncomfortable silence, before Shinji tried to make conversation.

"Y-you don't get many visitors d-do you Ayanami" He looked around at the state of her apartment, still baffled that someone like her has to live in a place like this.

"No, I have no one to visit me," she stated plainly.

"N-no one?" She shook her head.

"Who would visit me"

"W-Well, what about family?"

"I have no known relatives, living or deceased" Shinji sweatdropped as he realised he probably should've known she had no family.

"Don't y-you have l-like a legal guardian?" He thought of his situation with Misato and how she was currently his guardian, despite how irresponsible she can be sometimes.

"I have basically been emancipated since thirteen, but I am legally under the care of Nerv as a whole." Huh

"W-what about friends?" Silence

Shinji started getting nervous, wondering if he shouldn't have said that.

"I do not have any friends" She said quieter than before as she looked at her tea.

"But w-what about me?" He asked, causing her to look at him.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I thought I was y-your friend," he said meekly, "But it's alright if you don't feel like that…"

"Why would you want to be friends with me?" Shinji just stared at his tea.

"W-well why wouldn't I, I mean, you have saved my life before. We've been through a lot at Nerv, a-and you actually understand what it's like to pilot the eva's. You don't judge me like other people do. You're smart, insightful, and pretty…" He started blushing when he realised what he said.

"Ikari, why would you say that?" Rei said as she stared at Shinji dumbfounded with a faint pink blush.

Shinji looked back at Rei and decided to be bold, telling himself not to run away, he audibly gulped.

"B-because I-I l-like you Aya-Rei '' He said using her first name, "I-I have for a while, ever since I've met you. I just think y-your really amazing and incredible, I-I used to have a c-crush on you, but n-now I think its m-more" He looked at her with a dark blush as she just looked back with pink cheeks.

"I-I think I love you Rei" He closed his eyes as he finished speaking, internally cringing and screaming at himself as he stood there waiting for Rei's response.

The girl in question staring in awe at the boy in front of her who just confessed his love to her. She didn't know what she felt, but there was something about this boy, Shinji Ikari, that made her say the following.

"Ikar-Shinji… I am not good with feelings, I do not understand them. You seek companionship from me, but… I don't know if I could give you what you want, or ever feel the same way for you" Shinji's face fell, starting to resemble a kicked puppy, until she continued.

"But, I am willing to try" Shinji looked taken aback, not expecting that, he composed himself.

"T-that's all I want" He said before he shyly stepped towards. He looked into her as she looked back into his, red meeting blue. He took a deep breath before he did the boldest thing he had ever done.

He leaned forward and pushed his lips to Rei, completely catching the pale girl off guard. It was obviously awkward as it was quite literally him pushing his lips on hers, but the gesture and meaning was there. It was a minute later that Shinji pulled away, his face was a very bright red.

"I-I-I s-should g-go, b-but maybe w-we can go do s-something sometime, i-f you want" Rei stood still, only blinking.

"I-I'll s-see you l-later Rei" He stuttered before bolting out of the apartment, leaving a stunned Rei standing in place. She reached to her lips and felt them, the edges seemed to move upwards as a warm sensation filled her chest.

-End Flashback-

They had their first date a few days later, it was located at her apartment, where they discussed the conditions of their relationship, it wasn't until a few weeks later that Shinji was able to stop being a stuttering mess around her. She was glad she gave him a chance. He was able to help her get a somewhat better understanding of her emotions, as he would generally ask her how she would feel and try to help identify what she was feeling at the moment. Also he got better at kissing.

Then despite what she had told him about her being made mostly of angel dna with a slight amount of human, including the late Yui Ikari, he still accepted and loved her. She felt overcome with emotions, then she started kissing him, and before she knew it, they were undressing each other. It was at first a bit painful for her but started feeling good, it was also awkward for both of them, overall she was happy that they became one that night. They only used protection once as Shinji had a condom, but that was the only time however as neither of them had any stds from what they knew, and until now, Rei was under the impression she was sterile. Also Shinji felt embarrassed at the thought of buying condoms.

There were a few other occasions where they had made love. Each time felt better than the last as they started getting more bold. That night was the last time they had recently slept together. Due to how busy they had been lately from their schoolwork to Nerv tests, and the occasional world threatening angel attack, they haven't had too much time for each other lately, what with trying to keep their relationship secret.

