Chapter 26
FULL CIRCLE – PART 2
By
Kelly Batten
Back at the FBI, they were all looking inside the interrogation room. Fielding came up and said, "McCaffrey, do you want to take the lead on the interrogation."
"No, I think Duval and Jimmy should go in. Let her know what we have guys."
Duval said, "Don't worry we will."
They walked in and Murphy said, "How's your wrist Agent Pritchard."
Duval and Jimmy looked at each other and Duval said, "My wrist right now is irrelevant."
They sat down and Jimmy said, "Moira, it will go much easier on you if you talk."
"I'm not saying anything and if I do Jimmy Pritchard, you won't like it."
"I'm not so sure you'll be taken seriously Moira. We've looked at the jump drive."
"Have you?"
Duval said, "Yes, we have and there's a lot of incriminating information on there and yet, there's nothing on there with Jimmy's name. Your computer has been destroyed in the explosion. We checked the dark web and the cloud and none of this information is on there. You were good. You kept your footprint in cyberspace to a minimum so all that's left is this jump drive. Oh and make no mistake the FBI has made copies."
Murphy was stoic and said, "Where's Joan Soladar, Vic Shelley and John Strayburn?"
"I'm afraid they're dead and so is Joey Reynolds."
Murphy was starting to look like someone who was losing control. "What about Kyle Graff?"
"He's in protective custody. He was never working for you Senator. He and his brother Connor disliked each other profusely. He wanted to help set right what Connor helped you put in motion."
Jimmy said, "It's over Moira. The jump drive shows all of your transactions to all foreign entities. It shows your payoffs to Mike Evans the Federal Prosecutor and to Assistant Director Kaplan. I assure you, they're both singing like birds right now to avoid maximum prosecution and get a decent deal in the process. It's all there Moira, it shows the names of your little army of men in black. It shows the hit man you hired to take out Nick Hallerman in Nice, France. It shows your involvement in all of those bank robberies. It shows your hiring of the men to kidnap Paula McCaffrey, a federal agent. It also shows your little transaction to take out Agent Tucci. We know the whole super soldier plan. The big question is, were you collaborating directly with China or just a company in China. I'm sure the company answers to the government but were you speaking directly to the government Moira?"
Murphy said nothing other than, "I want to see my lawyer, Charles Kirk."
Duval said, "As you wish."
They walked out and Paula said, "I watched and it really isn't anything other than what any of us expected."
Duval said, "No but, is there any word on the rest of her private army?"
"Well, most of them I think may have lost their lives in the explosion or because of Sam Adams. We've got BOLOs and arrest warrants out for the rest of them but I suspect they're in the wind. We really don't need them to bring her down but I hate seeing anyone get away."
Jimmy said, "Sometimes you need to keep your eye on the main prize Paula. When I was sheriff, I cut quite a few deals with some low life's to get the main perpetrator."
"I know."
At that moment, Fielding came in, "She must have been communicating telepathically because her lawyer Charles Kirk is already here and demanding to see his client."
"Well, she's in there. All we can do at this point is direct them to a private room for counsel."
Jimmy then said, "Fielding?"
"Yes."
"Tell me something. In the beginning, you told Paula to investigate me and Duval here. We spoke to Agent Hoover and she made an incriminating comment about me that could have blown my cover. The next thing we know is that the video of our interrogation got destroyed. Were you responsible for that?"
Fielding smiled and said, "Sheriff, you don't remember me but, years ago before you became sheriff and were just a deputy, you answered a call to a house where a woman had been brutally beaten and shot. The woman's name was Lorraine Prescott. She was beaten and shot by my stepfather. You and the other deputy Gadwell, came upstairs and spoke to me and my younger brother very kindly and you put blankets over our heads and carried us out of the house so that we couldn't see our mother getting worked on by the paramedics. We saw you put handcuffs on our stepdad and put him in another vehicle to be charged with attempted murder. Our mother by the grace of God recovered and she got a divorce but, I never forgot your kindness to us.
When I first started to suspect that you were somehow connected to Resurrection, I knew that I owed it to you to fully investigate everything before doing anything rash and I knew that if I could help you that I would."
Jimmy looked at him quizzically and said, "Is your mother still alive?"
"Yes, she is, thanks to the quick response of the King County Sheriff's Department after I called 9-1-1 from the upstairs bedroom."
At that point, Charles Kirk came in and said, "Hello Paula."
Paula rolled her eyes and said, "Chaz… go to room 3 down the hallway and we'll get your client in there."
"Thank you. It's really a pity that we ended up on opposite sides of the legal profession."
"Really Chaz? I don't think that's a pity at all. I'd be very embarrassed right now to have Senator Murphy as a client."
He walked off.

Later that night, everyone was at Mary's house. Helen said to Jimmy, "Dad, do you think this long nightmare is over?"
"I hope so Honey. I just want to get back to normal or at least some semblance of normal." He looked over at Paula and Duval who were quietly talking to one another. "Hey you two!"
They looked at him and Duval said, "What is it Dad?"
"We got the bad guys so why are you two still here?"
Paula said, "What do you mean Jimmy?"
"I know it feels like much longer but it was just two days ago that you two tied the knot. How come you're not on your honeymoon?"
Duval said, "Dad there're still some things to take care of."
"Such as?"
Paula and Duval looked at each other and then Paula said, "Jimmy, I have go before the review board. I broke protocols. I was the senior agent and instead of listening to my boss, I listened to my would be daughter-in-law and we went into that facility with no backup. I have some explaining to do. Had I called for backup, maybe that facility didn't have to be blown up."
All of a sudden a voice came up behind her and said, "I'm to blame Paula not you. I'm going to tell the FBI that as well."
Paula turned and looked to see Jennifer standing there. "Jennifer, I was still the senior agent."
"Paula, you may have been the senior agent but I was under orders to blow up that place at all costs. All costs meaning that it didn't matter who got hurt or killed in the process. If necessary, I was supposed to pull my gun on both of you. I prayed it wouldn't come to that."
Liza was stunned and said, "Jennifer, are you telling me that you would have shot my mother and Duval?"
"I wouldn't have killed them…only disabled them long enough to do my job….and I did…and I was supposed to be back in London now to give a full report to Her Majesty's Secret Service."
Duval said, "That's supposed to make us feel better?"
"No, because it doesn't make me feel better but, if Liza and I have a shot, I know I have to be totally honest here."
Liza said, "So, you were supposed to leave without saying goodbye?"
"Yes, but I couldn't. I've been doing this job for fifteen years. I'm ready to leave it behind. I fell in love with you Liza, not just you but, your entire family. I needed to know if you felt the same way before I left for London."
"You know I do."
"Well, then would you like to drive me to the airport. I don't know when I'll be able to come back but, I promise I will and it will be as a private citizen when I do."
Liza turned to Paula, Duval and Jimmy and said, "Do I have the parents' blessing?"
Jimmy said, "We're not exactly shining examples of how to be honest in a relationship so it seems to me that since Jennifer came forth with all of this now, I think she's a keeper Liza."
Paula and Duval nodded in agreement. Liza said, "Well then, Jennifer, I'd be happy to give you a lift to the airport."
They exited and Jimmy saw Gracie looking rather sad. He walked up to her and said, "Gracie, how are you?"
Gracie smiled and said, "I'll be fine Grandpa. I've already had this conversation with Dad and Paula too."
"Well, enlighten your grandfather then. How are you Gracie?"
"You want to know how I am after losing Sam a second time."
"Yeah Gracie, I do. I just want to make sure my granddaughter is OK. You've had a lot of losses and disappointments in your short life."
"…not to mention kidnappings Grandpa."
"That too, so I ask again, how are you?"
"Well, I'm very sad about what happened to Sam. The idea that his own aunt had him killed and then regenerated is just evil on so many levels. He was a good person. I felt like I could be myself again when I was around him."
"I'm sensing a very big but coming though."
"Well, I really liked him a lot and when he helped take out those people at the gala that Mary hosted, I knew he was someone who could keep me safe. However, that stated, I'm not sure if that would have been enough. We had fun together but, I kind of felt like something was missing."
"Like what?"
"Like what I feel like when I see Barry. You know when Barry came up to me at Dad's and Paula's wedding, I felt like Cinderella on the dance floor with him. It was like my handsome prince showed up to the ball."
"Well Gracie, there's only one thing to do then."
"What's that Grandpa?"
"Keep on seeing him and see where it goes. He is a good person. He's keeping our family secret after all."
"I know Grandpa."
In another room, Paula's phone rang and she excused herself.
Mary came out of the kitchen and said, "Dinner is ready everyone! Let's eat drink and be merry without anything hanging over our heads."
Everyone started to walk toward the table when Paula came in not looking so well. Duval turned and said, "Paula, what is it? What's happened?"
Jimmy rolled his eyes and said, "Let me guess, Moira Murphy has escaped?"
"No."
"She made bail?"
"No."
"Oh no, are you telling me she's dead?"
"Yes, evidently she committed suicide…Fielding said she hanged herself in her jail cell. There'll be an investigation because she was on suicide watch. "
Helen then said, "Isn't this a good thing? She can't hurt anyone ever again."
