Chapter 91 Surgery anyone?
When Logan arrives at the hospital, Ricky was waiting in the lobby. He walked him to the elevator. "I stayed with her until you got here. Christopher called Lorelai and then He and Lana left when Lorelai got here." "Thanks, I really appreciate that. I know you must be tired. Call an Uber to take you home." Logan told him. "I will, I just want to check on Rory one more time." When they got off the elevator, Dr. Boyett was at the nurse's station. "Logan, I see you made it. I think our little momma was worried." "Yes, I just landed. I was going to surprise Rory, but I guess she beat me to it. I was in the air, that is why I didn't get your calls or text." "Let's go see her. I can explain everything to you."
Logan and Ricky followed Dr. Boyett into Rory's room, Rory was sitting up reading a book. Lorelai was watching Netflix on her tablet. "Ace," Logan said, walking in front of Dr. Boyett. "Logan!" He raced to her and hugged her. "What's going on? Ricky said it was not labor." Rory moved over so Logan could sit down on the bed. "Let Dr. Boyett explains it to you," Rory told Logan.
Dr. Boyett explained to Logan that Rory's pain is not labor, but gallstones. "We did a sonogram, if they were diamonds, she would be rich. She has a sack full." "What are you going to do about it? It is not something that just happened is it?" Logan asked. "No, she has been having pain from her gallbladder for a while now. It was not bad enough for her to complain." Dr. Boyett explained. "I had back pain. Not bad, I just thought it was part of growing old." Rory said to Logan. "Well, what made it bad enough to be in the hospital, is it because she is pregnant?" Logan asked. "Possibly being pregnant sped up the pace. This is something we would have had to operate on sooner or later. Being pregnant just made it sooner. She has a gallstone stuck in a bile duct. I have talked to doctor Burke. He is a surgeon. He will be doing the surgery in the morning." Dr. Boyett said. "I met him. He stopped by. He is nice. Paris approved." Rory said with a smile. "It's okay to do the surgery while she is pregnant? Will it harm the baby?" Logan asked. Lorelai was grinning. "Protective Daddy much?" she said. Logan looked up at her. "Don't you think I would have already asked these questions?" Lorelai said. "I want to hear first hand from the Doc's mouth." He said to his mother-in-law. He was not in the mood to play her childish games. "The surgery will be done laparoscopically. He will make several small incisions, each less than 1 inch long. There will be less pain after surgery and recovery quicker." Dr. Boyett explained. We have given her a mild dose of pain meds. This should keep the pain low enough for you to sleep tonight. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Dr. Burke will be here to see you before they prep you for surgery. I will be in the operating room the whole time, just in case." Dr. Boyett moved closer to the door. Try to get some sleep. Dr. Burke prescribed a sleep medicine that will not harm you or the baby if you want it. Just ring the buzzer." Dr. Boyett stepped out of the room.
Logan took a deep breath. "Ricky, Lorelai, I'm here now. If you want to go home and get some sleep." Ricky looked at Rory. She nodded. "I will take a uber home and bring back Rory's car in the morning. Dr. Burke said that she possibly could go home tomorrow." "That's a good idea, but why don't you let Lorelai drop you off?" Logan asks. Lorelai stood up. "LOgan you just got off an airplane. I can stay with Rory. You go home and get some sleep and be back up here in the morning." "Thanks, Lorelai, but I'm not going anywhere." Lorelai looked at Logan, then looked at Rory. "Okay, Well kiddo, you ready to go?" Lorelai asked Ricky. He nodded his head. He walked over to Rory's bed and bent down to kiss her on the cheek. "Thank you Ricky for helping me today." "That's what I'm supposed to do. That is the way my dad raised me." "Well, I appreciate you being here. Thanks" Rory said. "I second it," Logan said. "Come on kiddo, before they adopt you." Lorelai laughed as she pushed Ricky out the door.
