Exploring the what-ifs, especially those of the more complex characters from canon *cough* Snape *cough* is just too fun to ignore. I didn't read Harry Potter for the pairings or relationships, and the same holds true for reading and writing FF. If you're looking for lots of smut, you won't find it here.