Duval said, "True, but we'll never know for sure whom she was trading secrets with."

Two weeks later, Paula was in front of the Office of Personal Responsibility. The presiding officer said, "Agent McCaffrey, you have read the charges. You disobeyed your boss. We have the statement from Agent Bancroft but, it still does not excuse you not contacting Director Fielding once you had the location confirmed. Do you have anything to add?"
"No Sir. I acted as a wife and a mother. My decision making was somewhat impaired by that. However, I would like to let the record show that we were successful in our mission here. We got the evidence against Senator Murphy and a terrible facility was destroyed. With what Mary Goodwin obtained and with the statements of everyone who was there along with Kyle Graff, I believe in this case, the ends justified the means. If you feel that I'm no longer qualified to be in command, I accept that decision."
"Agent McCaffrey, we still believe that you're qualified to be in a position of command, however, it is in the best judgement of this hearing that Agent Pritchard no longer be in your division."
"I understand, how soon will Agent Pritchard be transferred? We're leaving for an extended vacation."
"It can wait until you both get back."

Everyone stood over the grave. Paula, Liza, Duval, Gracie, Jimmy, Mary, Helen and Wally all stood by as Liza said, "Thank you all for coming today. My father's ashes were in an urn that sat in my closet on a shelf. When he died, I knew I'd be coming to Seattle and I just wasn't sure what to do with the ashes so when Duval suggested that I lay him to rest with Madeleine, it just seemed like the right thing to do. So Duval and Gracie, thank you for allowing this. His ashes are buried above Madeleine's casket and we have a lovely headstone to put under her headstone.
Not a day goes by that I don't miss Dad. However, I believe he's looking down and watching over me every day and that gives me comfort. His death in essence led Mom and I to all of you so as my grandfather used to say, when God closes a door, there is always another door that opens somewhere else."
Jimmy took Liza's hand and said, "I'm glad he was your father. He sounds like a good guy and it sounds like he had some nice parents who were terrific grandparents. I'm kind of surprised they didn't have other kids."
"Oh they found each other kind of late in life Jimmy. Grandpa was a minister who for the first several years of his ministry took callings at different places in different states. He believed that part of spreading the word of God was to spread it in as many places as he could so he wasn't in places for very long to set down roots much less date anyone seriously. He had no regrets on doing that. He met lots of people with many different backgrounds and lived in several states before he settled in Oregon.
Grandma was an ER nurse and was pretty devoted to her career. Being a nurse in the ER, gives you an erratic schedule so it was difficult for her to find a steady guy who wanted to be with someone who worked those kinds of hours but, one night, the hospital chaplain on call was Grandpa. They met, struck up a conversation and when she got off of work early that morning, he asked her out to breakfast and the rest was history.
However, when they got married a year later, she was thirty-nine and he was forty-one. A year later, she gave birth to Dad but not without complications so they decided to be thankful for the one child they had and believed they'd have more grandchildren as Dad and his first wife Stacey talked of having three kids. That of course didn't happen and Stacey walked away.
Dad always told me it was all right though because he used to tell me that he was meant to be my father."
Jimmy smiled and said, "Yeah, he was and he's got my gratitude for it." They hugged each other while everyone else dispersed.
Paula said, "You're both right. I think because the Elliott's were both devoted to their careers and believed in helping people, it's why they showed me such support when I joined the FBI and basically told Scott he needed to be a supportive husband. They both had my gratitude for that."
Jimmy said, "Well, it sounds like the Elliott's were all right."
Paula started to walk toward the car and saw Duval walking in a different direction. "Duval? Is everything all right?"
"Yeah, I'm seeing Helen walking toward our mother's grave. I think I'll go visit Mom with her."
Paula leaned in and kissed him on the cheek and said, "Take as much time as you need."
Duval approached his mother's grave as Helen was standing there. "Is everything all right Helen?"
"Yeah, I just miss Mom. Duval, I wish she and Dad would have just told us everything long ago. We had a sister. Mom and Dad went to her grave every year to mourn and never gave us the opportunity to understand where so much sadness came from."
"I know but, Mom was never one to parade her feelings for the world. She was very secretive and only let us see what she wanted us to see. Perhaps if she hadn't kept everything bottled up, we all would have been happier. I know things at times were rough Helen but, I always try to remember the good times. Now that I know the full story, when I think of Christmas Day 1993, I can't help but laugh."
"I guess it is pretty funny. You and I being freaked out at the thought of our parents having sex."
Duval laughed and said, "Yeah, especially now that we're older and we certainly haven't slowed down."
Helen laughed and said, "Nope, not at all."
All of a sudden Jimmy's voice said, "Glad to hear that you two are all right with certain things."
They turned and looked and Jimmy got between the two of them and put his arms around both of them. "You know you two, I love Mary but not a day goes by where I don't think of your dear mother."
Duval said, "We know Dad."
Helen then said, "Hey Dad, you never told Duval and I what happened the day Mom died. All we got was your phone call telling us in a very shaky voice that Mom had died and when Duval asked you what happened, all you could barely say was that it was her heart."
Jimmy got quiet and said, "I didn't want to tell you the details because I was afraid you'd blame me."
Duval looked at him funny and said, "Why would you think we would blame you? We knew Mom wasn't in the best of health. We knew she took heart medication. What happened Dad?"
"Do you two promise not to be mad at me?"
Both Duval and Helen said, "Yes, we promise."
"OK, please know that when I woke up that morning, I didn't think for one second that it was the last day of Rosie's life and yet, I think Rosie knew."
FLASHBACK
Jimmy came walking in with breakfast and said, "Hey there Rosie! I brought you breakfast in bed. Your favorites, scrambled eggs with a Belgian waffle and some sausage. I have coffee here for you as well."
Rosie turned to him and said, "Jimmy what possessed you to do this for me?"
"You indicated that you were having a pain in your back yesterday so I decided to treat you to breakfast in bed for a change and that way you don't have to be on your feet cooking for me. Besides, I haven't done this for you since your birthday. Why should it just be special occasions to do something nice for your wife?"
Rosie smiled and said, "Jimmy, you're the best thing that ever happened to me."
Jimmy raised his eyebrows and said, "Are you sure about that Rosie?"
Rosie laughed a little and said, "Jimmy, stop second guessing yourself. I love you and you love me. That's all that's important. Granted our happily ever after took longer than other people's but don't think the past twenty years haven't been fun."
"Listen Rosie, I'm gonna go grocery shopping to help you out some more. Is there anything in particular you'd like me to get you?"
Rosie then looked at the window like she was looking out and beyond. Jimmy said, "Rosie? Are you all right?"
She turned and looked at him and said, "Yeah, I'm fine. I would like you to get some ice cream from the store."
"Sure, would you like me to get your favorite? Maple nut or Neapolitan?"
Rosie looked at him seriously and said, "Actually Jimmy, you always ask me what kind of ice cream I want. Why don't you get what you want?"
Jimmy smiled and said, "Ah Rosie, you know me. I like them all. So if you want your favorite, I'm totally OK with that."
"Jimmy, for once get what you want. I mean it."
Jimmy looked at her funny and said, "OK, I'll get something interesting." He started to turn away.
"Jimmy wait."
"Yeah?"
"Do I get a hug good-bye?"
Jimmy smiled and said, "Of course…always."
Jimmy walked over and moved the tray of food, sat next to her and she reached out to him and he held her in his arms. He was surprised that she seemed lighter. She whispered in his ear. "Thanks Jimmy."
He laid her down and he kissed her. He was almost out the door when Rosie said, "Jimmy?"
He turned and said, "Yes?"
"I never thanked you for saving my life."
He looked at her funny and said, "What do you mean Rosie? You told me that in counseling years ago. You told me that you were grateful that I shot my way into the bathroom and applied tourniquets to your wrists."
"I'm not talking about that time. I'm talking about when you told the doctor to take out my uterus to save me from the cancer. I could have missed so much with Duval and Helen if you hadn't told the doctor to do that. So thank you."
"Thank you Rosie, for being a good mother to those kids. God knows I couldn't have made it as a single dad."
Rosie smiled contently. "Go shopping and make sure you get ice cream that you like."
"OK Rosie, as you wish." He blew her a kiss and she blew him a kiss back.
Forty-five minutes later, Jimmy got home with the groceries. He put them away and walked up the stairs. He was surprised to see the food hadn't been touched. Rosie seemed to be sleeping.
"Rosie? Sweetie, I don't mean to be an ogre here but you should probably wake up. You'll be happy to know that I did get ice cream that I like. I think you'll like it as well. I got chocolate Neapolitan. It's comprised of white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate ice creams."
There was no response from Rosie. He walked closer and he said, "Rosie?" He tried to tap her shoulder and there was no response. "Rosie? Can you hear me?" There was no response. He picked up Rosie's wrist and he knew. He had worked enough crime scenes to know when someone was dead.
Jimmy's eyes started to tear up. "You knew didn't you? Oh God, the back ache, that can be a symptom of someone who's about to have a heart attack. It's why you told me the get the ice cream that I wanted. You looked out for me right up to the end." Jimmy completely broke down and cried as he dialed 9-1-1.

At the cemetery, Duval said, "Dad, why didn't you tell us that?"