Logan stood up. "I'm going to use the bathroom, freshen up a little." Okay, there is a shower in there if you want." Rory said. "I don't have any more clothes. I sent what I had with me home in the Uber." Rory laughed. "I had Karson pack me a bag when I found out I would be staying overnight. I told her to put some basketball shorts, a hoodie, and some boxers in my bag. Mom stopped by and picked it up." "My, My, aren't you smart. Can't say money was wasted on your Yale education." He walked to the chair that held her bag and found his clothes. "I will call Ricky to bring me some jeans and a shirt in the morning." "Good idea," Rory said.
Logan and Rory dosed on and off most of the night. Logan slept in the recliner in the room. Nancy brought him a pillow and a blanket so he could be somewhat comfortable. Rory started hurting again around 1 am. She was hurting badly enough that she woke Logan up. She was given some more pain meds. The nurses also hooked up a fetal monitor. Rory's blood pressure would go up every time a pain hit her. They wanted to make sure the baby was okay with her blood pressure.
Dr. Burke entered Rory's room around 5:30. "Good Morning Mrs. Huntzburger." Rory turned in the bed so she could see him. Logan sat up in the recliner. "I'm guessing this is Mr. Huntzburger?" He said looking at Logan. Logan stood up. "Yes, I'm Logan and this is Rory," Logan said, shaking his hand. "Logan this is Dr. Burke, he is the one that will be doing surgery on me," Rory said. "Yes, as I explained to your wife yesterday, we will make small inclusions. We will be able to remove the gallstone that is blocking her bile duct, then remove the gallbladder. None of this will hurt the baby and if everything goes as planned, she will be able to go home today." Dr. Burke said. "You will have to take it easy for a while. Do you have someone at home that can help you?" Logan looked at Dr. Burke. "Yes, I will be home," Logan said. Dr. Burke smiled. "Good" he tapped Rory's foot. "I will see you in the operating room. A nurse will be by to get you ready." He said as he left the room.
Logan looked at Rory. "Logan, don't." "What? What do you think I am going to do?" Before she could answer there was a knock on the door. Logan moved to open it and Ricky came in with a gym bag with Logan's clothes and his shaving kit. He handed it to Logan and walked to Rory's bed. "How are you feeling this morning?" "Just ready to get this over with and go home. I want to sleep in my bed." Ricky smiled, "I bet you do."
Logan came out of the bathroom. He had changed into the jeans and polo Ricky brought from home. "I'm going to go downstairs to the cafe and get breakfast. If I am not here when they take you back, I will be when you return. "Ricky, you don't need to stick around," Rory said. Ricky looked at her. "You don't want me here?" "NO, No, that is not what I am saying. I just know you have other things to do. I don't want to inconvenience you." Rory said as someone knocked on the door. It was Nancy and another nurse. "Rory, remember me, I'm Nancy, I will be your nurse while you are on the floor. This is Gina, she will be with you in the operating room."
Rory nodded. "Nancy, I know you met Ricky last night." "Yes your stepson" "This" she moved her hand to Logan's hand that was holding on to the bed railing, "is my husband, Logan." "Nice to meet you, Logan. We are going to take real good care of your wife and baby." Nancy said with a smile. While they had been talking, Gina was taking notes of her vitals and putting dreamy meds in her IV to prepare her for the surgery.
Rory and Logan were waiting for them to come get Rory for the surgery. Rory was beginning to twilight. "Logan," Rory said. Logan was smiling, because she was talking like she was tipsy. "What is it my dear Ace?" "He must not know you are. He looked at you like 'do you have someone at home to help'" Rory started laughing. "He must not know you are the all-mighty Logan Huntzburger" Logan was shaking his head. If she was still awake when she gets to the operating room, she would let that doctor know who he was. Logan felt like an apology was going to be needed.
Ricky and Logan were waiting in the room after the orderlies and Nurse Gina took Rory to the operating room. Nurse Nancy came in after they left to tell Logan that someone from the operating room will call this room to update you on Rory's surgery. She showed him the phone. Lorelai, Lana, and Christopher all arrived at the same time. Logan hoped he wouldn't have to referee. The room was one the end of the hall. It was bigger than most rooms. With everyone crowded in together, the room felt small. Ricky's phone vibrated, he looked at it, then at Logan, "I'm going to step out in the hall to take this." Logan nodded.