That was all out the window now. It had to be. How could she have a baby without anybody else knowing. It's bad enough Dr Akagi had to know for her to know, but how was she supposed to hide from the commander's watchful eye. Quite honestly, she was surprised she had managed to hide her relationship with Shinji from him. It was mostly due to her knowledge about section 2's surveillance around her home, a condition of her living on her own, and how she also knew their schedule and would manage to sneak Shinji in between their shifts to avoid suspicion from his prolonged stays. 'But if the Commander found out, he would most likely have me replaced', She shook the thought from her head for the moment, trying to keep herself from being stressed out, turning her thoughts to the other important subject. The baby.

The thought of having a baby filled her with so much dread, but also something warm.

'Happiness?' she started thinking more in depth about why she would feel this way. 'Perhaps it's because we could be a family? Me, Shinji, and a baby, I believe that is an adequate family unit. Family. I've never had one, and neither has Shinji for that matter, at least not for a long time. So maybe it's the thought that I could give him one and be a part of it that makes me feel happy'.

Rei had a small content smile as she pondered this, before a more upsetting thought popped up.

'What if he doesn't want a baby?' The single sentence caused a pit in her stomach, 'What if his intentions to help are not genuine? What if he wants to leave? Could I even raise a child on my own? But it would be my fault for driving him away. I assumed I could not get pregnant, a foolish thing, and now I have made him a father whether he wants to or not. He would have every reason to leave' The train of thought caused the feel to deepen, until she took a deep breath.

"No, he would not do that" She said aloud to herself, "He loves me, and I, I love him"

She then realised that she had spent enough time in the shower and decided to get out. I should discuss this with Shinji.

After drying herself and getting dressed in a pair of underwear and one of the shirts Shinji had left with her, she walked out and was met with a delicious smell from the kitchen. Walking in, she saw Shinji stirring together what appeared to be fried rice in a pan. When she realised he hadn't noticed her, she decided to announce her presence.

She did so by walking up and hugging him from behind.

Shinji was slightly startled as he felt arms wrap around his chest, but calmed once he knew who it was.

"It smells good Shinji" She tells him as she rests her head over his shoulder.

"Thanks Rei, it's actually almost done" She gave him a squeeze before letting go and setting up the table.

Soon after Shinji serves her and himself as they sit down, pouring two cups of tea as well.

"Thank you Shinji," Rei says genuinely as she takes a bite and savors it.

"Your welcome Rei" They both then eat in comfortable silence. Once they finished, they took their dishes to the sink and washed them. Rei chose this time to speak with her boyfriend.

"Shinji…"

"Yeah Rei?"

"Will you, will you stay?"

"Of course, I already told Misato im staying toni-"

"No, I mean, will you stay with me even though I'm…" Shinji froze as he understood what she meant.

"Rei, I wouldn't-I won't leave you, not over this" He looked at her

"T-Then, what do you think, about having a family" Shinji paused to think about that

"I… guess I've always wanted one. Though it was always more of having my own parents. But, I am kind of excited about being a father, except. . ." He trailed off, causing Rei to look at him.

"Except what?"

"D-Do you think I could be a good dad?" Shinji's eyes fell as he said this.

"What do you mean?"

"W-well you know I didn't have a dad in my life, I-I don't really know what to do as one, wh-what If I'm bad at it, I-I don't want to mess them up like me" He said as he looked down at the water in his sink.

"Shinji…" Rei said as she gave him a gentle embrace, "I think you will be a wonderful father"

"But-"

"Shinji, do you think I can be a good mother?"

"O-of course Rei, you will be a great mother" he almost instantly replied.

"But I've never had any parental figures in my life, so by your logic, how could I be a good mother?" She shot back.

"I-"

"Shinji, I truly do believe that you will be a good father"

"Thank you Rei, I'll try my best" He embraced her back.

"That's all I want" She leaned up and gave him a peck on the lips before grinning at him, "Though it's been a while since you've accompanied me to my bed, would you care to join me?"

The sultry tone of voice she used was one Shinji was becoming familiar with by now, he blushed slightly and nodded. Rei then pulled him into her room and closed the door, they didn't end up sleeping until almost an hour later, laying bare as they held one another in eachothers arms.