Helen said, "Yeah Dad, it's really a very sweet story."
"You two aren't mad at me? I would have thought Duval would yell at me for not realizing that your mother needed to go see a doctor."
"Dad, maybe then I would have but, if it's one think I'm learning as I get older is that we can't Monday morning quarterback and beat ourselves up for something that we can't change. Given what you said about Mom, it sounds like she was ready to go. She clearly went on her terms. I can't fault her for that."
Helen said, "I can't fault her either. I won't fault you either as well. Was it good ice cream?"
"It was. After we buried her, I came here the next day with a lawn chair and I ate the entire container of ice cream and told her that I wished she was there with me to help me enjoy it."
Duval said, "Let's go home Dad."
"Sure Son but, let's go visit your sister Shannon first."
"Good idea."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
One month later, Duval was looking out to the ocean as Jimmy came up and said, "Well Son, are you glad to have that cast off?"
Duval smiled and said, "What do you think? It was nice to be able to get it off while we're all here in Hawaii. This island of Kaua'i is something else."
"Yeah, I can't believe Mary never told me she had a secluded place that overlooks the ocean here."
"You never asked Dad. I just think it's wonderful that she asked us all here."
"Yeah, there's nothing like a family honeymoon." They both laughed.
"Speaking of which, where is the bride and her maid of honor?"
"Mary and Paula went into town. Mary had a monthly check-up and she knew she could do it here since we've been here now for two weeks."
"Why didn't you go?"
"It was just a routine check-up. Nothing exciting like an ultrasound. Besides, I think they wanted to get a few last minute things for the wedding today."
"I can't believe you're doing this again Dad."
"You can't believe it? I'm getting a second chance at marriage and fatherhood. I'm finding it even more unbelievable."
At that moment, Helen popped her head outside and said, "Hey you two, the cake just arrived and Mary and Paula are pulling into the driveway. You two need to get dressed for the event."
Jimmy smiled and said, "Yes Helen. I can't believe the wedding boom that's been happening to our family."
Duval said, "I can't believe that you got that beautiful lady to marry you."
"Hey she originally turned me down."
"Really? She is smart."
Jimmy looked at him with disdain and said, "Hey Son, is that any way to talk as the Best Man?"
"I'm messing with you Dad. Call it a little payback from when you used to mess with Helen and I when we were kids."
"Did I really do that?"
"Yes Dad you did. So how did you get that lady to marry you?"
"I let her propose to me."
"Well that's an idea. It takes all of the anxiety off of the guy proposing."
"It did. She was very sweet. It was the morning that we were all coming to Hawaii and while we were packing, she just turned to me and said, 'James, why don't we get married while we're all in Kaua'i?' I turned to her and I said, 'Sure Honey, whatever makes you happy.' She then ran into my arms and she said, 'Hawaiian weddings are very beautiful' and I said, 'I can't wait.' So there you have it."
Duval smiled and said, "I'm really happy for you Dad."
"Thanks Son."
Ninety minutes later, they were all out standing by the ledge that overlooked the ocean. A local minister presided as Mary and Jimmy exchanged vows.
Mary wore a white off the shoulder dress with Hawaiian flowers going down the skirt. She wore a wreath of Hawaiian flowers around her head and she also wore a lei of white flowers around her neck.
Jimmy wore beige colored Capri style pants and a white Hawaiian shirt with a similar flower print to Mary's dress. He wore the same flowered lei that Mary wore.
Duval and Paula stood on either side of them. Paula wore a red Hawaiian dress with a Hawaiian flower print and Duval wore the same style of pants as Jimmy and wore a matching Hawaiian shirt to Paula's dress. They both wore matching leis around their necks.
Helen, Wally, Gracie, and Liza all looked on with happiness as Jimmy and Mary were pronounced husband and wife.
The minister said, "What God has joined together, let no one put asunder."
Jimmy said, "Let them try!" Everyone laughed as Jimmy dipped Mary and kissed her.
Mary said, "OK everyone let's eat, drink and be merry."
They posed for pictures in front of the cake and Mary said, "James, do you think it's very obvious that I'm pregnant in this dress?"
Jimmy looked and said, "No, not at all."
Mary smirked and said, "James, you're very experienced at telling a woman the right thing when she asks you about her weight."
"I'm going to plead the fifth on that one Mary."
"James, I have to make a confession…and I think I should say it in front of everyone."
"Why everyone?"
"I had an ultrasound today James."
Jimmy looked at her funny and said, "Mary why would you go without me?"
"Because the ultrasound confirmed my suspicion."
"What suspicion?"
"We're having twins, a boy and a girl."
Jimmy's jaw dropped as did everyone else's in the room. There was dead quiet and then Jimmy said, "Well all right! I get two for the price of one. Who could ask for anything more?" Jimmy smiled and started laughing. "Mary I hope you have a DVD of the ultrasound."
Mary smiled and said, "Yes I do. We can watch it later."
Everyone started congratulating Jimmy and Mary and then Paula noticed Duval looking in deep thought as he walked outside.
Paula walked out and said, "Duval? Are you all right?"
"Yeah, I'm all right."
"So why the sour face? Look Duval, I realize we've only been married for six weeks but I've known you long enough to know you're bothered by something. Are you upset by Mary's news? Come on Duval, you're not a little kid. Don't tell me you're jealous of the new siblings that are coming." She was being facetious by the last statement which made Duval smile.
He turned to her and took her in his arms and said, "No, I'm not jealous that I'm being replaced it's just…"
"What?"
"Paula, there's a couple of things that I didn't tell you about my alternate timeline."
"…and what would that be?"
"Right before we were gunned down, you presented me with an official pregnancy test result from your doctor."
Paula raised her eyes and said, "Really? What did it say?"
"It said positive. We were going to be parents."
"Well thank God that timeline didn't come to pass."
Duval looked at her funny and said, "What makes you say that? Is the thought of having my baby not pleasant?"
"It's not that. In that timeline, we were gunned down and we along with our baby were killed."
"Well that's true, it's just that I keep remembering what Madame Silvestri said to us when she did that reading that there would be marriage and children."
"There are children Duval. We have Liza and Gracie and…."
Duval looked at her questioningly and said, "…and what Paula?"
"…and the baby that's inside of me that I got confirmation on when I went to the doctor with Mary today when she found out she was having twins."
Duval's eyes got wide and all of a sudden he grabbed Paula and took her to ground. Paula said, "Well Duval, this was not quite the reaction I was anticipating."
"It's just that in the other timeline you told me and then we got shot."
"Well do you hear any gun shots ringing out?"
Duval laughed and said, "No."
All of a sudden they were met with Jimmy, Mary, Helen, Wally, Liza and Gracie. Jimmy said, "Duval, you know you and Paula have your own private room."
"We're having a baby Dad!"
Everyone started to congratulate them. Gracie said, "This is so awesome, Liza we're going to have a sister or a brother."
Liza said, "I'm hoping for a brother. I've already got a sister." She winked at Gracie.
Duval said, "I think we just want to make sure we have a healthy baby."
Paula said, "That's fine Duval, can we get up off of the ground now?"
Duval helped her up as everyone laughed.
Mary said, "So when are you due?"
"Well just four weeks after you are Mary. Clearly this was in the first week of marriage."
Jimmy leaned into Duval and whispered, "Wedding night?"
Duval whispered back, "Not necessarily…a broken wrist doesn't cause too many adjustments on things."
Paula said, "Thank you Duval and Jimmy."
Mary said, "Yes guys, we all heard you."
There was a silence and then Gracie said, "Why don't we all go back in and finish cutting the cake."
Liza said, "Good idea."
They went inside and they all remained for another week before they boarded a plane back to Seattle…back to reality.

Seven months later, Paula was sitting in her office with Fielding when she called Duval into the office.
Duval came in and said, "Uh oh, am I about to be taken out to the woodshed?"
Fielding said, "No Pritchard, in fact, quite the opposite."
Paula said, "Duval, I want to be the first to congratulate you on becoming the new Special Agent in Charge of this division."
Duval looked at her funny and said, "I don't understand. Paula what's going to happen to you?"
Fielding then said, "I'm going to leave and let McCaffrey explain it." He exited the office and closed the door.
"OK Paula what gives?"
"Duval, the reason you haven't been transferred to another division is because I discovered I was pregnant and I immediately recused myself from any field work. However, Fielding came in a couple of days ago and asked me how I wanted to handle coming back to work and where I thought you might be a good fit for a new assignment."
"I take it you didn't like the idea?"
"No Duval I didn't, and my conversation with my doctor this morning kind of cinched it."
Duval leaned in and said, "Paula what did the doctor say and why didn't you come to me before going to Fielding?"
"Because I wanted this to be a done deal before I told you anything and it now is."
"What's a done deal?"
"I've resigned as Special Agent in Charge and I'm officially changing my status to consultant effective after I give birth. In the meantime, I'm going home to be on bed rest because my blood pressure is elevated and I'm retaining water. These are signs of Toxemia."
Duval's eyes got wide and he said, "Oh my God Paula! How could you keep this from me until now?"