Lana and Christopher were talking by the window. Lorelai was sitting in the recliner Logan slept in and Logan was sitting in a chair beside where the bed used to be. Logan had his phone out. He wasn't really looking at anything, he just needed to look like he was, so no one would ask him how he was doing. Ricky entered back into the room. "That was Karson, she is leaving to take the boys to school. She wanted to know if we needed anything up here. I told her that we were fine. I also told her not to come to the hospital. I would keep her informed." Ricky said. He said it all so that everyone could hear, but he was talking to Logan. Logan nodded. "Thanks"
Rory had been gone about an hour and a half when the phone in the room rang. Logan jumped up to answer it. "Hello…..this is Logan Huntzburger… Okay, thank you for letting me know." He hung up the phone and took back the chair he was sitting in. "That was Nurse Gina. She was letting me know that Rory was being taken into the operating room now and the surgery will begin in 15 minutes." "You said she left 10 minutes after we got here," Lorelai said. "Where would she be, if she was not in the operating room?" Lana turned around to look at Lorelai. They have a staging area where patients wait in until they are ready for them in the OR." Lorelai looked at Lana like she had two heads.
"Well if she just went back to surgery, I'm going to go get a cup of coffee. I saw a coffee shop in the lobby." Lorelai said as she stood up to leave. "Anyone want a cup?" Everyone shook their heads no. "Logan, have you eaten anything since you got off the plane last night?" "No, I'm fine," Logan said. Ricky looked at Logan, then Lorelai. "I will go with you. Logan, I will bring you a muffin or a biscuit." Ricky said as he followed Lorelai. Logan got up from his seat. "If you will excuse me, I'm going to use the restroom." He said as he opened the door.
While Logan was in the bathroom, Lana asked Christopher to explain to her who Ricky is and why he is here. "Ricky is Billy's son. Billy is Rory's ex-husband and the twin's dad. Ricky is their half-brother. When Billy died, Ricky came to live with Rory. His mother travels a lot. He was left quite a bit of money and Rory named Billy's Will as the overseer of Ricky and the twin's money." "But why is he here in the hospital. There are enough people here. He should go home. He told his little girlfriend not to come." Christopher shook his head. "Lana, please stop. I don't understand you need to alienate everyone. Ricky is a good kid. Rory is a kind person. Karson is her employee, but she treats her like she is her child. That is the same way she treats Ricky." Before anything else could be said, Logan exited the bathroom. You could tell he splashed water on his face.
"You okay?" Christopher asked. Logan nodded. Before he could sit back down, the phone rang. "Hello…..20 minutes?...Thank you" Logan hung up the phone. "She is in recovery. Everything went fine. She is awake. They will bring her back here in about 20 minutes. Someone should" there was a knock on the door, then it opened. Two orderlies pushed a bed into the room. Nurse Nancy was right behind them. "Logan, did they call you yet?" "Yes, ma'am" "Good. When they get here with her, they will ask everyone to step out of the room, so that they can transfer her to this bed. This bed is sterile. Noone sits on it." Logan nodded. "Thank you." "It has been my pleasure," she said as she left the room.
Ricky and Lorelai were returning to the room as Nurse Nancy was leaving. "She will be back in the room shortly. They will ask us to step out while they move her to her bed." Logan said. Lorelai nodded. She still had a cup of coffee in her hand. "Lor, Rory will be awake when she gets here, maybe it is not a good idea to have a cup of coffee in the room," Christopher said. "She can't drink coffee. It will be okay." Lorelai said. Christopher looked at Logan like I tried. Christopher and Lana did not know that Logan heard their conversation about Ricky.
"Ricky," Logan said. Ricky looked up at Logan and walked over to him. "As soon as you see that Rory is okay, I need you to go home and help Karson get our bedroom ready for Rory. If Mrs. Lewis is there, asking her to please make some soups for Rory to eat when she gets home. When they get ready to release her, I will call you to come get us." Ricky nodded his head. "I brought you a muffin. It is in the bag on the table by the door." "Thanks, I will eat it after Rory is back in the room." Logan made a point in talking loud enough for Lana to hear.
