Waves In the Sand

'“Papa. . .” I remember saying, my tiny hands trembling as I tried to hold the too heavy volume before me for his kind-eyed examination. “Will you read to me? Mothers too busy.” His eyes scan the title: Grimm Tales. I had always been fascinated with adventure and reality, for what was written in the book was reality to me because I was a witch and all.

He smiles.

“Of course Chrissie. Bring it here.” A squeal of innocent joy flies from my tiny lips and I run, book tucked beneath my arm, to where he sits at his desk. He relieves my hands of the book and places it on the desk before lifting me up to his lap. Calloused fingers pat my head gently as his other hand flicks through the many pages of the worn book. It was much older than what the muggles were told and with far more stories than they read. He stopped on one of our favorites, handing me the thin, tailored piece of soft fabric that marks it place for me to play with. Even though I enjoyed reading for hours with him, I can never sit still long and often need something to distract my hands with. It helps me concentrate more on what is being read. He knew that about me, he knew everything about me; my little quirks and personality in general, like a parent should.

He begins to read in the guise of a beloved character, sad though he was, his rich tenor voice bellowing to fit the personality of the story, far from his originally gentle manner. My fingers twine and untwine the ribbon; his voice sounds far off yet it is ringing in my ears, I’m just that deep into the story. Eventually, it ends and he smiles that fatherly smile to me and I return it; more sleepy and heavy, but a smile none the less. Through drooping eye-lids, I memorize his features. A round, kind face with a small dimple on his left cheek and faint laughter lines at the corners his warm hazel eyes; bushy brown hair falls into them and blows them away, only to have them flutter back in place.

Before I know it, I’m being tucked in, a kiss to the forehead the last this I can recall before fading away to lalaland.

It makes me wonder, when I remember these sweet moments, why I hate this loving man so deeply. What in heavens name could have torn such a rift between us?

I remember instantly, because these wonderful memories I have are few and they all too quickly come to a bitter one; the bitter one, when he had preformed the two taboo’s. He had lied to me, and then he left. . .'

Above, if you cared to read, is just a small piece of what I hope to be publishing later in my life. If you had not noticed -which if you didn't, I don't blame you - is a sort of flash-back for one of my characters who obviously has problems with her father. If you like it, would you mind telling me? I need all the encouragement I can get to ensure a future in writing. But, if you don't or see room for improvement, still tell me. Please? Does puppy-eyes