"I wanted to give Fielding my recommendation. Look Duval, speaking as one colleague to another, you should have been a shoe in for this job when Susan Adair left. Fielding was surprised that you didn't go for it. I understand why you didn't pursue it. That problem doesn't exist anymore because Senator Murphy is dead. You helped take her and her organization down. We all did. You were the one who showed initiative by taking those photos at the warehouse and by wiring yourself when you went to that building and then got yourself thrown off of it. Those things get you promoted and as for the Chihuly Glass Museum, well sometimes those things just happen….but, your record with Jimmy these past six months has been exemplary. I'm leaving today and you'll be in charge going forward."
Duval smiled and took her hand. "Paula, can you be happy just being a consultant?"
"Duval, I was much younger when I had Liza. For all of Scott's flaws in not understanding my career, there are things I could have done differently. I could have not volunteered to do as many stakeouts as I did in the early days. My marriage suffered and so did Liza. I have a second chance to give a lot more to our son and that's what I want to do. Besides, we're both older, this kid will run us ragged as it is."
Duval laughed slightly and said, "You're probably right. OK if you believe that this will make you happy then I'm all for it."
"Help me get my stuff together."
"OK, hey, if you need to be on bed rest, what about the baby shower this weekend? You know Mary is so close to delivering, maybe it should be postponed."
"Mary is insisting that we have the baby shower for both of us now. She's felt so bad that she's been so busy at Lookinglass getting everything done before she goes on maternity leave that we had to wait so long…besides she's not due for a week and she's very sure she won't be going into labor this weekend."
Duval raised his eyebrows and said, "Famous last words."

Paula was in the Barcalounger chair. She had been there for the entire baby shower since she had to be on bed rest.
Helen was helping Mary put her gifts into the car. Mary said to Helen, "All right Helen come clean with me. Me, Paula, Gracie and Liza all believe that you're pregnant. Are you?"
Helen got a look of disbelief on her face and said, "How did you all figure that out?"
"Isn't it obvious? When Paula and I opened our seventh gifts, they were from you. The old wives tale says that the person whose package is the seventh package opened is the next one to have a baby. When Paula and I looked at each other and realized we were both opening up our gifts from you, we looked at you and said 'Helen's the next one having a baby.' Your face turned bright red and you smiled a knowing smile. So confirm please. Are you having a baby? Yes or no."
"Well, dear stepmother, if those are the only two choices then my choice is yes."
Mary smiled and said, "Ah, you called me stepmother. How sweet. I know that James will be thrilled to have another grandchild…is it OK to tell him?"
"Well, Wally and I were going to come over and make a big announcement but since the cat's out of the bag, I guess you can tell Dad or better yet, tell him to call me. Just tell him that I've got something to tell him."
"Sounds good. We're having a regular baby boom in the family. I wonder who will be next?"
"Oh let's not rush anyone." They both laughed and hugged each other. Mary then got into her car and drove off."

A few blocks away, Duval and Barry were sitting outside of a Starbuck's having coffee. Duval said, "I really appreciate you wanting to hang out with me Barry."
"It's been fun and it's kind of nice to know that you want to hang out with me since I'm dating Gracie and all."
"Hey, I got a good feeling about you Son."
Barry smiled and said, "I'm a little curious though. How come Jimmy didn't show up to hang out with us?"
"Oh Jimmy had something else to do this afternoon. It's unfortunate that it coincided with the baby shower but, I'm sure he'll enjoy looking at all of the stuff Mary brings home."
"I see. Was it that thing that you'd have to kill me for if I spoke it out loud?"
"You catch on quick Barry. I like that. It's also the sign of a good cop. Do you want to make detective some day?"
"That's the plan. It was one of the things I used to talk about with George Gadwell. You see, my father was actually a criminal. His crimes were more the White Collar Crime type but, his embezzlement's cost a lot to my mother and me. He died in prison from cancer. I'm sorry to say that my mother and I didn't grieve much."
"Where's your mother now?"
"She was killed by a drunk driver not long after I graduated high school so I'm an orphan. It's nice to be with someone who's got such a nice close knit family."
"Well, it wasn't always like this."
"It seems that way now. That's the important thing."
"Yes, it is. Well, I think everyone has probably left the house so we should get back there."
"Sounds good."

Jimmy was in his tank. It was so nice to have the original tank rebuilt. The other one was still in the garage completely full and ready to use in a pinch. While he didn't like the compact size tank, he was glad it was there in reserve. Being in the tank was an unusual experience. It was the ultimate relaxing bath experience. While he knew one day he'd be able to give it up completely thanks to Liza starting the blood transfusions again, he also knew that he'd sort of miss the regeneration process. He often wondered if this feeling was similar to what a baby feels inside of the mother's womb.
Suddenly he heard knocking on the glass. He opened his eyes and it was his beautiful Mary smiling and waving. He smiled and waved back. Mary said, "I'm so sorry James that our double baby shower coincided with your regenerating but, I've got some lovely stuff in the car that you can help bring in. Also make sure you call Helen once you're out. She's got something to tell you."
Jimmy gave her the thumbs up signal. All was well when all of a sudden a hand grabbed Mary's shoulder and yanked her back. Mary let out a scream. Before Jimmy could make for the top of the tank, a woman was at the controls and she hit the off button. Jimmy started to drown but not before Mary grabbed a gun in a hidden place and she shot the glass breaking it so that all of the fluid would come out and Jimmy came out with the glass and the fluid like he'd had so long ago when Otto pulled the plug on Arthur.
The woman was very fast. As Mary had fired the last shot, the woman was on her and grabbing the gun away. She yelled "Mary Goodwin! You can't make anything easy can you?"
Jimmy was coming out of his daze and yelled, "Moira Murphy! I'd recognize those eyes of yours anywhere!" Moira clearly was a woman who'd had the pre-disposition because she now looked completely different.
"You were supposed to drown in there Jimmy Pritchard!"
She had a hold of Mary's arm and she yelled, "What do you want Bitch!"
"What do you think? I can't control you or Jimmy but I sure as hell can control your babies! And that's what I intend to do!" She pulled out a knife and said, "You're both going to die but I'm going to cut those babies out of you Mary Goodwin!"
Jimmy yelled, "The hell you will!"
Moira was momentarily distracted and Mary leaned down and bit Moira's wrist and then threw one leg under hers to cause her to fall. Jimmy ran over and grabbed the knife and yelled, "Mary get the hell out of here!"
He started to run her out of the house when Moira grabbed his foot. He fell and kicked Moira in the face and she let go. He again yelled "Mary get out of here!"
Mary started to run to the door when she saw Jimmy look at Moira and say, "You want me Bitch?! Come and get me!" With that he jumped up to the second level with his super human strength. Moira jumped up after him.
Mary started to go for the door but she knew even with being nine months pregnant, she needed to help Jimmy. She ran to the garage.

Paula was still sitting in the Barcalounger chair when she said to Gracie, Liza and Helen, "Are you three sure you don't need any help cleaning up? I've been taking it easy all day every day for the past week. My blood pressure is doing rather well."
Liza said, "Sorry Mom, you need to stay relaxing. Besides, we're not doing anything difficult here. For that matter, Helen, you should be relaxing."
Gracie said, "Yeah Aunt Helen, you need to relax too. This is so awesome. Wait until Dad and Grandpa find out there's going to be another grandchild."
Paula said, "That would be a niece or nephew for Duval. Do you know Helen?"
Helen smiled and said, "No, we don't know yet. We haven't had an ultrasound yet. I'm just thrilled that it happened. I asked the doctor about having a baby after giving Duval part of my liver and he told me that after a certain amount of time, it would be fine. I wasn't sure it was plausible but Paula, you inspired me to try. Wally was an only child and he really wanted to try and I have to admit so did I. We're very happy. I'm kind of surprised Dad hasn't called. Mary should have gotten home by now."
Paula then said, "Well, part of the deal of being pregnant is that you need to use the bathroom more often so I'm going to get up."
Paula got up from the living room and started to go down the hallway as Helen, Liza and Gracie were still in the kitchen.
All of a sudden the place erupted in gunfire. Paula was close to the bathroom and she yelled, "Get down and get out of the house!"
Liza and Gracie went down immediately and Helen got hit in the shoulder blade as she went down. Liza looked and saw that the sliding glass door was completely blown out and she said, "Come on, we've got to crawl outside and get behind that brick wall in the garden."
Gracie said, "Liza, you and Aunt Helen go first. Take care of her."
"Gracie, you're coming with us."
"I know but, you're the doctor in training and Aunt Helen needs medical attention. You two go first."
Liza nodded and said, "You're right."
Liza and Helen stomach crawled out the door. Gracie was about to follow when more bullets started to fly. She remained in the kitchen behind the counter. She then reached up to a drawer and grabbed a hidden gun out of there.
Meanwhile Paula who had been in the hallway ran into the bathroom and dove into the old fashioned cast iron bath tub. She whispered under her breath, "Thank you Duval for loving antiques."

Duval and Barry were in the car coming back to the house when they saw Duval's house under siege with men in black firing semi-automatic guns into the house. They looked at each other and Barry immediately called 9-1-1.
"This is Officer Barry Allen badge number 1154, we have a house under bullet fire and request back up at the following address."
He gave the address just as the bullets stopped firing. They saw one man go walking into the house. Duval said, "We need to secure this perimeter. We've got to take those bastards out."
"Understood Sir."
Gracie was sitting behind the counter with the gun clutched in her hand. She was going to start to get up to see where Paula was when she heard someone else walking into the house. She took very shallow breaths to keep from being heard.
Outside Liza was trying to ascertain Helen's wounds. "I feel like I should go back in."
Helen said, "Liza, I think your mother would want you stay out here."
"At the very least I need to get something for the bleeding on you. Are you feeling any cramping at all?"
"No."
"OK that's a good sign. This wound is a long way from your baby and it's still a ways from your heart."
"You're going to make a good doctor Liza. Your bedside manner is truly a positive one."
"Thanks, the bullets have stopped, I should go back in."
All of a sudden there was gunfire again. Helen said, "Not so fast Sweetie. Stay with me a little longer."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Outside in the front, Duval and Barry were in a shootout. There were three men in black and Duval and Barry were able to surprise them and take them out.
In the house Paula started to turn toward the wall when a voice said, "Hello Paula."
Paula's eyes got wide and she turned and there was her old boyfriend Chaz Kirk standing there with a gun. "Well Chaz, this is certainly a new look for you. Why are you doing this?"
"My client, Moira Murphy had an assignment for me. Since all of you adults are complete pains in the ass to deal with, she decided to go with just getting the babies."
Paula raised her eyes and said, "Excuse me?"
"Oh yes, Moira is still very much alive. I got her remains from the jail and something that never came up in conversation with you but she does have the predisposition just like Gracie. It was perfect. She ended up being the perfect specimen and she is perfect. She's extracting Mary Goodwin's babies as we speak."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean she's probably killed Jimmy Pritchard and Mary Goodwin and has done a post-mortem C-section." He then took out a knife and said, "….like I'm going to do to you Paula."
Paula knew she had to think fast. "Chaz, come on, you're not a killer. Why are you doing this for that bitch?"
"On the contrary Paula. I am actually a killer. I didn't kill my wife Renee but that doesn't mean that I've never helped make Senator Murphy's other problems go away."
He started to walk toward her when Paula said, "Chaz, please don't do this. I'd like to believe that I meant something to you at one time. We actually spoke of marriage at one point."
"Yeah, I think that was more you Paula." He lifted the gun toward her forehead when Paula heard a gun go off.
Chaz turned around and It was Gracie holding a gun on him. She had fired into the ceiling. "You bastards! First you killed my mother, then you killed my grandfather, then you killed my friend Sam, you've kidnapped us, experimented on me, shot my father and Paula. You're not taking Paula and my little brother away. I for one am sick of all of this and it's going to end right now! Put your gun and knife down asshole!"
Chaz dropped the knife and then said, "I don't think you have it in you to pull that trigger Gracie. What do you say, we count to three and let's see which one of us can pull the trigger."
Gracie had tears coming out of her eyes and she could feel her hand starting to shake.
Chaz said, "One…" A shot rang out and 'One' was all he got to say. Gracie's eyes got wide.
In the main part of the house Duval was running in and he heard the shot and he just fell to the floor doubled over as he yelled "No!"
In the bathroom, Chaz fell forward and Gracie saw Paula holding a gun. She had been reaching for the gun taped to the backside of the bathtub when Chaz came in. Gracie had created the perfect distraction.
Gracie started to cry as she ran to Paula. "Hey there, Gracie, it's OK. It's OK. You did good." Paula held Gracie in her arms as Duval came in with his gun drawn.
Duval saw the dead body on the floor and got a look of relief. They could hear the first responders arriving. He then looked at Gracie and saw that she still had a gun in her hand and he ran over to both of them. He leaned down and kissed Paula's forehead and then he put his hand on Gracie's shoulder. She turned and said, "Dad! Why does this keep happening?"
"I don't know Gracie but you're all right. Here let me take the gun." He took the gun and then he looked at Chaz's body and he mouthed the words to Paula, "Did she?"
Paula nodded negatively. "I killed him Duval. Gracie saved me though. Gracie, you're my personal hero today."
At that moment Liza came running in. "Mom! Thank God! Duval, the paramedics are with Helen. She got shot but I think she and the baby will be OK."
Duval raised his eyebrows and said, "Baby?"
Paula said, "Yeah, she was waiting to tell us but we all figured out. Duval you need to call Jimmy, Chaz said Moira Murphy is going after them."
Duval finished the sentence and said, "Oh my God! She was regenerated. Damn! That woman is like a hemorrhoid that just won't go away! I'll call Dad."
All of a sudden, Paula let out a loud moan. Liza said, "Mom what is it?"
Paula let out more sounds of pain. She then reached down under her skirt and her hand came out with blood on it. "Oh no, I haven't quite hit thirty-seven weeks yet. This isn't good."
Liza said, "I'm getting the paramedics and I'm going to tell them we need another ambulance."
Duval said, "Paula, you're still pretty far along. It'll be all right."
"Duval, make sure the doctor does everything in his power to save our son."
"I'll make sure you're both saved."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
At Mary's house, Jimmy and Moira were on the second level fighting it out. Moira said, "Didn't your mother ever tell you not to hit girls."
"Yeah she did. You're not a girl Moira! You're a psychopathic bitch and a half!"
He hit her and sent her flying onto the balcony that overlooked the lower level of the house. It was the same place where Mary and Jimmy admitted initially that they had feelings for one another.
Moira got up and said, "You know Jimmy, you have no clothes on, this could be considered foreplay for people like you and me."
"Don't flatter yourself Moira!"
Mary down below was completely unnoticed as she had run into the garage and wheeled the portable tank out. It was amazing to her that James and Alexa initially shared this tank.
She looked up above and saw that James was starting to get tired and Moira just kept coming at him. She knew there'd be just one chance at this. She moved that tank below where they were fighting. She plugged it in and turned it on. It typically took a little while to get to optimum levels for regeneration but it was still deadly to someone whose DNA didn't match what was programmed in the tank.
She got the tank underneath where they were and then she made her way up to where they were. She had a baseball bat in her hand. Moira had gotten the upper hand on Jimmy and was starting to strangle him. She came up behind with that baseball bat and let her have it on top of the head.
A normal person would have landed on the floor but Moira just stopped strangling Jimmy and turned and looked at her dazed. Jimmy was taking a deep breath when he looked at Mary. She gave a sideways nod to let him know what was down below. He saw the tank plugged in and turned on.
Moira looked at Mary with venom in her eyes and said, "You should have fled the house when Jimmy told you to Mary Goodwin! Now I'm going to snap that pretty little neck of yours."
All of a sudden she felt herself being lifted up as Jimmy said, "I don't think so Bitch!" She started to fight as Jimmy threw her over and into the tank she landed.
It was not pretty. Jimmy and Mary looked down and saw Moira scream in sheer agony. It was Jimmy's DNA she was dropped in. They watched as her flesh started to melt off of her and her bones cracked under the fluid. She was helpless. The process was happening so fast that she couldn't lift herself up. The last thing they heard her scream was, "I'm melting!"
Everything melted and then it dissolved. It was like the tank had been disinfected. They were silent for a moment and then Jimmy said, "I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch 'The Wizard of Oz' ever again. Somehow watching the wicked witch of the west melting will remind me of Moira."
"We can just skip that scene."
"I suppose. Are you all right Mary?"
Mary was silent for a moment and then said, "I'm fine except for one thing."
"What's that?"
"My water just broke." They both looked down and there was a puddle by Mary's feet and then Mary said, "Yeaowww! That's the worst pain I've had all day."
Jimmy's eyes got wide and he said, "What do you mean all day?"
"I've been having back pain since about nine this morning. I've been blowing it off as just pregnancy back pain. Now, given that my water just broke, I think that was early labor. James, I think you need to shower very fast and get some clothes on. Then take me to the hospital."
"I've got a better idea. I take a very fast shower and you call for the helicopter."
"Even better."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
At the hospital, Jimmy started to walk toward the room where Mary was when he saw Duval and said, "Duval? What are you doing here?"
Duval said, "Dad? Thank God you're here. Where's Mary?"
"She's here. Her water broke."
"Dad, I wanted to call you. We were attacked."
"What? We were also attacked. Is everyone all right?"
"Not exactly, Helen got shot."
"My baby girl got shot? Where is she?"
"They say she'll recover but Dad, she's also pregnant."
"Well normally, I'd be jumping up and down for joy here but Mary's in the labor room. Is everyone else all right?"
"No, Dad Paula's here?"
"Was Paula shot?"
"No, but I think what happened to Mom with Shannon is happening to Paula. They're getting her ready for a C-section. The baby is in the breech position and in fetal distress. Paula's blood pressure is going through the roof."
All of a sudden, they heard a voice, "James!"
Jimmy poked his head in and said, "Yeah Mary, I'll be right there."
"James! I'm at ten centimeters!"
"OK Honey!"
"Dad you've got to get in there. I have to get back in to Paula. I just came out here to let Liza know and she went to find Gracie as she's with Helen and Wally."
Jimmy grabbed Duval's shoulder and said, "Duval, I'm not sure I can do this."
Duval's eyebrows went up and he said, "Do what Dad?"
"Go into that delivery room."
"Dad, how can you say that?"
"Duval, when you and Helen were born, fathers in the delivery room was just starting to become a thing. I was in the waiting room all three times."
"Well, now you've got a second chance at fatherhood and you've got a chance to see something amazing. Get in there."
They then heard Mary yell, "James! Where are you?"
Duval gave Jimmy a knowing look and Jimmy ran into the room Duval turned and ran to the other room with Paula.
Paula had IV's going into her and she said to Duval, "They're going to put me under. My blood pressure is too critical. Duval, if they have to make any decisions…"
Duval leaned down and said, "Hey, Sweetie, the decision has been made. They're going to do a C-section, we are long past the days where we choose between saving the mother and saving the baby. It's game on. Jimmy are Mary are here too."
"They are?"
"Yeah, Mary's in labor and about to deliver."
The doctor then came in and said, "Mr. Pritchard, we're going to take her in now. You can come in and sit with her though."
"I'll be there." He looked down and said, "Paula, I'm here and I'll be here when you wake up."
"It's too soon."
"It's soon enough."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
In the delivery room, Jimmy sat by Mary's side and said, "You're doing great Mary!"
She pushed and the said, "James, stop saying that."
"What do you want me to say?"
"Please say nothing!" She let out a yell.
The doctor said, "Mary, you're doing great. I've got the head. Give me another push."
Mary grunted and out came the first baby who started to cry. "Congratulations, you have a son."
Mary and Jimmy looked at each other and smiled but then Mary let out another yell.
The doctor said, "OK Mary, give me another push." Mary did and the doctor said, "Here comes the head. Two more pushes on this one and she'll be out."
Mary did as she was told and out came their daughter who started crying almost immediately as well. Jimmy had tears coming out of his eyes. He looked at Mary and she was crying as well. He leaned in and kissed her. Jimmy said, "I can't believe men were prevented from being in here for so long."
"Well, I'm glad you were here with me James."
"You know we still haven't figured out the names completely."
"We'll talk after I rest."
"Not a problem."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
In the operating room, Paula was out and the doctors did the C-section. The doctor pulled the baby out and said, "Hey Duval, take a look at your son!" The baby was crying.
Duval had tears coming down his eyes. "Is he all right?"
"We'll let you know shortly. He's crying his lungs out and that's a good sign."
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Paula and Mary got to be in the same room but there was a curtain separating them as Paula woke up to see Duval holding their son. "Hey there Ethan. Say hello to your mother."
Paula smiled and looked relieved. Paula took the baby in her arms and said, "Hello Ethan James Pritchard. You're named after your two grandfathers." She then saw how tiny he was and said, "Duval, he's so tiny. Is he all right?"
"He's fine. He weighed in at five pounds one ounce. He made the cut for not being in an incubator. He's breathing fine on his own. All of his vitals are good. They even gave him a bottle before he came in here and he took it without any problems."
Paula looked relieved and said, "Thank God. I guess Madame Silvestri was right after all. Didn't she say there'd be a battle and a marriage and children?"
"Yeah, she did say that but, I think between Ethan, Gracie and Liza we're done."
"Yeah I think we are too."
All of a sudden the curtain was pulled and Jimmy poked his head in and said, "Is it OK to converse now? Ethan should meet his grandparents and his new aunt and uncle."
Duval rolled his eyes and said, "Oh jeez Dad. I hadn't even thought about that."
"Didn't I tell you Son that Weird is the Pritchard family's middle name?"
Duval laughed and said, "Yeah you did."
Paula said, "By the way, is Helen OK?"
Then a voice said, "Yes, I am," came a voice from across the room. Wally emerged from the curtain across the room and pulled it back. There was Helen.
Wally said, "The doctor removed the bullet. By the grace of God it did not hit any vitals and the baby is fine. We're due in six months….and the ultrasound that we had showed that it's a girl!"
Jimmy said, "This is so cool. Do you know what you'll name her?"
Helen said, "Yes, we're going to name her after Mom and our lost sister. Her name will be Kathleen Shannon Luskin. We're going to call her Katie."
Jimmy smiled and said, "Your mother would be thrilled as am I."
Mary then said, "James, will you pull the curtain back completely?" Jimmy pulled the curtain back and there was Mary smiled with both babies in her arms. She said, "Say hello to Henry Benjamin Otto Pritchard. And Emily Alice Mary Pritchard."
Duval said, "Now I knew about the boy's name, how did you convince Dad not to have Mary as your little girl's first name?"
"My full name is Mary Emily Alice Goodwin. I told James that there were enough Mary's in the world and I've always liked the name Emily for a girl anyway."
"Sounds fair."
All of a sudden, in walked Gracie and Barry Allen. Barry was carrying teddy bears and flowers. Barry said, "Hi Everyone!" He walked over to Helen and said, "Helen here are some lovely red and white carnations for you. I hope you get well very soon." He then walked over to Paula and handed her a pastel green teddy bear and said, "Congratulations on your new little boy."
Paula smiled and said, "Thank you Barry but why do I get the green one?"
Barry looked a little embarrassed and said, "I'm sorry, they only had one blue on left…"
"It's OK Barry, I'm messing with you. I think this green teddy bear is very cute. Thank you."
Barry smiled sheepishly and said, "You're welcome…and congratulations Mary and Jimmy, this pastel blue teddy bear is for your son and the pastel pink one is for your daughter."
Mary said, "Well thank you Barry. It was very thoughtful."
Paula then said, "By the way, where's Liza?"
"Right here Mom!" Liza was standing in the doorway with Jennifer standing next to her. Jennifer looked about five months pregnant give or take. Everyone raised their eyebrows. "I'm sorry I was late coming in here but while you were in recovery, Jennifer texted me and told me she was at the airport. I called her back and told her the situation and she immediately got a cab and came here. I was outside waiting for her."
Jennifer then smiled and said, "Well hi everyone! Liza debriefed me on everything. I'm sorry I wasn't here to help when the shooting started."
Jimmy said, "Ah Jennifer, pardon my asking but are you pregnant?"
Jennifer smiled and said, "Yes I am Jimmy but one thing at a time. I want you all to know that everything in China has been buried. It's why MI-6 called me back. The intel that you got Mary on that jump drive was priceless. We knew exactly who to target in China. I led the team of operatives and we were able to hack everything and destroy it. It culminated with me taking the brains behind the operation out and as I walked out of the building that was housing all of the equipment, one of the guards stopped me and asked me for my credentials for being there and I said 'Sure, it's right here.' I then took out my cell phone and I hit a button and the entire building went up. My team took out all of the other guards and we got out of China."
Jimmy said, "That's amazing so we no longer have to worry about anything."
"Your phone should be ringing any second Jimmy."
Right on cue, Jimmy's phone rang and he answered it and put it on speaker phone. "Hello?"
"James Pritchard?"
"Yes?"
"Please hold for the president."
Everyone looked shocked. Then a voice said, "Mr. Pritchard?"
"Yes Mr. President?"
"I'm calling to let you know that the problem in China is now neutralized. I was also briefed that your son's house was attacked earlier today by Senator Murphy's operatives. I'm glad the threat was able to be neutralized. However, this proves that Moira Murphy is still…"
"Mr. President, Moira Murphy won't be bothering anyone anymore."
"What makes you so sure?"
"She showed up at our house today."
"I see, do I need to send any…"
"No Sir….the problem has been dissolved."
Everyone's jaw dropped.
"You mean the problem is resolved."
"Yes and the problem is also dissolved."
There was a silence and then the president said, "I see. James Pritchard, you and your family have done this country a huge service. Because of this, I've done you a service. I have made sure your identity is fool proof. We have a paper trail for you going back to the eighties. Nobody should question anything about you ever again."
"Thank you Mr. President."
The line was disconnected.
Jimmy then said, "Well now that all of that is finally behind us, Jennifer tell us about this pregnancy."
Liza said, "Yes, explain it to them."
"Well, after I finished taking care of everything in China. I told my superiors that I wanted out. They didn't want me out. They told me I was too valuable with too much information to become a private citizen so I did the one thing they didn't bank on. I went to a clinic and I got pregnant. Pregnancy is one of those conditions you can't fault a woman for leaving, besides I've been thinking about this for quite a while…since I met Liza and all of you. So I told them that I'm out. They warned me that potential enemies could show up and try to extract information from me. I told them that if anyone does show up, they can have a bloody good try at extracting information but it will never happen. I would commit suicide if necessary."
Liza's eyes got wide and she said, "You wouldn't."
"Yes, I would but don't worry Liza. That's like last resort scenario. There are many things I can do first to avoid that."
Paula said, "Well Congratulations Jennifer. Do you know what you're having?"
"Yes, I'm having a girl. I'm going to call her Michelle Julia Bancroft. Julia is my grandmother's name and Michelle is my middle name as well as Liza's and Paula's middle name. I thought she should be named after three ladies she'll know that she can always count on."
Liza said, "Does that mean you're here for good?"
"Yes, Liza it does. In fact, I've bought my own bar out in Snohomish. I'm going specialize in having jazz music there. It should be fun."
Duval said, "Well now that everyone seems to be settled and we don't need to worry about a paper trail, what are we going to tell these babies when they're old enough to understand?"
Jimmy said, "As insane as this is going to sound, I think we should tell them all the truth. If it's one thing we've all learned, it's that covering up the truth isn't a good idea."
"Yeah but…"
"Duval, we'll just have a find a way to make them understand that in the house they address us all one way and out in public it's another way. We'll make a game out of it."

TEN YEARS LATER
Thanksgiving Day arrived and Mary yelled, "Honey! I need your help taking the turkey out of the oven."
Jimmy called back, "OK Hon! Give me a minute, a big play in the game is coming."
Mary poked her head out of the kitchen area and said, "James! I need your help now! Everyone's going to be arriving in minutes and I need you to carve this bird after its out of the oven and I've gotten the juice and the stuffing out. Turn up the TV and get in here."
Henry was sitting next to Jimmy and said, "Dad, you better go. You know how Mom gets stressed over these family dinners."
Jimmy smiled and patted Henry's head and said, "Yeah, I know…and we wouldn't give up these dinners for anything would we?"
"Not me! I love Thanksgiving dinner. It's the only day of the year where we get a whole turkey."
"Yeah, it wouldn't be the same any other time of the year."
At that moment, a little girl put her around the corner and said, "Dad! Mom says that if you don't come in here right now, you're in trouble."
Jimmy raised his eyebrows and said, "Well Emily, I guess I better come in. Henry, turn up the volume on the game."
Jimmy came into the kitchen and Mary was standing by the oven and she was giving him the look. Jimmy walked over to her and said, "Sorry Hon for my lateness. How can I make it up to you?"
Mary smiled and came up to him and as it appeared she was going kiss him but then whispered, "Take the turkey out of the oven!"
"Of course…as you wish my love!" He took the twenty-one pound turkey out of the oven and then said, "Is there anything else?"
"You can carve it once everyone gets here. In the meantime I'll start making the gravy."
Jimmy walked back into the living room and Henry said, "Are you in big trouble with Mom?"
"No, not at all Henry. What did I miss?"
"The Cowboys messed up."
"Really? Well perhaps our Seahawks will pull this game out."
"I hope so."
At that moment the doorbell rang and Emily yelled, "I'll get it!"
Emily opened the door and they could hear her yell "Ethan!"
"Hi Emily."
They heard Duval say, "Happy Thanksgiving Emily!"
Paula said, "Happy Thanksgiving…Emily do you want to help me bring in some pies that I made?"
"Oh yes! Mom! I'm going to help Paula!"
Mary yelled, "That's fine!"
They came in and Emily said, "Mom, Paula brought the usual pies!"
Paula smiled and said, "Yes, we have three pumpkin pies, two pecan pies and two chocolate walnut pies."
Mary smiled back and said, "Perfect….James, come in here now and start cutting up the bird. I've got the juice out of the pan for gravy and the stuffing has been scooped out as well."
Paula said, "Anything I can do?"
"Yes, the mashed potatoes and the cranberry sauce."
"You've got it Mary. Is everyone else bringing their usual stuff?"
"Oh yeah!"
At that moment, the doorbell rang and Duval answered the door. He was met by Helen, Wally and their daughter Katie. They all smiled at each other and Helen said, "Happy Thanksgiving you wonderful brother." She gave him a hug.
"…and the same to you Helen. Hey there Wally, have you got the usual contraband?"
Katie said, "Of course he does Uncle Duval. In fact, I helped Mom with the deviled eggs this year."
"Really? What did you do?"
"I sprinkled the paprika on them."
"Aha, that's the best part of the eggs you know."
The little girl smiled and was very proud of herself. Wally smiled and said, "Hey Duval, is the game on?"
"It sure is."
"How are the Seahawks doing against the Cowboys?"
"Anything's possible."
"Really? If the Seahawks can pull this out, that would certainly help them."
"One can hope."
They all came in and Mary, Jimmy and Paula all hugged everyone. Paula said, "Well we're all here, where are the other kids?"
At that moment the doorbell rang, Henry ran and opened it. He yelled, "It's Gracie and Barry and Maddie and Liza and Jennifer and Michelle and Scotty!"
Paula came out of the kitchen and said, "Did you all come in the same car?"
Gracie said, "Yeah, we got a new SUV and I told Liza and Jennifer that there was plenty of room so why not carpool since we don't live that far from each other."
"That's great…did you all bring what you were supposed to bring?"
Gracie said, "Of course, the fruit salad and the sweet potatoes, you just need to warm them up and add the marshmallows." She produced a bag of miniature marshmallows from her bag.
Liza said, "And I brought the famous green bean casserole and the veggies and dip and…"
Jennifer said, "I brought homemade dinner rolls that is the famous recipe that my Grandma Julia used to use. You know I really love this holiday. In England we only have Christmas. This holiday season going a full month is wonderful."
Duval came up and said, "Hello, hello! How are all of my grown up kids doing? How are my grandkids doing? Does Grandpa get a hug?"
Maddie said, "Yeah Grandpa." Maddie, Michelle and Scotty ran into his arms.
Gracie then hugged him and said, "We're fine Dad, in fact, we have some great news."
Jimmy came out and said, "What's this great news?"
Barry smiled and said, "I made detective."
Everyone got very excited and Jimmy and Duval shook his hand and said, "Congratulations Barry!"
"I'm not the only one who's got news though?"
Gracie smiled and said, "I am now an official court appointed psychologist. I will be consulted on cases for examination and I will also give testimony in court cases."
Duval was beaming with pride and said, "Well Congratulations Dr. Gracie Allen."
"Ah actually Dad, it's Dr. Gracie Pritchard-Allen. You'd be amazed at how many people like to say 'Goodnight Gracie' to me when I say my name is Gracie Allen."
Duval laughed slightly and said, "I guess that's a tribute to Gracie Allen and George Burns since they've both been gone for decades now."
"Tell me about it."
Barry said, "Hey Hon, at least you don't have to be called Officer Flash."
Gracie smirked and said, "Sweetie, The Flash is a very cool Super Hero and Gracie Allen made her living by being the funny ditzy sidekick of George Burns. She was wonderful and funny but, I hope nobody thinks I'm a ditz when I have to testify."
"Not a chance Honey!"
Jimmy said, "Pardon me for being old fashioned Gracie but can you juggle that with having a four year old little girl? Not that I'm not proud of you…"
"Grandpa, it's not as many hours as you might think. I also have some control over which cases I'll take."
Mary came out and said, "Well this is great then! Now how about we get all of the food on the table and let's eat!"
As they were sitting down, Paula said to Jennifer, "So how is the bar going these days?"
"Oh it's going great! I've booked some awesome new jazz bands and I'll be playing piano with some of them. I tell you, I never thought I could be this happy leaving MI-6 but I am." She looked at Liza and took her hand and said, "We are."
Liza said, "Yeah, we are. By the way, my research is paying off. I'm very close to getting approval for a new treatment for cancer. Our experimental trials are going well."
Everyone, was amazed. Jimmy said, "Dr. Liza Elliott why didn't you say so when you first came in the door?"
"There's just so much happening."
Jennifer said, "Yes, there is…Liza, don't you think you should say something?"
"You think so?"
"Come on, everyone's here, it's a happy occasion, make it happier."
Paula said, "What's she talking about Liza?"
"I'm pregnant again."
Everyone got excited, Paula said, "Liza, I'm so happy, I thought after you had Scotty, you'd be done."
"Well, since everything worked out, it's only fair to tell you all that when Jennifer got pregnant from the clinic in England, there were three donations from the same donor. He was good looking, he'd studied at MIT and he was also an avid piano player. So that's why Jennifer chose him. She put a hold on the other two donations in hopes that I would want them. I was thrilled when I had Scotty here." She patted her son on the head. "However, there was still one more and it didn't feel right to not have that one. So I again went back to England and I was thrilled that it worked…again."
Jimmy then said, "So all of your kids are biologically related."
"Yes, Jimmy. I can tell you that this one is a girl."
Paula smiled and said, "Another granddaughter, which will be so much fun."
"Yeah Mom and I'm going to name her kind of after you."
"Kind of?"
"I'm going to call her Pauline McCaffrey Elliott. As a little girl, I'm going to call her Polly."
Paula raised her eyebrows and said, "Polly? Oh Liza, don't do that. She'll be inundated with the Polly want a cracker jokes."
"If she wants to change it when she's in school to Pauline, that's fine but I want to call her Polly at home."
"OK, she may hate it but we'll see."
Across the table as they were getting the last of the food on the table, Barry was nudging Gracie and Gracie said, "Actually, I'm pregnant again too."
There were smiles and cheers across the table. Duval walked up and hugged Gracie and said, "How long have you known this?"
"A good month Dad but we wanted to wait to make sure nothing happened and I had an ultrasound the other day."
"Really? Is everything OK?"
"Yes it is. In fact, you're going to have a grandson. We're going to name him after Sam. After all, Sam saved us all. He'll be Samuel Pritchard Allen."
Duval smiled and said, "Well that's fabulous."
Jimmy came over and hugged Gracie and said, "This is the best Thanksgiving ever. Not only am I surrounded by all of the family, I'm finding out that I'm getting another grandchild and a great-grandchild. Who could ask for anything more?"
Gracie then looked over to Liza and said, "Hey Liza, when are you due?"
"May 28th."
"Get out of here! That's my due date too!"
"Oh how fun! I thought it was funny that Scotty and Maddie were born just two months apart but now we've got the same due date. This could end up being like Ethan and Henry and Emily!"
Jimmy and Duval were laughing and Jimmy said, "Well if that happens, it's just an excuse to have a bigger party."
Mary then said, "All right now that revelries are over and we've got all the food on the table how about we say grace? It seems that we've got a lot to be thankful for here today."
Jimmy said, "I'll do it."
Everyone looked at him and Duval said, "Really Dad? You've never done this for as far back as I can recall."
"Well, there's a first time for everything."
Everyone sat and bowed their heads and Jimmy stood up and said, "Dear God, we thank you for so many blessings. I personally thank you for all of them. Every last adult and child at this table is a blessing. I don't think I ever deserved this but, I thank you so much, for Mary, my children, my grandchildren and my great grandchildren."
There was silence and Duval looked up at him with puzzlement. Jimmy looked at him like he was recognizing him from somewhere else and Duval was looking the same way at him.
Jimmy then shifted gears and said, "Thank you for this wonderful feast. Bless the hands that prepared it all. In your name we pray, Amen."
Everyone said in unison, "Amen."
They proceeded to eat and when they finished, commiserated that the Seahawks still ended up losing to the Cowboys but, then went out to watch the next football game on TV as the ladies got the pies ready to serve.
Jimmy couldn't shake a feeling and grabbed a beer with his jacket and he told Mary he needed to go outside and get some air. Mary looked at him funny and said, "Is everything all right James?"
"Yeah, it's fine."
Jimmy walked outside and looked at the tank that was now growing plants. It had been almost two years since he needed to regenerate and almost a full year since he needed to take in any of Liza's blood. Mary and Otto had brought him back to life and Liza had cured him.
Duval then came out with a beer in hand and said, "Since when do you not want any of Paula's pies?"
Jimmy was looking a little shaken and then said, "I'll be in shortly, and I just needed a minute."
"A minute for what? Dad, what's wrong? This has got to be one of the best Thanksgivings ever and you're being weird. So what's going on?"
"Duval, I told Mary several years ago about what happened when I died. I never told you though."
"I know, you only recommended it as it gives you perspective. I will concur, it does."
"I need to tell you what happened."
"OK, did you see Mom?"
"Yeah, I did."
"Was she mad at you?"
"No, not at all."

FLASHBACK
Jimmy had been thrown off of the bridge and he suddenly found himself sitting very peacefully by the pond where he had so many years earlier proposed to his beloved Rosie Shannon.
There was no fear. There was no doubt. There was no anger. All he felt at that moment was sheer joy and yet when he looked at the pond the reflection was showing him as old. He couldn't figure out why he was old. He knew he had died. He knew he had been thrown off of a bridge and he knew that there was no way he could have survived that, let alone survived and somehow walked to this place. It was a place that didn't exist any longer.
All of a sudden, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned and it was Rosie. She was smiling at him. She didn't look old. She was young, like when he first met her. "Rosie?"
She smiled and said, "Yes, it's me Jimmy."
He stood up and ran his hand through her hair. "You're so beautiful. You always were…right up to the end."
"You were never one to throw away a compliment Jimmy."
"I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too."
"We're together now so it doesn't matter anymore."
Rosie took his hand in hers and then said, "It does matter Jimmy. You're about to get a very special gift."
Jimmy looked at her funny and said, "What kind of a gift."
"You get to go back Jimmy."
"Back? Why would I want to go back? This is the most wonderful place I've ever been and I'm with you. Rosie, all I ever wanted was to be with you. Those lost years…"
Rosie put her hand on Jimmy's lips and said, "Jimmy, those lost years made the later years so much better…so much more special and worth remembering."
"How can I go back Rosie? I was thrown from a bridge."
"Jimmy, miracles can happen. I always believed in them but you struggled with them."
"I don't want to be a miracle. I just want to be with you."
"Jimmy, if you don't go back, they're going to kill our son."
Jimmy looked at her funny and said, "What?"
"Jimmy, if you don't go back, Duval will not know the truth about Strayburn. He'll be dead before he truly figures it out. Gracie has already lost her mother. She can't lose her father too."
"I'm not sure Duval will believe me or even what I can do at this point. I'm old man Rosie."
Rosie then got a very knowing smile and said, "Are you? You're going back Jimmy, your children need you….all five of them."
"Five of them?"
"Oh yeah, two of them haven't been born yet."
"Rosie this is crazy. Who's the third one? We lost little Shannon. Remember?"
"All in good time Jimmy. Go back and fall in love."
"Fall in love?"
"Make it better this time. You have a second chance to set it all right and make it better."
She then pointed to a table and there was a person that Jimmy didn't recognize but that person was saying grace and then he stopped and looked directly at Duval. Jimmy could see there were many people around the table but the only face he could make out was Duval's face.
Rosie then said, "Make it better Jimmy."
She was gone and the next thing Jimmy knew was that he woke up in what he thought was his apartment and there was Mary Goodwin standing there in his room saying hello to him.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Duval said, "Well, that's quite a near death experience."
"It wasn't really a near death experience. It was a death experience. I was dead and at the morgue when all of that happened. Why did you look at me funny when I was having my moment?"
"Well, Dad it's funny or rather ironic because when I sort of died, I saw that same vision of all of us around the table. Your face was the only face that I saw in my vision right before I woke up. I realized after I thought about it, that it was some kind of a special gathering but I never heard a word you said in the vision, I only saw you and you looked happy and I realized that I was also happy. I think we've come full circle."
"I think you're right. You know Duval, something else that I thought about when I was standing there looking at all of you."
"What's that Dad?"
"Chances are good, that I'll outlive you, Helen, Paula and Wally."
"I know Dad. I've thought of that myself."
"I find it all at times disheartening."
"Don't feel that way Dad. I find it comforting."
"Really?"
"Nobody really likes the idea of losing their parents. We all expect it eventually but most people don't like the idea. In mine and Helens' case, we'll have our Dad with us to the very end. How many people get to live into old age and have their parents with them at the end?"
"More than you might think."
"Yeah, I know but those are cases where the parents are older than the child. In mine and Helens' case, you're younger Dad. Think about all of those extra years that you have with Mary, Liza, Gracie, Henry, Emily, Ethan, Maddie, Michelle, Scotty and now Sam and Polly who are on the way. Who knows, you may live long enough to see some great-great-grandchildren. Mom was right you have been blessed."
"Why me?"
"You know sometimes people are just in the right place at the right time."
Jimmy smiled and said, "Thanks Son." They hugged.
All of a sudden the door opened and Mary and Paula both poked their heads out. Mary said, "All right you two. It's time to come in for pie and coffee. Wally's feeling lonely at the TV as the night game with the 49ers is about to start."
Paula said, "Yes, come in, it's cold out here anyway. Don't make me file a complaint against you Agent Pritchard." She winked at him.
Duval laughed slightly and said, "Wait a minute, you're the consultant and I'm the special agent in charge, what do you think you have on me?"
"Oh you'd be surprised." She gave him the look.
"Well in that case, I guess I better go in and finish the Thanksgiving dinner rituals. See you inside Dad."
Duval walked in with Paula and Mary then got serious and said, "You told Duval didn't you?"
"How did you know?"
"When you first told me about this years ago after we were married, you thought you were seeing a futuristic vision of possibly a holiday meal. When I saw the look on your face, you clearly looked like you were experiencing déjà vu."
"I was."
"Are you going to be all right?"
Jimmy smiled and kissed her. "Yeah, I'm going to be all right."
"Are you coming in?"
"Yeah, give me a minute to finish my beer."
"All right."
Jimmy took the last swig of beer and he looked up to the sky and said, "Thank you God…and thank you Rosie. I have a funny feeling you advocated for me on some level….Thank you, thank you, thank you."
He turned and walked in. As he walked in, Scotty said, "Grandpa's back in! Grandpa, will you read us the story of the first Thanksgiving at half time like you did last year?"
"How about I read it to you all now?"
All of the young children yelled, "Yeah!"
THE END
****Author's Note****
I want to thank everyone who has been with me on this journey. When I started this back in 2016, I never dreamed it would take me this long to get to the conclusion. I knew the stories that I wanted to tell and I just said to myself that I'll keep writing until I get to the end.
I have no idea what Rand Ravich would have done with this series had it been renewed but one of the things that stuck out with me the most was that it was a relationship with a father and son that had been fractured and with Jimmy coming back from the grave, he had a second chance to set right the mistakes that he had made in his younger days. I wanted to show that Jimmy and Duval were going to be all right as were all of the Pritchard's at the end.
I hope everyone enjoyed my flashback sequences. We knew nothing of Jimmy's wife or Duval's wife and I felt those ladies deserved to be brought to life and to have people care about them.
Thanks for reading!
Sincerely,
Kelly Batten
